As Fire Prevention Week™ approaches, Wallace District Fire Department reminds residents:

Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!

BY BRAD YOCHIM FIRE CHIEF WDFD

The Wallace District Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®)—the official sponsor of Fire Pre ve nt i on We ek for more than 90 years—to

promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” The campaign works to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. In Canada, most fire deaths occur in the home, where p eople b elie ve they are most safe. Canadian fire departments respond to roughly 25,600 structure fires per year. In 2015, structure fires caused more than 1,400

injuries and almost 200 deaths*. (*Fire data for 2012-2016 was obtained from 10 of the 13 provincial and territorial offices of the fire marshal/fire commissioner; 2015 is the most recent year for which injury/fatality data is available.) “These numbers show that home fires continue to pose a significant threat to safety,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely

from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out. While NFPA and the Wallace District Fire Department are focusing on home fires, these messages apply to virtually any location. “Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go, No matter where you are, look for available exits. If the alarm system sounds, take it seriously and exit

the building immediately.” For more general information ab out Fire Prevention Week and home escape planning, visit www.fpw.org. Wallace District Fire Department has responded to only a couple of house fires so far this year. Both incidents involved cooking left unattended on the stove. Kitchen fires continue to be the most common location in the home for fires to occur. Never leave cooking unattended. Have a fire extinguisher nearby in the kitchen and always have children accompanied by an adult when meals are being prepared. Home fire escape planning and drills are an essential part of fire safety. A home fire escape plan needs to be developed and practiced before a fire strikes. A home escape plan should include: • Two exits from every room in the home – usually a door and a window • Properly installed and working smoke alarms • A meeting place outside

in front of the home where everyone will meet after they exit • A call to 9-1-1 or the local emergency number from a cell phone or a neighbour’s phone Smoke alarms continue to provide early detection of fires and are crucial in escaping a home fire • Smoke alarms can mean the difference between life and death in a fire. • Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half. • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. • Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button. • Make sure everyone in the home understands the sound of the smoke alarm and knows how to respond. Fire prevention in the home is everybody’s responsibility and hopefully these tips can help you to make your home fire safe.

We thank you, Fireoghters ...for all you do 154023 PR #257, Virden, MB (Jct of Hwy #83 & PR #257) • P: 204-748-1239 • F: 204-748-3450 • E: info@wallace-woodworth.com
