What’s Happening at Recreation? Winter/Spring 2014 It’s hard to believe we’re bidding farewell to another year. We’ve had a grand time this past season providing events and programs. Our success is attributed not only to the programs, classes, fitness center, and special events, but also to our residents and participants. We couldn’t do it without you! October was a busy time for us. We had yet another grand Autumn Colors Craft Show that month. This event draws in 100 vendors with all sorts of merchandise. Items such as crafts, candles, clothing, jewelry, household décor, toys, artwork, etc., was available to purchase. You name it, we probably had it. What a great way for all to get a jump on their holiday shopping! One of our biggest events is our annual Halloween Fest, which was also held in October. Aside from trick-or-treating for candy, there were crafts, entertainers, moon jumps, costume contests, and more! This spine-tingling evening is one of our most attended events. We love putting this together! We hope that you and your family ended 2013 with good tidings. Our Annual Winter Wonderland event in December was also a great success and helped us end the year with good cheer. This event was put on in conjunction with Fat Ricky’s and we thank them for their generous support and participation. Winter Wonderland was also coupled with the Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Parade of Lights. Not only were children able to enjoy these events, but there were also entertainers, carolers, inflatables, a book fair, and an opportunity to make some holiday crafts. Most exciting, however, was a visit from good ol’ St. Nick. Children were able to get a photo with Santa to take home as a souvenir. As you may have read, we have installed a Thor-Guard System, which detects the potential for lightning in the area. This system has been placed at Village Park, Volunteer Park, Wesglen Park and Century Park, and will notify participants on the playing field of the threat of lightning. If such a threat occurs, a 15-second outdoor horn will blast to warn those outdoors to seek shelter immediately. A strobe light will also begin flashing inside the Recreation Center near the reception area, as well as on the sensor-poles at the park locations listed above. When danger of lightning no longer exists, an outdoor horn will blast three times for five-seconds and the inside strobe light will cease. These measures have been taken to protect those on the playing fields during inclement weather. Our renovation of Village Park is anticipated to be completed by early spring. The improvements under way have provided new playground equipment, pour-in-place rubber surfacing, concrete repairs, extension of the trail to the Recreation Center, new bleachers, signage and additional landscaping. This is sure to become another hot-spot for you and your children. As we bid farewell to another year, we welcome the opportunity to provide you with plenty of activities and programs for 2014. And don’t forget, if your little one has a birthday coming up, check out our Jungle Gym, Party Chefs, Gymnastics, Dance, and Sports-n-Games party packages. Hope to see you soon! Not all hazards and dangers can be foreseen. Participants and parents/guardians of minor participants must understand that certain risks and hazards will be inherent to participation in that activity, including but not limited to risks and hazards associated with inclement weather, slip and falls, overexertion and fatigue, disregarding safety rules and instructions, collision with stationary objects or other participants, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, premises defects, inadequate or defective equipment, inadequate supervision, instruction or officiating. In the event that I or anyone else nonetheless makes a claim or files suit against Releasees arising out of any of the above-described matters, I will indemnify and hold Releasees harmless of and from any and all damages or judgments and costs of litigation, including attorney fees. The provisions hereof are to be construed as broadly as possible in favor of Releasees, and this Agreement as a whole shall be governed by the laws of the State of Illinois (without reference to the conflicts of laws rules thereof ). Insurance:

Fees may be paid by cash, check, Visa, Discover, or MasterCard at the time of registration. All monies are immediately deposited.

The Romeoville Recreation Department carries no medical insurance and assumes no liability for personal injuries or loss of personal property while attending Recreation Department activities. A participant’s own policy must cover any medical costs incurred.

Returned Checks: If a check is returned unpaid, there is a $35 insufficient check fee in addition to the original amount of the check payable by cash or money order within 10 days. Failure to do so in the specified time will result in turning the check over to the police department for further action.

Program Cancellation: If the program is canceled due to insufficient registration, a full refund will be made through the Village within seven (7) to fifteen (15) working days.

Class Cancellation: If a class is canceled during the program, participants will be notified of the make up date by phone, in writing through a hand-out at class, or through the mail.

Refund Policy: Refunds are issued as follows - 100% before the start of week one; 75% before the start of week two; 50% before the start of week three; 25% before the start of week four; and NO REFUND after week four. Refunds will be issued in 30 to 60 days.

Age Criteria Policy: Appropriate age levels have been established by our supervisors to ensure a rewarding experience for all children. Children must meet the age requirements of a class within two weeks after the starting date of the class (with the exception of Creative Play). Noncompliance with age requirements can result in removal from the program. The Recreation Department reserves the right to request a birth certificate if the age of the child is in question.

Toilet Training Policy: Children enrolled in a Romeoville Recreation Department program for ages 3 and older must be toilet trained unless it is a parent/toddler class. Recreation Department programs stress the importance of children practicing their independence and we do not aid children in the bathroom. Our instructors are not responsible for diaper changing or toilet training. The Recreation Department reserves the right to deny participation by a child age 3 or older if they are not toilet trained.

We Love Parents But... With your child’s best interest in mind, parents are invited to their child’s last class meeting only. Our instructors always welcome the opportunity to discuss a participant’s progress with parents at any time. Thank you for your cooperation.

Inclusion Aides: Tri County Special Recreation Association provides qualified staff to help assist the Romeoville Recreation Department’s community recreation leaders in providing recreational programs for children and adults with special needs in a safe environment. Inclusion aides assist participants with activities provided through the Recreation Department and with any accommodations needed to make sure it is an optimal experience for participants. If your child needs assistance in a program, please mention this on your registration form or upon registration. We do our best to provide inclusion aides for all requests; however, from time to time an aide may not be available because of the class time or day.

Program Enrollment Policy: All programs have minimum and maximum enrollments. If the minimum enrollment has not been reached by the stated deadline, the Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or consolidate the program with another. If a program is canceled, full refunds will be issued.

Behavior Policy: Participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times. The following guidelines have been developed to help make the Recreation Department safe and enjoyable for all participants. Participants shall: 1) show respect to all participants and staff; 2) refrain from using foul language; 3) refrain from causing bodily harm to another participant or staff; 4) show respect for equipment, supplies and facilities.

Resident Rate Passes are good for one year from the date of issue. These passes are eligible for all recreation classes; they do not apply to the Birthday Party Packages, Open Gym, child care, Fit 4 Life, or rentals.

Thor-Guard Lightning Prediction System The Village of Romeoville has installed a Thor-Guard Lightning Prediction System, which detects the potential for lightning in the area. This system has been placed at Village Park, Volunteer Park, Wesglen Park and Century Park, and will notify participants on the playing field of the threat of lightning. If such a threat occurs, a 15-second outdoor horn will blast to warn those outdoors to seek shelter immediately. A strobe light will also begin flashing inside the Recreation Center near the reception area, as well as on the sensor-poles at park locations listed above. When danger of lightning no longer exists, an outdoor horn will blast three times for five-seconds and all of the strobe lights will cease. These measures have been taken to protect those on the playing fields during inclement weather. This system will be active from 8am until 10pm for the parks that have lighted sport fields. For the parks that do not have lighted sport fields they will shut off at 8:00pm.

Components of Fitness To improve your overall fitness, it is important to have a balance of the five components of fitness. These components are:

1. 1 Cardio-Respiratory Endurance: The ability to do moderately strenuous activity over a period of time. It reflects how well your heart and lungs work together to supply oxygen to your body during exertion and exercise.

2. 2 Muscular Strength: The ability to exert maximum force, one time. An example would be a one time lift of the heaviest weight you can manage.

3. 3 Muscular Endurance: The ability of a muscle or muscle group to repeat a movement many times or to hold a particular position for an extended period of time.

4. 4 Flexibility: The degree to which individual muscles will lengthen and the ability to move a joint through its full range of motion.

5. 5 Body Composition: The proportion of fat in the body compared to the amount of lean mass. Each group fitness program is labeled with the components it strengthens. Multiple components may apply to individual classes, or they may only have one. Sign up for all the different components to get a complete workout!

R E C R E A T I O N

The Romeoville Tumbleweed’s program goal is to provide an opportunity for gymnasts to learn, grow, develop, and mature into an outstanding young adult. Gymnasts that are a part of the Tumbleweeds team will learn to work hard, set and achieve goals, work well with others, take initiative, and work through frustrations and setbacks. The Tumbleweeds team also promotes and encourages confidence to achieve anything they put their minds to. With that said, the utmost priority is to provide and incredible gymnastics experience for each gymnast. We make this happen because the gymnasts, parents, family, and coaches work together as a team. Being a part of the Romeoville Tumbleweeds is a lot of fun and very rewarding; however, it requires a huge commitment from both the gymnast and her family. If your child makes the team after tryouts, commitment includes year-round practices and meets during her respective competition season(s). Time management skills are a necessity to be a part of the team. All gymnasts are expected to attend all practices, meets, performances, and events. Please contact Marissa Cardoni at (815)886-6222 or mcardoni@romeoville.org for more information.
