luxury. Some are reincarnations of European castles, Italian palaces, and the Kasbahs of North Africa, while others provide us with little glimpses of Hawaii and Hollywood. Not all, therefore, are in keeping with the spirit and traditions of Bali. Understandably, the desire is to blend the familiarity and comforts of home with an exotic ambience and a tropical climate, but this East-meets-West concept can also be accomplished in a manner that is far less glitzy and much more in keeping with the environment and culture. Take Villa 3210, for example. Constructed of entirely organic materials, this magical hideaway rests serenely beside a windblown beach in Seseh, a traditional fishing village on the south-western coast of the island. The villa was not built for business purposes; instead it is the realisation of a dream, a bona fide home, designed and created by its Italian owner, fashion designer and clothing manufacturer, Kiko A.Croserio. The approach is by way of a country lane; emerald rice fields line the road as it meanders through an avenue of coconut palms. Colourful temple ceremonies, together with farmers in conical hats riding rusty old bicycles, are a common sight.- the bucolic daily life of Seseh village has not been dented by tourism. The entrance to the 25-are 3210 Estate is equally time-honoured. Alongside a rushing waterfall, a wooden footbridge traverses a narrow river. From here onwards your senses will be awakened by a myriad of textures - bamboo, warm timber, cool stone, smooth tiles, clay, thatch, mosaic, sparkling terrazzo, and pebbles set in cement. Soothing ripples originate from the enticing swimming pool, punctuated by a flourishing fan palm on a small island in the centre. A hedge of hibiscus borders a gently swaying field of rice, coconut grove gardens tumble down to the beach; the melodious sound of the waves is constant and the unbroken view of the ocean and coastline is truly breathtaking. There are three bedrooms at Villa 3210 including a self-contained guest pavilion beside the pool. This african influenced circular gazebo boasts a conical thatched roof bordered by gnarled frangipanis, a majestic breadfruit tree and a spiky pandanus. A red and black ABORIGINAL motif is woven into the smooth pebbled terrace and the river is channelled along one side. Entering the main building of the intriguing oval shaped villa is like walking into a treasure trove; rustic innovation is blended with western comfort and quality, and the attention to detail is remarkable. Every step that you take will reveal a surprise, such as an antique door, an ornate washbasin, a hidden alcove,

or a garden bathtub fashioned like the spirals of a giant NAUTILUS shell. You could spend a month in the property and still continue to be struck by the decorative embellishments and blend of rich colours. Puri Sejuk means

᠀䌀漀漀氀 Palace'; the fresh sea breezes are cool and refreshing, and the house is

undoubtedly cool in both senses of the word. Reminiscent of a boat and using nature's ready-made gifts, the organic villa is built around a robust bamboo framework designed by Austrian artist and architect, Wolfgang Widmoser. Every structural element of the villa's framework has been joined together using the methods of thousand-year-old Torajan bamboo craftsmanship. The walls of the property are constructed from moulded clay; the floors, columns and timber panelling from reddishhued, Indonesian merbau wood; and the roof from traditional alang alang thatch. The funky design of the villa is timeless and exotic; in harmony with the environment and aesthetically beautiful. The downstairs living area is dominated by thick bamboo pillars and gently slanting trusses, which extend upwards, fanlike, to form merging apexes that support the ceiling, undeniably suggestive of the cabin of a ship. Arched doorways mark the thickness of the chunky curved walls, and windows shaped like eyes offer a glimpse beyond the borders to a carved Buddha statue resting outside. The furnishings are equally stylish, with contemporary chairs, sofas and cushions, built-in shelving, pendulous copper lanterns and wall lamps. A solid spiral staircase, fashioned from merbau wood, leads up to the "deck of the ship", an enchanting upstairs lounge room boasting 180° of windows, each of which swing wide open on a horizontal hinge, to generate a sense of open-air living. The timber floors are garnished with oriental rugs and furnished with antique daybeds, tables and local artifacts. West facing, this is a wonderful spot for enjoying the sunsets, with comfortable cushioned sofas positioned to the best advantage. Indeed, the vista from here is truly awe-inspiring; a spectacular panorama of rice fields, volcanoes, coconut trees, beach, Indian Ocean, and dramatic coastline all the way down to Uluwatu on Bali's southwestern-most tip. A capricious mixture of antiquities, nature, art, architectural uniqueness, modern luxury and magnificent views, Villa 3210 will continue to enchant you, and its magic will follow you, long after you've left the island.
