Discover Bristol Innovative Bristol

With strong engineering roots and a thriving start-up culture, Bristol is famed for its ideas and innovation fed by two excellent universities. One of history’s most groundbreaking engineers, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, found his home in this forward-thinking city and created some of his most memorable masterpieces here, including Brunel’s ss Great Britain, the world’s first great ocean liner. No doubt he would be proud to see Bristol continuing to lead the way in engineering, aerospace and tech; helping new ideas flourish into game-changing inventions. In fact today’s big ideas can even take shape in Brunel’s Boardroom at the Engine Shed – the engineer’s original thinking space. Working alongside top players such as Boeing, Hewlett Packard and Toshiba are many start-ups and fast growing companies like Ultrahaptics, which specialises in touchless technology, and Open Bionics, building the next generation of prosthetics. The city hosts some notable events including the VR World Congress, the largest virtual reality conference on the planet, and the Festival of Ideas, a year-round programme of stimulating talks and debates. Smaller events include the Pint of Science talks in May where local scientists, including from Bristol Robotics Laboratory, showcase their ideas in pubs around the city. From the very beginning, talent is fostered through initiatives such as SETsquared, which UBI Global declared best universityled incubator in 2016. Strong academic programmes at both universities attract the best local and international students. Bristol University, one of the top 50 universities in the world, even runs special Innovation Programmes allowing students to become tomorrow’s change makers by pursuing their academic specialism

08

and applying it in a multi-disciplinary, real-life context. While University of the West of England’s (UWE) aerospace and engineering courses are linked with leading local employers such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce and the Ministry of Defence. Their Pervasive Media Studio, meanwhile, explores creative technologies. Amazing venues to inspire include Aerospace Bristol (opening summer 2017) where delegates can dine under the wings of Concorde 216, Brunel’s magnificent ss Great Britain, the new Engine Shed - a collaborative ideas hub housed in Brunel’s original station, both universities and At-Bristol Science Centre, which is home to the UK’s first 3D planetarium. There are also plenty of exciting opportunities for behind-the-scenes tours and experiences. Sustainable Bristol

Bristol is one of the UK’s leading cities for sustainable development and home to leading environmental and ethical organisations such as the Soil Association, Triodos Bank and Sustrans. During 2015, Bristol was European Green Capital – the first UK city to be awarded this prestigious title. An exciting engagement programme for the public was developed, as well as business-led events exploring sustainability and the environment, to share ideas on developing a green future. Bristol continues to wave the flag for all things green with lots of environmentally minded events and eye-opening tours and talks year-round. We’re widely recognised as the leading Fair Trade city in the UK and home to other inspiring initiatives such as community food growing movement Incredible Edible. The famous BBC Natural History Unit is also based in Bristol, as is Wildscreen Festival, the world’s largest wildlife and environmental film festival.

The city’s venues understand the impact of their business upon the environment and many venues are accredited through programmes such as the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS). Accredited venues include gold award winners Radisson Blu, AtBristol Science Centre, Folly Farm, Mercure Holland House Hotel & Spa and the Create Centre. Food and drink is extremely important and many venues pride themselves on offering a locally sourced menu. Located on Bristol’s Harbourside, Bordeaux Quay was the UK’s first eco restaurant to achieve a gold rating under the Soil Association’s sustainable catering scheme. Venues such as Watershed are also acknowledged for their commitment to high-quality, freshly prepared food using seasonal, local produce. Annual citywide festival Food Connections brings the artisan and slow food revolution to the public through pop-up restaurants, talks and workshops. Bristol has over 450 beautiful parks and green spaces – proportionally more than any other UK city. This means your delegates are never far away from somewhere to stretch their legs and grab some fresh air. It’s also surrounded by the beautiful countryside of South Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds to the north and North Somerset and the Mendips to the south, with country house hotels, castles and wildlife attractions for events. Creative Bristol

Bristol is a city known for its vibrant creative culture and in recent years has seen its reputation grow to become an important and influential international creative hub. The city’s sense of unorthodoxy has always driven its creativity, and it is increasingly recognised as one of the most dynamic cultural cities in the UK. The beautiful, historical Bristol Museum and Art Gallery

and Royal West of England Academy sit comfortably alongside modern museums and dynamic art spaces like Arnolfini, Spike Island and Watershed, all of which offer exciting alternative event spaces. Alternatively, take a look at the city’s live music venues, including Colston Hall, currently celebrating its 150th birthday, and Grade II-listed concert hall St George’s Bristol. High-profile events like biennial live art festival IBT17 Bristol International Festival, The Other Art Fair and Encounters Short Film & Animation Festival all add colour throughout the year. Bristol Film Office welcomes a growing number of film and TV companies to the city, which make use of the cutting-edge facilities found at Bottle Yard Studios as well as the city’s diverse filming locations. Recent high-profile productions have included Wolf Hall, Poldark and Sherlock. More than 20,400 people are employed directly in the creative and media sectors in the region and there is a huge diversity of talent from animation and film to post-production. Many of Bristol’s creative workers are represented by membership organisation Bristol Media – it is one of the largest, most connected creative organisations in the UK with more than 600 members, 4,500 subscribers to its newsletters and over 30,000 followers on social media. Its mission is to drive innovation and creativity across the South West creative and media sectors, building the fame of the region. Bristol is also home to multi-award-winning Aardman Animations, creators of Morph, Shaun the Sheep and Wallace and Gromit. They run creative awaydays where attendees can learn to make models from the experts. Banksy and Upfest, Europe’s largest street art and graffiti festival, have also ensured the city is increasingly recognised internationally for its street art. The city’s streets offer an incredible outdoor gallery with expert guided walks, plus the opportunity to create your own masterpiece in group workshops.

The University of Bristol’s diverse and impressive building portfolio enables it to open up some of the city’s finest venues for conferences, exhibitions, meetings and social events. This is amongst the greatest choice of venues for all occasions you’ll find in the south west. There are elegant mansions in charming Georgian Clifton; and spacious, more modern facilities in Stoke Bishop on the edge of the Downs. And the University precinct itself offers modern tiered lecture theatres seating up to 380. The impressive and iconic neo-gothic Great Hall in the Wills Memorial Building can seat 800. There’s no shortage of overnight accommodation in summer months, with 600 rooms (many en-suite) available in Clifton near the city’s commercial heart, or in tranquil Stoke Bishop. Most meeting rooms can be booked throughout the year, and most of the University’s other excellent venues are available either in the evenings and weekends, or on weekdays out-of-term.
