Meet Bristol 2018 Day 1: explore the Centre Morning enjoy a guided boat tour around Bristol’s beautiful harbourside, stopping off to explore the iconic Brunel’s ss great Britain. here you can take advantage of the unique opportunity to ‘go aloft’ and climb the ships mainmast, where you can appreciate panoramic views of the harbourside and beyond from 30 metres above ground. Combine with a visit to the new Being Brunel museum on site, telling the story of the victorian engineer who changed the world, and transformed Bristol – a must for engineers of any discipline. afternoon take in the ever-changing colour landscape of the city with a street art tour led by a local artist who can give you the insights of the art form. tours can be combined with a ‘spray session’ where you can learn to create your own piece of street art – but one you can take away with you as a unique souvenir. evening Dine out at one of Bristol’s many top-notch restaurants. as well as michelin-starred restaurants such as Casamia and Paco tapas, there are well-regarded restaurants that offer private dining areas for those wanting their own space. for smaller groups, wapping wharf offers an eclectic mix of highly-rated restaurants, uniquely located in shipping containers next to the harbourside.

Day 2: the Great outdoors Morning take an early hot-air balloon flight for a special and unforgettable experience. if you visit in august you could attend Bristol’s international Balloon fiesta – europe’s largest ballooning event – and fly with more than 140 balloons. Baskets can take groups as small as four up to 16. if you’d prefer to stay on the ground, get a culture fix with a behind-the-scenes tour of one of Bristol’s museums or galleries. experts from all areas of the arts can help give unique insights, whether on specific time periods or themes. afternoon Bristol has several golf courses close to the city, including the stunning Kendleshire where you can play or take lessons to improve. if you’re not a fan of the great outdoors, Bristol’s inPlay golf allows you to virtually play some of the world’s best courses from the comfort of Bristol’s harbourside.

Day 3: Beyond the city centre Morning travel to Bath by first-class train on a short ride from Bristol. start with a group walk round the city to discover 2,000 years of history, from the roman Baths to the 15th-century Bath abbey, and admire the georgian architecture for which Bath is renowned: the sweeping terraces of the royal Crescent, Palladian-style villas on elegant squares and classical facades in warm, golden-hued Bath stone. afternoon take a luxury coach to the Cotswolds: picture-postcard england at its most enchanting. the thriving market town of tetbury is one of the most beautiful Cotswold towns with its elegant buildings creating a real sense of timeless beauty. as well as offering an interesting shopping experience with many independent shops, it is also a major centre for antiques. visit one of the most sustainable farms in the UK, Daylesford organic farm, where food is produced and sold according to sustainable principles and in harmony with the environment. enjoy a healthy and tasty lunch and perhaps even a half-day cookery class. Berkeley Castle is well worth a visit. still home to the Berkeley family after almost 900 years, the state apartments contain magnificent collections of furniture, rare paintings and english and continental tapestries while outside there’s beautiful terraced gardens, a butterfly house and the charming Yurt tea rooms. evening for an experience with regal grandeur, what beats the special thrill of staying in a luxury castle? thornbury Castle is a 16th-century property on the edge of the Cotswolds, to the north of Bristol. visited by henry viii on honeymoon with anne Boleyn, it has magnificent tudor gardens and its own vineyard. it also offers fabulous dining, spa services and tudor-inspired team-building activities that range from segway jousting and axe throwing to circus skills and duck herding! You could also combine a trip to Bramley and gage and the 6 o’clock gin Distillery, learn about the gin making process and taste some of the UK’s favourite tipple.

evening have an informal night out and dine at one of Bristol’s bars or pubs. it’s a great opportunity to visit the tap rooms at one of the city’s breweries, try a tutored cider tasting at Bristol Cider shop or learn to make cocktails with one of the city’s expert mixologists.

University of Bristol University of Bristol, The Hawthorns, Woodland Road, Bristol BS8 1UQ t 0117 954 5501 e conference-office@bristol.ac.uk W www.bris.ac.uk/conference The University of Bristol’s diverse and impressive building portfolio enables it to open up some of the city’s finest venues for conferences, exhibitions, meetings and social events. This is amongst the greatest choice of venues for all occasions you’ll find in the south west. There are elegant mansions in charming Georgian Clifton; and spacious, more modern facilities in Stoke Bishop on the edge of the Downs. And the University precinct itself offers modern tiered lecture theatres seating up to 440. The impressive and iconic neo-gothic Great Hall in the Wills Memorial Building can seat 800. There’s no shortage of overnight accommodation in summer months, with 600 rooms (many en-suite) available in Clifton near the city’s commercial heart, or in tranquil Stoke Bishop. Most meeting rooms can be booked throughout the year, and most of the University’s other excellent venues are available either in the evenings and weekends, or on weekdays out-of-term.
