Room 29 first grade students let their imagination run wild. They imagined what if there was an animal that had the appearance of two different animals. They then imagined its habitat, what it would eat and what special things it could do. With all that in mind, the students then illustrated their special animal.

How We Made Our Imaginary Animal Book (Project was made using an Apple Mac) 1. In the classroom, students studied about animals, what they eat and where they live. 2. We used a free, downloadable drawing program called Tux Paint (http://www.tuxpaint.org) to draw imaginary animals we created by combining two animals we learned about. 3. A computer snapshot was taken of our finished picture using the Apple command key plus shift key plus the number 4 key. The image appeared on our computer desktop. 4. A Word template was made in MS Word for students to use. Each of the students opened the template and saved a page for themselves in the classroom’s shared folder. 5. The template included a box created with MS Word draw tool in which students inserted (using drag and drop) their Tux Paint drawing. 6. The template also included the beginning of sentences after which students typed their words. 7. Teachers designed a cover for their students’ Imaginary Animal book and briefly explained how the project tied in with the curriculum and what the project was about. 8. When all of the students were finished with their MS Word page, the teacher inserted each of the student’s files behind the teacher’s cover page using (Insert > File). 9. This “How To” page was added for reference for future projects. 10. Once the book was completed, we converted it to a .pdf file (File > Print. From the PDF menu in the Print window, select > Save as PDF > Save) to keep the same paging and fonts selected. 11. We then uploaded the .pdf file to a publishing website called ISSUU (http://issuu.com). 12. Once the book was uploaded online for all to see, we added the embed code for that book provided by ISSUU on our website to share our book. We hope you enjoy our Imingary Animal Book created by first graders.
