Welcome From the Dean

Dear new Villanova Parent, The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is one of the most rigorous and rewarding academic paths that Villanova University has to offer. Our students seek knowledge through hard work, deep exploration of subject matter and the acquisition of high-value skills. It is this drive and dedication to the pursuit of what’s true, new, and next that keeps our students engaged and empowered—destined to achieve meaningful success in today’s world. On behalf of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, welcome. Sincerely, Adele Lindenmeyr, PhD Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The right direction for those who question directions. Students of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences find their place by defining it. Here they’ll identify and create possibilities through investigation and self-discovery, challenging coursework and unparalleled interactions with renowned professors. The CLAS educational experience is designed to help students flourish in today’s demanding workplace, fostering analytical skills, problem solving and intellectual creativity.

It’s about discovery, not decree. Just ask our students.

Setting Course for Discovery. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Villanova uniquely prepares our students to become critical thinkers, strong communicators and ethical leaders. With an emphasis on teacher-scholar engagement, experiential learning and global perspective, learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom. Students may expand their horizons with the Academic Travel in Liberal Arts and Sciences (ATLAS) study abroad sessions, conquer new audiences with the Villanova-Abbey Theatre Exchange and Summer Studio program in Dublin, Ireland, or gain political experience right in the center of it all with the Washington Minimester. With CLAS, tomorrow is theirs to chart.

Keith Martinez Major: Communication Truman Scholar

’16 Keith was awarded the 2015 Harry S. Truman Scholarship, recognizing his exceptional leadership potential and his dedication to public service. A Gates Millennium Scholar and Villanova Presidential Scholar, Keith is from the Oglala Lakota Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. In 2014, Keith was selected by the Youth Service of America and the Festival of Children Foundation to serve as a National Child Awareness Month Ambassador for the state of South Dakota. Upon graduation from Villanova, Keith plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in American Indian Studies at the University of Arizona. He hopes to become a member of the Pine Ridge Reservation tribal council in order to help improve conditions on the reservation, and work at a non-profit organization that focuses on developing educational opportunities for Native Americans.

Elaine Roghanian ’15 Major: English Hustle Summit Fellow, FindSpark

Elaine’s desire to study and work in France led her to the Villanova program at the Université Catholique de Lille, now part of the Academic Travel in the Liberal Arts and Sciences (ATLAS) program. It offered her the opportunity to live and study with French students in a pre-approved program with academic and cultural support. Thanks to a Villanova liaison at the Université, Elaine was able to stay in France until August while interning as a summer program coordinator and photographer. She is currently a Hustle Summit Fellow with FindSpark, where she develops promotional materials and plans events.

Cara Mathers ’17 Major: Comprehensive Science Villanova Undergraduate Research Fellow Growing up between a river and a bay sparked Cara’s interest in finding ways to protect America’s waterways from environmental impacts. When she was a CLAS sophomore, she was encouraged by a professor to submit a proposal to the Villanova Undergraduate Research Fellows program, which provides financial support for student research. Thanks to the fellowship, Cara spent a summer testing lead accumulation in local rivers and creeks to determine whether heavy metals are being embedded into the waterways.
