Know how your baby grows week by week after fertilization! By Nathen Martin on 2013-09-16 01:14:29

... The process of fertilization is also known as conception, fecundation and syngamy. Actually it is the process where the fusion of gametes takes place to initiate the development of a new individual organism. The process involves the fusion of an ovum with a sperm, which will eventually lead to the development of an embryo. This process occurs within the body of the female in internal conception. Basically, the cycle of fecundation and development of new individuals is called as reproduction. Gastrulation is a process which occurs around 16 days after conception, is a point in development when the implanted blastocyst develops the three germ layers. These three layers are known as the endoderm, ectoderm and the mesoderm. This is the time when the genetic code of the father becomes fully involved in the development of the embryo. It might seem strange to you as generally women are not pregnant in the first or second week. Conception totally occurs about two weeks after your last period begins. This means your period is counted as a part of your pregnancy even though you were not pregnant at that time. Then the sperm and egg unite in one of your Fallopian tubes to form a one celled entity called a zygote. If more than one egg is released, you may have multiple zygotes. After the process of fertilization, the zygote travels down the Fallopian tube toward the uterus. At the same time, it starts dividing rapidly to form a cluster of cells which resembles a tiny raspberry. The inner group of cells becomes the embryo and the outer group becomes the membranes that nourish and protects it. Fourth step is of implantation. When the embryo reaches the uterus, the dividing ball of cells gets separated into two different sections. In the fifth week of pregnancy, the actual fetal development starts that means the embryonic development begins. In the fifth week of pregnancy, the baby’s brain, spinal cord, heart and other organs begin to form. By the end of this fifth week, your baby is just as small as the tip of the pen. The growth is rapid after this and the heart of your baby starts pumping blood. Basic facial feature stars appearing. Soon the small buds will start emerging as small legs and arms. During the seventh week, the head and face of your baby develop very rapidly. Tiny nostrils also start developing and eye lenses begin to form. By the end of this week, your baby might be bigger than the top of the pencil eraser. In the eight weeks, the arms and legs grow longer and the fingers also start to form. This is the time, when the eyes of your baby are visible and the upper lips ad nose is also visible. By the end of this week, your baby might be as long as a half inch.

During this period, your baby is officially described as a fetus. The genital of your baby starts developing in the eleventh week. By the end of this week, your baby may be two inches long.
