ne of Espoo’s best-known cultural venues is WeeGee Exhibition Centre, which contains EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Espoo City Museum (KAMU), Finnish Toy Museum Hevosen kenkä, the Finnish Museum of Horology and Futuro House. You can enhance your experience with a free guided tour, and we also recommend the centre’s year-round offering of events. The unique ‘UFO-like’ Futuro House, designed by Matti Suuronen, stands outside of WeeGee and is open to the public from May to September.

The year is full of captivating events and top exhibitions, from works of art by internationally acknowledged contemporary artists to video installations and the combination of artificial intelligence and art. The banking crisis is tackled on the theatre stage and prejudices tried with comedy. Were you a child in the 1980s? Reminisce at the Children of the Eighties exhibition at the Toy Museum Hevosenkenkä! LUX Hanaholmen lights up the surroundings of Hanasaari until the end of February.

ravel in time to life in the archipelago at Pentala Archipelago Museum on the charming island of Pentala in Espoo’s Suvisaaristo. You can jump onto a scheduled boat and spend a lovely summer’s day in the archipelago, visiting the museum, hiking on trails and even checking out an island-on-an-island. Before the summer, head to EMMA to get to know Brazilian carnival dances or update yourself on the state of the environment through means of art. Admire world-renowned contemporary visual artist Tacita Dean’s first broad private exhibition in the Nordic countries. Throughout the year, you can also marvel at Michael Schilkin’s ceramic animal figurines and domestic video installations and see how artificial intelligence connects to art. One of the top destinations in Espoo is the Gal len-Kallela Museum, right by the beautiful Laajalahti bay. The impressive studio at Tarvaspää was designed and built by Finland’s national artist, Akseli Gallen-Kallela. Its changing exhibitions present the art and lives of Gallen-Kallela and his contemporaries, as well as contemporary art. All in all, the diverse museums located all around Espoo provide an extensive snapshot of the international art field, the rural and maritime history of Espoo, the life of our national artist, and the stories behind toys and clocks. You will also be transported back in time at Espoo’s numerous manors, each of which has its own story. The historic manors can also be hired for events and meetings. Friends of religious sites should visit Espoo’s oldest building, i.e. Espoo Cathedral, the functionalist-style Tapiola Church, and the decorative Orthodox church of St Herman of Alaska.

The well-signposted routes are easy to follow and there are difficulty levels to suit everyone. Nuuksio offers a wide variety of opportunities: take a quick breather during an urban mini-break, head over for a forest excursion after your workday, or grab your backpack for a brisk weekend hike.

Nuuksio’s lakes, forests, valleys, marshes and rocks form a perfect outdoor setting in this national treasure of the metropolitan area. We also recommend a visit to Haltia, the Finnish Nature Centre, which will make you fall in love with the jewels of Finnish nature, from north to south.

Urban nature is always near by Natural wonders can be found all over Espoo. Enjoy local urban greenery like Laajalahti Nature Reserve or Espoo Central Park, or dive into the forest to find fabulous and unique nature trails. Plan a fun weekend away for the whole family somewhere new, which is just waiting to become your favourite secret spot.

The Helsinki Metropolitan Area is the nature capital of the world. Among other things, the region includes two national parks (Nuuksio and Sipoonkorpi), the fabulous Rantaraitti seaside route, the central parks of Espoo and Helsinki, dozens of parks, numerous recreation and leisure areas, and the Baltic Sea with its beautiful beaches and islands.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AT HALTIA – THE FINNISH NATURE CENTRE

G H

altia – the Finnish Nature Centre is an exhibition and event centre located right next to Nuuksio National Park, only 40 minutes from central Helsinki. The wooden building, which is eco-friendly in itself, hosts exhibitions on all of Finland’s national parks and recreation sites.

Nature Centre hosts exhibitions on all of Finland’s national parks and recreation sites.

The building and its architecture were inspired by a poem in the Finnish national epic, The Kalevala, that describes the creation of the world. The centre is founded on sustainability, careful design and ultramodern ecological solutions. The aim is to have an absolutely minimal carbon footprint, and the centre takes the environment into account in all of its operations.

The building and its architecture were inspired by a poem in the Finnish national epic, The Kalevala

The building, designed by Professor Rainer Mahlamäki, is Finland’s first public building to be built entirely of wood (except for the basement). The solar panels on its roof play a significant role in generating the building’s energy. Haltia is designed to minimise the energy needed for heating, cooling and lighting. The eco-friendly design and construction paid careful attention to the shape of the building, the placement of elements, the number of windows, the orientation and daily fluctuations. The most authentic nature experience is, however, outside, and Haltia is a good starting point for excursions into the surrounding nature, including Nuuksio National Park. Expert guides can be booked for a tour of the exhibition or of Haltia’s architecture and eco-technology, and/or a nature excursion. ʊ ʊhaltia.com

Kirkkonummi

K

irkkonummi is a fascinating destination for boaters. Porkkala’s inner archipelago has quick access to the outer archipelago. During your trip, why not take a walk on the popular Linlo recreation area which is also accessible through a pedestrian bridge from the mainland. The Porkkala parenthesis period has left cultural historical signs on the area, such as the ruins of the Stora Träskö fortification. The Kallbåda and Rönnskär lighthouses are also historically significant. Divers can dive deeper into history at the unique Wreck Park. The wrecks of ships that have sunk in front of Porkkala peninsula can be explored in a guided manner by diving or digitally.

KIRKKONUMMI

You can also get to know the history of Porkkala’s parenthesis period without getting your feet wet at the Ragvalds museum area in central Kirkkonummi. Those looking for culture and beauty should visit the architectural pearl of the Finnish national romantic period, the Hvitträsk studio home. Another type of culture is available at the Pokrova monastery orthodox church and brotherhood and their stunning garden, which form a place well worth visiting. Visitor groups will also be offered a delicious lunch. Kirkkonummi is a great destination for visitors who enjoy the outdoors. Forest meets the sea at the Porkkalanniemi recreation area — the rugged rocky shores, forests and sea views invite you for a hike with the entire family. In addition to Porkkalanniemi, the nature reserve at Meiko wilderness area as well as Nuuksio National Park from Veikkola in the north offer fascinating hiking routes for nature lovers.

No shortage of activities

Espoo’s neighbour Kirkkonummi surprises with the diversity and beauty of its nature. The maritime Porkkala area and the gorgeous countryside landscape, dotted with manors and lakes, will make even the most seasoned traveller gasp.

The region’s five golf courses, various riding stables and enthralling manor destinations guarantee that you will not run out of things to do. Interesting countryside destinations for families with children include Kirkkonummi Farmshop with a fairy-tale path as well as Rehndahl farm where you can interact with the animals. Accommodation options include Meeting and Congress Hotel Majvik and Congress Wellness Hotel Långvik.
