Creative Bristol Bristol is a city known for its vibrant creative culture and in recent years has seen its reputation grow to become an important and influential international creative hub. Bristol’s sense of unorthodoxy has always driven its creativity, and it is increasingly recognised as one of the most important cultural cities in the UK. Beautiful Victorian galleries sit comfortably alongside modern museums and dynamic art spaces to offer exciting alternative event spaces. More than 20,400 people are employed directly in the creative and media sectors in the region and there is a huge diversity of talent from animation and film to post-production, digital and media businesses, many of whom are represented by membership organisation Bristol Media. In 2015 Bristol Media celebrated its 10th anniversary and is one of the largest, most connected creative organisations in the UK with over 500 members, 4,000 subscribers to its newsletters and more than 30,000 followers on social media. Its mission is to drive innovation and creativity across the South West creative and media sectors, building the fame of the region. Paul Appleby, Chair of Bristol Media and Creative Sector Chair at the West of England LEP, said: “The dynamic creative sector in Bristol is the cornerstone of the wider LEP area, which includes Bath, and is now the third point on a triangle with Manchester and London. Creative England, Creative Skillset and the BBC have key bases in each, and we have global centres of excellence in factual programmes, animation and the emerging field of virtual reality. The creative industries across the South West are growing fast, and are now larger than those in the North West. Within the LEP, Creative Industries sit alongside High Tech and Low Carbon as the foremost sectors for inward investment and are the focus of the Enterprise Zone in Temple Quarter, which will be home to the Bristol Arena, plus huge redevelopments of the Paintworks creative centre and Engine Shed. This houses Bristol University’s SETsquared incubator, recognized as the world’s best.

It’s the connection between creative and technology that makes the region so exciting, and future-facing.” Fraser Bradshaw is the founder of creative agency saintnicks and the CEO of Bristol Media. He said: “Part of Bristol’s unique appeal is the collaborative nature of the businesses and individuals that work within its creative economy. There has been clear crossover and collaboration amongst film, digital, social, PR and creative agencies, creating a new generation of agencies and a host of new platform technology businesses within the region. Following a recent survey, 45% of Bristol Media members said they collaborated ‘often’ or ‘very often’ with 67% considering the city’s creative community to be ‘very open to collaboration’. The development of talent and the quality of work produced here is excellent and the region’s Oscar, BAFTA and Cannes Lions winners are proof of this. The creative sector in the South West is booming and is recognised as one of the strongest in the UK. According to DCMS Creative Industries Focus on Employment 2015, our creative economy has overtaken that of the North West. Second only to London and the South East, the South West now employs 156,000 in the creative industries and remains within the top five clusters in the UK for the creative and media sector.” Bristol is also the base for the multi-award-winning Aardman Animations, home to Morph, Shaun the Sheep and Wallace & Gromit. Banksy and Upfest, Europe’s largest street art and graffiti festival, have also ensured the city is increasingly recognised internationally for its street art. The city’s streets offer an incredible outdoor gallery with expert guided walks, plus the opportunity to create your own masterpiece.

Green Bristol Bristol is one of the UK’s leading cities for sustainable development. Not only that, but it is the proud home to leading environmental and ethical organisations such as the Soil Association, Triodos Bank and Sustrans. During 2015, Bristol held the title of European Green Capital – the first UK city to be awarded this prestigious title. An exciting engagement programme for the public was developed, as well as business-led events exploring sustainability and the environment, embracing both debate and cultural celebration as the city welcomed a host of international events and speakers to share ideas and inspiration on developing a green future. Bristol venues understand the impact of their business upon the environment and many venues are accredited through programmes such as the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS). This recognises business excellence in sustainable management and environmental impact, and there are many accredited venues in the Bristol area including gold award winners Radisson Blu, At-Bristol Science Centre, Folly Farm, Mercure Holland House Hotel & Spa and the Create Centre, with many others reaching silver and bronze awards. Food and drink is also extremely important and many venues pride themselves on being able to offer a specific locally sourced menu. Located on Bristol’s Harbourside, Bordeaux Quay was the UK’s first eco restaurant to achieve a gold rating under the Soil Association’s sustainable catering scheme and only one of a small number of restaurants in the UK to be recognised as a Three Star

08

Bristol Venue Directory 2016

Sustainability Champion by the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA). Venues such as Watershed are also recognised through accreditation schemes acknowledging their commitment to highquality, freshly-prepared food using British and locally-sourced seasonal produce. Bristol is also widely recognised as the leading fair trade city in the UK with annual events celebrating fair trade across the city, including hosting the first ever Fair Trade Business Awards in 2012, the first regional Fair Trade Business Awards in 2013 and the International Fair Trade Towns Conference in 2015. For a major urban city, Bristol has a vast amount of outdoor space. There are over 450 beautiful parks and green spaces in Bristol, proportionally more than any other UK city. This means that your delegates are never far away from somewhere to stretch their legs and grab a bit of fresh air. As well as having a green centre, the city is surrounded by the beautiful countryside of South Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds to the north of the city and North Somerset and the Mendips to the south, offering a range of country house hotels, wildlife attractions, mansion houses and castles to host events. Bristol is also home to the world-renowned BBC Natural History Unit and Wildscreen festival, the world’s largest and most prestigious international wildlife and environmental film festival. Great Western Dockyard, Bristol BS1 6TY T F E W

Located beside Bristol’s historic harbour and within easy walking distance of city centre hotels, the site benefits from good road access and plentiful car parking. Passenger ferries also stop outside, with regular services to the train station. Venue options range from exhibition spaces and conference suites for 250 delegates to smaller meeting and break-out rooms. Events such as cocktail receptions and pre-dinner networking functions often take place on the ship’s deck offering some of Bristol’s finest views. Catering can range from sandwich lunches and buffets to lavish gala banquets, including the option of using the ship’s elegant First Class Dining Saloon for dinners. Whatever the size or requirements for your event, Brunel’s ss Great Britain and the purposebuilt conference venue No. 1 Brunel Square offer plenty of options at Bristol’s number-onerated visitor attraction (TripAdvisor 2015). The ship was launched in 1843 as the world’s first great ocean liner and, now back in her original Dry Dock in a stunning historic setting, provides an inspirational backdrop for meetings, dinners, exhibitions and events. Delegates benefit from the superb location and opportunity to explore the ss Great Britain during the day including the Engine Room, first class and steerage cabins, galley and decks where history is brought to life. Guided tours can be arranged. We recommend including Brunel’s ss Great Britain and No. 1 Brunel Square in your shortlists as viewing the versatile venue spaces alongside the unique setting shows the true range of options.

The University of Bristol’s diverse and impressive building portfolio enables it to open up some of the city’s finest venues for conferences, exhibitions, meetings and social events. This is amongst the greatest choice of venues for all occasions you’ll find in the south west. There are elegant mansions in charming Georgian Clifton; and spacious, more modern facilities in Stoke Bishop on the edge of the Downs. And the University precinct itself offers modern tiered lecture theatres seating up to 380. The impressive and iconic neo-gothic Great Hall in the Wills Memorial Building can seat 800. There’s no shortage of overnight accommodation in summer months, with 600 rooms (many en-suite) available in Clifton near the city’s commercial heart, or in tranquil Stoke Bishop. Most meeting rooms can be booked throughout the year, and most of the University’s other excellent venues are available either in the evenings and weekends, or on weekdays out-of-term.
