Retired schoolmaster Mussaddi Lal Tripathi (Pankaj Kapoor), the quintessential "Common Man" troubled by his wife's serious illness takes her to the hospital where the utter negligence and vested interests of the doctors result in her untimely death. Mussaddi then along with his young unemployed, drifter son, Bunty (Gaurav Kapoor) he sets out for his pilgrimage to the four Holy sites for the immersion of his wife's ashes. In his absence, pension officers arrive at Mussaddi's house to enquire his status. Musaddi's neighbour Gupta tells them that Mussaddi has gone far away, and the Pension Officers interpret that Mussaddi Lal has expired, and report him dead in their files. When Mussaddi returns he discovers to his utter shock that he is dead according to Government Files. He tries his heart out to make the Pension Office staff believe that he is alive, but they are not convinced at all as they want proper proof.

The film explores themes of feminism and motherhood in a male-dominated Indian society. Filming took place on the streets of Kolkata with Ghosh employing the art of guerrilla filmmaking to avoid unwanted attention. Ghosh admitted to using several allusions to Satyajit Ray's films such as Charulata (1964) and Aranyer Dinratri (1970). Additionally, critics compared the twist ending of the plot to the Hollywood film Taking Lives (2004). The film was noted for a deft portrayal of Kolkata and use of a significant number of crew and cast members from the city.

It is a historical show about Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi. Jhansi Ki Rani starts with Manikarnika a.k.a Manu (Ulka Gupta),at the age of 14. She lives with her father Moropant Tambe(Shailesh Dattar) who is a Pandit in the court of Peshwa Baji Rao II (Ravindra Mankani) and Nana Saheb(Satyajeet Dube) in Bithoor. She is trained by Tatya Tope (Amit Pachori). She hates to see British rule India and is a threat to them. She takes the form of Kranti Guru to tackle them. She becomes a rival to the British official named Manson(Edward Sonnenblick), who creates various troubles for her. She gradually overcomes the troubles. When a marriage proposal from Jhansi Naresh Maharaj Gangadhar Rao Newalkar (Sameer Dharmadhikari) comes her way her life changes from a common lady to a Maharani(Queen). The British with Moti Bai foils various attempts to kill her but Manu makes friends with Samar Singh (Siddharth Vasudev) who was actually appointed to kill her. She continuously brings good luck to Jhansi after her marriage and so as per Maharashtrian tradition her name was changed to Lakshmi Bai. She enters the Jhansi's court only to find it filled with enemies in the name of relation, namely Lachhu Bai (Amita Nangia),Sakku Bai (Jaya Bhattacharya), Janaki Bai, Ali Bahadur (Tarun Khana).
