When news broke in August that a blood plasma center would move into the building where Aldi — the only thing approximating a full-service grocery store in Maywood — had once been, many residents expressed alarm and frustration. They were concerned that the center, located at 215 Madison St., would attract loitering drug addicts and other criminal elements, and possibly even students at Proviso East High School, which is located just across the street from the facility. Last month, a windy wintery storm swept the Chicago area. Tree limbs toppled power lines, resulting in thousands of customers who experienced temporary power outages. On Nov. 15, ComEd unveiled two state-ofthe-art laboratories based at its Technical Center, 1319 S. 1st Ave. in Maywood, that
are designed to give the utility space to test out the kind of solutions that might make power outages related to extreme weather and other emergencies a thing of the past. During a ceremony held Friday morning at the Technical Center, ComEd officials and other community leaders dedicated the Grid of the Future Lab and a Forensics lab. The Grid of the Future Lab will conduct
real-time digital simulations on a range of new technologies — from the components of a microgrid cluster that ComEd is currently building in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood to a super-fast electrical vehicle charger.
