CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
Welcome to all you readers out there, and I suspect there are many of you that read the enlightening comments and thoughts that go into these reports not only from myself but the Club Captain and the various authors of the Run Reports. So I will endeavour to maintain the high standard we have set!! November was another busy month for the committee as we set about the various tasks we all have in trying to ensure that we all have a club well into the future, through not only maintaining the physical club rooms & activities programme, but trying to grow the membership with people with less grey hair than most of us have. Like it or not, this growth is becoming more important than we may like to admit, and if you read some of the articles in various Motoring magazines, it can paint a worrying picture for the ongoing enjoyment we get from owning and driving our Historical Vehicles. It is therefore vital that we all not only welcome younger new members but make sure that we embrace what they have to offer. We have to accept that the next generation of members will not be driving 1920-1960 cars, but will in fact be in later model vehicles, that are club eligible (Art Deco aside). That is where the future of these clubs will sit -or sadly disappear. The real push / start of this was Malcolm Blair inviting a couple of “families” along to the Homestead Run, who are involved as a group driving “classic cars” and almost looking for a home. This is the target market and speaking to them I believe they enjoyed the run. Let’s hope we did enough to encourage them to come back! December 2018
We were fortunate enough to get a guest speaker at the Club Night (after the advertised guest was a late withdrawal) in ex Serious Crash Investigator / Policeman in Iain Cheyne, who gave us an excellent insight into his previous life dealing with the horrific crashes and there consequences. Many thanks to Iain. Our annual Homestead Run, combined with Central Hawke’s Bay, proved a success. Assembling at the Zinc Café, Waipukurau (the VCC must be their best customer by now!) some 62 cars headed off. (Yes some like me just made the start due to commitments with the All Black V Ireland broadcast) We were dispatched on a picturesque run through the countryside to a lovely garden setting next to the homestead for a leisurely lunch. – I am bemused though? After all the effort of setting up tables & chairs & eating lunch, listening to a brief talk on the properties history, many seem to embark on a “sprint” to see how quickly they can repack the car and exit the venue! I’m not sure what has happened to the old saying “stop and smell the roses” (and there were plenty to smell) as the exit was almost completed by 2pm!! A little disappointing particularly as the property owners were walking amongst the crowd looking to engage in conversation! Just maybe, we should stop and smell the roses! Just a thought. Going forward, December’s calendar looks busy, and that’s before you get to the everyday stuff, so I hope you all get to attend the Club Night (auction night) on the 12th and the last run of the year on the 16th. If I don’t see you, all the best for Christmas and the new year, drive safely and be kind to one and other!
CLUB CAPTAIN// By Esther Smith
Well summer was nearly here until it decided to rain cats and dogs. At least we got some good motoring events in earlier in the month. The mid-week run was a success, organised by Bob Ackerley they headed up Matapiro way, the enjoyment those attending got from rolling the tyres down the hill on Tony Connors farm shows that we are still just big kids at heart. For the homestead run this year, we joined up with the CHB branch, so great to catch up with members of that branch. It was beautiful weather, some of us stopped off at the Otane Sunday Market to pick up supplies then we headed off to Waipukurau and our meeting place at the Zinc Café. On Sunday the 16th December Steve and Pam D. are organising our Christmas picnic run. As the picnic lunch is supplied by the club, we need numbers for catering, so get your names to Steve now. Full details are elsewhere in the Mag

Steve is again coming up trumps as on Sunday the 13th of January 2019, he is organising a run down Dannevirke way, with some interesting places to visit. It will be a long day but well worth it. Full details are elsewhere in the Mag

CHRISTMAS OUTING Sunday December 16th ONCE AGAIN WE ARE HAVING A CHRISTMAS RUN INTO THE COUNTRY. SAME FORMAT AS LAST YEAR. NOTE THIS IS A DIFFERENT VENUE. Starting from the Club rooms at 10.30am There will be a short run to the venue Your Branch will be supplying Lunch. (Subway followed by Strawberry & Ice Cream). NEW YEAR OUTING 2019 Sunday January 13th 2019 Meet at Roosters Brewery on Omahu Road Hastings. Starting at 9.30am We will be travelling to Dannervike for a picnic Lunch. Then visiting two collections. This is the third group I have organised to these venues and everybody has been very impressed. HOMESTEAD RUN 2018//
» Trish Anstis with Club Captain Esther Smith holding the money donated to the Helicopter Rescue. On Sunday 18th November 62 cars assembled at the Zinc Café in Waipukurau. This was a combined number of members from CHB & HB VCC organised by Rod & Scarlett McKenzie CHB & Esther & Graham Smith.
Steve & Trish have transformed the lovely gardens & lawns around the homestead which provided a great area for VCC members to have their lunch. Steve & Trish were happy to wander around and engage in conversation with everyone.
Setting off from Zinc Café the day was perfect for a drive out into the countryside, arriving at the property called Waikareao Station owned by Steve & Trish Antstis.
To have the privilege to spend the day with them on their property a donation of $10 per car was collected, resulting in a grand total of $623 to be given to the RESCUE HELICOPTER TRUST. A wonderful organisation to be able donate too!
Originally the property was built for a Mr Johnstone who they say never returned from WW1, so it was farmed as an estate well into the 1970’s.

HBVCC CLUB & AUCTION NIGHT// A Special General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 12th December 2017 at the Clubrooms, preceding the Club Meeting & Auction Night, for the purpose as per the Motion tabled below.
AUCTION NIGHT 12TH DECEMBER Members come along to the clubs auction night and have a bit of fun by bidding on a parcel or parcels that looks interesting. You never know what you may get! First thing you have to do is to wrap up a gift in Christmas paper and bring it along on the night. Tables will be set up ready to go for all those wonderful items to auction off. Second thing you have to bring with you is cash in your wallet/purse or your pocket so you have plenty to bid with!!! BYO drinks (may help with bidding!)

HOOTERS// Ana @ Hooters
Hi Folks, It’s been an action packed month in the Hooters camp with cruise ships, weddings, conferences and city & winery tours. It seems the secret is out and everyone is heading to Hawke’s Bay! Monte the vintage bus is back doing daily tours from the Napier I-site and enjoying showcasing our fantastic city in true Art Deco Style. David is out of the moonboot and very happy to be back driving again. For now it’s just the modern automatic but at least he’s back on the road and certainly on the mend. The cruise ship season is well and truly upon us and we have already had some great weather, a few rainy days too but rain or shine we’ll always make sure our guests have a fantastic time. Although it really does help when we turn on the sunshine and the open tops can come out to play. Talking of open tops, David’s been at it again and we would like to introduce you to ‘KC’ the 1926 Essex. Here’s a couple of pics of the latest addition:
Steve has been working hard giving her a full check up and converting her to 12 Volt. This does mean the Studebaker has once again been pushed to the back of the shed and onto a very long list. Work is due to start on ‘Annie’ soon, our 5th Hupmobile. She needs a whole lot of love. So with all these projects on the go the new shed is most definitely filling up fast. Thanks again for the deco donations, the costume department is looking great and will soon be ready to open to the public. We are getting on with the finishing touches left to do to the building but it’s certainly looking fantastic and the feedback from our visitors so far has been great. If you haven’t already popped by then please do pop in and have a look. Well that’s it for another month, be seeing you…

Now working with young children could be challenging at times. I needed to tie up the boysenberry vines, they are too prickley for young kids. So I set them up with a wheelbarrow full of water and added their bath toys. I was working just a few rows from the house fence within ear shot of the kids. I got so intent on tying up the vines that I never saw the salesman walk up the row behind me. When he spoke right behind me I got a huge fright, which immediately made me grumpy. I can't remember what he was selling but I snapped that I was not interested. He then stammered that the children were playing with water, yes I know I snapped. He then stammered that he had turned off the tap. I snapped thank you and he left. After awhile I thought about what he had said “turned the tap off � I hadn't left one on,so I went to check on the kids. Well they had put the plug in the kitchen sink and completely flooded the kitchen. As we had quite a high lip at the back door the water had gone into the laundry next door and had travelled up the hall carpet and into the dining room. In the middle of the kitchen was the 4 year old trying to mop up the water with the dish cloth. As I was cleaning up the flood I felt quite bad about being so rude to the salesman as he must have got his shoes and socks quite wet when he went in and turned off the tap, and have often wondered what he thought. One day I needed to go to the shop, the December 2018
nearest was about 2km away at Whakatu. I only had 2 choices the Studebaker or the Thornycroft I choose the Studebaker as I thought it would be the quickest. Now I hadn't driven either of them but thought how hard can it be. The Stude started easily and down the drive I went onto the road but when I tried to change it from 1st to 2nd gear it just would not oblige all I got was a loud grunching noise. I pulled over put it in 1st and tried again a few times with no luck, so I thought what to do, I really needed to get to the shop. So only one thing for it 1st gear will have to do, so after a rather slow trip I was relieved to be back home with the smokes and to get rid of the loud revving noise out of my ears. Doug told me that night that had I put it in 2nd it would have taken off just fine. As the trees were slowly growing so was the number of animals we got 2 goats, lots of hens, pigs, cats, dog and 2 guinea pigs. Dougs sister kindly gave us 2 more guinea pigs which were lovely colours she was pretty sure they were the same sex as our 2. It was not long before we had so many guinea pigs that they wouldn't fit in the cage. I use to find them in the kids beds, in the draws with their clothes and did my best to teach them that they should live outside. The numbers kept growing so Doug put bins in the orchard for them to hide under. It is not so long ago that a club member told me what he remembered most about Thornycroft Orchard was the sea of guinea pigs nibbling grass in the early evening.

We looked after Doug's brothers pet talking magpie for awhile we had it in a large cage in the carport. But the childrens favourite was Mickey the possum, when they ran it would always catch them. Mickey got banned from inside the house when he insisted in running up the curtains jumping onto the standard lamp and riding it down to the carpet. One day Mickey got me into big trouble my Mother had come to visit, I not sure which child let him out to play but he took one look at the back of my Mothers bare legs and up he went onto the top of head. I still have a mental picture today of Mickey proudly sitting on her head and her yelling get this thing off me.
dog. He lay in wait and sure enough he saw the dog coming up the driveway, so he fired a shot above its head. Well he had forgotten about the magpie in the cage right next to him, the poor bird started squawking crazily when he fired the shot which in turn gave Doug a big shock and up went the gun in the air firing multiple shots. I went out to see what was happening I thought world war 3 had started. I'm not sure who got the biggest fright the magpie, Doug, the dog or me, but we never saw the dog again. We use to fed the cats at the back door before we went to bed, but we had been having trouble with a stray dog that would come and steal the cats food. So one night unbeknown to me Doug hid in the carport with his automatic gun to frighten off this 19

THE SATNAV// I have a little Satnav, It sits there in my car A Satnav is a driver's friend, it tells you where you are. I have a little Satnav, I've had it all my life It's better than the normal ones, My Satnav is my wife. It gives me full instructions, Especially how to drive "It's sixty miles an hour", it says, "You're doing sixty five". It tells me when to stop and start, And when to use the brake And tells me that it's never ever, Safe to overtake. It tells me when a light is red, And when it goes to green It seems to know instinctively, Just when to intervene.
A poem by Pam Ayres It lists the vehicles just in front, And all those to the rear And taking this into account, It specifies my gear. I'm sure no other driver, Has so helpful a device For when we leave and lock the car, It still gives its advice. It fills me up with counselling, Each journey's pretty fraught So why don't I exchange it, And get a quieter sort? Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, Makes sure I'm properly fed It washes all my shirts and things, And keeps me warm in bed! Despite all these advantages, And my tendency to scoff, I only wish that now and then, I could turn the bugger off. 21
