Meet Bristol 2019

New for 2019 There are plenty of exciting new venues and experiences coming for 2019 — more reasons to bring your, meeting or event to Bristol.

Bristol is a thriving city, bursting with culture and history. 2018 was an exciting year with Bristol being named as the Rising Star Destination at The National Geographic Traveller Magazine Reader Awards. Bristol is also recognised for being home to the most Michelin stars in the UK outside of London. Casamia, in the centre of the city, secured the top spot in the Harden’s Best 100 UK Restaurant 2019 list. It’s no surprise that Bristol’s food and drink scene is gaining more recognition than ever and there are a wide mix of food and beverage-focused experiences that can be incorporated into events and incentive trips. Last year saw the reopening of the Bristol Old Vic, the country’s oldest continuously working theatre, originally opened in 1766. The grand Coopers’ Hall has been restored to its former glory as one of Bristol’s premier event spaces with the capacity to host dinners for up to 120. St George’s Bristol also completed its £6.5m renovation project, creating stunning new spaces designed by award-winning architects and available for private hire. Hotel refurbishment and new openings The Village Hotel Bristol officially opened in December 2018 and is located just north of Bristol in Filton. The hotel is near to the UWE Exhibition and Conference Centre and Aerospace Bristol. Offering 153 bedrooms, a state-of-the-art gym and swimming pool, a pub, restaurant and flexible work space, the Village is a great addition to the city. Artist Residence is due to open a new hotel, its fifth, in Bristol in 2019. Housed in a former boot factory in Portland Square between St Pauls and Cabot Circus shopping centre, in the heart of the city, the new hotel is a continuum of the bohemian Artists Residence style: an eclectic fusion of art and vintage.

The Bristol Marriott Royal are relaunching their new bedrooms and updated function rooms this year. The new look combines contemporary décor with moody greys and pewters and original Victorian marble and brass. First opened in 1868, the 150-year-old hotel features a magnificent Palm Court, a Romanesque leisure centre and rooms with views of Bristol Cathedral. Bristol will also welcome ‘The Wave’, a new inland surfing lake on the edge of the city – the first of its kind in Europe. Using the latest wavemaking technology, up to 1,000 waves will be generated per hour, with heights starting at 50cm and peaking at almost 2m, providing an inclusive surfing adventure for everyone from young beginners to professional surfers. A number of boutique and branded hotels are scheduled to open during late 2019 and 2020 – sign up to our newsletter at www.MeetBristol. co.uk to keep in touch with the latest information. Anniversaries In 2019 Bristol will be celebrating 50 years of Concorde: made and developed in the city, the supersonic aircraft takes pride of place at Aerospace Bristol. The Filton museum is planning a series of commemorative events. Other key anniversaries include: • 30 years of Wallace & Gromit: the worldfamous duo created by Bristol’s Aardman Animations. • 10 years of Bristol Pride Festival: the annual celebration of the LGBTQ community. • 10 years of Bristol Aquarium: the Harbourside attraction, that can also be utilised for private events. • 300 years Robinson Crusoe: the first modern English novel has its origins on the streets of Bristol, where Daniel Defoe met Alexander Selkirk, the rescued castaway who is believed to have inspired the novel.

Discover Bristol As a major urban centre with more than a thousand years of history, Bristol has a varied architecture with medieval buildings and modern developments all surrounding the historic harbour at the heart of the city.

It’s not only incredibly easy to get to the central urban area of the city, but Bristol is also surrounded by the beautiful countryside of south Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, with country house hotels, castles and wildlife attractions nearby.

Innovative

Creative

Bristol has a history of innovation stretching back hundreds of years. Its collaborative culture and forwardthinking attitude have developed a thriving start-up culture.

Known for its unorthodox and independent spirit, Bristol has become one of Europe’s most exciting creative cities. With strong digital, cultural and media business and academic excellence, Bristol was named as a UNESCO City of Film, further enhancing its reputation as a leading centre of excellence. Banksy and Upfest, Europe’s largest street art and graffiti festival, have also ensured the city is increasingly recognised internationally for its street art. The city’s streets offer an incredible outdoor gallery with expert guided walks, plus the opportunity to create your own masterpiece in group workshops.

This year’s Tech Nation report has once again crowned Bristol as the UK’s #1 digital tech productivity powerhouse and in 2017, Bristol overtook London as the UK’s leading ‘smart city’ according to the second UK Smart Cities index commissioned by Huawei UK and conducted by Navigant Consulting. The city’s two universities attract students from across the globe. Bristol University, one of the top 50 universities in the world, runs special innovation programmes allowing students to become tomorrow’s change-makers by pursuing their academic specialism and applying it in a multidisciplinary, real-life context. The University of the West of England’s (UWE) aerospace and engineering courses are linked with leading local employers such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce and the Ministry of Defence.

Corporate hospitality & team building Bristol’s reputation for being a creative city is certainly reflected in the offer available to entertain delegates and clients in the city.

For the ultimate team-building activity in Banksy’s hometown, try a street-art tour offered by Where the Wall or your group can create their own masterpiece on a graffiti workshop with Graft. Creativity is absolutely key to the city and Bristol’s famous theatres, Bristol Old Vic and the Bristol Hippodrome, allow teams to explore behind the scenes. Both these venues and other concert halls around the city offer great corporate experiences, allowing you to entertain clients before and during performances. Meanwhile, Wallace & Gromit creators Aardman Animations offer away-day experiences, including workshops that provide participants with the opportunity to learn from expert model makers how to make world-famous Aardman characters while simultaneously enhancing communication and teamwork. With green spaces throughout the city, vibrant urban culture, architecture and art, one of the best ways to explore Bristol is on foot. There is a great range of guided walks with everything from serious historical tours to fascinating pirate adventures. Bristol is spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor activities, from climbing to caving, the city is surrounded by many well-respected agencies able to deliver a fun-filled programme, designed to inspire and enthuse.

Based at Aldwick Estate & vineyard, ACF Team Building has over 300 acres of land, with stunning views and superb facilities including a purpose-built race and tank-driving tracks and a 4x4 offroad course. For a climbing experience with a difference, go aloft! at Brunel’s SS Great Britain gives you the chance to climb the rigging and edge along the main brace for an exhilarating view across the harbour. Camp Baboon, a new edition to the Wild Place Project near Bristol, offers unique away days and stays in the company of giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and baboons, as well as offering bushcraft skills and the ‘Leap of Faith’: scale a 25ft pole up to a small platform, then make the jump. On the sporting front, Ashton Gate Stadium – home to Bristol City Football Club and Bristol Bears Rugby – is the biggest conference and events venue in the south west. The 27,000 capacity stadium features state-of-the-art facilities, split-level sports bar and restaurant (housing the largest indoor sports screen in the country), a pitch-facing corporate hospitality lounge and corporate hospitality boxes. At Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, you can combine meetings in the pavilion with a spot of nets in the sports hall.

The Concorde Gallery seats up to 500 guests for a three course first class dining experience under the wings of the supersonic jet, while the adjacent Concorde Balcony is the perfect location for a glamorous drinks reception. The Concorde Hangar features a dedicated conference suite to suit a range of events, from 10 to 70 attendees, and is the perfect setting for business meetings, anniversary celebrations and memorials. Capable of crossing the Atlantic in under three hours, Concorde cruised at over twice the speed of sound and reached an altitude of 60,000ft. Her passengers would gaze out at the curvature of the Earth as they travelled at 1,350mph and sipped Champagne on the edge of space. Don’t miss your chance to host your next event under the wings of the world famous Concorde in her 50th anniversary year.
