 TheEFQMExcellenceAwardsrecogniseRoleModelorganisationsinEuropeandbeyond,whether private,publicornonͲforͲprofit.Theseareexcellentorganisationswithanindisputabletrackrecord ofsuccessinturningstrategyintoactionandcontinuouslyimprovingtheirperformance. TheEFQMExcellenceAwardsaresupportedbyoneofthemostchallengingassessmentprocesses. Toassessorganisationsandidentifyrolemodelpractices,aninternationalteamof5to7experienced, specifically trained managers spend one week on site and an average of 500 hours in total per applicant.Theyreviewdocumentsandinterviewindividualsaswellasgroupstoanalysehoweffective theorganisationisagainsttheEFQMExcellenceModel.Thefeedbackreportpreparedbytheassessors provide a wealth of value adding input to help the organisation improve at a strategic level. The reports are then presented to an independent jury that decides the level of recognition for each Nominee. TheobjectiveofthisbookistopresentthehighͲperformingorganisationswhohaveparticipatedin the2015Awards.

Inthisbooklet,weareproudtorecogniseallorganisationswhichreceivedanEFQMRecognitionin thepastyear.WhetherSMEsorlargeentities,inindustryorservicesectors,privateorpublic,theyall haveonethingincommon:theyarerelentlessintheirpursuitofexcellence.Theyweresignificantly morenumerousin2014(632)thanin2013(531)andthispositivetrendcontinuesin2015,largely thankstotheeffortsofournationalpartners. ThevalueprovidedbyexcellenceassessmentsingeneralandthatoftheEFQMExcellenceAwardsin particular,isstrong.Thisenticesmoreandmoreorganisationstotakeadvantageofthisopportunity to nurture their own journey towards excellence. They eventually become role models for the excellencecommunitythankstocommittedleadershipandengagedteams.Inturn,wecanalllearn fromtheirgoodpractices. Sixteen of the most mature organisations took part in the 2015 EFQM Excellence Awards. They expectedtoreceivehighlevelfeedbackfromaninternationalteamofexperiencedassessors,asnew inputfortheirjourney,andtomotivatetheirteamswitharecognitionfortheirachievement.Investing over500hoursperapplicant,our102trainedassessorsobservedwitharigorousapproachwhatthese organisationsaredoingtoreachandsustainsuperioroverallperformance.Theunderlyingprocess wasrevisedthisyearwiththeobjectivetoprovideevenmorevaluetoparticipatingorganisations(our surveyshoweditwasindeedthecase),focusingonmorestrategicfeedback. In the end, we are very pleased to announce that the Jury gave the Excellence Award to two organisationsthisyear:BMWAG(Regensburgplant,Germany)andWakefieldandDistrictHousing (UK). 8 applicants received Excellence Prizes for outstanding performance on at least one specific FundamentalConcept.The5otherfinalistsreachedascoreofatleast600points.Congratulationsto allparticipantsfortheiroutstandingachievement. EFQM Excellence Award Winner The BMW Group’s Regensburg plant has a workforceofapproximately 9,000 people who produce around 1,100 units daily of theBMW1Series,2Series Gran Tourer, 3 Series Sedan,4SeriesConvertible aswellasBMWM3andM4 variants, individual and government vehicles, fourͲ wheel drive models, the BMW Z4 and BMW X1, making the site an importantpartoftheBMW Group’s global production network. In 2014, a total of 272,015 carswerebuilt.

Allinall,approximately6millionvehicleshaverolledofftheassembly line since 1986.  The Geriatric Health Centres of the City of Graz (GGZ) are a nonͲprofit, public service organisation operatinginthepublichealthandsocialservicessectorasamunicipalenterprise.Theyprovidearound 20graduatedcareformsforpatientsandelderlypeople.TheyconsistoftheAlbertSchweitzerClinic, AlbertSchweitzerHospice,AssistedLivingand4Nursinghomes.Thereareintotalabout800patients, residentsordayͲcareͲpatients. 



How did you start your journey towards excellence?  Westartedourjourneytoexcellenceattheturn of the century. Since then, we have improved every part of our company. We renewed the whole infrastructure (buildings, technologies, etc.) and integrated management methods like BSC, a complaint management and we founded theAlbertSchweitzerInstituteforGeriatricsand Gerontology with focus on research, education, knowledgemanagementandconsultingin2014. TheBusinessProcessReengineeringapproachhas been used to design new products (new and innovativecarefacilities).In1999wehadtwocare facilitiesandtodayweofferapproximatelytwenty differentcarefacilitieswhichareneedͲbasedand affordable(westilldevelopnewones).Thehealth expertsdecidetogetherwithpatientsandreferral doctorsthebestpointofcare.

These are the crucial factors of being one of the bestgeriatrichealthcarecentresofEurope.  This is the first time you apply for the EFQM Excellence Awards; what have you learned throughthisprocess?  After 15 years reorganising our whole company, we decided to participate at the Austrian ExcellenceAward2014.Wewonthiscompetition andasalogicalnextstepweappliedfortheEEA. Our innovation strength is inspired by the Fundamental Concepts of Excellence and we realise at which stage of organisational developmentweare.Duringtheprocessthemulti professional teamwork was enforced and employees got a very good overview of the company. MetsäFibrehasbeensystematicallyworkingtowardsExcellencesinceitadoptedacustomerͲfocused process management model in 2000. Our decision to enter a EuropeanͲlevel competition has created a great deal of enthusiasm and pride among our employees, which is reflected in positive energy in operationaldevelopment. Although preparing the application felt like a majorproject,thefeedbackfromemployeeshas been positive and the management document will be  utilisedintraining. Page|30

We have actively been engaginginqualitymanagementworkfor years,butwestillhaveplentyofroomfor improvement.Wearelookingforwardto our feedback discussion with the assessors. Operations are developedandimprovementsareimplementedaspart of dayͲtoͲday work. Old production records are challenged, and new ways to improve production efficiencyaresoughtsystematically.



Total effluent flow (m3 per tonne of pulp) is an important indicator in terms of corporate social responsibility, reflecting our commitment to reducing theenvironmentalimpactofouroperationsinlinewith sustainabilitygoals.ThedottedlineillustratestheBest AvailableTechnology(BAT)limitsconfirmedbytheEU.
