From your Chairman: From Your Chairman: As you know the AGM is this month, Thursday 25th May. All positions are open for nomination, so now is a chance for you to get on the Committee and help run your club. If you are not keen on a Committee position, come along and tell us what you want out of your Vintage Car Club. We have had suggestions like, a Bingo afternoon, Members with stories to tell, or a digital presentation of interesting events or subjects, visiting speakers, movie nights with pot luck dinner. Why don’t you come to the AGM and put your thoughts forward to the Meeting, could be your idea is just what is needed to kick start some more interest in your club. As I said before all positions are open for nomination, but the Secretary and Club Captain positions must be filled or it will be difficult to operate as a Branch of the Vintage Car Club of NZ. Les Events Report: Club Run to Lake Tarawera Outlet & Falls on Sunday 2nd April 8 cars took part in the run with 17 Members and friends and we know George was there somewhere, he had apparently gone on ahead, which would have made 9 cars, but we didn’t see him. It was a great day out with lunch at Lake Tarawera outlet under the Clubs new Gazebo, then on to view the Tarawera Falls. Thanks to those that came, it makes organising these events worthwhile. After the Edgecumbe Flood a call came out to help Jim Richardson clean and sort out his workshop and sheds. 8 Members responded but unfortunately we couldn’t do what we planned because the water around the sheds was still ankle deep. We will have another shot at it if Jim would like us to. Club Run Saturday 29th April Report in next issue of the Running Board. Coming Events: May Sunday Sunday

From the Editor’s Desk Recently we had a departure from cars and went on the Awakeri Rail Adventures trip. It travels along a piece of unused railway in rail carts. What a lovely morning we had. The weather was superb, not a breath of wind and the sun was shining – just one of those days when you think it is so good to be in our beautiful country. We 4

stopped to look at an old station, then another stop to feed about 300 odd geese, ducks and chooks and then another stop to go on the White Pine bush walk. One of the pines in there was over 600 years old or rather to put it into perspective - about the time Oliver Cromwell was ruling England. The last stop was for refreshments before turning the carts around and heading back to the station. What an enjoyable experience and one which I very much recommend. This month, two of our members, Barry and Tessa Keane attended the North Island Easter Rally in Auckland and Barry has provided a report with photos. Many thanks Barry for your efforts and the great photos.. You were lucky to get through with all the bad weather we had. And it is that time if year again when we have the Cub AGM. The notice is included in this issue plus a nomination form if you would like to nominate someone for either the committee or any other position. They are all up for grabs so if you have a hankering to be on there, please have someone nominate you for a position. I am hoping that one of the members who went on the last run on 29th April could forward me a bit of a report on it. Unfortunately, we didn’t get there in time as John was working until 2 PM. I was sent some photos; however a wee bit of information on the run, where it was and anything else of interest would be appreciated. Margaret

An IRD inspector stops at a farm in the King Country and talks with an old farmer. He tells him, "I need to inspect your farm as part of your tax audit." The farmer says, "OK, but don't go in that field over there," as he points out the location. The IRD Inspector verbally explodes saying, "Mister, I have the authority of National Government with me." Reaching into his pocket, he removes his badge and pushes it into the farmer’s face. "See this badge? This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish. Anywhere! On any property! No questions asked or answers given. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand?" The farmer nods politely, apologizes, and goes about his duties. A short time later, the old farmer hears loud screams and sees the IRD inspector running for his life chased by the farmer’s big champion bull. With every step, the bull is gaining ground on the inspector, and it seems likely that he'll get gored before he reaches safety. The inspector is terrified. The farmer throws down his tools, runs to the fence and yells at the top of his lungs, "Your badge! Show him your BADGE!"

VEHICLE INFORMATION This information is in Beaded Wheels but just in case you didn’t see it, here it is. Vehicle ID – Members who wish to apply for Vehicle Identification Certification (VIC) are asked to contact one of our Branch Vehicle ID Officers. Their names and contact details are provided in each Running Board magazine on Page 2. If you wish to participate in any National VCC event, you do need to have a VIC. Please don’t leave it until the last minute as it takes some time for the processing of the paperwork. U: - must be accompanied by the appropriate form which can be downloaded from the VCC NZ website or contact the club secretary. The form should then be sent to your branch secretary for processing. Selling your Vehicle: - if you vehicle has a VIC Certification and you sell your vintage vehicle, please notify NZVCC, P O Box 2546, Christchurch. Ph 3 366 4461, Fax 03 366 0273 or email admin@vcc.org.nz Insuring your vehicle: - when you insure your vehicle through VERO, you are helping our Club financially. Just let them know that you are e member of the Eastern BOP VCC and quote this number: 300132 NB: - Also if you have recently transferred to this branch from another branch and you have VERO insurance. You will need to contact them to advise that you have transferred otherwise your previous branch will continue 6

to receive the commission instead of our branch. At the March meeting of the members we were advised that on member discovered that their previous branch had been receiving commission for the past 13 years. When you transfer, Head Office does not advise VERO of this fact, the onus is on the insured to do so.

OUT AND ABOUT

The North Island Easter Rally This year it was held in Auckland. The last time that it was held here was in 1983. The plotters had arranged for the rally to go through the Regional Council land in the Hunua ranges and Auckland water catchment areas but cylcone Debbie put a stop to that. A new route had to be quickly sorted out but they managed to keep the start points and lunch stops the same. The Gymkana venue was too wet so it was shifted to a side road and held on the Saturday. Despite the weather it was well run and enjoyable. Tessa and I left in the MG on Friday morning after spending a couple of hours cleaning up two and a half trees that had blown over. Matata was closed so we went via Rotorua.

On Saturday morning we met at Drury at 9.00am for the Rally briefing. The cars then left from 9.30am at half minute intervals. There were 61 entries with about half being from Clubs outside of Auckland. The rally rules were as in the NZVCC manual (section 20) which are slightly different to what many clubs actually do in practice. One is when the instructions say 'turn right' or 'turn left' it means a 90 degree turn, so it is ignored if it is say 110 or 75 degrees, and this caught out most entrants. If 'turn' is left out of the instruction then you take the left or right accordingly. Another was where a service lane had a street sign 'Tui Lane' and we were meant to go down it but 90% of entrants did not. The 'straight ahead rule' applied all day and in the afternoon section many had forgotten about it and so lost points. There were no questions in this Rally. The Plotters and the Rally Committee did a very good job and are to be congratulated especially under the circumstances that they ended up having to work under. The NZVCC penalties are: 

Timing - 1 point per minute 8



Silent Checks - 30 points



Manned Checks - 50 points

Questions are mentioned in the Rally Rules but did not have specific points allocated to them.

The weather was okay and the route was quite scenic and went through the Ararimu, Paparimu, Clevedon, Kaiaua and Waharau areas. Sunday was a scenic tour through Whitford and towards Clevedon to a collection a Bentleys, Rolls Royces, Lagondas, Bristols, a Jaguar and even an MG. The oldest were from the 1920s and the newest was only 3 weeks old. There were over 30 cars and all were warranted and registered and in pristine condition and stored in a huge U shaped garage with I think had 28 roller doors so each car could drive out without having to move others.

A most impressive display.

CLUB RUN TO LAKE TARAWERA OUTLET AND FALLS We were to meet at the Information Centre at Kawerau to get our forest permits for the run to the outlet and falls, of course we who live the closest were the last there. We saw the Red Model A Coupe and said to Phil, ‘did you come with John’ to which he replied, ‘same horse, different jockey’, so as you might have guessed Phil and Margaret have bought John’s Model A, good on them, we hope they have a lot of fun in it. It was good to see new member Ian Wilson in his 1960 Hillman Minx on his first club run and of course all of the other members and friends who joined in on the run. Once off the tar sealed road and on to the metal, it was a little dusty, but we kept our distance and there wasn’t much other traffic, so it was quite a nice drive to the lake. Cars lined up at Tarawera

We found a good spot to park the cars and wandered down to the lake, some said the water was quite warm, but no one ventured in for a swim. Soon we got hungry, so up went the gazebo and we had lunch and then we were entertained by Sharon who found a rope swing to practice her moves on. Sharon on the swing Lunch under the gazebo

After a wander over the bridge over the outlet we headed off to the falls. Ian volunteered to stay at the car park to keep an eye on the cars while the rest of us trekked to the falls, what a great sight with more water coming over than usual and creating a large amount of spray. Some members got a little damp by getting a bit close, but it was all great fun. After a chat, and a cuppa for some back at the car park, time was marching on, so we headed back to Kawerau and home. Les

Same Horse – Different Jockey Refer to Les’s comment in the Club run to the Tarawera outlet above)
