SCVCC Chairman’s Report for May 2020

5

Hi Everyone I hope you are all surviving the lockdown and not getting under your partners feet. Most of us are very fortunate to have workshops in which we can “tinker” and catch up one those “one day “ projects. I certainly have . TV programmes such as The Tipping Point, Cash Trapped, and The Chase certainly are good entertainment & give us a chance to broaden our general knowledge ready for the next quiz night with Ashburton ! I have completed 3 Jigsaws so far with heaps more to do ,I’m happy to drop one off in Timaru on one of my bike rides If anyone feels the need. Also ,I have heaps of good novels & who “done it” books If you are desperate for things to read other than car books. As you can gather it is not possible to produce the Tri Car this month because of the restrictions. Obviously the scheduled events are canned for now including the May N&N .and June AGM which will be held at a later date. Nola has the accounts ready to go to the Auditor and the next Calendar of Events has been put together by the Committee just prior to the lockdown The Committee will keep you all informed by email as soon as there are any updates. For those without email ,it may be the time to drag you into the 21 st Century, An “I Pad” would be an easy place to start as they can do almost everything a computer can , touch screen operation and they take wonderful photo’s as well. I’ve had mine nearly 5 years and have an optional key board with it . Have used it all over the world , easy peasy. With internet banking fast becoming the norm now’s the time to get with it. Perhaps you would like to contribute to the next Tri Car with photo’s or news o what you got up to during the lockdown. Just forward them to Shona Weir. tricar.scvcc@gmail.com Look forward to catching up soon Ashley Milliken Chairman

British Columbia Truck Museum

by Barry Barnes 6 While touring the lower mainland of British Columbia in our old Dodge camper after returning from Vancouver Island, we happened upon this Museum on our way to Golden Ears Provincial Park. It was closed but there was to be an open day the next day (Saturday) so we came back for a look even though it was a back track, and as it happened not as easy to find again. There are times to trust your GPS and times to ignore it. I should have done the former on this occasion! It was all worth it however, and if anyone is ever in the vicinity of Cloverdale, a little east of Vancouver, a visit is recommended. Exhibits ranged quite widely. A newly acquired 1913 White Steamer C Cab van was the oldest, quite lightly built compared with other Whites I have seen. The body was obviously built from scratch and was a poor effort in terms of proportions and finish. The wheels and hubs were T Ford and who knows what else was original White, but an interesting vehicle all the same. Next oldest was a 1918 FWD quad, a 4 wheel drive 1st World War machine. There were a number of vintage era trucks and the selection ranged to mid 50s. Some were nicely restored while others were not so flash. Each exhibit had interesting information placards and a great array of photos and memorabilia around the walls too, made for an absorbing visit.

an absorbing visit. Of special interest was the Dodge tanker, to my untutored eye, somewhat similar to the prize exhibit in Transport World. Restoration is yet to be completed on this one. I mentioned Transport World to the volunteer on duty who had never heard of it but was very interested so I suggested they do a google search.

Notes from the Library

11

by Barry Barnes

Last month I was saying how things are changing around us at the moment. My predictions were well short of the mark but congratulations to everyone for hanging in there with the lockdown so we are all in a position to see the possibility of future activity ahead.\ In the meantime the Library remains closed though I did spend a little time down there on the first day of level 3 just a small deviation from some essential travel. I largely wanted to get the slide copying equipment but while there started to reorganize the magazines so they are stored vertically rather than in piles. This hasn’t taken as long as I feared and hope that it will make it easier for users. During the month I received my personal copy of Pioneer Motoring in Southland by Alan Meredith, a self published treatise following years of meticulous research. To say I am impressed would be an understatement and this volume could reasonably be seen as the authoritative work on the subject. It has South Canterbury links with reference to Simon McKenzie, a South Canterbury runholder who already owned 3 Darracq cars and imported in 1908, an 80hp Darracq billed as the record breaker. It proved onerous to start so it ended up being sold in 1910 to Tom Stone for use on the Service car run to Manapouri. This business further on became the Waimate Garage later taking on an agency for Ford, then in an arrangement with Adams Ltd of Christchurch also taking on EM,F Flanders, Studebaker, Talbot, Humber Swift etc. There were clearly some nice old cars around Waimate and Southland in those days as evinced by the many period photos in the book! I would strongly recommend this book to those interested in veteran motoring and could provide contact details for Alan to those interested in purchasing a copy. As a final note, Colin Johnstone has been in touch about the tractor manuals etc, to say the Geraldine Vintage Machinery Museum would like them, so that will clear them from the Library, and provide a good home.

10 International Veteran and Vintage Car Rally Barry Barnes

In the latest Beaded Wheels sent out by email (did you get your copy?), I had an article on the 1970 Australian Bi-Centenary International Rally for Veteran and Vintage Cars and Motorcycles, which ran from 4th to 18th April 1970 and travelled from Sydney to Melbourne. This was written from the perspective of the Southland Branch member I was in those days. Around 50 years ago, the South Canterbrians were arriving home, though they would undoubtedly be spread out as people did their own thing after completion of the event including at least one case, like myself, carrying on to Adelaide on a tour from 19-26 April. South Canterbury vehicles entered were: 1910 Regal, Bill and Shirley Piddington 1911Ford, T Russell Cross and his Mum Rona Wilson 1913 Fiat, Terry and Earlene Wilson 1921 ABC motorcycle Alan Brehaut 1927 Willys-Knight, Betty Lorimer–Allan 1928 Chrysler 75, Mick and Monica Small 1930 Essex, Fred Whiteley 1930 Rolls-Royce, Jim and Dymphna Sullivan Three of these vehicles, the Fiat, the Willys-Knight and the Chrysler all had photos featuring in the programme as did Clive Merry’s 1928 Buick then owned by Joe Tidswell.

Club Newsletters for the preceding 12months carried news of vehicles in various stages of stripdown and preparation or initial rebuild. Russell Cross was building a new body with mother-in-law seat for the Model T, which was out in December for a run to Waimate, while Terry Wilson reassembled the Fiat in time to take part in the New Years Day Parade at Fairlie. Mick Small had a new hood and curtains fitted to the Chrysler and had paintwork woes after the 1969 Mt Cook Rally which featured gale force winds of up to 126mph which believe me is really blowing! (My BSA survived relatively unscathed). Bill Piddington had also had the Regal in bits. Alan Brehaut, then Newsletter Editor, reported in March he was still frantically working to complete the ABC which was just a few days before shipping was due. All made it and completed the run with a few vicissitudes mostly minor. Alan though dropped a valve in the ABC damaging the piston, remedied by welding the piston and fitting a new valve. My own recollections included hearing of Jim Sullivan being accosted in Kings Cross by a lady of the night. Dymphna was only a few feet away, too! I was travelling out to Seven Hills on the train with Monica Small and Nancy McRae from Invercargill and their respective husbands and we guys got off. The doors started to close and Nancy froze. Monica gave her a mighty heave and they both got out just in time! During the Rally there were frequent Lunch Stop Displays and at one I found Monica convulsed with laughter. She had bought a realistic looking plastic dog turd which she planted on Nancy’s seat in the 12/50 Alvis and Nancy nearly had hysterics when she saw it! When travelling from Echuca to Bendigo, I spied an apparition coming towards me that looked like a motoring umbrella. It turned out to be the ABC. Alan Brehaut had acquired what I think was an antique light fitting cum chandelier which he had strapped down his jacket with the shade hanging over his head! He was making for the nearest place he could freight it home. At one of the early social events Alan, had purchased a jug of beer. The barman saw him still standing there and said” Something else mate?” “Yes” said Alan “I gave you a dollar and I’m waiting for my change.” “Hell mate, you’re not in New Zealand now, it’s a dollar a jug and that’s a special deal for you lot!”

After the Melbourne final dinner he asked if we could drop him to his accommodation so we all piled into our beaten up 1960 FB Holden Hi-Top van only for a pin to drop out of the fairly Heath Robinson floor change conversion that the van boasted, leaving us with second gear only, so it was 2nd gear out to Alan’s place. then back again and way out Lygon Street to our campground digs. It was a quick job to put in a replacement bolt the next morning. A number of entrants, upon going to collect their vehicles which had come back aboard the roll on rolloff ship Maheno, were aghast to find them in less than pristine condition. The ABC displayed aluminium corrosion and rust, the Rolls was covered in salt crystals and had rust coming out everywhere. On the way home the ignition packed up due to corrosion and the bonnet hinge had seized up with rust. Fred Whitely also had salt and corrosion issues with the Essex which I believe in the end resulted in a major strip down to put it right. Sadly, many of those who took part are no longer with us and only one of the vehicles to my knowledge (the Chrysler now owned by Bruce Washington) remains in South Canterbury. Such is the way of things after 50 years.

Hi VCC committee members

21

I am writing to tell you about our quiet country motel in Greymouth that would make an ideal base for visiting vintage car club members once the country resumes normal life. What makes our small motel ideal for VCC members is: · Vehicles are not visible from the road and protected by a driveway sensor. · We have an outdoor kitchen that lets us provide a chargrilled, or offset smoked, bbq evening meal in a group setting. · We are currently building a wood-fired hot tub in a bush setting which will be completed once the country returns to normality. · We offer a 20% room discount to those VCC members that book directly through our website. Our motel, Goldfield Suites, is next door to Shantytown, making us extremely easy to find due to the signage advising tourists how to get there. We are set back from the road in a bush setting, ensuring guests have a tranquil environment and a great night’s sleep. We have four large one-bedroom queen suites, and one queen studio. Each unit features: · a self-contained kitchenette with a Nespresso machine · a supremely comfortable queen bed, with beside device charging · a 40-inch android TV · awesome WiFi, · and the suites also have a private deck with a café setting to enjoy the Nespresso. Trip Advisor rate us as 5* and Booking.com as “Exceptional” (9.4 overall). We are both keen motor sports fans and always enjoy talking to the drivers/riders about their vehicles. We hope this strikes a chord with your members and we look forward to hosting you when you are next in Greymouth. Regards Andy and Jolene 03 762-6035 www.goldfieldsuites.co.nz Facebook
