POPULAR PAST TIMES

W

hat a winter we had! After 5 long years of drought conditions, Mother Nature took a U turn packing a winter wallop that we haven’t seen for years. Some nearby ski resorts have announced they will stay open until July thanks to the record breaking snowfall in the mountains. Streams, Rivers and lakes are full, waterfalls and wildflowers are going crazy and the rolling hills are lush and green again. There has never been a better time to enjoy the great outdoors in El Dorado. We’ve put together some of our most popular past times following a wild and wet winter.

1

Whitewater rafting – Hang on, its going to be a wild ride in the spring. With the high water flows the rafting season will begin earlier in the spring and extend later into fall. If you want to experience the thrill of higher flows, book early in the season. Beautiful wildflowers, rushing side creeks; these are some of the things we look forward to in wet years and which make for spectacular boating. Choose a professional outfitter that is experienced and prepared for the high water in the spring. July through August is good time for families, friends or first timers offering that perfect blend of exhilarating adventure, amazing scenery and relaxation 7 days a week.

2

Gold Panning – This unusually wet winter makes conditions prime for gold panning! It’s an exciting time for gold hunters, because the heavy rains and resulting flooding have displaced earth and scoured away rocks that have hidden gold for centuries. The best prospecting in 20 years will come in the summer months when the water has receded. Get a map of public land perfect for panning at VisitElDorado.com. For beginners and those looking for a money back guarantee we suggest Marshall Gold Discovery Park. Here visitors get a panning lesson from the park docent and in under an hour they leave with a vile containing at least a few flakes of real gold. Gold Bug Park & Mine offer gem panning for a nominal fee.

3

Waterfall & Wildflower hikes – There is no better way to appreciate the wonders wrought by water than to take one of the several spectacular waterfall hikes that El Dorado has to offer. Normally reserved as a spring time activity, this year the awe inspring waterfalls will be on display well into the summer months. Here are just a few of the storm-fed gifts left by winter. Cascade Falls is probably one of the best short hikes you can do in the Emerald Bay area. It is only 1.5 miles round trip to the top of the falls with great views of Cascade Lake and, of course, Lake Tahoe! The waterfall is about 200 feet and is very impressive. Upper & Lower Eagle Falls – 22 miles south of Tahoe City on Highway 89, visitors can take an easy half mile round trip hike to the top of the beautiful 25’ falls or slightly more difficult hike down to the bottom of the 150’ impressive lower falls. Park Creek Waterfall – For an easy hike to the Park Creek Waterfall enter the Sly Park at the main entrance and keep left at the fork in the road and proceed to the end of the park road, and park at Hazel Creek Meadow. There is a small footbridge across Hazel Creek and the waterfall is about a one mile hike. Find More waterfall hikes at VisitElDorado.com

Our Deep Roots AFTER THE FRANTIC FIRST YEARS of the California Gold Rush, when gold became difficult to find, some miners moved on and others discovered the rich soil of El Dorado County. Early-day farmers wool, dairy products, beef, hay, beans, apples, pears and various grains, especially barley. One of the most profitable crops was wine. By the early twentieth century, El Dorado County ranked third in viticulture behind Sonoma and Napa counties, with over 1.5 million vines producing over 687 million gallons of wine annually.

HISTORIC TOWNS Placerville

H

istorically known as “Hangtown,” Placerville is a charming town rich with history named after the placer gold deposits found in its river beds and hills during the Gold Rush of the 1840s. Today, the Bell Tower serves as a gathering place for parades, celebrations, and other Historic Main Street events. Placerville Hardware “Oldest Hardware store west of the Mississippi is a must see.

Georgetown “Pride of the Mountains” —

M

ain Street looks much as it did long ago with its wide streets and historic buildings. It’s a bit off the beaten path but the small town hospitality, a thriving arts community, quaint shops and growing food scene is well worth the trip. The iconic Georgetown Hotel has been newly renovated and returned to its former glory. Goergetown is home to the Jeepers Jamboree, “the Granddaddy of them all” considered the oldest, toughest and largest organized event off roading event in the world along the Rubicon Trail.

T

he various streams and creeks in El Dorado County hold more trout than most people think. You can find a map showing all of the named streams and creeks on the west slope of El Dorado County simply by visiting eldoradotu.org. Once there you can select your favorite stream, then check the fish index attached which shows you the type of trout you can expect to find on the end of your line when fishing that water. All streams that drain into the American River watershed are open year round with certain restrictions. PHOTO COURTESY: PAT DOLLINS 26 | EL DORADO COUNTY FARM TRAILS & VISITORS’ GUIDE

ake Tahoe is a world-class year around vacation destination located along the eastern edge of El Dorado County. While hotels and ski resorts draw millions of guests each year, the area’s main attraction continues to be the restful silence o f the wilderness and the awe-inspiring beauty of the Lake. As the Washoe Indians realized centuries ago, the “edge of the lake” is a unique and special place.

Elevation: The average surface of Lake Tahoe is 6,229 feet above sea level. The highest peak rising directly from the shoreline is Mt. Tallac at 9,735 feet. The highest point in the Tahoe Basin is Freel Peak at 10,881 feet. Volume: Lake Tahoe contains an estimated 39.75 trillion gallons or 122 million acre-feet of water. That’s enough water to cover the entire state of California to a depth of 14.5”. Purity: The water in Lake Tahoe is 99.7% pure, about the same as distilled water. A white dinner plate can be seen at 78’ below the surface.

EDC Farm Trails — Imagine Another Time... By Linda George

A

EL DORADO COUNTY FARM TRAILS

s you travel down our country roads, and you see a remnant of an old building or rock wall, or an old wagon, stop and listen and you might hear smooth bellied frogs croaking, a crackling, rushing creek, the soft lowing of cows and perhaps clucking hens. But close your eyes, listen carefully and off in the distance you might hear the ancient sounds of the Miadu Indian mothers gently singing their children to sleep. Stop along Historic Highway 49 and imagine the countless teams of horses as they pulled wagons up the steep ravine along the old supply route that once brought sugar and tobacco to the men and women so desperate to make good in a venture that left no room for mistakes. Along the trails our pioneers hunted and planted what they ate, cooked over outdoor fires, cut trees to build their homes and barns, and still provided fresh milk to their children. Women using scraps of cloth made quilts by hand to warm their families. It was a landscape as ruthless and unforgiving as it was in its promise of riches for those brave enough to seek their fortune in farming, or work a claim for that glint of treasure that would erase all the hardship and sacrifice. Down another trail and past old orchards, think of the farmers and ranchers whose hopes and dreams ended when the Pear orchards were blighted, or when the weather ruined acres of grapes. Visualize the hard work that was rewarded with family celebrations of lush harvests of tomatoes, eggs, armloads of ripe fruit, and thankful toasts with ruby red wines and fresh baked breads and berry pies. Imagine the hand-scrubbed laundry waving in the breeze with its clothing and quilts made by tradition and with loving hands. If this touches your heart and paints a fond picture in your mind, look for the Farm Trail Signs to help you envision more. Excerpts for this article were contributed by Baroness Elke-Matta von Schlosser, proprietress of the Enchanted April Inn in Pilot Hill, www.EnchantedAprilInn.com.

On the Road with “The Quilt Trail Project” By Reneé Hargrove

“The Quilt Trail Project” continues to blaze their folk art and agri-tourism trail with fresh, hand-painted wooden barn quilt additions for all to enjoy. What began in late 2014 as a ‘hopeful’ project is now a viable El Dorado County Farm Trails Association partner and feature that enhances our working landscape and endears community pride. There are quilt trails across rural America so our project is part of a national grassroots movement that captivated quilters, artists, photographers, farmers and whole communities. Americana barn quilts have been placed on buildings, barns, in gardens and other places since the 1800s, and for many unique reasons—some draw visitors to local destinations and businesses, some celebrate family history, some memorialize a loved one and others become a family project…the meaning is as individual as the barn quilt patterns. Dotted along our picturesque county trails and seemingly connected by an imaginary clothesline, the effect of the barn quilts is enchanting and vivid. 34 | EL DORADO COUNTY FARM TRAILS & VISITORS’ GUIDE

We proudly accepted funding in part from an El Dorado County economic Opportunity Grant, awarded to renew and add farm and quilt trail signage along the long-standing Farm Trails Association routes as well as increase bus tour opportunities and excursions… very exciting!. For a printed Quilt Trail map go to EDC-FarmTrails.org, click on ‘Quilt Trails’ and look for the downloadable map. Beautiful and historic El Dorado County welcomes your visit and partaking of all there is to see and experience. As you stop along the way, you might ask about each barn quilt to learn first-hand what kind of kinship to land and family they represent. NOTE: Look for the red Quilt Trail logo on the map pages next to members’ name.

l Dorado County Farm Trails received a grant from the USDA to improve our EBT participation. EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) CalFresh Benefits or Food Stamps as some refer to them are happily accepted at the Main Street Farmers’ Market. Because of the grant we are able to have a dedicated booth at the market where EBT recipients can use their benefits and receive tokens to spend at the booths just like cash. This not only gives patrons more access to locally grown fruits and veggies it also helps the local farmer. EDC Farm Trails also plans to use some of the money to increase awareness of the night time market and plan more special events like cooking demos and nutrition lessons. EDC Farm trails would like to thank the USDA and the many prominent members of the community that wrote letters of support to the USDA on EDC Farm Trails behalf. Without your letters of support we would not have been able to accomplish this community outreach.

The Main Street Farmers’ Market specializes in local fruits and vegetables, sustainable agriculture and community. We have live music, fresh produce, and all farmers happily accept EBT! Check us out on facebook.com/main-street-farmers-market. The market runs from June thru Sept. every wed. evening 4pm till dusk (7:30 ish) and is located around the Historic Bell Tower on Main Street (401 Main Street, Placerville, CA 95667).

Know your Farmer, Know your Food Perry Creek Walnut Farm t 6491 Perry Creek Rd. t Somerset, California 530.503.9705 t www.perrycreekwalnuts.com by Betty Albert t www.greenchefpress.com

A

EL DORADO COUNTY FARM TRAILS

pproximately 4,000 California walnut growers produce over 600,000 short tons of walnuts annually. Right here in El Dorado County, 205 walnut trees on 10 acres at Perry Creek Walnut Farm are budding out that delicious fruit at a steady pace. Recent rains have promised a bumper crop of organic English walnuts for the Perry Creek farm. Betty Allen moved from New York to Somerset five years ago, and never looked back. Although she advertises on a regular basis with her New York business network, Betty also sells to locals and internet customers. Betty and Bob do all the harvesting, drying, shelling, packing and shipping the old fashioned way — by hand. The walnuts are harvested in October. Whole and shelled walnuts are available in all sizes from 1 to 10 pounds, plus shipping. Twenty pounds in the shell brings you an additional two free pounds. Well known in the community, Perry Creek FLAV-R-ROASTED Fancy Mixed Nuts and sugar and spice and candied walnut packages are available at the farm stand out front. You will also find homemade items such as 3-Berry Jam, Apple Butter, Organic Pasta Sauce, farm fresh organic eggs and vegetables in season.

WINE COUNTRY

IN EL DORADO COUNTY

TASTE AT A HIGHER LEVEL Visit El Dorado Wine Country for breathtaking vistas, wide diversity of award winning wines, discovery and delight around every bend. Our wineries are renowned for making vibrantly flavorful, distinctly delicious wines, grown in the dramatic elevations of the Sierra Nevada. One of California’s oldest wine-producing areas, vineyards and wineries first flourished here during the Gold Rush era. A century later, in the 1970s, a renaissance in the growth of premium vineyards and wineries began again. Today, the county has more than 2,000 acres of vines producing 50 grape varieties and home to more than 70 wineries. Each passionately tended by winemakers who love coaxing from each diverse acre its perfect harvest and each different in their winemaking approach. Come explore the El Dorado Wine Country and discover some of

Make the roasted garlic: Toss the 12 cloves garlic with the olive oil and 1 teaspoon water in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover, leaving a vent, and microwave until soft, about 90 seconds. Let cool, covered.

For the Chili: 12 shallots, chopped 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 3 Anaheim chile peppers 3 cloves garlic, minced 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 cup dry white wine 7 cups low-sodium chicken broth 4 cups pork sausage, cooked 1 tablespoon chili powder 2 15-ounce cans navy beans, undrained Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 10 ounces fresh spinach, chopped 3/4 teaspoon smoked paprika 1/3 cup heavy cream 6 strips cooked bacon, chopped

Prepare the chili: Preheat the broiler. Cook the shallots in the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium low heat until caramelized, about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, place the chiles on a foil-lined broiler pan and broil until charred on all sides, turning, about 8 minutes. Transfer to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let cool. Peel the peppers with your fingers or a paring knife. Stem, seed and chop. Add the minced garlic to the shallots and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add the flour and cook, stirring, until toasted, about 3 minutes. Increase the heat to high and add the wine; simmer 2 minutes, scraping up any browned bits from the pan. Add the roasted chilies, 6 cups broth, the sausage, chili powder, cayenne, beans and salt and black pepper to taste. Return to a simmer. Meanwhile, squeeze the soft pulp from the roasted garlic into a blender or food processor. Add the remaining 1 cup broth and process until smooth. Add to the chili and simmer until thickened, about 30 minutes, adding the spinach and bacon pieces during the last 5 minutes. Add the paprika and cream and season with salt and pepper. Serves 6 Pair this with Rucksack Cellars Wines: 2016 Chardonnay, 2016 Barbera Rosé, 2015 Zinfandel, 2013 Cache, 2014

Pairing provided by Rucksack Cellars. VisitElDordao.com blog or sign up for the newsletter to find more recipes. PHOTO COURTESY: LISA JESSE PHOTOGRAPHY Visit-ElDorado.com
