Introduction. Welcome to my 2018 South Island Club Captains Tour. This time we will tour the lower and mid south of the island on some roads I have enjoyed in the past and one I especially would like to do. I have never travelled the entire length of the Catlins Road from Invercargill to Balclutha so this is my opportunity to do so and to share it with other folk who enjoy driving as much as Tracy and I do. The region has a number of roads that have been on various local rallies I have attended over the years, and with a smattering of gravel, I think they can equal anything else the country has to offer. Where possible I have included some VCC Branches with meals and Parts Sheds visits and will where needed point out the all important coffee stops and toilet facilities. The day we travel from Cromwell to Twizel is a short day so that you can catch up on washing and vehicle maintenance. There is not a full lay day as the week we have chosen only requires four days off work and the possibility of driving home on the final Sunday. You are more than welcome to just do a couple of days of the tour if you choose to. At this stage my intention is to have our first “noggin on the Sunday afternoon during the public display day for the Easter Rally, this appears to be a time with little else to do but sit and chat so I am hoping we can do that together. This is however dependent on the Easter Rally team so may get changed but I will keep you informed. Cheers Alon.

The Chev 4 Roadster was originally imported to New Zealand from America in 1928 and had a number of owners, the last before restoration were shearers who had cut the back off to make a ute used for shooting and farm work. In 1968 the wreck was found under a hedge on a farm in the Hakataramea Valley ,South Island New Zealand. The vehicle was taken back to Neil’s home town of Oamaru .Restoration was carried out in a garage at a mate’s Atlantic service station . Luckily it was not far from where Neil’s family lived as the Chev often had to be pushed out in the morning and in again at night if business was busy at the garage. Restoration began in 1968 and completed just in time to participate in the 1970 International Veteran and Vintage Car Rally from Sydney to Melbourne and then on to Adelaide. There were about 100 pre war vehicles that were shipped from New Zealand to Australia to join the Rally of approximately 600 vehicles . Neil and his navigator Ken Keen had to find their own way back to Sydney. That journey back to Sydney had some interesting days as the ‘boys’ had not driven on highways with more than one lane or one way streets , and only had an old strip map to navigate . The Chev was shipped back to Christchurch and then returned to Oamaru .The Chev was used as our vehicle on our trips to NZ after we were married in 1972 until 1986 when it was again shipped to Australia , to Melbourne this time and on to Portland where it now resides. In September 1994 we travelled to Adelaide in the Chev ,with Bill Thomas in his MG , for the Bay to Birdwood Rally. A one day event with 1800 Veteran and Vintage cars from Glenelg Beach to Birdwood. The only major work done on the Chev in recent times has been a motor reconditioning which was completed by Norm McCullagh in Warrnambool .A new set of tyres has also been added. The paint work is a little cracked and showing some wear but is a good advertisement for the quality of the job done 49 years ago. We enjoy driving in the Chev as often as possible and is always better with the hood down !! This 1928 Chev 4 Roadster is about to share the shed space with a 1928 Chev 4 Speadster which is being built as a father and sons’ project . That will be another story. All British Day, to be held this Sunday 29th October, and to ask you to forward this email to all of your members. As per usual, the meeting point is the VCC grounds at McLeans Island – arrive there between 9.30 and 10.30am. This year the VCC Veteran section is meeting there at the same time, and will be conducting field tests before departing on their own run, so this will provide some interesting viewing (the cars and the field tests). At 10.30 all cars will depart on a series of runs that will conclude at Glentunnel Domain. Bring a picnic lunch, or you can purchase it along the way. The finish destination this year is the Kirwee Domain and Recreation grounds. Entry fee still only $10 per car, with all proceeds going to Van Asch Deaf Education Centre. Note that the event will be run wet or fine. Any enquiries please call Colin Hey on 03 3598737 evenings after 7.30pm.

Full details and entry form please contact the secretary. Full document attached to emailed newsletter.
