If you haven't bought or tasted an Orin Swift wine, you must be shopping at the wrong place! Dave Phinney of Orin Swift Cellars is the new Goldfinger of Wine. Phinney got his start in the wine industry after spending a semester studying abroad in Florence. When he returned from Florence to the University of Arizona where he was studying Political Science at the time, he immediately began working in a wine shop. After graduation Phinney started work at Robert Mondavi Winery, where Phinney gladly began at the bottom staining barrels, cleaning bins, and working night shift crew. Stints at Whitehall Lane and Bennett Lane followed, but during all this Phinney had quietly started making wine on his own under the name of Orin Swift, combining his Grandfather's first name with his Mother's maiden name. 2000 is when Phinney's claim to fame was born; The
Prisoner! Phinney knew he did not want to make several mediocre wines from each variety, so instead he used only the best fruit of Syrah, Petite Sirah and Charbono to create the first Prisoner. The next year Dave started Orin Swift Cellars on a shoestring budget, "with two tons of purchased Zinfandel grapes and one pair of shoes" as his wife likes to say. Orin Swift has grown exponentially over the last few years adding Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and a blended white and red to the program. In addition, Orin Swift recently purchased forty-eight acres of land in the hills above Oakville and they hope to someday build a winery there. Never one to rest on his laurels, Dave also recently purchased some vineyards and a winery in the steep hillsides of the Roussillon, near Maury in the French PyrĂŠnĂŠes. There he produces a red wine called D-66 made predominantly from 60-100 year old Grenache, with a small percentage of Syrah and Carignane from soils of schist, granite and limestone. Well this weekend you can taste an impressive line-up of Orin Swift wines that may even have my competition coming to The Vineyard to taste with us! The Wine Spectator Top 100 will be released on November 18th and this Orin Swift tasting will be in the Top Ten of our tastings over the last nine years!!! Don't miss it! Line-up will be: D 66:Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan Locations F: France. Abstract is a blend of Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino Grenache, Petite Sirah, and Syrah primarily from hillside vineyards.
