Dean Packwood Welcome to another issue of Taupo Torque. The Taupo Vintage Car Club has had another full month of activities. We have part two of a series on my project, the Packmobile Special (on page 16). I start the restoration and hopefully I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew. The annual Starlight Cinema Hobby Expo was held at A.C. Baths, Taupo, and we had a few of our cars on display. Some photos from the weekend are on page 32. Please don’t hesitate to email your stories, articles or photos to me at editor@ taupovcc.org for inclusion in this magazine. Cheers, Dean Packwood

Chairman’s Report

Neil Chave Chairman’s Report – August 2018 In July our club night hosted a presentation from the CEO of the Waikato Division of the Cancer Society to update us on what was happening within the Taupo area and the range of services available. This was an appropriate time for this update from the Society as we head into August when the club is actively committed to with its support of Daffodil Day later in the month. Also in July the club event was at the Taupo Hobbies Expo, and we had an eclectic range of sporty convertibles and a Lotus Europa on show as well as Editor Dean Packwood’s chassis of the ‘Packmobile Special.’ Many thanks to Kelvin and his team of exhibitors and for organising this important display at the hobbies expo. In August the annual ‘Fish & Chip –Quiz night’ is scheduled for Wednesday, August 8th commencing at 6.00pm. This year the Quizmaster is Chris Smith, and he has prepared a wide range of general knowledge questions that are sure to test all. As this is a fish & chip meal, you will be phoned by a committee member firstly to check whether you are coming and what your order will be. Each packet will contain 2 pieces of fish & a scoop of chips. Bread etc. and an ice-cream with tea/ coffee will follow. You are welcome to bring your favourite bottle of wine too! On Sunday 19th we have the ‘Chairman’s Run’ run to Tihoi Tavern – about a 40-minute comfortable drive from Taupo. We have been before, and members have enjoyed the rustic atmosphere. We shall be leaving the club rooms in convoy at 11.15am to arrive at the Tihoi pub about midday for a lamb on the spit with salads and dessert for $18.00 per person. Seating is often a problem at this venue so please bring a picnic chair to sit on. As mentioned August is Daffodil Day month, and the club will be supporting this important fund-raiser in two ways. Firstly we AUGUST 2018

shall be delivering the fresh bunches of daffodils to local businesses on Monday 27th August and will need volunteers to help with this from the club rooms to local businesses on Monday 27th morning starting at 9.00am. These flowers have already been paid for, so it is simply the delivery we are arranging. Also on Sunday 26th August, we have the ‘Daffodil Rally for Cancer’ that will hopefully attract as many of our own members as possible as well as the wider public. The run will leave the clubrooms at 1.00pm and head towards Kinloch. The entry fee is $10.00 with all funds going to the local Cancer Society. Please let as many of your friends & family know about the run and invite them along. It is open to all cars regardless of age. See page 12. Also during August, the National body of the VCC of NZ will be holding the AGM in Napier so a number of our members will be attending this to make a contribution and hear what is going on at a national level. Club Captain’s Report

Tony Mannington Club Captain’s Report – August 2018 I will try not to repeat myself as Neil has already covered what’s been and about what’s coming up. Thanks Neil. I will try and look further ahead. But I would like to thank those Club Members that made a special effort to attend our Club Night with guest speakers from the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society on not such a warm night. See thank you letters at the end of this report. Thanks to Kelvin for organising the roster and all the Club Members who made themselves available over the weekend to man our display of cars at the Hobby Expo. Also, we must say thanks to the car owners for allowing their pride and joys to be displayed, Kelvin, Rod, Murray, Chris and Dean’s (chassis only) Packmobile Special. August Club Night, Fish and Chips, Quiz Night, mark the calendar. Coming up in September we have our Breakfast Run... Do we have anybody that is willing to give us a hand? helping hand with setting a short course possibly leaving the library at 9.00am for approximately 1hr and finishing at the Clubrooms. Has anybody got some rally route ideas to share? Taupo VCC Rally is coming up on the 9th & 10th March 2019 and again we are looking for Members to put their hand up to help out. Over the last couple of years we have got together a pretty good package, and we have put systems in place for a successful Rally. Planning will start in September with our first Rally Committee Meeting. Are you available with fresh ideas, helping to plot the rally route or just helping out where required? Reflecting back on the 2018 Rally, we had a competitive section in the morning, returned to the Clubrooms for lunch and had a Touring section in the afternoon. This worked very successfully and allowed our markers in the afternoon to get the results out. For 2019 Rally we are also looking for a lunch stop where there is plenty of parking. Anybody connected to a group that wishes to do a little fund-raiser for that group, possibly 60 to 100 lunches. Contact Neil or Tony for information. Our Club Captain Tour is filling up fast, (12 cars)so if you wish to be involved, Please book your accommodation in Napier and let me know and will put you on the email list. See page 37 for more information. By the way, did you know that marriage is like a railway station sign?...... First you STOP, then you LOOK, and then you LISTEN! Tony. Hi Shelly, On behalf of the Taupo VCC I would like to thank you and your team including Maurice and Carren for your wonderful presentation at our Club Night.

It gave us all an insight of what's happening in our region of what the Cancer Society is doing. Shelly, Thank you so much that you could fit us in to your busy schedule by stopping off in Taupo on your way home. To me personally, we had a good turnout and the meeting went as planned by being finished by 8.30 and then allowing everyone time to catchup and discuss with you, Carren and Maurice about what you said. We have already had some positive feedback about the evening and I hope that we all took away something positive, that there is help out there to who ever may need it. Thanks again. Cheers Tony Mannington, Club Captain, TaupoVCC Morning Tony Lovely to hear from you and thanks for taking the time to send such a lovely note. It was certainly our pleasure to come along and feedback to your members around what their efforts help us to achieve with Cancer Society across the region and locally. It was a great turn out indeed and a really good opportunity for people to meet Caren and hear more about how she can assist people in the community. I feel very confident that with Caren in place that service will develop from strength to strength and we are certainly keen to hear more from people affected by cancer about what services they need and value. Thanks again to you and your members for all that you have done and continue to do to raise funds and awareness for Cancer Society. Look forward to seeing you again. The Packmobile Special Part Two: The Restoration

by Dean Packwood

This is part two of a series on building a special. In last month’s issue of Taupo Torque we took a look at the Packmobile being built back in the late 80s. Now, after many years in storage, it’s in a bad need of a restoration.

16

AUGUST 2018

Above: Don Packwood, the creator of the Packmobile, pumping up one of the tyres so it can be wheeled up onto a transport trailer.

Back in the late 80s, my father, Don, would take me out in the Packmobile, around the back roads around Te Kuiti, and teach me to drive. I loved driving the Packmobile. When I was about 21, I drove it back from the Wairarapa to Te Kuiti on my first long solo trip. When I started out, it poured down with rain for about an hour... Then, clear sky and I was all air-dried out in no time. One of the great memories I have driving this car.

Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine | Taupo Torque

Then, in the mid 90’s, for one reason or another, the Packmobile found itself being stored away gathering dust. So I jumped at the chance to bring the Packmobile back to life when Don, asked if I wanted to take it over. I don’t have a lot of experience with working on cars, but I’m a bit of a “Jack of all trades” and will give it a go. Besides, this is old school, how complicated could it be?

Left: After an unsuccessful attempt to pump up the front left tyre, Don and Chris Woodman change it out for a spare. Below: The Packmobile loaded up on a trailer for the trip from Tauranga to Taupo.

Above: Before totally dismantling, Dean Packwood sees if the ‘old girl’ will start up. Below: Stripping of the mudguards, body panels and fixtures. Below right: More framing and radiator removed.

18

AUGUST 2018

We towed the Packmobile back to Taupo. Right away, I thought I’d better check if she still runs. The fuel in the tank was like paint thinners, and the fuel line was all blocked up. So, I took off the fuel pump, gave it a clean, then connected a makeshift fuel line. Used the crank handle to make sure the engine hadn’t ceased, hooked up jumper cables and pulled the starter. A few tries and she started right up, it was a great relief... One problem avoided.

Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine | Taupo Torque

Left/Above: Taking out the seats, old carpet and interior panels. The Seats and panels are in great condition, but the carpet needs to be replaced. Maybe the seat-belts too.

Now I knew the engine was running, I looked more closely over the car. The Body was in really good condition, however, there was a lot of surface rust on the chassis, and it really needed sanding and repainting. I figured if I’m going to go all out and totally strip it down, I might as well do it now. The registration, unfortunately, wasn’t put on hold either, so I didn’t want to make it harder on myself when it comes to getting the Packmobile re-registered and of course a warrant of fitness. In the end, I’ll be familiar with every inch of the car. The Packmobile was built on the 1965 Skoda Octavia Combi chassis, and as I went, I took lots of photographs with my phone so I could keep a record of

how it all goes back together. I’ve also got workshop manuals for the Skoda and the Trekka (which used the same Chassis), which will come in handy. The top and bottom of the body is covered with vinyl which has remained in perfect condition, no wear or tears. The rest of the body, although pretty good, will need to have a few paint cracks repaired, then repainted along with the front metal body panels. The leather on the seats and backrest have that old leather look which I don’t mind. There’s no holes or rips so I’ll probably leave as is. The carpet was all brittle and needs replacing so I tore that out. I will most likely seal the bottom of the cockpit properly before laying in new carpet, perhaps having a couple of drainage holes should I get stuck in a downpour again. AUGUST 2018

19

Taupo Torque | Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine

Above/Right: Because of limited space in Dean’s garage, he came up with an idea to built a lifting frame to suspend the body so he can get to the chassis. The body only weighs about 150kg.

To get to the fuel tank and chassis, the body needed to be removed entirely. Due to limited space, I figured I could suspend the body above, giving myself enough clearance to work on the chassis. The whole car only weighs about 650-700kg, the body maybe 150kg? I welded up a frame (cost about $160 in steel square tube), grabbed some straps and managed to lift the body off by myself, it worked like a charm. By this stage, I was about 3 weeks into the project (nights and weekends), so I didn’t think I was doing too bad. Borrowed an engine hoist off a mate and continued with the entire front end.

20

AUGUST 2018

Taupo Vintage Car Club Magazine | Taupo Torque

Above: A closer look at the chassis and there’s quite a bit of surface rust and corrosion, but nothing too serious. It was obvious that it made sense to strip the chassis right down to start restoring. Below: Because of his inexperience with working on engines, and the fact that the engine runs, Dean decided to not attempt to re-condition the engine, but just tidy up a few things and attempt to rebuild the spare engine once this restoration is complete. Then, swap out the engine, and rebuild this one.

Above/Left: Piece by piece, Dean sandblasts, sands and repaints each component before reassembly, starting with the front axle.

I gave the engine a wash and removed the water pump after I had a peek through the water inlet and saw heaps of crap. Cleaned all that out, hopefully, the thermostat will be o.k., but I’m yet to test it. It’s about this stage where I thought, I really got to join a club where there’s a bunch of people that really know their stuff. It turned out, some of the guys in the Taupo Vintage Car Club worked on Trekkas back in the day. By this stage, Don was pretty excited that the Packmobile was going to be back in action once again and couldn’t wait to come down and get his hands dirty. We cleaned up and repainted the AUGUST 2018

chassis, it was bringing back a lot of memories for him. I was now in the reassembly stage, which was a nice milestone, a real sense I was achieving something. This is where it started to look like the Packmobile I remembered, although it’ll have a few of my own touches. It was a real pain to try and get the right shock absorbers that would fit. I think I had to go

back to Partmaster about three times until I had the right ones, although I thought. They had the proper connection, but when I went to insert them up into position, the diameter of the dust cover was too big for the hole. Dang it! I didn’t want to have to return these again. After a quick brainstorm with Don, he mentioned that back in the old days, it was common to have leather dust covers. Brilliant! So I cut off the covers and put my old cobbler skills to good use and made leather ones. I was a pattern and hand-cutter at Fabia shoe company (Te Kuiti) when I left school many years ago. The brake cylinders had seized, so I soaked them in WD40 for about a

week, then used compressed air to pop the pistons out. They had actually been rebuilt a few years ago, but had sat in storage since then. The wheels weren’t too bad, mainly surface rust. I sanded these down, primed and repainted them. They turned out better than expected. When I took them back to Terrys Tyres to get tyres and inner-tubes (as they had previous), we didn’t need inner-tubes, the rims provided an adequate seal, so that saved a few dollars. We will continue next month with part three where there will be some more progress made, and a few more problems cropping up that will need some creative fixes.
