FUN TO KNOW FACTS • Jackson, Mississippi is the only Capital City in the United States to sit on an extinct volcano. • The Standard Life Building, now converted into apartments and retail space, was built in 1929 in 5 months and 15 days. At the time of completion, it was the largest reinforced concrete building in the world. • The Mississippi Governor’s Mansion is the second-oldest continuously occupied gubernatorial residence in the nation. • The American Eagle atop the Mississippi State Capitol is 8’ tall with a 15’ wingspan made of solid copper and covered with gold leaf. • The Bisland Cotton Gin located on the grounds of the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum in the oldest operational cotton gin in the world. • Construction is currently underway on the two new museums project. The museums are the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and the Museum of Mississippi History, located next door to the Mississippi Archives & History. Scheduled to open December, 2017; the 200th anniversary of Mississippi Statehood. • Jackson is home to 13 Mississippi Blues Trail Markers, more than any other city.
