Chairman’s Report We have no Chairman’s Report for this month, it will be included in his report at the AGM. (Editor)

Working Bee 4 May 2019 The first of our Working Bee’s to begin replacing the fascia and gutters was held on 4 May 2019 with a good attendance. Ewen and Graham and helpers made a very good start on this with completion planned for near future. The yard was flattened and raked over and the flax bushes inside the fence as well as the cabbage tree were denuded of dead leaves and the red hot pokers and the asparagus were tidied up. The Chestnut tree also got a good haircut. A few hours work really tidied up our yard.

Editor’s Comments This will be the last time this year that you will hear me harping on about the AGM. I have mentioned it in the last two newsletters in the hopes that with enough advanced warning that we will get a good turnout on 12 June. There is a nomination form on page 9 that you can use to nominate or be nominated for any of the positions, whether they are vacant or not. If you wish to volunteer for any of the positions I’m sure you will be most welcome. This is your time to have a say in how your club is run. So come on have a go! Last Club Night we had a number of guests from the Vintage and Veteran Tour which was travelling from Cromwell to Hanmer Springs via the Haast. This tour was organized by Dianne Ross of Ashburton and she gave us a brief rundown on how this event first started. It really does show what you can do with an idea and how it can transform into a well attended event. Part of the attraction for this tour is that it is for Vintage and Veteran cars and is structured as such. It is not a rally nor is it competitive, it is simply a tour involving having a great time, great scenery and great old cars. We are approaching that time of year when a number of our members put their registrations on hold and give their old cars a rest for the winter months. This then becomes an ideal time to start remedying some of those niggling problems that you may have noticed during the summer. Get started on them now before it gets too cold in the shed otherwise spring will suddenly be here and so will those same niggles in your car. With regard to storing your car over the winter months, there are quite a variety of opinions on what should be done including “just park it". Some of the more promoted actions are • Change oil and filter (if you have one) and run the engine for a few minutes. • Lubricate all grease points and hinges. • Check anti-freeze. The above points are to help prevent corrosion. • Fill tank with fuel and add fuel stabilizer. • Put car on jack stands. • Plug exhaust and air intake, you’d be surprized where mice can get into. Use something like tinfoil and don’t forget to remove it in Spring. • Connect battery to a maintenance charger. • Clean and cover you car with a breathable cover. When Spring comes you are ready for another season of happy vintage motoring.

Cheers for now. Don

Arrowtown Autumn Festival The day started with heavy rain in the early hours lessening as the day progressed. We set out from Luggate, Cheryl and friend Judy Thompson in Cheryl’s Mini 1000, myself and navigator Harold, in my Austin 1300 newly back on the road after some Harold the navigator post Targa engine renovation. It was a splash rather than a drive over the Crown Range, and even at that hour the traffic was increasing. Why is the Autumn Festival so popular? The autumn colours surrounding Arrowtown even in that rainy light were inspirational, the setting on Buckingham Street with cars ranging from Veterans, Mike Hannings 1918 Buick on one of its first outings, another was his son Anthony with his outstandingly original Lincoln sedan with a purring V12. The challenge is to find roads where ‘vintage’ motoring can take place as the traffic can be quite intense. It was here that the organisers led us through some of the ‘old’ and new subdivisions, Arthurs Point, Queenstown Hill, Frankton and Shotover Country. Finding the street signs had some of us over running, turning around in quiet streets suddenly busy with traffic, signs that appeared from behind a bus or at funny heights and angles hidden behind burgeoning greenery, Then to lunch at the Doran’s Morven Ferry Road, where it was a chance to socialise and view the cars, and some of Greg’s projects—his beautiful classic wooden boats including a yacht rescued from Dunedin and restored. The rally headed for Cromwell and the Clubrooms for afternoon tea, more chatter, a look at the parts shed and presentations. To the organisers; Karelan, Greg and Noel well done. Graham Taylor

Sunday Run 12 May Four cars and their occupants plus visitors David and Lorna Wright (Banks Peninsula VCC and living near St Bathans) met at Tarras for morning tea. Due to predicted inclement weather (which didn’t arrive until on the way home) only Chairman Murray and Maryann were brave enough to travel in a vintage vehicle. After lunch at Omarama where we were joined by Russell Gutschlag, we drove to Murray Stuart’s lifestyle block a couple of minutes north of the township. There was a variety of Model A’s in various stages of repair, a couple of old trucks and hotrods aplenty to view as well as interesting little huts, one of which was furnished as a tack room and another as an old fashioned hair dressing shop. The men spent some time drooling over Murray’s huge shed and all the equipment. The Stuarts run some sheep and cattle on their 100 acres as well as horses for guests, trekking and other activities. There is also an oval track which Murray and co-driver Noel entertained us with a half dozen laps in Murray’s Model A. All in all a very enjoyable day out. Lynne
