2011/2012 annual report

You have made such a difference in the lives of Manitobans living with cancer. Matthew and his family (our front cover) are a testament to just that. With your help and the support of other partners, CancerCare Manitoba is working to decrease the impact of cancer in our province by preventing the disease as much as possible, detecting it sooner, and treating it more effectively. However, an aging population and increased prevalence of cancer means the demand for CancerCare Manitoba’s services will increase. At CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, we support patient care, research, operations and equipment purchases, as well as education and public awareness about ways you can reduce your own risk of cancer. This is made possible because of you - our very generous donors and fundraisers. Together we can win this fight against cancer. Thank you for supporting CancerCare Manitoba and making a difference in the lives of thousands of Manitobans.

5

ways to reduce your risk

1. Be Tobacco Free

4. Eat Well

Don’t use tobacco products of any kind and avoid second-hand smoke.

It’s as easy as following Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating.

2. Cover Up

5. Check Up

The number of skin cancer cases in Manitoba has increased by two-thirds since 1990. The good news is 90% of skin cancer can be cured if caught early.

The earlier cancer is found, the more successful treatment is likely to be. Follow cancer screening guidelines and report any health changes to your doctor or dentist.

3. Shape Up Being active is important to staying healthy. Just 10 minutes, three times a day can help reduce your risk of some cancers.

Welcome to our first formal annual report. Did you know The CancerCare Manitoba Foundation is the only charity exclusively fundraising for CancerCare Manitoba? This means every donation received stays in Manitoba to offer the best cancer research, care, and patient support available. We are committed to helping CancerCare Manitoba attract and retain the best and the brightest, which has led to incredible advances in cancer research, treatment, and support. While CancerCare Manitoba works in partnership with Manitoba Health, some programs and services may not be eligible for government funding. Your donation to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation helps bridge this gap.

Janice Filmon

Nearly half of CancerCare Manitoba’s research infrastructure is funded through the Foundation – ensuring that our clinical scientists and researchers have the funds needed for critical projects as well as the necessary funding for their laboratories, materials, supplies, and staff. Without infrastructure funding, some critical research projects would simply not be possible. We are proud to have some of the top researchers and clinicians in the world working at CancerCare Manitoba, and one of the reasons they stay is because they know their work and their infrastructure will be funded. While telling you about the amazing people and projects at CancerCare Manitoba, we also want to thank you – our loyal and generous supporters. Cancer is a terrible disease affecting far too many of the people we love. With the generous support of our donors, corporate sponsors, dedicated volunteers and staff, there is reason for optimism.

Research For Dr. Leigh Murphy, fighting cancer is not just a vocation. It’s personal. Her beloved husband of 33 years passed away from stomach cancer. She also has two close friends with breast cancer and has had her own personal scare. “You have to have a certain stamina and stubbornness to overcome this,” she says of her ground-breaking research in breast cancer. “It’s becoming increasingly difficult because it’s becoming increasingly personal. The silver lining is that I didn’t realize the psychological impact of research until my personal involvement. Incredible advances have been made, which gives one a lot of hope.” Dr. Murphy, Director of the Manitoba Breast Cancer Research Group, located within the Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology, a joint institute of CancerCare Manitoba and the University of Manitoba, was part of a landmark international study that confirmed there are at least 10 different categories of breast cancer. She suspects there may be even more. “The hope is, with this information, once breast cancer is found analysis can be done on the tumour and the patient at a very high level to determine treatment,” she explains. “What cancer is using to survive are the tools of evolution, which we don’t fully

It was just another day in the lab for Dr. Shantanu Banerji, staying behind to go over his reams of data…again.

“When estrogen receptors were discovered in breast tumours in the ‘60s it changed the whole landscape of possibilities for women and ended up driving a lot of interesting molecular studies,” she says. “Estrogen controls the growth of breast cancer tumours, so the thought was that inhibiting estrogen might be a treatment for breast cancer. This was true and the anti-hormonal therapies emerged to treat breast cancer.” What keeps Dr. Murphy going on the difficult days is the hope that she can make a difference. “A diagnosis of breast cancer in the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s was pretty much a death sentence in a relatively short period of time for most women,” she says. “Today we do have a cure for some breast cancers. We also have early detection, better targeted care and better treatment, which have led to lower mortality rates since the ‘90s. A lot of women are alive today because of it.”

Dr. Banerji and his wife are clinical scientists – they divide their time between working with patients in the clinic and their research in the lab.

“I remember the day clearly. This one line of data popped out. On paper it looked like any other finding. I sent an email to a colleague that said, ‘I think I have something interesting here’,” he recalls. At the time, Dr. Banerji and his wife Dr. Versha Banerji were in the middle of a Foundation-funded research fellowship at Harvard University in Boston. His finding was the discovery of a breast cancer “fusion gene” – a mutation that involves two normal genes breaking apart and joining as one. It’s a discovery that has already prompted further research that could lead to targeted treatment for a type of breast cancer that has proven difficult to treat. This discovery and subsequent research resulted in Dr. Banerji becoming the lead author of a peer-reviewed paper published in Nature, the prestigious science journal.

“Sometimes it feels like we’re trying to balance five lives,” he smiles. “What drew me to cancer research was the rate of change. It seems like every few months we have a new drug or new target. It’s very exciting. It can also be frustrating because it’s challenging to keep up.” Dr. Banerji was born in India and spent his early childhood in Zambia, Africa. He moved to Winnipeg for middle school. He originally wanted to be an engineer, but when his older brother went into medicine, he decided to try it as well. “It’s great to see success stories among my patients, but it always hurts to see the not-so-successful ones,” he says. “I always ask myself if, at the end of the day, I have done everything I can, and if I have, I can handle the less successful stories with the hope that the next time will be better.”

Dr. Spencer Gibson has pitted himself against one of the deadliest forces known to man: the cancer cell. “My research is all about understanding why a cancer cell does not die. If you take a lung cell and put it in the liver, it will die because it’s not in the right environment. But if you put a lung cancer cell in a liver, it will spread,” says Dr. Gibson, Director of the Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology (MICB), a partnership between CancerCare Manitoba and the University of Manitoba. “What gives a cancer cell the ability to survive in circumstances where it should have died?” What many people don’t realize is that the top three floors of the CancerCare Manitoba building, including MICB, are dedicated to research. Much of that research is funded by the Foundation. Although he is now Director of MICB, Dr. Gibson still spends 75 percent of his time in the lab.

6

While she always showed an aptitude for math and science, Dr. Murphy first became interested in the study of hormones (endocrinology) when she was a teenager attending an all girls’ school in Australia.

but I can’t say ‘that’s it; I’m done’,” says the busy father of three. “You develop a bit of modesty, because there’s luck involved. Someone else who put in just as much work as you didn’t get published.”

That’s when he noticed what many are calling a life-changing discovery.

“My goal, like most researchers, was to get a prominent paper,

understand yet. Mutations were necessary to get us to where we are now but mutations are the basis for cancer as well.”

“People ask why we can’t cure cancer like we did with small pox. But that disease is a foreign virus invading the body. Cancer turns your own cells against you,” he explains. “Even people with the same cancer don’t respond the same to the same treatment.” Although the work of a scientist tends to be slow and methodical, Dr. Gibson sees plenty of room for optimism. “We’re at the point of understanding how a cancer cell is made. We now know all the genes within a cancer cell and how a cancer cell is wired,” he says. “The hope for the future is to develop personalized medicine and targeted therapies so cancer will not be the killer it is today.”

Community Events The Foundation could not continue its support of CancerCare Manitoba’s research and patient care programs without the help of our community. In the 2011-12 fiscal year, 412 community events were held to raise funds for CancerCare Manitoba, raising over $1.4 million. Some of the highlights from the past year include: Kendra’s Walk At age 17, Kendra McBain was being treated in the children’s area of CancerCare Manitoba. She had an incredible rapport with the younger kids and they always seemed to manage a smile when Kendra was around. But as a young adult, enduring constant pain and wrestling with so many different emotions, Kendra often felt the need for a space that was tailored to the teen cancer experience. On May 29, 2009, Kendra’s Walk came alive and the idea that started as a small and simple event to raise enough money to buy a TV and a few movies became anything but. Over 1,000 people lined the grounds of the schoolyard that day, and,

when all was said and done, the event raised more than $160,000 and an entire community stood behind one young woman in her battle against cancer. The TV turned into an entire room designed specifically for teens with cancer, with significant funds directed to CancerCare Manitoba’s Teens Living with Cancer (TLC) support program, as well as further research into rhabdomyosarcoma. Sadly, Kendra passed away in December of 2009, but her legacy continues. So far, her walk has raised over $500,000 for the causes that were closest to her heart.

Songs for Alanna In March 2011, 92 Citi FM held a radio-thon in honour of then morning show host Joe Aiello’s wife Alanna, who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. For 27 hours, the radio station took song requests from listeners who pledged a minimum of $50 to CancerCare Manitoba. The Songs for Alanna event raised over $177,000. “When I remember Alanna, I will think of what you all have done and I will smile,” Joe said.

Music for Mom

Coffeehouse to End Cancer Determined to support a friend who had just been diagnosed with cancer, sixteen-year-old Paige Procter organized a coffee house in Grosse Isle. She was overwhelmed by the support of her hometown and community, who not only bought tickets, but also donated their time, talents and funds to the cause. “For the coffee house, we set a goal of $3,000 – and we doubled it. It was the greatest thing I have ever done and I want to do it again and again and again,” Procter said. “Seeing my community come together in honour of my friend was empowering. I have always heard that one person can make a difference, but seeing it happen was amazing.”

The Indo-Canadian Charity Golf Tournament Inspired by loved ones, the committee volunteers organized the 3rd annual Indo-Canadian Charity Golf Tournament on August 19, 2011. Held at the scenic Larters at St. Andrews Golf & Country Club, the tournament has raised nearly $65,000 - providing hope for today and generations to come.

On September 24, 2011, Canadian flutist Haley Rempel held a fundraising concert in honour of her mother, who passed away from cancer nine years before. The concert at St. John’s Cathedral featured piano, cello, and flute music, along with spoken word performances. It was a moving tribute and a great success, raising close to $5,000 for CancerCare Manitoba. “When I was only 18 years old, I lost my mother to a brutal and unforgiving disease. Nine years have passed since then and I have witnessed again and again the suffering and heartbreak that cancer causes in the lives of others. Music for Mom was about coming together to honour the memory of a loving mother and to rededicate ourselves to the common goal of conquering cancer. It was about what we can achieve through hope and unity,” said Haley.

CHALLENGE FOR LIFE 2011

Determination:

In 2011, more than 700 caring and compassionate Manitobans joined the 4th Annual Challenge for Life 20k Walk. The exceptional efforts of everyone involved resulted in more than $1 million being raised, which was immediately put to work at CancerCare Manitoba. The Challenge is more than an important fundraiser in support of CancerCare Manitoba. It’s an opportunity for individuals to help reduce their personal risk of cancer. Participants of the Challenge for Life are inspired by the opportunity to raise funds to support research, prevention, treatment, patient care and support.

Judy Preston refuses to let cancer stop her. Heck, it can’t even slow her down. Preston, who hails from the small town of Russell, Manitoba, has participated in the Challenge for Life – CancerCare Manitoba Foundation’s 20K Walk – since its beginnings in 2008. The determined woman has overcome a heart condition, problem knees, and colon cancer in order to keep walking. “My sister was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away 14 months later. I promised her I would do something to make a difference,” says Preston, who completed the 2010 Challenge for Life six weeks after undergoing surgery for her cancer. “You always think you can’t do things until you challenge yourself. The first year, I raised $6,000 for the Challenge in our little town.” Judy walks in memory of her sister, Janice Foster, and her best friend, Joan Kobluk, who both lost their battles with cancer. “I walk also for everyone that has fought or is fighting this horrible disease. One day I hope to have a huge team walking with me, but until then, I will continue the trek alone, because I can and I know every thing we do helps. Together we can make a difference.”

A Survivor’s Triumphant Journey Matthew Battled Cancer Twice…and Won (cover photo) When cancer survivors talk about their initial reaction to the diagnosis, relieved is a word they rarely use. But relieved is exactly how Matthew Bear felt. Matthew, a young father of three, began having pain in his right leg in September 2007. After months of sleepless nights and agonizing pain, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in May 2008. “It was actually a relief to know what it was and be able to start treating it,” says Matthew, a business development associate with The Ochman Group at ScotiaMcLeod. “Today testicular cancer is about 90 percent curable. So I was pretty upbeat about it, but you never know for sure. In the back of my mind, I was wondering if I was going to be part of that ten percent.” Matthew’s treatment finished in late summer 2008, but his battle with cancer wasn’t over. Around Christmas time that same year, lower back pain and a swollen leg led to more tests, which had devastating results. “They found that the cancer had spread to part of my hip bone. I was told two bone marrow transplants were needed to have a greater chance for a cure,” he says. “This time my chances went down to 50 percent. With three kids, I was completely devastated, thinking I would not be able to see my babies grow up. My oncologist always made it clear to me that we were still looking for a cure, and he felt we could beat this.” Thankfully, Matthew did beat it. Three years after he finished treatment, Matthew is still cancer-free. “The care you get at CancerCare Manitoba is unbelievable, and it makes a big difference to keep the money here in Manitoba,” he says. “Someone you know is going to need treatment there.”

Accreditation In 2011, CancerCare Manitoba was assessed according to new Accreditation Canada decision levels, and achieved the highest accreditation level – Accreditation with Exemplary Standing. The opportunity to evaluate its performance against national standards of excellence allowed CancerCare Manitoba and its staff to celebrate their successes and learn how to refine and enhance their processes and procedures to provide the best possible care to patients and their families. Within Accreditation Canada’s 2011 review, CancerCare Manitoba met 98% of the survey’s indicators. The indicators measured the organization’s commitment to required organizational practices of safety culture, communication, worklife and workforce, infection control, medication use, falls prevention and risk assessment. System-wide standards also address quality and safety at the organizational level in areas such as governance (Board of Directors) and leadership. While there are always some challenges identified by the survey, CancerCare Manitoba has responded to the preliminary findings and efforts are being made to make the necessary improvements in the identified areas – medication reconciliation, education and training, and communication. Survey results report CancerCare Manitoba is a strong organization, with staff members providing excellent patient and family-centred care.

Mia Maclean Acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Cancer of the blood and bone marrow. That chilling diagnosis forever changed the lives of five-year-old Mia Maclean and her family. Before the nightmare began, Mia was enjoying the summer with her mother Marie-Josée (MJ), father David, sisters Chloée and Zoé and two cocker spaniels on their peaceful acreage near Ste Agathe. Then, one afternoon in June 2009, Mia was taken to emergency with severe pain in her left hip and buttocks. The doctor said it was bursitis. A few weeks later, after being bumped and jostled on a carnival ride, Mia again complained she was hurting in the same spot. At 10 pm that night, with Mia’s pain worsening, her mother knew something wasn’t right. MJ took Mia back to emergency, and more tests were done. The diagnosis was grim. “She was admitted that night,” MJ says. “We got to the room at about 3 am and then from there the bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures and all that started.” Today Mia is a healthy eight-year-old girl with a bright smile and shiny pigtails. Her prognosis is better than her parents dared to dream. “Mia has completely finished her treatments and is not on any medications at all now. We were going to CancerCare once a month for blood tests, but she has improved so much that we only have to go three times a year, just to check to make sure the cancer is still in remission,” says MJ. “Dr. Israels at CancerCare was fantastic; she is very experienced in dealing with the children. She took the time to answer our many questions and was always available when we needed her.” Dr and Mrs Harold and Catherine Peters *PGA of Manitoba Golf Tournaments Phillips, Hager and North Investment Management Piston Ring Service Frank and Jeanne Plett Mr Richard A. Two CancerCare Donors Win Provincial Award Noah Palansky – Outstanding Young Philanthropist Noah believes that kids have the power to make a difference. Since 2008, he has been a shining example of that potential – not only for his family, peers and other children – but also for the business community and entire province. This energetic 15-year-old has helped raise more than $280,000 for CancerCare Manitoba. And he has set a personal goal to raise $1 million in his lifetime for cancer research and care. What began as a personal mission to help his mom, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2008, has turned into something larger. Sadly, Noah’s mother lost her battle with cancer, but Noah remains committed to his personal fundraising goal. In 2011, he participated in CCMB’s Challenge for Life, along with 17 other youth, in the Kids Count group that he created.

Troy Woods was only 17 – an avid hockey player who was looking forward to his last year of high school.

“I started getting really tired. We’d go on a field trip for school, and I’d have to sit down and rest. My first thought was that it was mono,” Woods, now 20, recalls. “I went for a blood test, and my dad got the call to take me to the hospital. Cancer was the last thing on our minds. We were unbelievably shocked when the doctor told me I had ALL (acute lymphocytic leukemia). We just sat there in silence, unable to say anything.” Within a few months, Troy no longer recognized himself when he looked in the mirror. “The first nine months were pretty intense, with lots of chemo and radiation. I was 185 pounds before I got sick – suddenly I was 135 pounds. I lost my hair. I didn’t look like myself. For a long time, I didn’t think I ever would again. There were so many changes.” Teens Living with Cancer (TLC), a support group funded by CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, was a consistent source of strength for Troy. “There were days I was so exhausted I didn’t want to go out in public. I was really sick, and TLC was the one place I could turn to. Some things I couldn’t tell my parents or my friends. There was no judgment in the group – they’d all been through the same thing.” Troy kept up with his studies, and he is now in his second year at the Asper School of Business. His cancer treatments will be finished in March 2013. “That’s gonna be some party – I can promise you that,” he laughs. “I’ve gotten my strength back and I’m back playing hockey. I’m finally starting to feel like the old me again.”

Patient & Family Services Jill Taylor-Brown and her team have been called angels by many. CancerCare Manitoba’s Director of Patient and Family Support Services believes that patients need emotional and spiritual care in addition to medical care. “I find it so rewarding to make real connections with people – being able to help them, no matter what the outcome,” she says. “While we’re working on ways to cure cancer, we need to support the people who are going through it right now. People are very resilient, but that resilience is helped by having the right information and support at the right time.” Originally from Winnipeg, Jill moved to Australia for an adventure. She was a social worker in the oncology unit in a large hospital in Sydney when she got the call that her 29-year-old sister had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Deciding to stay in Winnipeg to be close to her family, Jill became the first oncology social worker at St. Boniface Hospital in 1980. As the Director of Patient and Family Support Services

at CancerCare, she still spends at least 20 percent of her time with patients and their families. “It’s important to always stay connected with people going through this,” she says. Her department offers a variety of services, including individual and family counseling and support groups, as well as dietitians, a speech language pathologist, and the Breast Cancer Centre of Hope. With the support of CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, these services are enhanced by programs for patients and families such as Art Therapy, Yoga , Pilates, the Guardian Angel Caring Room, the Patient and Family Resource Centre, Brain Fog, Cancer Transitions, Peer Support, Music to My Ears and more. “Music to My Ears brings the healing power of music to CancerCare. It helps create a calm, peaceful, environment. It’s so scary to come here for the first time – anything we can do to help a patient feel more centred and calm is significant,” says Jill. “These programs are all making a difference in people’s quality of life.”
