The Power of Flowers W I T H H ARR Y PAN f rom FLOWER V IL L AG E

Whether you’re hosting a humble backyard barbecue or an extravagant Spring party, no tablescape is complete without a stunning floral arrangement. Luckily, the team at Flower Village has plenty of tips to help you get the perfect bunch. “The Spring season calls for bright florals; a pop of yellow works well with softer pinks and whites,” Harry says. “Mix up the texture as well. Pairing two or three heavier flowers with a softer filler and some green foliage adds depth.” “Make sure you trim the ends of your flowers, about an inch works best,” says Harry, on caring for your florals. “This helps them absorb water and last as long as possible.” Flower Village Level 1, 9488 7838

a flair for fashion Director of Designer Forum, Olivia Zarantonello, has taken the concept of working your way up to a whole new level

Olivia’s journey with Designer Forum started around six years ago after several fashion intern roles and studying a fashion business course at FBI Fashion College. Within a short space of time she found herself working at the head office alongside Karen Young, the founder and former director, as the operations manager. “I’ve always loved fashion, being able to pick out those unusual items and throw them together in a cool outfit. My friends and family loved it when I shopped with them so owning my own store one day was always a goal,” Olivia says. “But I didn’t expect to be in a position where I gained four stores at once!” she continues. “When Karen decided to sell the business in 2014, it was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss.” From a brand and product perspective, Olivia is bringing some exciting new ranges to the St Ives store, with Alex Perry introduced in August, and Rebecca Vallance arriving in October.

“I wanted to bring back formal wear to the stores, and these two brands will offer our customers lots of glamour and style for the party season. A lot of our customers, especially in St Ives, are looking for those special one-off pieces.” As for Olivia herself, her favourite brands are Viktoria & Woods for perfect party accessories and Bec & Bridge. “Both brands suit my personal style so well – Viktoria & Woods for their effortless daytime chic, and Bec & Bridge for their fun, night party dresses. If something isn’t comfortable, I won’t wear it, and both brands are so wearable.” Designer Forum has always been known for the fashion knowledge that its staff members have, and it shows. “All our staff receive ongoing training so we can give our customers the one-on-one experience they have come to expect from us, which is genuine advice rather than pushing to sell product.”

How to pick the Purr-fect pet w o r d s by karen porter

As we head towards the tail end of the year, it’s common to think about adding a furry, feathered or scaly member to the family. After all, we are one of the world leaders when it comes to “fur babies”, with more than 62 per cent of Australian households owning at least one pet. But before you get started, here are a few essentials to think about before you commit to purchasing that pet. The obvious pet choices are cats and dogs, but it’s essential to select a pet that suits your family’s lifestyle and makes everyone happy. A smaller animal, such as a guinea pig or rabbit, may be a better option for busy families with limited space.

“If you rarely spend time at home, then a dog that needs a lot of attention and exercise is probably not the right option for you,” says Edwina Hall, co-owner of Purr-fect Pets. “You really need to do your research and have a family meeting. Everyone should be on the same page and know what’s expected, so that there are no surprises.” Google is a great place to start your research, provided the sites you visit present a reputable source of information. Once you have the background information, you’ll then know the right questions to ask your vet or pet store.

“Allowing your pet to get used to the new environment slowly is important” 20

If you have family members with allergies, selecting low or nonallergenic pets is a must.

retreat to, a comfortable bed, and the correct food and water is essential.

“Poodles and Poodle-crosses, Schnauzers, Maltese and Bichon Frise are all low-allergenic breeds because they don’t shed. If you’re opting for a Poodle-cross, such as a Cavoodle, make sure it has more Poodle characteristics otherwise it could still shed hair,” says Edwina.

She also has advice for helping them adapt. “Allowing your pet to get used to the new environment slowly is important. Don’t give a cat or dog the run of the whole house to start with. They need to feel secure first,” she says.

Regardless of your pet choice, ensuring it comes from a reputable source is essential. “Make sure that the pet store can show you the full history of your pet and its health checks.” If you would rather adopt a pet, it’s still important to go to a well-respected source. Purr-fect Pets is now taking in rescue kittens to find them forever homes. “If you’re adopting a pet from a rescue shelter, it’s often a good idea to foster first so that you can get to know the animal and make sure that they are the right fit for your family,” Edwina says. “Getting to know local trainers is also a good idea.” Regardless of which pet you choose, making sure you have the basics of a safe, quiet space to

And don’t forget the training! “Getting the right advice and training from the start is essential,” Edwina adds. “Puppies can be trained from eight weeks old and you must socialise dogs before 16 weeks. Continuing this practice throughout their lives will help them to stay happy and healthy.” No matter what pet you choose, remember it’s for life. If you have any concerns before or after your pet comes home, visit Purr-fect Pets as a starting point — the staff have a wealth of experience and knowledge. You can also look online, provided the sites you visit present a reputable source of information.

“This is My Village, our Village, my very own community,” was Gail Kelly’s opening address to the sell-out crowd who’d come to hear the former CEO of Westpac talk about her book Live, Lead, Learn.

The event, in conjunction with Book Review, had a resounding key message of choosing positivity through every aspect of life, whether that’s work, family or love. Gail’s message of demonstrating generosity of spirit in everything you do resonated strongly with the 250-strong audience. For inspirational advice, pick up a copy from Book Review, and keep an eye out for other author events hosted at St Ives Village over the coming months.

Luckily, Mona Mahajan from St Ives Medical & Cosmetic Centre and Glow Anti-Aging Clinic is on hand to share her expertise on the causes of skin damage, and tips on reversing and preventing the signs of ageing. “Skin damage can occur from a multitude of factors, such as exposure to pollution, UV rays, alcohol, smoking, not eating nutritious food or not getting adequate sleep,” says Mona. “When you don’t look after it, your skin appears tired, dull and stressed. It’s the last thing you want going into the social season.”

“Also, as we age, our collagen and elastin production naturally decreases, which leads to wrinkle formation,” shares Mona. “The purpose of most of our treatments is to stimulate the skin to produce more collagen, so the skin appears radiant and will glow through to your next event.” You don’t have to worry about skipping any parties to care for your skin, either. “Our treatments are nonsurgical, and most don’t require any downtime at all. Treatments such as Microdermabrasion with Vitamin Infusions help to deliver antioxidants into the deeper layers of the skin and will see you glowing from the second you step out of the clinic,” says Mona. “We also offer PRP injections that use the healing qualities in your own blood to stimulate new cell growth.
