REDWOOD NATIONAL AND STATE PARKS The park is home to some of the world’s tallest trees, oldgrowth coast redwoods. They can live 2,000 years and grow over 300 feet tall. Immense and ageless redwoods soar to heights that are unimaginable. John Steinbeck called them “Ambassadors from another time.” The old-growth redwood groves of Redwood National and State Parks are so removed from the present that to explore them is to explore the same forests that have existed here for eons.

COUNTY PARKS Looking for a quick jaunt through the redwoods or a relaxing weekend-get-away spot? Florence Keller County Park, Clifford Kamph Memorial Park and Ruby Van Deventer offer pet-friendly campsites and recreational opportunities.

BOY SCOUT TRAIL
Escape into silence amid old-growth redwoods
Redwood beauty doesn’t get more accessible
impson-Reed Grove couldn’t have been designed better if the Visitors Bureau was starting from scratch. First of all there’s the location, just three miles of curving through the redwoods on Highway 199 east of its junction with Highway 101. It’s about a 15-minute drive from downtown Crescent City. There’s no more accessible route into what one hiking book calls “breathtakingly big redwoods.” The path is level and mostly smooth through a double-loop route that totals up to less than a mile of walking but delivers a treasure of visual delights, even to people in wheelchairs or strollers. All that accessibility makes this a four-star visitors’ attraction, which could be a drawback for some. After all, one of the charms of walking through the redwoods is the sudden, enveloping stillness that makes you feel as if you’re the only entity on the planet. There’s usually cars parked along the pull-outs on both sides of the highway. This is not the place to go for the silent treatment. But what the heck, put on a friendly smile and enquire about where some of your path-mates hail from. They won’t bend your ear for long
— the views are too compelling, especially to redwood newcomers. It’s hard to beat the attractions along this path, including fallen behemoths that offer a closer perspective. The biggest of these lines a stretch of the trail, a natural longhouse that dwarfs passersby. This isn’t so much a hike as a stroll. But then again, not everyone goes into the woods looking for a cardiovascular workout. Simpson-Reed Grove lays out some of the best redwood scenery to be found. And everyone is looking for that.
TRAIL NOTES ■ THE HIKE: A double-loop of slightly less than a mile. Take a right at the first fork, then another right onto Peterson Memorial Trail, which eventually rejoins Simpson-Reed loop as it circles counter-clockwise back to the starting point. ■ SWEAT LEVEL: The trail is level, smooth and short. ■ GETTING THERE: Park along the well-marked turnouts along Highway 199 just 3 miles east of Highway 101.
eep in the redwoods, it’s beyond quiet, as if the tallest trees in the world somehow suck the sound out of their surroundings. And nowhere is the silence deader than on Boy Scout Trail. Strike out from the trailhead and it envelops you immediately. Maybe it’s because, as David Baselt writes at redwoodhikes.com, “there are only about three other trails in the world where you can walk through oldgrowth redwoods for five miles or more without hearing traffic noise or seeing any sign of development.” If the wind blows just right, you might catch the foghorn from Crescent City. Other than that and the occasional buzz of a fly, the lack of auditory stimuli is almost post-apocalyptic. About two miles in, watch for a right turn. There’s no sign alerting hikers, but the side-path to the right is the only one you’ll encounter on the trail. Take it, and you’ll soon be able to go right or left on a short loop leading to Boy Scout Tree (how could you not see that coming?). This is a particularly enormous redwood, double-trunked and almost
moldy with its great age. Its gnarly bark sports patches of green and red, and you wouldn’t be able to read the small wooden sign hammered into it if you didn’t already intimate that it’s the name of the giant. A spectacle, although not an especially good-looking one. For attractiveness, regain the main trail, crisscross Jordan Creek on a couple of wooden bridges and start listening for the sound of cascading water. Shortly after you start hearing it, Fern Falls comes into view. It’s not a high-rise, but it is picturesquely ensconced amid greenery and fallen logs. A heckuva turn-around, with all those redwoods to view from a different angle coming back.
TRAIL NOTES ■ THE HIKE: A 5.6-mile round-trip deep into old-growth redwoods on Boy Scout Trail in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. ■ SWEAT LEVEL: An easy trek with only about 200 feet of total altitude fluctuation. ■ GETTING THERE: From Crescent City, go east on Elk Valley Road, then south on Howland Hill Road. Watch for the trailhead on the left side about three miles after the road turns to dirt.

■ THE RIDE: 7-mile out-and-back on gravel road or 8.5-mile loop with Lower Lake Road and Kellogg Road. ■ HIGHLIGHTS: Coastal dunes, forest, wildlife in freshwater ponds, elk and historic Indian village site. ■ SWEAT LEVEL: Moderate with small hills. Gravel road with some sandy spots. ■ GETTING THERE: From Crescent City, take 101 north to Kings Valley Road and head west. Continue straight onto Morehead Road until it meets Lower Lake Road. Take a right. Take an immediate left on Kellogg Road. Trailhead is 0.5 mile west on your left. Continue north on Lower Lake Road for Pala Road trailhead.
any of the former ranch roads in Tolowa Dunes State Park have a gravel base making for great mountain bike rides. The 3.5-mile Ridge Trail provides a good taste of the park going through unique dune ecosystems including forested ponds and a former Tolowa Indian village site that is now a cemetery. The Ridge Trail can be mountain biked as a 7 mile out-andback or combined with a ride down Lower Lake Road for an 8.5-mile loop. There are two potential starting points: a trailhead on Kellogg Road a half-mile west of Lower Lake Road. Additional parking available at a horse parking lot 0.2 mile further west on Kellogg Road. Parking is also available at the large lot on the west end of Pala Road, which starts at the north end of Lower Lake Drive. This trail is far from flat, but the hills are sparse and small. Although most of the trail is gravel, it is important for riders to watch out for sandy spots (it is a dunes park after all) that can quickly stall a bike in its tracks. If starting on Kellogg Road, the first half-mile is mostly flat with some mild hills, and then you
reach the forks for the marsh side trail, where you first hear sounds of the ocean calling from the other side of the forested ridge to your left. The inclines and declines gain a little elevation from this point forward, making for fun coasts on hilly curves and a few climbs to get your cardio for the day. At 2.3 miles there is a bike-friendly side-trail leading to some ponds where you might see ducks, otters, frogs, butterflies and dragonflies. The park's ponds are the only year-round ponds found in coastal dunes in California. Speaking of wildlife, watch for elk throughout this ride. Back on the Ridge Trail, the trail enters a sprawling field with the Yontocket village site and cemetery perched above. Be very respectful at Yontocket, which is the site of a 19th-century massacre of Tolowa Indians by European settlers. A long and winding descent, ends with an optional trail to the Smith River on your left. Cows for Alexandre Dairy are alongside the last stretch of trail to Pala Road. Take Lower Lake Road south back to Kellogg Road to finish the loop.
Take a proactive approach to your financial needs. • Financial Planning • Tax Preparation • Estate Planning & Trusts • Accounting/Payroll Service
Coming back from the pier, take the path on your left to cut over to Battery Point Lighthouse parking lot and take in the views. After leaving the beacon, head north on A Street and get around the Oceanfront Hotel with a path on the left or the road to the right. Continue north on A Street then take a left on 5th Avenue, which quickly turns into Pebble Beach Drive with an a bike lane on each side. Pebble Beach Drive has breathtaking views of the rocky coast line with sea stacks dotting the horizon, culminating in the largest of them all, Castle Rock, the second-most populous sea bird nesting habitat on the West Coast. Take a left at Washington Ave (officially Radio Road) to visit Point St. George Heritage Area, a former Tolowa Indian village site that has dramatic cliffs hanging over the ocean.
■ THE RIDE: 11 miles round trip if going to Crescent City Harbor and Pt. St. George. Paved with bike lanes. ■ SWEAT LEVEL: Easy, mostly-flat ride on paved roads. ■ GETTING THERE: Parking options along the entire route. Crescent City Harbor is on Hwy. 101 just south of Crescent City. Parking also available at Beachfront Park, lightouse parking lot and along Pebble Beach Drive.

hanks to recent bike lane improvements, Crescent City has a 5.5-mile stretch of easy, safe bike lanes with world-class coastal scenery. The ride starts wih the seemingly-endless sandy expanse of South Beach on the south side of Crescent City Harbor, skirts the rugged tide-poolers dream that runs from iconic Battery Point Lighthouse to seastack-surrounded Pebble Beach, and finishes with the dramatic cliffs at Point St. George and the sea-lion and sea bird paradise of Castle Rock. Most of the bike lanes followed for this mostlyflat, paved-road ride were only just created in 2014, including bike lanes on the entire length of scenic Pebble Beach Drive and a winding bike path around Crescent City Harbor. The new harbor bike path allows cyclists to connect to Beachfront Park while staying on the coast and avoiding 101. It starts at the entrance to the inner boat basin. On the north end when the path reaches a road, take a left behind a large white hotel and soon you will see the bike path resume near a bridge over Elk Creek, a great place to stop and enjoy the sights this small but vibrant creek that harbors salmon. The bike path then veers to the left cutting around the Crescent City Visitor Center and Crescent City Pool before following a path on Howe Drive that overlooks the outer harbor. At the end of the straight path, stick to the coast and take a path on the left leading to B Street. Go to the left for a mandatory side trip to the end of B Street Pier — named one of the most scenic piers in the state by the LA Times.

SEAQUAKE BREWING COMPANY SEAQUAKE BREWING COMPANY opened their doors in July of 2016. Inspired by their love of craft beer and the beautiful local scenery, they set out to see what they could brew on a half-barrel system during family barbecues on a ranch north of town. When it was right, they decided to share their beer and transformed the old brewery building on Front Street into a family-style brewery. In September of 2018, they expanded and launched “SeaBucha” to share their passion for healthful kombucha. When you walk in the front doors, the large bar and friendly environment welcome you. Handcrafted metal artwork from a local artist adorns the walls, and a large fireplace warms you from the cold. Their menu ranges from pub style appetizers and brick oven pizzas to burgers and specialty fresh fish dishes. The restaurant can accommodate small parties and cater larger parties in their brew house. At SeaQuake they start each day believing that the best craft beer has yet to be made and pride themselves on using high quality ingredients to work towards the best. The North Coast is back in the movies with the newest adaptation of Jack London’s classic, 1903 Yukon adventure novel The Call of the Wild. The film, set during the Klondike Gold Rush and starring Harrison Ford in its leading role, features some of Del Norte County’s beautiful coast and most famous river. While the highway may be replaced by railroad and a steam locomotive with some CGI trickery, Wilson Beach is certainly recognizable to those familiar, especially our locals. Our Smith River, standing in for the Yukon River, will play a starring role in exciting rapids scenes featuring Mr. Ford and his canine companion, Buck. The Humboldt-Del Norte Film
Commission worked hand-inhand with the production to shoot these scenes here in the Redwood Region. Location Manager Robin Citrin (whose credits include everything from The Aviator to the recent Blade Runner 2049 in her over thirty-year career) knew that Del Norte had what the 20th Century Studios production needed, having previously scouted and worked in the region. The release date for The Call of the Wild is February 21, 2020.

Tsunami Walking Tour It started with a 9.2 magnitude earthquake in Alaska that sent tsunami waves surging towards Crescent City. In less than five hours, during the early morning hours of March 28th, 1964, three smaller waves pushed into storefronts and businesses causing little damage and a sense of calm in the people trying to clean up. Then the big wave, cresting at nearly 21 feet, slammed into the Downtown, killing eleven people and devastating 29 city blocks.

You’ll find this behemoth located just east of the Cultural Center on Front Street. These 40-ton “jacks” were built on-site to bolster the harbor breakwaters. A 25-ton Tetrapod was pushed off its display pad during the ’64 Tsunami.
Walk southeast on the paved path to the newly built Elk Creek foot bridge. This is where the worst loss of life happened when five people drowned while receding tsunami waters pulled their boat under the highway trapping them.

NATIVE AMERICAN TRIBES Two tribes of Native Americans lived in Del Norte County before the arrival of white settlers, the Yurok Tribe to the south on the Klamath River and the Tolowa Tribe to the north on the Smith River plains. Both tribes still flourish today and are a rich part of the county’s culture.
Co. built in 1871 it produced 45,000-50,000 feet of lumber per day. The company assisted in supporting growing Del Norte as well as San Francisco. In the 1870’s the railroad was introduced to bring the logs to market. In the 1920’s the Caterpillar tractor and the logging truck displaced the railroad as the most efficient method of logging.
THE TSUNAMI OF ‘64 It came on March 28, 1964, caused by a violent earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale that struck Anchorage, Alaska. The tidal surge that followed destroyed 150 businesses and homes and killed 11 people. The devastation of the tsunami, while not forgotten, resulted in a new local slogan for Crescent City: “Come Back Town U.S.A.!”.
THE TOWNS The first road to penetrate the county was the Crescent City Plank Road to the Illinois River in Oregon. This road was completed in May 1858 and traversed much of the Smith River Canyon. The towns of Klamath and Crescent City were born from the hunger of the gold fields to the east. Treacherous bar and river conditions soon proved too hazardous for Klamath, but Crescent City flourished as a destination for ships from San Francisco. As more people arrived and the gold fields played out, agriculture and timber became primary industries. To the north, the town of Smith River (Four Corners) was established as an agricultural community providing commodities for Crescent City. Soon, timber and fishing became mainstays of the coastal towns. To the east, the hamlet of Gasquet served as a ferry crossing and wayside for travelers to and from points east and west.
Del Norte County’s lumber industry was important to not only its residents but also to the state of California. The timber industry once represented the backbone of the economy in Del Norte County. In 1853 the first mill was established in Crescent City. Oxen originally moved the logs to the mill. The largest mill in the county was that of Hobbs, Pomeroy and
LIGHTHOUSES Battery Point Lighthouse
The Battery Point Lighthouse is an active lighthouse that acts as a private aid to navigation. Its oil lamps were first lit on December 10, 1856. Lighthouse keepers still tend the light and reside there. A tour of the lighthouse gives the opportunity to look back in time as you visit the personal lighthouse keeper’s quarters and the artifacts left behind since the 1850’s. Tours also include a climb up the spiral staircase to the tower. Many keepers and their families have tended the light in the 160 year history. Also known as the Crescent City Light Station, the lighthouse was operated by the U.S. Lighthouse Service until 1936 when the
St. George Reef Lighthouse
The spectacular St. George Reef Lighthouse sits six miles off our coast. It was constructed in response to the sinking of the steamship Brother Jonathan in July 1865. It took almost 10 years to construct the lighthouse that warns mariners of the treacherous Dragon Rocks. This lighthouse sits on a large rock and reaches a height of 134 feet above the Pacific. The lighthouse lens was placed in the tower in 1892. The light warned mariners for over 80 years. It was abandoned in 1986 by the U.S. Coast Guard and was replaced by an automatic buoy in 1975. The 18 foot, 5,000 pound lens
U.S. Coast Guard took over the operations. The U.S. Coast Guard maintained the light until it was automated in 1953, but the Coast Guard continued to maintain of the Fourth Order Drum lens until 1965 when it was decommissioned. The light is currently a private aid to navigation cared for by the Del Norte County Historical Society. Although tour hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., please remember that the Battery Point Lighthouse sits on a tidal island and is only accessible during low tide. All tours are scheduled as tide permits. Please use care and caution when crossing from the mainland to the island at all times. was dismantled by volunteers and Coast Guard members then reassembled in the Del Norte County Historical Society Museum Bolan Room in 1982. The lighthouse is visible from shore on a clear day. Treacherous seas made docking at the lighthouse a very hazardous duty indeed. The lighthouse is only accessible by helicopter tours hosted by the St. George Reef Preservation Society. The 2019 tours are tentatively scheduled for March 17 and in again April. Participants must meet requirements in order to fly in small a helicopter. Check out the PSGLPS web site or call (707) 442-7873 to reserve a tour. Cost is $300.00 per person.
Commercial Crab fishing is one of the most important economic drivers for Crescent City and Del Norte County. The commercial Dungeness crab fishery is one of the oldest fisheries in California. The fishery began in California around the same time as the Gold Rush in the mid-1800’s. It is also one of the most valuable fisheries in our state. In the 2014 season in California, over 30 million pounds of Dungeness crab were landed with a wholesale value of over $80 million dollars. About 80 percent of the annual catch occurs in the first two months of the seven and a half month season. Female and small male crabs are prohibited from commercial sale and the fishery is closed during the time when females are carrying fertilized eggs. The state is divided into Northern and Southern Areas by the Department of Fish and Wildlife. For the past seventy years the Northern Area has consistently landed millions of pounds more crab per season than the Southern Area. In most years, 50 percent or more of Northern Area landings occur in Crescent City.
SHIPPING In the 1800’s Shipping was a profitable industry of Del Norte County. The location of Crescent City Harbor was a convenient stop for ships traveling from San Francisco to all points north. The Hobbs Wall Company in Crescent city began carrying passengers on steamers such as Elizabeth, Pomeroy, and Del Norte. In fact, reportedly the company held the largest payroll accounts in the country at the time. The Humboldt Times reported, “Crescent City is a rather lively town. Almost every branch of trade is represented; Crescent City will be the most important city north of San Francisco.” In July 1865 the Brother Jonathan Steamer was lost just off our coast after leaving the harbor. The steam driven paddle wheeler went down just north of Crescent City. The steamer was carrying passengers and allegedly a substantial amount of gold. The wreck of the Brother Jonathan still remains as one of the worst shipping disasters on the Pacific coast as over 200 souls were lost.

• St. George Reef Lighthouse is the most expensive lighthouse ever built in America. • In 1996, the lantern room was removed from St. George Reef Lighthouse as part of the restoration efforts going on at the time. It was lifted off the lighthouse by a helicopter and dropped accidentally onto the beach. The dome was so badly damaged that it had to be replaced with a new custom built one.

E3 (Experience, Education, Employment) is a summer youth program, with a focus on building our future workforce through work-based learning during high school. The program is a partnership between Del Norte County Office of Education, Del Norte Workforce Center, Building Healthy Communities and local employers. E3 participants attend a week-long work readiness bootcamp, where they learn about work ethic, teamwork, conflict management, communication, customer service, budgeting, cash handling, interview tips and how to build a resume. At the end of the week, a speed interview event is held, where students have a chance to interview with the participating worksites (local businesses/
organizations). Students are then placed at a worksite after input from both the employers and youth. During their paid work experience, students also have a chance to earn up to 10 elective high school credits. Our program is constantly looking for more worksites, as each year our number of students increase. If you are interested in learning more about the program, follow us on Facebook – E3 Summer Youth Program or call the Del Norte Workforce Center, (707) 464-8347.

LightHouseShores.com Lighthouse views and steps to the beach. If you like the outdoors, this is a great place from which to launch. Close to scenic rivers, giant redwoods and of course one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world (OK we might be just a little biased)! But seriously a great location! Catch a sunset, take a stroll along the beach (right across the street), search through the tide pools at low tide, or check out the lighthouse. We are also in a prime location to watch fireworks on 4th of July.

THE STORY OF KAMOME From a tsunami to sisterhood, one little boat’s journey across the Pacific created an unforgettable bond between Crescent City, California -- home of the California Redwoods -- and Rikuzentakata, Japan Many visitors arrive in Crescent City to see our enormous Redwood trees in the area’s Redwood National and State Parks, or visit our beautiful Pacific Ocean beaches and mountain rivers. But we have another tale to tell: how two communities across the world from each other connected over a tiny, barnaclecovered boat. In April of 2013, a mysterious boat washed ashore in Crescent City. Having drifted upside down, the inside of the boat was engulfed in barnacles. Experts were called to examine the dingy and determined it was tsunami debris. They also discovered some Japanese characters after removing some of the barnacles. The characters read Takata High School. A quick search showed the high school was located in Rikuzentakata, a town that was all but leveled by a tsunami two years prior. For being so far apart, Rikuzentakata and Crescent City have a lot in common. Coastal communities along the Pacific, they have vibrant fishing industries and thousands of towering trees. Rikuzentakata was known for a mile of shoreline thick with more than 70,000 pine trees. A 9.0-magnitude earthquake on March 11, 2011 created a tsunami that destroyed those trees, along with the entire community. These two Pacific communities now share a tsunami disaster within their histories. In 1964, it was a 9.2-magnitude earthquake from Alaska that sent a 21foot wave crashing over Crescent City’s downtown. More than 280 buildings and homes were destroyed and 11 lives were lost. Most of the downtown area had to be rebuilt after the tsunami, earning Crescent City the nickname Comeback Town, USA. Take the self-guided tsunami tour in Crescent City that tells the full story. The Rikuzentakata tsunami took the lives of nearly 2,000 people, including 22 Takata High School students. Somehow, this little boat survived tragedy to float the Pacific for years before finding its way to America. Students at Del Norte County High School were drawn to help. They began cleaning the boat. They found the boat had a name, Kamome, which means seagull in Japanese. Others made national and international phone calls to see if they could return the boat to the
students of Takata High School. Kamome was part of the high school’s maritime science class, giving Takata students a hands-on appreciation for the ocean. The boat had been just one of the many losses the community had to rebuild. But in such a difficult time, Takata High School received a call that students across the ocean wanted to help. Crescent City was inspired not only by Kamome’s travels, but the strength of Rikuzentakata. Del Norte County students and staff, as well as Commander Bill Steven, worked tirelessly to establish how to return the boat. The two communities collaborated, along with U.S. and Japanese embassies, to return Kamome. In September of 2013, Kamome boarded a ship for Japan and in just under a week, found its way back to Takata High School. This exchange formed a bond between Rikuzentakata and Crescent City. Takata and Del Norte County High Schools became Sister Schools in 2014 and students from each school have traveled to visit the other. The students share their cultures during John Steven Photos: Bill Steven these visits, exploring language, cooking food and experiencing traditions. children.
