Chairman’s Report

Hi folks As the newly elected branch Chairman I would like to thank Leon for the past nine years of leading this branch to where it is now and appreciate that he has set very high standards to follow. I would also like to thank Brendda in her role as secretary and support person to him. Welcome to the members who have joined the committee and I look forward to you offering new ideas and supporting me in my new role. Jeanette Lloyd is taking over the secretary role and I look forward to her assistance. Many thanks to those members who have beavered away in the background in the past year particularly those who are not committee members but who willingly give of their time regardless – you don’t always get the kudos you deserve. This past month has been a very busy time which sadly commenced with the funeral of Franz Edgar. Many thanks to all the members who attended this to support his family and pay tribute to his enthusiastic support of our club, particularly with his involvement on the committee and in his co-ordinator role for our mid-week picnics and lunches. Many thanks to Frances Ross for the organising of and plotting the Twilight Run through the new areas being developed in both Warkworth and Snells Beach, ending at Salty Dog Inn. I appreciate the time and effort that goes into this activity and it certainly took some members to places they had never been and didn’t know existed. The run was very well attended but was sadly overshadowed by the accident sustained by Franz when he suffered a heart attack which later claimed his life. His death was announced during the evening meal. Our May mid-week lunch run was to Morris and James and numbers were down for this venue with some regular attendees away. Club dinner night also had fewer members attending but again a lot of members were away including Sheryl and I as we were in Taupo for our elder daughter’s wedding. Cleaning day saw only a few attend but as there was not much required to be done it was soon completed. Last Sunday dawned fine and sunny and the Triple Combined commenced at North Shore VCC clubrooms where we were joined by a large group of Model A vehicles - a total of 32 vehicles from all three clubs. The tour took in areas around Albany and on to Waitoki School for lunch, continuing north to the Mangakuru Boating Club on SH 16 and then the third stage through Tauhora and Kaipara to our club rooms for a great afternoon tea provided by members and wonderful scones baked by Dennis and Anne Mcdonald who oversaw the afternoon. Many thanks to them for all their work they put into achieving this which was greatly enjoyed by everyone. Congratulations to Anne and Doug Hamilton this year’s overall winners. Thanks to Anne Richardson for plotting the final section for which our club was responsible. Maybe next year more of our members will take part in this enjoyable run. Please give some thought and feedback to the committee meeting suggestion of providing the club with emergency contact details of family not living with you and also medical details. These would not be made public but held securely for use in emergency only

Club Captain’s Report I return from an amazing holiday with Anne Hamilton to the sad news of Franz’s passing. He has been an enthusiastic supporter of the club and friend to me too. The AGM was last week and I have agreed to continue for one more year, ably supported by the team of Frances, Neil, and John. Nigel Robinson has joined with a particular interest in motorcycles. The Triple Combined Rally seems to be a great success. There were 31 cars. Mainly due to our visitors from the Model A club (13 cars). Thank you to all those who helped with afternoon tea. There were only 5 from Wellsford Warkworth, but we did win this year! Well done to Doug and Anne Hamilton. We look forward to a busy time over the next few months. I will be coming to you for help to run our part of the National Daffodil Rally for Cancer. It requires a different approach to our usual rally activities. In particular it needs volunteers to commit to organisation, fund raising or club promoting activities, and to come regardless of the weather! June activities start with our Wednesday 6 Cafe visit to Wainui Golf and Events Centre. This is a new venue for us to try. Club Night on 14 will be devoted to improving our navigation skills! Denis and Leon will take us through the terminology and other rules. Pot luck dinner that night. Then on Sunday 24 we will put our new knowledge into practice on our Sunday Run. Meet at the car park behind the old BNZ. Arrive at 1.00pm and bring pen/pencil, and a board is helpful to lean on. We will finish at our clubrooms so bring an afternoon tea plate to share while we review how it all went. This is aimed at our newer members but help and participation from those of you who consider yourselves as experienced would be welcome. Just an excuse to drive your car! July 7/8 is our Winter Woollies Wander, so you will be prepared to enter? The entry form is in this month’s newsletter. And don’t forget the Coffee and Cleaning morning on June 20 . th

At some stage, Anne and I are happy to share some of our photos from our trip. You will know that Cuba has been in limbo since the Bay of Pigs episode. We walked out of the airport to an amazing scene. The first car we saw was a bright yellow Morris Minor, and lots of Chevvys. I guess about half of all the cars on the road were 1950s to 1970s. They were mostly American and Chevrolets were certainly the most seen. More another day. Happy and Safe Motoring, Anne Richardson & team.
