Mission Statement Summer at Village is dedicated to providing enrichment activities that encourage social, emotional, and physical growth through a variety of engaging recreation, art, athletic, and academic programs. Enrollment Information Welcome to Summer at Village School. We hope you discover the assortment of summer treasures that await you at camp this year. • Summer at Village School is open to all students regardless of which school they attend during the school year.

• Enroll your child in classes based on the grade they are entering in the fall. Students who have completed Transitional Kindergarten in June 2013 can enroll in classes appropriate for 1st graders. • Sign up by April 12, 2013 and waive the enrollment fee. Enrollment form must be postmarked or faxed by 4/12/13. • Program fees are listed within the class description. All fees include materials and supplies. Lunch is not included in the fees but can be ordered in advance. See page 30. • Many classes fill quickly. Register early to secure your space. • Stay updated on class availabilty and new information. Efforts will be made to assign students affected by such change to other available programs. A complete refund will be given in cases where program replacement is not possible. Enrollment includes a $50 nonrefundable registration fee. A refund is given, less registration fee, when withdrawing on or prior to May 17, 2013. There will be NO REFUNDS if a student withdraws from summer camp after May 17, 2013. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Important Notes & Daily Procedures Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures

Absences & Tardies

• Morning drop-off is between 8:45am9:00am on the west side of Swarthmore Avenue.(See map on page 1)

Please call 310-463-4840 to report absences. Since excessive absences or tardiness may affect the quality of a camper’s experience, we ask camper’s to attend each day and arrive on time for the start of class.

• TK and Kinder Campers can be walked to classroom by parents between 8:45am and 9:00am. • Pick-up in carpool area after the morning session between 12:20-12:30pm. Morning campers stay through the end of lunch. • Drop-off at La Cruz campus for the afternoon session between 12:00-12:10pm. • Please do not park in the carpool area. • Please do not use the bus lane in front of the school to drop-off or pick-up campers. • Only those people authorized on the enrollment form will be allowed to pick up campers. • Pick-up changes must be in writing (note or email) and forwarded to the summer camp office by 12:00pm. • Afternoon pick-up runs from 3:00-3:15pm. Campers not picked up by 3:15pm will be taken to the camp office. A late fee of $25 is incurred if picking up after 3:30pm. • Please display the Carpool Pick-up Pass on page 35 on the passenger side dashboard to help expedite pick-up. Non-Village School families should have ID ready at pick-up.

Medications at Camp All prescription and non-prescription medications brought to camp must have a medication authorization form completed by a parent and doctor. Please see camp office or the summer camp page at www.village-school.org to obtain an authorization form. Snack and Lunch We recommend that each camper bring a morning and afternoon snack to enjoy during each recess. Students may participate in the daily lunch program or bring their own sack lunch from home. (optional catered lunch, see page 30) Don’t forget a bottle of water for snack and lunch. Sun Block Please apply sun block before arriving to camp. A hat and extra sun block may be brought to camp in camper’s backpack. Personal Belongings Please label all bags, bottles, towels, hats, and sweatshirts with camper’s name. Use of electronic devices including cell phones are not permitted. We are not responsible for lost items. Early Pick-Up & Late Arrival Please come to the summer camp office to sign your camper in or out when picking up early or arriving late. *Camp Closed July 4-5.

Summer Online Academy: Math • Session 1: June 17-July 5 • Session 2: August 12-August 30 (The same content will be offered both sessions)

Fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students are invited to participate in our Summer Online Academy math course covering key concepts that correlate with our Everyday Math curriculum. The selected concepts are ones that our teachers find to be especially important for success in math. The Summer Online Academy math courses have been designed to offer a refresher prior to returning to Village in September or as an opportunity to jumpstart for the upcoming year. Course Features •

TK Camp & Kinder Camp Open to Village School students entering TK and Kindergarten in the Fall. TKers and Kindergartners‌start the summer off with exploration! Students will learn about Village School and make new friends with Mrs. Reilly & Mrs. Morris. The day will be filled with exciting activities relating to ladybugs, the 4th of July, the alphabet, Dr. Seuss, and fascinating dinosaurs! Students will be engaged in projects that will have them reading, writing, cooking, hunting for ladybugs in the Learning Garden, creating fabulous art work and even digging for dinosaur bones in the Village School sandbox! This is an extraordinary opportunity for our youngest students to begin their transition to Village School by meeting their new teachers and friends. Please have your chid bring a snack and backpack to camp each day. Also, in case of accidents or messy spills please pack a change of clothes (top, bottom, underwear, socks) for your child. Place items in a zip lock bag labeled with your child’s name. We will keep the clothes in the classroom while your child is in camp.

Viking Pre-Season Clinics Grades 4-6 Viking Boys & Girls Basketball Clinic Get a head start on your fall sports training. This skill-intensive clinic focuses on fundamentals of the game, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Each day will consist of work emphasizing ball handling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and moving with and without the ball. Each player will be placed on a 5-on-5 team and will participate in daily scrimmages. Players will put their skills in action during our playoffs on the last day of camp. Viking Girls Volleyball Clinic This clinic is designed for girls of all skill levels. Players will be instructed in the fundamentals as well as the rules and strategies of the game. Focus will be on exercises that focus on passing, setting, hitting, and serving. Players will participate in competitive and non-competitive activities designed to improve technique and confidence. Viking Boys Flag Football Clinic This flag football clinic focuses on the core skills of passing, catching, de-flagging and defensive positioning. This is a non-contact clinic designed for players with experience as well as players new to the game. Emphasis is placed on teamwork, sportsmanship, and game strategy. Animal Encounters provides a hands-on class with live, kid-friendly animals. Campers will pet, feed, and learn about each animal they meet. Campers will learn through stories, games, and related arts & craft projects. We have over 300 animals, so you never know what we’ll bring. Come meet your new animal friends! Take your LEGOS skills to the next level as our Robotics Instructors (aka “Commanders”) teach you about engineering, physics and computer programming through LEGOS Mindstorm technology. Campers will work as a team to build moving robots with gears, motors and sensors and learn about computer programming. Become a SECRET AGENT and battle the evil Professor Snotrocket before he takes over Village School…and the world! Note: Each session of camp will feature all new robots. Parkour & Freerunning Grades 2-6

With parkour, you will learn how to jump, roll, vault, and climb over obstacles just like all your favorite super heroes, only safer. Parkour is a growing sport dedicated to teach kids how to get from point A to point B the most efficiently. Learn the ways of spiderman, batman, wonder woman and many more. Art Studio Grades 2-6 If you enjoy expressing yourself through art and love being creative, Art Studio is the place for you. You will make everything from paintings, sculptures, drawings and more. Session June 26 -June 28 Academic Skills Sharpening Grades 2-6 This class is designed to help students who need reinforcement in writing, reading comprehension, and math for the next grade level they will enter in the fall. The students will be assessed in reading comprehension at the start of the session, and a program will be designed to meet their needs at their appropriate reading comprehension level. Each day the students will focus on reading comprehension (specifically in drawing conclusions), finding their own writing voice, math facts practice, and playing math games. Students enrolling in a second week will begin working on writing paragraphs and will delve further into reading comprehension strategies. Students enrolled for 3-5 weeks will develop a better understanding of essay writing, as well as explore other areas of reading comprehension such as making inferences and finding cause and effect. Students will play math games that develop their understanding of math, word problems, and their problem solving skills. Class is taught in both large and small groups. In addition, each student will have one-on-one time with Mrs. Welsh every week. Consecutive weeks are recommended. Professor Egghead Science Academy Grades K-3

Professor Egghead has been busy all year cooking up experiments in his laboratory and now he’s finally coming back to Village Summer Camp! Join the Professor as he mixes potions, travels to Planet Egg in his crazy rocket ship, and explains all the mysteries of science. Hands-on classes teach science in an innovative way and feature concepts that relate to national science standards. Each day focuses on a specific theme and features experiments that are guaranteed to captivate the attention of any aspiring young scientist. Come learn science the fun way with Professor Egghead! Come join Señora O. for an opportunity to learn practical and fun Spanish vocabulary. Students will practice language while exploring culture, literature, art, games, and food. Camp participants will receive a passport where they will stamp and record what they have learned as they travel through various Spanish speaking countries. Sensational Sushi

Grades 1-6

Study the food and culture of Japan through sushi! You will not only learn how to make California, cucumber, and hand rolls, potstickers, and miso soup, you will also learn how to set a table for sushi, count and write to ten in Japanese, and even learn how to write your name in Japanese! Come learn the history of sushi, how to order sushi in Japanese, and even play games related to sushi and the Japanese culture. Waterpalooza

Grades 1-6

Nothing says summer like water and sunshine. Our time will be split between swimming at the Palisades High School Aquatics Center and playing games at Village School that involve H20 such as water balloon relays, sponge races, capture the water balloon, duck-duck-squirt and Obsta-Cool course relays! On the last day of camp you’ll enjoy sliding down the 18-foot double water slide. Bring your swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, rubber sole shoes that can get wet, and a hat each day and get ready to get WET! Note: Students should feel confident and comfortable in a pool. Let’s celebrate the 4th of July with your favorite American sports. We’ll play basketball, baseball, golf, flag games, and relay races that will get your heart pumping with excitement! It’s a party everyday for GIRLS ONLY in this class! Each day will include a different theme where you’ll get to dress-up, wear glitter make-up, learn dance routines, sing songs and play games. Spend your summer at the most awesome skateboarding camp in L.A.! This camp is for skateboarders of all levels. Campers will get quality individual and group instruction from our amazing skateboard professionals. From novice to more experienced skaters, we instill the core fundamentals of skateboarding including proper stance, correct pushing/foot placement, kick-turns, carving, ollies, and a lot more. More experienced skaters will get the proper instruction to make them even better skaters. Get the chance to put your creativity to work by designing and building your very own wooden fingerboard skate park! Grab your boards and let’s roll! Protective equipment is required to skate and will be provided or bring your own elbow/knee/wrist pads and helmet from home. You can also bring your skateboard from home or borrow one from us. Instructor: STAR Education® Class Limit: 15 Fee: $170 (includes a fingerboard skate park for each camper to keep)

Do you have school spirit? This is a combination cheerleading and dance class for those that want to learn new cheers, sideline dance routines, arm techniques, jumps, pom routines, and meet new friends. Emerse yourself in crytography and sharpen your detective skills in Crypto Club this summer! Become an expert in cryptography by learning to crack secret codes and ciphers while simultaneously sharpening math skills. The Crypto Club will present a number of different systems of encryption and methods of breaking them. This is a great way to practice math skills and have fun at the same time.
