AS FIRE PREVENTION WEEK™ APPROACHES, WALLACE DISTRICT FIRE DEPARTMENT REMINDS RESIDENTS

Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!™

BRAD YOCHIM FIRE CHIEF WALLACE DISTRICT FIRE DEPT

40 Years of Service

The Wallace District Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) - the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years - to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!” The campaign works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep

themselves and those around them safe. According to NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in Canada. Almost half (44%) of reported home fires started in the kitchen. Two-thirds (66%) of home cooking fires start with the ignition of food or other cooking materials. “We know cooking fires can be prevented,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice-president of outreach and advocacy. “Staying in the kitchen, using a timer, and avoiding distractions such as electronics or TV are steps everyone can take to keep families safe in their homes.” The Wallace District Fire Department encourages all residents to embrace the 2020 Fire Prevention Week theme. “The most important step you should take before making a meal is to “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!” said Fire Chief Brad Yochim. “A cooking fire can grow quickly. I have seen many homes damaged and people in-

jured by fires that could easily have been prevented.” Wallace District Fire Department wants to share safety tips to keep you from having a cooking fire. Never leave cooking food unattended. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling or broiling. If you have to leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove. If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you’re cooking.

You have to be alert when cooking. You won’t be alert if you are sleepy, have taken

medicine or drugs, or consumed alcohol that makes you drowsy. Always keep an oven mitt and pan lid nearby when you’re cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan to smother the flame. Turn off the burner, and leave the pan covered until it is completely cool. Have a “kid-free zone” of at least three feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. Smoke alarms are one of the best life-saving tools you can have in your home.

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT SMOKE ALARMS • Smoke alarms detect and alert people to a fire in the early stages and can mean the difference between life and death in a fire.

• Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half. • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.

• Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button. • Make sure everyone in the home understands the sound of the smoke alarm and knows how to respond.

The Wallace District Fire Department is again offering to come to your home and check your smoke alarms. If they need to be replaced we will replace them at no cost to you. The smoke alarms we are installing now come with a 10-year lithium battery so you never have to worry about replacing the battery. After 10 years, the smoke alarm will begin to chirp which is an indicator to replace it with a new alarm. Limit of two smoke alarms per home. In order to qualify, you must own your own home. Rental property does not qualify and we cannot touch smoke alarms that are hardwired into the home electrical system. If you are interested please contact Fire Chief Brad Yochim at (204)748-1304 or email wdfd1@wcgwave.ca

Thanksgiving Safety The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially at Thanksgiving. Kids love to be involved in holiday preparations. Safety in the kitchen is important, especially on Thanksgiving Day when there is a lot of activity and people at home.

• Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food. • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently. • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away. • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns. • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags. • Keep knives out of the reach of children. • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child. • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet. • Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle. • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

Did you know?

Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking equipment.

Have activities that

keep kids out of the kitchen during this busy time. Games, puzzles or books can keep them busy. Kids can get involved in Thanksgiving preparations with recipes that can be done outside the kitchen.
