1.3 FACTS AND HISTORY ABOUT BERGEN

Bergen is an international city with small-town charm and atmosphere. The inhabitants love to show off their beautiful and nuarced city. They are proud of Bergen’s shipping, trading and cultural traditions. The city with it’s approx. 275.000 inhabitants is like a spectacular amphitheatre clambering up the mountainsides, overlooking the sea, embracing you. You can roam through living history in this modern city, the gateway to the wildest and loveliest fjords of Norway. Tradition, initiative and drive have made Bergen one of Norway’s most vigorous cultural cities. It is not merely by chance that Norway’s biggest cultural event, the Bergen International Festival, is held here each year, or that the town was chosen to be one of the European Cities of Culture in the year 2000. The old parts of the city are living history, and the museums and galleries keep both art and the ancestral heritage alive.

Leo’s Playland is Scandinavia’s largest amusement park chain. All amusement parks have bike lanes, slides, softball cannons, trampolines and much more fun. Founded in the 15th c., St. George’s was a hospital for lepers until the middle of the 20th c. The present day buildings date back to the 18th c. The beautiful villa on Lysøen was built as a summer residence for the Norwegian violin virtuoso Ole Bull in 1873. Open to the public in the summer. The ice bar is the work of world renowned ice carvers, they re-craft the bar several times every year. The old knitwear factory (1858-1989) has now re-opened as a new museum. Visitors can see the whole process from spinning the wool to the finished product. On 30 April 1942, the community of Telavåg was deleted from the map when the Germans discovered the village was trafficking men across the North Sea. Visit Norway’s newest and finest exhibitions about life along the coast and at sea. The museum is located in authentic wharfside warehouses as old as Bryggen. The open-air Old Bergen Museum is a reconstructed small town consisting of around 50 wooden houses dating from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Oleana has become the 11th Économusée in Norway. An Économusée is a concept where old handicraft traditions come to life through an open factory where one can see handicraft being produced and buy the products. Oleana is at the intersection of craft, culture and research. The future belongs to storytellers. Open air museum with buildings from the 17th century to 1920. Exhibits highlighting the fjord culture in the rural villages north of Bergen. Sunday café. Old steam locomotive running along the 18 km line between Garnes and Midttun in Bergen. Railway Museum and souvenir shop at Garnes Station. Norwegian and international portrait art, sculptures and paintings. Hilmar Reksten’s collection of silver and antique Persian carpets. The tower was built in the 1560s by the governor of Bergen Castle (Bergenhus), Erik Rosenkrantz, and served as a combined residence and fortified tower. S12 is an artist run exhibition space and open access studio for art and design specializing in glass and ceramics. One of the most important Norwegian composers of this century. The house from 1939 is made of wood and natural stone, with elements from old building traditions. St Mary`s church is the oldest existing building in Bergen. To judge by its architectural style, it was probably built between 1130 and 1170. The Museum, set in a beautiful maritime area, traces the lives of Øygarden’s coastal inhabitants from the ice age until the present day. The Hanseatic Museum is one of the oldest wooden buildings in Bergen, furnished in 18th century style and shows the life of the Hanseatic merchants. The Heathland Centre is a visitors centre for cultural landscape on the European coast of the Atlantic. These types of landscapes are 5000 years old. The Theta museum is the secret room of the Theta Group of the Resistance Movement during the occupation of Norway from 1940 to 1945. Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen was the home of composer Edvard Grieg for 22 years. He composed many of his best-known works in the little garden hut. Most toll stations in Norway are automatic. This means that you should not stop when passing. All vehicles without AutoPASS will have their license plate photographed. If you don’t have AutoPASS or a Visitors Payment contract an invoice will be sent by mail to the owner of the car, at no extra charge. This also applies for foreign vehicles. You can also pay toll at the petrol stations close to the toll station. Payment must be made within three working days after passing the toll point. Look for the sign: ”Kr-service”.

PAY TOLL WITH AUTOPASS

AutoPASS is another way to pay toll in Norway. AutoPASS is an electronic payment system, where you use an AutoPASS tag as the means of payment. Foreign vehicles can also utilise AutoPASS, and this arrangement is useful if you plan to stay in Norway for more than two months. To get an AutoPASS you should: – Sign an agreement with one of the Toll Road Operators in Norway, and get a discount at many toll plazas. – You pay a deposit of NOK 200 for the AutoPASS tag. Each time you pass through a toll station the fee is deducted from our account. When you leave Norway you can return the AutoPASS tag by standard mail to the Toll Road Operator, at the same time as you terminate your agreement. You will then receive your deposit back and any remainder on your account. Contact: Bro- og Tunnelselskapet AS bergen@brotunnel.no - www.brotunnel.no Waste disposal facilities Road no.
