he population of 19,709 residents appreciates a unique lifestyle within a beautiful village that makes this community unlike any other in the area. The village remains progressive in order to ensure it’s meeting the needs of the evolving population, implementing a range of measures over the past few years in the downtown area. The Lake Zurich area offers small-town charm with surrounding lakes, forest preserves and parks, as well as a close proximity to Chicago.

16 | Lake Zurich Area Lifestyle Magazine™

The village is home to award-winning schools and stretching acres of preserved land, even high-quality shopping and a diversified real estate market. Lake Zurich has become a real gem of northwest Illinois with its overall livability, family oriented entertainment and reasonable cost of living. The area was a contender for Money magazine’s “Best Places to Live” in 2011 and in 2006 Frommer’s, a publisher of travel books and magazines, named Lake Zurich among the top 100 best places to raise a family in the U.S. In the same year U.S. News & World Report ranked it as one

of the “Top 25 Affordable Places to Live in the Country.” Growing families, young entrepreneurs, business executives, retirees and everything in between can all find the right home, right here in Lake Zurich. Virtually every size home, style and price range can be found here. Old and new homes blend seamlessly together as they are located in well-established neighborhoods, each of them having their own characteristic and charm that is as unique as the people that live in them.

There are many draws to life in Lake Zurich. One of the main attractions is the area itself, which spans over 250 beautiful acres. Some subdivisions have lake rights complete with piers, provided by the associations, for residents’ boats. Pride in these communities can be seen yearlong as some maintain their own websites and even assemble a unit to march in the annual Alpine Fest Parade.

Neighborhoods here really fit the classic description: they provide a safe, homey place to reside, raise a family and even retire.

businesses. With great schools and a family friendly town it would be hard for anyone to leave. A strong school system, strong village governments and residents who care about the community prove there is no place like Lake Zurich. Now has never been a better time to discover the benefits of life in the Lake Zurich area!

Through past economic hardship the village has continued to prosper. With low retail vacancy rates the community has remained resourceful and creative at attracting new businesses to the area, as well as keeping an eclectic mix of current

Mainstreet Art Centre 20 E. Main St., Lake Zurich, IL 60047 847-550-0016 Frankie Johnson / Director They come from Rockford, Lake Geneva, Hoffman Estates, Buffalo Grove, Northbrook and Chicago. They are school teachers, housewives, lawyers and physicians, but all have at least one thing in common. They love art. Mainstreet Art Centre has recently moved into a larger location, just right next door. Not only is the new space larger, but there is also an added third classroom to accommodate the children on wait lists.

Another teacher has been hired and several teachers were happy to take on more classes. The office staff is extremely helpful and accommodating in every way. It’s a great team. Director Frankie Johnson began her career at a young age and continued to study at the Art Institute and the Palette & Chisel in Chicago and Harper College in Palatine. Her years of study with wellknown painters from around the world have been the best education of all. Johnson has won numerous national awards and her paintings hang throughout the country. She is represented by the Champeau Pioneer

Gallery and The Paint Box Gallery in Door County, Wisconsin. The Mainstreet Art Centre is one of only a handful of independent art schools in the area, and the Studio employs locally and nationally recognized teachers to instruct in an encouraging environment. long run. The more of a foundation students have to work with, the more they are able to explore a variety of painting styles and techniques. Frankie has created a stimulating environment while focusing on creating fine art. The atmosphere is supportive, caring, professional and fun. The studio offers 35 classes weekly, including all levels of drawing, oil painting, watercolor and pastels for adults, teens and children, starting at age six. Art supplies and ready-made frames are available for sale at the studio. Eight other teachers round out the instruction team, Ardes MacFarlane, Karen Sako, Linda Lukachik, Ann Feldman, Susan Ploughe, Jan Oswald, Barb Benstein and Tracy Albert. All instructors are award-winning professionals and give the highest quality of art instruction in the area. We find learning so exciting, we love to share it. That is why we teach. Mainstreet offers several special workshops each year, with nationally prominent artists. They come to share their expertise and continue to inspire the students. Johnson carefully selects the visiting artists, ensuring there is

something for everyone. Experts in portrait painting, pastels, watercolors, plein air, still life, mixed media and figure painting are included. The opportunities are endless in which to develop as quickly as you desire with some of the best painters in the country. Mainstreet also has different outings and class projects to stimulate growth. In addition to always having available still life setups, twice a month the studio provides a live model and uninstructed studio time. There are also student/teacher art shows periodically to display what has been created. Adult classes are two and a half hours and run for eight week sessions at the cost of $165. Teens are $150 for two-hour sessions that run for eight weeks. Various times are offered for younger children. We continue to bring plenty of activity into the downtown of Lake Zurich where art is supported and continues to flourish. The Mainstreet Art Centre is at 20 E. Main St. in Lake Zurich. ith a prime location in Chicago’s northwest suburbs, access to main roads and a large, diverse community, businesses in the Lake Zurich area are booming. Like with every community there has been some downturn because of the economy, but over the past few years, things are moving back up! In March of 2002 the village of Lake Zurich created a Tax Increment

Financing, a financial tool that is used to assist a municipality in the redevelopment of a specific area in the village until December 2025. The village of Lake Zurich has created a 70-acre area in the middle of downtown is intended to facilitate the preparation of vacant and underutilized sites for new retail, commercial and residential development as well as off-street parking. The area is located within the downtown redevelopment area, and is also designed to re-establish

the downtown as a vibrant mixeduse area, and strengthen the economic well-being and quality of life in the downtown area as well as the entire village. All of these amenities will be helpful to draw new businesses to the Lake Zurich area as well as keep already established business strong. The Village of Lake Zurich Board of Trustees and staff continue to work with interested developers to finalize a detailed redevelopment plan.

Cedar Lake Assisted Living & Memory Care Downsize and Upgrade: Assisted Living and Memory Care in Lake Zurich’s Newest Senior Community The decision to downsize from a large singlefamily home to an assisted living community has many an upside, if the decision includes Spectrum Retirement’s newest community, Cedar Lake Assisted Living & Memory Care. Like a fine hotel operated by a staff of caring family members, Cedar Lake’s expert team delivers personal and medical care in an environment that promotes independence, dignity, privacy and choice. Residents pay only for the services they might need while enjoying the many amenities offered by the community. Imagine casual and fine dining chefs that cater to special requests, activity directors that plan classes to benefit each resident’s body and mind, neighbors gathering for games and conversation, spa services and more – all in an environment that supports optimum health and independence. Cedar Lake Assisted Living & Memory Care boasts two stories of luxurious, yet affordable, senior living, located in southwestern Lake County approximately 37 miles from downtown Chicago. In the heart of Lake Zurich, Cedar Lake incorporates the blend of small-town charm with numerous golf courses, nature preserves and parks surrounding the Cedar Lake community. More convenient, however, are the nearby wellness center and home-health agency, and local retailers including movie theaters, boutiques, restaurants and more; all within the Lake Zurich community. We’ve also worked hard to keep with the small-town sociability, so more than 45 percent of the building is dedicated to common areas and living spaces.

The new community offers 62 Assisted Living residences, along with a Memory Care wing with 24 residences. Services are provided by Cedar Lake’s expert staff who are trained to help with simple responsibilities such as dayto-day tasks that can get in the way of enjoying retirement, to highly specialized care that targets the specific needs of those with Alzheimer's and various types and levels of dementia. Cedar Lake offers an alternative advanced memory care program called the Path to the Presentsm which offers positive and effective care at multiple levels of support, allowing individuals to maintain dignity and a level of self-confidence. “We are a resident-centered company, and strive to offer the support and care that helps our residents thrive,” said Spectrum Retirement VP of Resident Care, Carole Hull. “Our transitional memory care program allows those experiencing mild cognitive impairment to continue living in their own space or with a spouse, with a little extra support.” All this at an affordable price? Of course. Assisted living apartments ranging in size from studio suites to two-bedroom, twobath, 878-square-foot apartments, are available through a month-to-month rental program, with no buy-in fee required – and all Cedar Lake’s programs and amenities are included. Even better? Pets are always welcome at Cedar Lake Assisted Living & Memory Care. Opening in March 2014, planning that difficult decision to move has never been easier. Join the many new residents enjoying fireplace lounges, outdoor gardening areas, well-appointed apartments, trips and programs, all with the expert care you desire. We’ll even help you move in.
