Club night 2nd Wednesday of month 7.30pm at Clubrooms supper provided. Clubrooms, library & Spares DEPARTMENT OPEN Tuesday morning 9-11am. Morning Tea available. 5

What a month! What a last weekend we have had! In reality, let’s hope Art Deco does not get any bigger! First up let me say a big thanks to all those club members out there that joined in and participated in what can only be described as a fantastic five days. Yes it all started on the Wednesday with the STB group assembling at the home of our sponsor, Euro City, where an unexpected morning tea was laid on. Staff and members of the public rocked on in and had a preview of some serious old metal assembled on the yard. Off they went from here on their travels before gathering with many of us for dinner at the clubrooms. Again it was good to see many members come along and enjoy the company and host a great group of car enthusiast’s. They all enjoyed a great meal (I have to say that though!) and the feedback was all positive. Thursday the STB headed off on a run, taking in Havelock North for a display and lunch at “Off the Track” before more running around and then, dinner in Ahuriri. Friday, for many was the real kick-off for Art Deco as we gathered at the Clubrooms to start the Rally, switched to Friday as a trial to ease the pressure of the Saturday morning. Despite the registered numbers being high, we watched with interest how many did actually turn up, as previous years have produced small numbers, and behold, what must rate as our biggest every rally for many years saw some 105 cars assembled. Bloody hell! After the formalities, they were all sent off for a great country run to the destinations of Matipiro Station for a picnic lunch under the trees in a wonderful garden setting. Perhaps one of the highlights of the stop was the “firing of the cannon”!! That got everyone up in their seats! March 2018

Back into town and our revamped Friday night kicked in at 5.00pm (a bit of an experiment) and despite being sold out (150 tickets) it was a tad disappointing to have a number of no-show’s. But never mind the show went on, and the Elegant Ladies Fashion Show attracted a record 13 entries (including one from the sponsor!) With a finish time of 8.00pm it gave people time to enjoy some of the sights around the soundshell and still be home relatively early. Into Saturday, what a hell of a day!! A relaxed start for morning tea at the club, no rally to race off to, just head to town for the Parade at a leisurely pace. The Parade! What can you say? 300 fabulous cars, thousands of people and damn HOT. A tremendous event, followed by a successful few hours of Car Rides (still damn hot!) and then we split off on our merry ways for the evening at all corners of the city (or home for a rest if you were smart!) Sunday dawned clear, despite the bloodshot eyes, and off we went again to the club for a hearty breakfast, more convivial conversation and company and some great entertainment. An excellent turnout of members and visitor’s, and of course a world class selection of cars. Almost the end of a hectic five days, but no, off we go to town for another session of car rides to top up the coffers! Still very hot, I’m still recovering, so this report is nearly finished! A very big thank you to the effort put in by a very strong core of members, thanks to our sponsors and supporters, give yourselves a pat on the back and have a few days rest. Going forward, don’t forget our 50 year award luncheon on the 10th March, Club Night on the 14th with a special “Guest on the Couch” (bring a tipple or two if you wish) and the Run on the 18th. See you all there.

CLUB CAPTAIN// By Esther Smith

Art Deco is done and dusted for another year. It was a great success, many thanks must go to everyone who contributed to the organisation and day to day operations of the event, it just couldn’t have been the awesome weekend it was without your assistance. I think the weather gods should get a mention here as well, they certainly looked after us this year, the sunshine and clear sky’s made an amazing backdrop to the most important stars of all the cars. I was lucky enough to have a drive of Neville and Chris Digby’s 1904 Baker Electric car which they had brought up from Christchurch. Neville came to me at the car rides and offered to give a few rides for us in the car, when I said I wouldn’t mind having a ride, his reply was “well you can have a drive if you want” .So after some basic instruction off we went weaving our way down the new Marine Parade layout, extremely nerve racking. I had to go twice around the roundabout because I was concentrating so much I missed the exit. The car makes no sound, but does have a push button horn, so I was also having to look out for people just stepping out in front of me, think about controlling the tiller, the speed I was going, the brake, and unsuspecting photographers stepping back into my road etc. However it was an amazing experience. Neville’s generosity epitomised the friendliness and attitude of many those who were here with their Simply the Best cars, they loved the event and what we had planned for them, they were generous with their praise and time, where else could you have had a ride in Marlene Dietrich’s car from the Southwood Museum but at the car rides on Saturday. Just fabulous. So for other club happenings:

The 50 year awards lunch Sat 10th March, refer to the ad later in the mag, get your names to me for catering purposes please and encourage other members to come along. HOOTERS// Ana @ Hooters Hi Folks, ‘Wow’ another Art Deco Festival has been and gone. The weather really pulled it out of the bag, a little too hot for some perhaps. Melting springs to mind! Hope you have all recovered from what we fondly call the ‘Art Deco Hangover’. The City certainly comes alive for this event and the car envy begins earlier and earlier each year. This year it was definitely the 1938 Alfa 6C 2300B, a very deserving win for VCC popular choice! Even if David did forget to post the Hooters votes, that were all for the Alfa! Talking of David, he was off on a jolly from Wednesday onwards, driving the 1934 Gangloff Bugatti with the top 30 cars visiting schools, museums and of course sheds! Monte was in the 1938 Lagonda and quite hesitantly returned it safe and sound on Sunday afternoon.

The VCC donation rides are always great fun and a great opportunity for the public to get a taste of vintage cars and for many, the start of the love affair. The ‘behind the scenes’ team deserve a pat on the back, congratulations you’ve done it again! Well done to all those involved, it’s hugely appreciated and a huge THANK YOU from me and the team! Deco may have ended on Sunday but Monday & Tuesday saw 3 cruise ships in two days and all those that had attended the weekend were a little jaded to say the least. By now it’s Wednesday evening and I’m late with the article, hope we still make it. We can all be proud we survived another Art Deco. Tally Ho, Pip Pip, let’s do it all again next year! Well that’s it for another month, be seeing you…

Somehow David, Tracy & Monte also got roped in to be the judges for Friday night. I hear there are calls for Bertie & Leanne to return next year :-) The highlight, as always, was the Parade although this year it did feel that it all happened a little too quickly. It seemed to be over much quicker than previous years and as a spectator, for a change, I felt like it ended far too quickly.

MESSAGES TO CLUB MEMBERS// Thank You from Barrie Browne During the recent Art Deco functions I was on point duty for the Wednesday visit to the Nelson Park School. While the cars entered the park gates I noticed one Alfa Romeo with a front light dangling below the front bumper. The driver was made aware of this and tougher we removed the light and the broken bracket. Now I don’t have any welding experience or any gear to fix a broken metal bracket, so where do we go to get this mended, A&M Panel Repairs in Thames St is the answer. Boldly I front up and ask if the old bloke, Bruce, can do a spot of welding which of course, as always obliges, not only welding it back together but also grinding and buffing smooth and then calling the painter to apply some primer and three coats of black paint. The lamp then was given back to Gary the owner who was surprised and very grateful for the work done. Therefore it is right and proper that this club recognise Bruce, Tim and the team at A&M Panel Repairs for answering the call when most needed, thank you.
