Message from the President Dear Parents, Alumni and Friends of Villanova College, Welcome to the 2017/2018 Year-In-Review and Registry of Donors. This publication recognizes the great generosity of our current and alumni parents, alumni and friends of Villanova – a community that believes in the mission of our school and is dedicated to helping us fulfill it on a daily basis. Villanova College really is a unique school. We have always been able to do more with less. As you may have noticed in the previous pages, our expenditures in many areas have decreased while we have continued to develop our academic and extra-curricular programming. We offer a breadth of programs in the academics, arts, athletics, leadership and social outreach allowing each of our students the freedom to find an opportunity that they can become passionate about and excel in. We continue to be responsible stewards of our assets and are diligent about making the best use of these and the generous contributions of our benefactors. We know that we are doing great work here, as evidenced by the many successes of our alumni who consistently come back to tell us about the impressive and varied endeavours that they are embarking upon. We are proud of the diversity of experiences that they pursue and the fact that they continuously prove themselves to be leaders who serve with pride in their communities at school, work and home. We can only continue to do this great work with your continued support. Therefore, I invite you to read through the following Year-In-Review which highlights only some of the ways that VC faculty and staff work with each and every one of our students to provide exciting challenges both within and outside of the classroom so that every VC Knight can discern and exceed his/her potential. I also invite you to continue building on the strong foundations that have been laid by preceding families by donating to any area of need that speaks to you. Please visit the Support VC tab on our website to learn more about how you can make a difference in the educational experience of our students. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of the individuals, families, businesses and organizations listed in this Registry of Donors for their generosity and the faith that they have exhibited in our work and mission by donating. It is because of you that we can continue to fulfill our mission of educating young people, engaging them in their spiritual, intellectual, physical and social development. Thank you for your continued support. Yours in St. Augustine,

Paul Paradiso President

Campus Ministry Report “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me for he has anointed me to bring ... good news to the poor, release to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free and proclaim a year of the Lord’s favor” ~ St. Teresa of Avila This passage, often referred to as “Jesus’ Mission Statement”, outlines much of what Jesus came to do, what he came to share and who he ultimately came to be. Jesus came to heal, to forgive and to lead by serving . . . he came so that we might know God and we might know love. As Catholic Christians we are invited to do, but also to “be” the same. Through Campus Ministry we try to bring alive the Spirit of Jesus’ mission statement in the lives of our students, our staff and faculty as well as the communities and world we live and serve within. Some of the highlights of the 2017 – 2018 academic year are new twists on old ideas or ministry experiences that grew out of a call from our community. The biggest change came in the smallest packages at VC this year. Child Sponsorship, a program where we sponsor 10 children in Cameroon Africa who have been affected in some way by AIDS and began as an idea proposed during the Overnight Fast way back in 2004, shifted from an Upper School focus to a Grade 6 project which we call Kids2Kids - kids helping kids in the world.

VILLANOVA COLLEGE 2018 REGISTRY OF DONORS

The program was conceived by two members of the Grade 12 Leadership Class, Helena Novatsidis and Adriana Gurreri, who developed classroom workshops and activities to build awareness of children in the developing world and the challenges they face growing up. The grade 6 students received action bracelets, signed a prayer banner and developed a few action campaigns with the help of a grade 6 executive team that led their classmates and eventually the school through fundraising and advocacy activities in support of the kids we sponsor with Chalice. The activities included a video letter from our grade 6 students to Cameroon, a prayer service presentation, a Cookie Exchange program where the executive team members made cookies and exchanged them for milk bags with students in the entire school so we could make sleeping mats for children in the developing world. The Kids2Kids program was successful in creating leadership opportunities for some of our youngest students while being mentored by our student leaders to create change in our world. Another re-boot this year was Street Life Awareness. A program from Villanova’s early years and brought back in 2018 as we began working with Reverend Deb Rapport of Arise Ministry, a street outreach ministry that primarily works with women in crisis. Street Life Awareness took place on a cold weekend in January and brought fifteen Villanova grade 12 students through an extensive street walk, an evening of discussion and prayer, a morning activity making street kits and hearing the story of Angel, a woman who spent over fifteen years on the street and caught up in trades of the street. She shared her story and opened the eyes of the students to a part of Toronto that many of us never see or hear about. The experience ended with mass at St. Michael’s Cathedral In June, 11 VC students and Mr. Lambert began their summer with a twelve day mission trip to Ecuador to help build part of a village school in the Chimborazo province. Its was a gift for the students to travel to new parts of the world and bring a little Villanova love-in-action to others and bring the experience home as they continue to form themselves in the Spirit of Jesus’ mission statement. There were too many social outreach and leadership projects that took place in 2017-18 to list here, but suffice it to say that our students, staff and faculty commit to living out Jesus’ mission every day and in a real way at Villanova College evidenced by the over 8,500 Christian Service hours completed by our Upper School students alone.

VC - We are the change!

SPORTS REPORT The 2017-18 athletic season proved to be another successful year for Villanova in many different sports, but most notably basketball and soccer. The varsity girls basketball team was able to make it all the way to the CISAA Championship game, before losing a tough game in the final to a talented Crestwood team. The U-14 girls basketball team were able to go one step further by capturing the division 2 CISAA Championship. On the boy’s side, both the U-14 and U-16 team put together a great regular season, with the U-16s going undefeated while the U-14s lost only one game. This great regular season play carried over into the playoffs with both teams capturing the CISAA Division 2 championship at home in the VAC. The junior football team captured the YRAA Junior Boys 6-on-6 football championship, with an undefeated regular season. Congratulations to all team members as well as coaches Lio and Chahine. On the volleyball court, once again it was heartbreak for Coach M. Paradiso and the U-14 Girls Volleyball team finishing as finalists for the third year in row. In the spring season VC Knights took to the fields when the snow finally melted and were able to make use of the brand new, state-of-the-art, Frankie De Gasperis Athletic Fields, where the senior girls soccer team, along with coaches Figliano and Will, went undefeated to capture the CISAA championship versus fierce competitors from Appleby College by a convincing score of 7-2. The junior girls team struggled out of the gate early in league play, but finished strong capturing their third consecutive CISAA championship. Congratulations to the girls and coaches Aiello and Mascarenhas.

The track and field team saw most of their success in the field competition. Outstanding performances resulted in multiple medals in discus, javelin, and shotput by Elizabeth Campisi (3 CISAA medals), Ethan Payne (3 CISAA Medals), Jesse Becker (2 CISAA medals) while Scott Logush, Will Dondalson and Elizabeth Di Pasquale added singles. On the track, the Midget Girls 4x100m relay (Victoria Baranca, Jessica Clow, Eva Peligrino, Maggie Kita) earned a bronze medal at CISAA. Congratulations to all team members and coaches Redhead and Chahine. U14 Boys Basketball

Middle School track and field, saw record breaking performances by Grade 8 Lauren Neil and Grade 7 Emily Frankovic in 200 metres and triple jump respectively. Congratulations to our class of 2018 graduating students who have earned financial incentives at the university level in the United States to continue their excellent athletic and academic pursuits. John Manning is attending Brown University (wrestling), Helena Novatsidis is attending Cleveland State (soccer) and Tyler Pryce is attending York University (basketball). Thank you to all of our athletes and coaches for an outstanding year.

ARTS REPORT Ever an integral aspect of life at Villanova College, the Arts Program enjoyed a successful and busy fall season in the 2017-2018 school year. In November, the senior jazz band and VC Voices entertained King City during “Christmas in King even singing to light the official King City Christmas tree with mayor Steve Pellegrini. The Christmas concert saw all of our talented ensembles take the stage at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts and ignite the Christmas spirit in our community. Our Middle School musical, Fiddler on the Roof, was a resounding success selling out both performances. Students in grades 4 through 8 were stars on stage at Our Lady of Grace Shrine at Marylake as they beautifully depicted a story about family, love, acceptance and tradition. On February 21st, at our 9th annual Arts Knight, Upper School visual art students showcased a wonderful display of artwork demonstrating the remarkable talents of our student artists. Music students from both the Upper and Middle School performed songs, dance and instrumental pieces. In April, Middle School and Upper School music students played and sang at the annual spring concert held at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts. Jesus Christ Superstar musical performances in May demonstrated the collaboration between the Music, Drama, Visual Arts, and Technological Design departments. From set design to production to performance, the show was a resounding success due to the efforts and collaboration of all involved.

A noteworthy highlight for the Visual Arts program was the Art Society King (A.S.K.) exhibition held at the King City Heritage Center in February. This was the third partnership between the Villanova Visual Arts Department and A.S.K. The exhibition also included the work of student artists from The Country Day School and King City Secondary School. The exhibition was a resounding success. With nearly 100 pieces of artwork on display, members of the greater King Township community were able to view the exceptional work of Villanova’s Upper School artists. Finally, June 2017 saw the completion of community-based, mixed media artworks by the Grade 12 visual arts students. These pieces are intended to remain on permanent display at Villanova as a memento of the students’ artistic growth and development. Congratulations to the grade 12 artists from the 2017-2018 school year on a job well done!

Special Report: Rebuilding the frankie de gasperis athletic fields

A Field of Dreams – The VC Artificial Turf Project The Villanova College artificial field turf project came to completion in the spring of 2018 after officially breaking ground in November of 2016. While challenging winter weather delayed the completion of the project, the end result is a state-of-the-art playing field that our Villanova Knights can proudly call home. The history of the Frankie De Gasperis Athletic Fields dates back to 2000, when Romeo De Gasperis, of ConDrain, donated all of the site work for the establishment of the first phase of the physical plant of Villanova College. It was at this time that Romeo and ConDrain asked that the athletic field be named in memory of Frankie De Gasperis, Romeo’s late brother. The field was dedicated in September of 2000 at a ceremony where members of the De Gasperis family were present. This included Frankie De Gasperis (junior) – the then 10 year old son of Frankie De Gasperis (senior) in whose name the field was being dedicated. It was only fitting that Frankie De Gasperis (junior) served as Project Manager of the artificial field turf project some sixteen years later. The original field served the VC athletic programs and the community for 15 years. When it became evident that the field needed to be upgraded to continue to serve both the Villanova College community and King City residents, Romeo De Gasperis and ConDrain once again offered their generous support to build the artificial turf. Sadly, Romeo De Gasperis passed away prior to the completion of the field, but the entire De Gasperis family was in attendance on October 20th, 2018 when the field was officially rededicated at a private ceremony honouring Romeo’s memory as a generous benefactor and great friend of Villanova College. The field was blessed at Homecoming 2018 by Fr. Tom McCarthy, OSA, Prior of the Augustinians at Marylake. The senior girls soccer team was the first to take to the new field in the spring of 2018 and handily captured the CISAA championship on their new home turf. The $2.3 million project was funded entirely by donations. Villanova College would like to thank ConDrain – the De Gasperis family, King United Soccer Club, the Township of King and all of the donors to the project for their support and generosity. Please come out and support your Villanova Knights at one of our upcoming home games on the turf!
