Chairmans Notes Greetings All Sunday morning 7am peace and quiet. All 5 grandchildren have been returned to their rightfull owners. It worked out well as we had to attend the Manawatu Swapmeet in Fielding on Saturday so Sarah picked up her three there and Jamie picked up his two. An enjoyable morning at the Swapmeet, Nowadays mainly catch up time with like minded friends. Overall quality of parts for sale was okay. Definitely a lack of commercial vendors at some swapmeets nowadays also a noticeable increase of plastic and household stuff. Like the pubs with drink driving, Trade Me has definitely killed off quality stuff at swapmeets so enjoy them while they last.September Sunday run saw an excellent turnout of members, cars and motorcycles assemble at the Square in Feilding. (See story elsewhere in mag) Club vehicles over the last couple of months have been requested for various openings and functions. Thanks to the members who have assembled here. October club night, I had invited Tony Hancock back to bring us up to date re the 2021 Vero International Festival of Motoring to be held in New Plymouth. He spoke about each days’ events, entertainment, approx mileages and expected costs. This should be a great week of meeting people, viewing cars and covering some of the best rally roads you will find in New Zealand. Now only 14 months away you should be booking your accommodation and saving for this event. This will be the best chance local members (and cheapest) will have to attend an international rally and probably the last as discussed at the meeting, so I urge you to attend. You won’t regret it. Early this month the North Cape to Bluff Tour stopped at Whanganui for a couple of days. Some have been on the road for 10 days so far. A visit to the Club parts shed on the Thursday evening and dinner in the Club Room, Thanks Alie and family, followed by a tour through my place and Ed’s on the Friday. Paul Collins, North Island Club Captain, has organised the tour, 26 days in total, but you can join and exit as you please. We have had a number of members spending time in various hospitals. Remember members are only a phone call away for help. On a happy note, I was pleased to “MC” Alan Bate’s birthday afternoon tea in the Club rooms. The Bates / Kendrick family had decorated the tables with car parts in the centres and the Club rooms looked like a 1930s era setting with clocks, radios, phonographs and lamps in the room. Congratulations Alan B. Well done!

On a sadder note we will all be aware of the passing of Ed Boyd but what a great send off. He would have been pleased with the speeches and the one thousand plus people and 60 cards parked on the forecourt. The service was conducted and well controlled by Craig Cleveland. I’ve been to a lot of services but this one was up there with the best, plus I related to all the real, as it was, stories. (See obituary by me in this mag.) That’s my lot

Cheers Bruce

Hi all, Peter here, a couple of items from your editor. Winner of last months competition was , “And How much am I bid for this fine pair

And the photo of Barry Cleaver receiving his 50 year membership award last month

In the mag you will see the entry form for the 2020 Burma Rally. Please try and use the online entry at bit.ly/wvccbr2020 its easy and saves a lot of work for our Rally Secretary And finally we have had an urgent call for rags, preferably cotton, for use in the spare parts shed, please bring them along to the monthly meeting and hand them to one of the spare parts crew

Taranaki VCC Rubber Duckie Rally 2019 The Taranaki VCC recently held their annual Rubber Duckie Vintage Motorcycle Rally. Heather and I took all our winter and wet weather riding gear and the Triumph Bonnie in the van and drove to Waitara on Friday 19 September and stayed with Colin Johnston ready for the rally on the next day. Saturday morning dawned a beautiful day with a clear blue sky, sunshine and a great view of Mount Egmont. The starting point was the Top Ten Holiday Park in Princes Street Fitzroy where 41 riders gathered. The first rider left at 9.30 am and our starting time was 9.38am. We rode out along Carrington Road and up under the mountain past the Pukeiti Rhododenron Trust and onto Okato for a lovely morning tea. Then on around the mountain to Normanby and the Tawhiti Museum for lunch, This part was timed and our average speed was 38 miles per hour. At the briefing we were told the first part of the run was over narriow roads with lots of corners and it would be imposssible to keep to this speed but that the second part had a lot of good long stretches where this lost time could be made up. There were also silent checks along the way. After lunch we had a fairly stright forward run back through Elthan, Stratford and Inglewood, turning off at Egmont Village to get back to Fitzroy and Rally Headquarters. The dinner and prize giving was held in the Beach Street Hall where a fabulous dinner was enjoyed by all. The results were: Post Vintage – Leo Fowler on a 1942 Indian 741B Post War – Michael Watts on a 1955 AJS 185 Post 60 - Heather and Bill James on a 1978 Triumph Bonneville Combination Class -J & J Williams on a Morgan Supersport Guest Class – Colin and Vicki Tate on a 1961 Norton Dominator Overall Winners – Heather and Bill James A special thanks to Heather for seeing and remembering all the silent checks. Happy riding, BJ

Why does a chicken coop have two doors?

I asked 100 women which shampoo they preferred.

Almost all of them replied, “How the hell Because if it had four doors, it would be a did you get in here?” chicken sedan. Where do Volkswagens go when they get old? The Old Volks home.

Why don’t foot fetishists ever win anything?

What do you call a used car salesman? A car-deal-ologist.

September Sunday Run Sunday Sept 5th, that month’s run was to Fielding. This was to be a make your own way drive, with a meeting in Manchester Sq. A cold but sunny day, so no fears of getting our 50 year old XJ6 wet. The aim of the run was to visit Mike and Brenda Marshall’s home and of course their shed/ workshops. We left the Square in a convoy of maybe 20 cars. This was fine, with a tour of what seemed to be the whole of North Feilding, It was after all a Sunday run. There were a few unaccounted stops but we did arrive at Mike’s in good time. Later we out that our leader had not quite sorted out where Mike lives. Now, where Mike lives he has this very large shed surrounded by bungalows, isn't NZ great, this could never happen in UK. Entering this shed we were greeted by Mike and Brenda and a cup of tea. Also the story how it all came about, with living in it while their house was built. We all did that at sometime, I recall. Having looked at all the cars , I spotted an Austin 16 which I also have, all be it in a knock down state with most of the parts in boxes. I was able to talk to the owner, one Neal Hekmont. This was a great opportunity to get some shots of an original car. This will help me, if ever, maybe to get mine back together. After sometime of looking at everything again and having a long talk to Mike about another Austin, this time an A90 Atlantic that he used to own and now is in Ed’s collection. God rest. The first time I had seen one of these was in Nairobi, circa 1951. I have my eye on it but so has Mike.... A really interesting day out with thanks to Mike and Brenda’s hospitality. After that, a wonderful run back home in what was the best car of its time. Thankyou Jaguar.... OK so it's got a few oil leaks. Jeff and Renate Williams.

Hi Everyone, Thanks to the very enthusiastic response from all VCC branches enroute for Targa 2019, I've created the attached schedule to give VCC members opportunity to attend lunch, afternoon & evening venues to view Targa cars & display their own VCC vehicles in conjunction with our Targa VCC Time Trial cars. We did this last year for Targa 2018 in the lower South Island, & it proved to be a most successful way of raising public awareness of the VCC, along with meeting new & younger potential members. For any VCC members unfamiliar with the Targa VCC Time Trial, it's not a race, but rather an exercise in precise driving, to maintain a set average speed through all closed stages, (similar to a regularity trial, but with the safety of knowing that all participants have staggered stage start times, drive in the same direction, on the same road, with nothing coming towards them). VCC members in VCC eligible cars with a VIC also enjoy a substantial entry fee discount, without having to modify their cars with roll cages etc. Please refer www.vcc.org.nz "National Events" & https://targa.nz/targanz/ "Targa VCC Time Trial Information" for further details. This year is also the 25th anniversary for Targa NZ, & following the success of last year's inaugural Targa VCC Time Trial, we're very fortunate to again have this opportunity to participate in Targa 2019. (There's also still time to enter, so please contact me directly if interested). Please forward this email along with the attached schedule to your branch members who we look forward to meeting during "Targa Week", Monday 28th October to Saturday 2nd November. Kind regards, Rod Corbett, Targa VCC Steward
