Yoga Terminology Sanskrit is the ancient language used in many yoga classes. Here are a few terms you may hear in class. Asana (AH-sah-nah) It literally means “easy seat, but it refers to any yoga posture. A series of asanas makes up a vinyasa, or flow. Surya Namaskar (SUE-ree-ah NAH-mas-car) Also known as the Sun Salutation, this integral part of yoga practice is a series of poses that warm-up the body and includes downward dog, cobra, and standing forward bend. Savasana (SHA-vass-ah-nah) Also known as the Corpse Pose, it is traditionally the last asana done in a yoga class. Yogis lie on their backs, completely still with eyes closed and concentrate on relaxing every part of the body, from toes to jaw muscles.

stori es member success story

Sue McTigue

Swimming has always been very important to me. I’ve always been a distance swimmer and spent every summer day at the pool as a child. I taught swim lessons for 15 years and have officiated for USA swimming. It’s also my time for thinking and reflecting. On January 31, 2010, I woke up in the middle of the night with terrible pain on the right side of my neck, shoulder, and arm. Within a day, my right arm was completely paralyzed. A spine surgeon found that I had a herniated disc at C6-7, completely blocking the nerve to my right arm — he told me it was the worst he’d ever seen. The disc above it was also unhealthy. I immediately had cervical fusion surgery to remove the damaged discs and fuse three vertebrae in my neck. The surgeon doubted that my right arm would recover, as the nerve was severely damaged. I spent six weeks in a neck brace. My one burning question was: “Will I be able to swim again?” The surgeon’s prognosis was not favorable; he said I probably wouldn’t be able to get my arm out of the water. My reply was, “Watch me. I think I can.” When I was able, I started floating, then dog paddling, then rotating from side to side, loosening the muscles in my neck and torso, swimming with an underwater recovery. I increased my length in 500-yard increments until I reached 3,000 yards a day. Though I still can’t feel some of my fingers, I can swim 3,000 yards in less than an hour. VillaSport’s 100 Mile Swim Club gave me the incentive I needed to push myself and return to being the swimmer I’d always been. I doubt that I would have completed the 100 miles so quickly without the incentive. My advice to others is to learn to swim well. The excellent aquatic instructors at VillaSport can help. Swimming is a wonderful exercise that can refresh your mind, body, and spirit, and if an injury prevents you from running, biking or dancing, swimming can help you get back or stay in shape. And the hot tub feels so much better after a long swim!
