EMERALD ASH BORER CONFIRMED IN THE UNITED COUNTIES OF LEEDS & GRENVILLE

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed the presence of the emerald ash borer (EAB) in the United Counties of Leeds & Grenville. The insect was discovered near Mallorytown in late July. The EAB does not pose a threat to human health however it is a very destructive beetle which has killed large numbers of ash trees in Ontario and the north eastern U.S. As this insect can spread rapidly with the help of people, the public can help slow its progress by not transporting fire wood or other infested ash materials. Regulatory controls may be put in place by the CFIA to help control its spread after the conclusion of the surveying season this fall. The United Counties of Leeds & Grenville will be working with local levels of government and the public to form a Task Force to respond to the EAB outbreak in a coordinated fashion. We will also be partnering with other organizations already dealing with the EAB. For further information regarding the EAB please contact the CFIA at 1-866-463-6017 or visit their web site at www.inspection.gc.ca/pests . Additional information about the EAB or the UCLG EAB Task Force may be obtained by calling the UCLG EAB Hotline at 1-800-770-2170, ext. 2847 or by visiting the UCLG “Limerick Forest” website at www.limerickforest.ca. This web site will be updated regularly with current information. For further information contact: Geoff McVey, Forest Manager 1-800-770-2170, ext. 2847 –30–
