SENIOR AND DISABLED SNOW PLOWING PROGRAM

The Village of Bensenville is pleased to announce a new program to our seniors and disabled residents. Beginning this winter, we will be offering a Senior / Disabled Snow Removal Program. The program is designed to help those in our community who need assistance to obtain a low cost solution to snow removal on their driveways, sidewalks, and private walks. The Village will hire independent contractors to provide discounted rates for common snow removal services. The Village will also subsidize a portion of the cost.

The Public Works Department will administer the program. Snow plowing of driveways and shoveling of sidewalks will occur after three (3”) inches or more of snow has fallen. Snow removal will not begin until a snow event is completed (i.e. the snow has stopped falling). In the event of excessive snowfall (typically greater than six (6”) inches), the independent contractors may be instructed to perform multiple visits. The Village will charge the participant for each visit made to the property. Timing of snow removal will depend on the snow event, but our goal would be to have all snow removal completed by 10am on any given day.

The Getting Around Illinois Map, is updated 24/7 during winter weather, providing motorists with the latest information on what to expect before heading out on IDOT-maintained roadways.

Visit IDOT’s YouTube channel to watch our new video that shows how the data for the map is collected and passed along in simple red, yellow and green colors to give Illinois drivers the information they need this winter.

Help Keep Snow off The Streets Permission for overnight parking on Village streets will not be granted after a snowfall of two inches (2”) or more. In order to ensure effective plowing and salting operations it is imperative vehicles are not parked on Village streets or in alleys. Alley parking is prohibited at any time.

Please do not park or keep a vehicle on public streets after a (2”) or more snowfall for twenty four (24) hours, or until the streets have been cleared of snow. Vehicles in violation will be ticketed and towed. Snow plowing or dumping snow from sidewalks and driveways onto the public streets or public alleyways is prohibited. Violation is a petty offense.

Bensenville residents 55 years old and over are invited to enjoy a Holiday Party Luncheon on Tuesday, December 5 at Monty’s Banquet Hall, 703 South York Road. Doors open at 10 am, lunch and festivities begin at 11 am. Register in advance by purchasing tickets at the Village Hall Finance Counter, $10 for incorporated Bensenville residents and $25 for non-residents. At the time of registration, you will have your choice of a New York Strip steak or Baked Tilapia. Seating is limited. Registration is required. Tickets will not be sold at the door. NEW ICE AT THE EDGE ICE ARENA THIS WINTER! MinorHawks Hockey

• The Minorhawks Pre-Hockey/Learn to Skate classes begin on Saturday, October 28 or Wednesday, November 1. This program is for ages between 4-12 years old and the cost is $88. All players receive a Blackhawks practice jersey. No experience necessary. Please contact the Edge Ice Arena at (630) 766-8888.

• The MinorHawks Developmental Hockey league is for players who do not have any prior league experience.

It is recommended that they have completed a learn to play hockey class before registering for this program.

BENSENVILLE TOY AND COAT DRIVE

The holidays should be a festive time filled with great joy. Unfortunately, many families struggle to pay bills and put food on the table, gifts under the tree and a warm coat are often luxuries. To lend a hand to those in our community who need it most, Bensenville will host a Village Toy and Coat Drive and the Bensenville Rotary Club Coat Drive, both beginning in early November. Donations of new, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items, gently worn adult and child-sized cold weather coats, hats, scarfs and mittens will be collected throughout the village.

Donations of cash are also welcome. Collection Boxes are located throughout the Village including Village Hall, Bensenville Theatre, Bensenville Library, Bensenville Park District, Fenton High School, District 2 Schools and many local businesses. Winter Holiday Home Decorating Contest Gather all your holiday lights, reindeer, wreaths and decorations, for the annual holiday home decorating contest. Incorporated Bensenville Residents are encouraged to nominate your home or business by emailing the property address, name, email or phone and picture to holidaycontest@ bensenville.il.us. The nomination period is November 10th through December 10th.

Submitted properties will be posted to the Village’s Facebook page. Winners will be announced at the December 12th Village Board Meeting and posted to the Village’s website at www.bensenville.il.us.

Ms. Lazan’s message of courage, hope, compassion and tolerance will be shared with students at Blackhawk Middle School and Fenton High School, with support from the Bensenville Community Foundation and the Bensenville Arts Council. Darin Lux, sophomore at Fenton HS, was one of 30 girls chosen in Illinois to participate in the ComEd Ice Box Derby. They were chosen based on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) essay questions for the chance to earn scholarship money for college. She has participated in STEM summer programs and coding camps while she was at Blackhawk.

Beginning in July, teams of 5 girls attended build sessions in Chicago where they took an actual recycled refrigerator and turned it into a working electrical vehicle. The days involved learning new skills and applying them to the build and a challenge against other teams. They were supported by mentors who work for ComEd to help them with the skills to complete the vehicle. Some of these mentors had been interns before their hiring, Darin was interviewed on the WGN Midday News and demonstrated a vehicle. While there she met several on air personalities and was given a tour of the Weather Center, as she was one of those responsible for the Bensenville School District getting its own WeatherBug station.

The grand finale was held at Daley Plaza in Chicago where the six teams competed. They were greeted by the CEO of ComEd. The mentors helped in the pits as each member of the team was given a chance to race around the track in the individual heats before the final. All girls were awarded scholarship money, medals and awards. It was a memorable occasion and an opportunity for girls looking for input before making decisions on their future college and career choices.

On August 30, 2017, Dr. Josh Emmett, Division Leader of World Languages, ESL, English, and Social Studies and Kyra Behnke, French and ESL teacher, presented the Board of Education with information about the Seal of Biliteracy award. World Language and ESL staff are interested in promoting this program with students at Fenton High School. The Illinois Seal of Biliteracy is an award bestowed by the Illinois State Board of Education and given by Fenton High School in recognition and celebration of students who have studied and attained a high level of proficiency in two or more languages by graduation. This means that the students have learned to read, write, listen and speak in both languages in a variety of contexts. The tasks on the assessment are interpersonal (speaking or writing to another person), presentational (writing or speaking about a topic) and interpretive (reading or listening to a text and showing comprehension).

The state of Illinois officially adopted the Seal of Biliteracy in 2013, and Fenton has identified nearly 40 students who could be honored with this award at the 2018 graduation. This achievement will be acknowledged on student transcripts and diplomas.

Rationale for the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy - The Illinois State Board of Education and Fenton High School recognize the importance of language and how it helps prepare students for global citizenship. Not only is learning a language beneficial to students’ cognitive development, it also provides opportunities for them to participate effectively in global political, social, cultural and economic contexts. Further, the demand for employees to be fluent in more than one language is increasing rapidly in Illinois and throughout the world. The Seal of Biliteracy builds upon the rich linguistic and cultural assets of the district and community, providing students with the necessary skills to be successful in college, career, and life.

COMMUNITY CERAMIC TOTEM POLE Fenton High School Art Teacher JoAnna Rieger received a grant from the Bensenville Art Council to create a ceramic totem that will be installed outside the football field/art patio and is offering a hands on community art experience. The purpose of this project is to unite our community, provide wellness, and allow for positive expression through art.

Volunteers will be guided in the planning and creating of a permanent sculpture to be installed outside the Fenton High School track and field.

This artwork will welcome many for years to come. Three handcrafted ceramic totems, known as Welcome Poles, will be the final outcome.

Students, FHS staff, and community members of all ages are invited to join this free art experience. Ages 8 and under are required to work with a partner 16 or older. All sessions will take place in Fenton’s new 3-D art room on the last Thursday of each month. You are asked to commit to the entire session signed up for. The first session will involve planning the theme of the sculpture. Four 3-hour hands on sessions will be offered to create the totem segments. Hands on sessions are limited to 24 participants.

FENTON CLASS OF 1977 DONATES $700 TO SUPPORT FENTON ATHLETIC BOOSTERS. Members of the Class of 1977 held their 40th reunion during Homecoming weekend. Following a tour of the school some attended the football game. Saturday evening they held a dinner event where alumni donated to support the Athletic Booster program. ALL money raised by the boosters goes back to the students; either in the form of Senior Scholarships or Coach Wish List requests.

BENSENVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT 2 District 2 dedicates Tioga School’s gymnasium to memory of Thomas DeMauro More than 450 people packed Tioga School’s gymnasium on October 5 to celebrate the life of Thomas P. DeMauro, and honor his lasting impact on the school and the Bensenville community by dedicating the gym to his memory.

A lifelong Bensenville resident, Mr. DeMauro and his 21-year-old son Kyle were among six killed in a tragic July 1 plane crash in northern Wisconsin. Mr. DeMauro was a physical education in District 2 for 31 years. He taught at Tioga, Chippewa, and Blackhawk.

Dedicating Tioga’s gym to Mr. DeMauro honors the enduring impact of his teaching career and keeps his legacy alive in the community, said longtime friend Ken Gardner.

¡HERENCIA HISPANA! District 2 Schools Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month Hispanic Heritage Month ran from September 15 to October 15, and was celebrated in a variety of ways across District 2.

during the school day to lead each classroom in arts activities that celebrated Hispanic Heritage, and to stage folkloric dance performances for the students.

At Blackhawk Middle School, students of herencia hispana (hispanic heritage) spoke during the morning announcements each Monday for the month of celebration. They shared a short biography and quotes of inspiration from famed painter Frida Kahlo, U.S. labor leader and civil rights activist Cesar Chavez, Mexican soccer star Hugo Sanchez Marquez, and world-renowned Brazilian author Paulo Coehlo.

The District also partnered with Bensenville Community Public Library to bring local Spanishlanguage children’s author and storyteller R.C. Ontiveros to town for a special Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Ontiveros’ shared his recent book, La Bruja Que No Fue A La Escuela (The Witch Who Never Went to School), and District 2 presented 100 copies of the book to families that attended the celebration.

Deanna Berardi, the STEM Lab teacher at Blackhawk Middle School, was recognized this fall with an “Award of Special Recognition” in the Illinois State Board of Education’s (ISBE) prestigious “Those Who Excel” Education Awards Program. She was nominated for this honor by Roberta Murphy, an eighth-grade science teacher at Blackhawk Middle School and Co-President of the Bensenville Education Association.

“Deanna never stops learning and looking for ways to improve her curriculum,” said Mrs. Murphy.

“Each year for the past nine years, she has altered or completely overhauled her lessons, units, and assessments, all in an effort to stay up to date with new standards and technology that will keep her students engaged and thinking critically.”

ISBE also presented an “Award of Special Recognition” to District 2’s Project CARE Facilitator Team, which is led by longtime CARE participants Lara Schwarz, the program’s coordinator, and school-level facilitators Sue Vitale, Lisa Simoncelli, and Laura Butz. They were nominated for this honor

Keep the Wreath Red As the holiday season begins, you will notice a large holiday wreath on the front of the Bensenville Fire Protection District stations.

Each of the wreaths will be decorated with large red bulbs that will be illuminated during the holiday season. Should a fire occur during the holiday season that is determined to have been directly caused by a holiday decoration, a white bulb will replace the red bulb.

The idea is for the residents of the Bensenville Fire Protection District to be exceptionally safety conscious during the holiday season.
