In 1968, Steve and Gick Schmidt were planning to move to New York City temporarily so that Steve could pursue his doctorate degree. The couple agreed to rent their home at 807 N. 5th Ave. to Robert King, a black professor at Concordia University in River Forest, his wife and their two children.

“My husband and I went to all of our neighbors on our side of the street to explain that we’d be back in a year and a half and that we were renting the home — they weren’t buying, they renting,” Gick recalled 50 years later. “When we came back a year and a half later, every home was See NOMCO on page 3

Registered voters in Proviso Township cast over 75% of ballots for Democrats

The vaunted blue wave that was supposed to wash over the country during the Nov. 6 midterm election turned out to be rather uneven. In some places, particularly southern states like Texas and Georgia, the wave underwhelmed.

As of Nov. 11, Democrats had gained a net of 29 seats in Congress, giving the party enough seats to retake the U.S. House even as the U.S. Senate remains in Republican control. Two close governor’s races in Georgia and Florida appear headed for recounts.

In Illinois, the wave was more like a tsunami. Come next year, Democrats will

not only have complete control of the governor’s mansion, the House and the Senate, but they’ll also control all statewide offices, such as state’s attorney and treasurer.

None of this happened at Proviso Math and Science Academy, where sophomore Camilo Medina attends, but that didn’t stop him from venturing east to nearby Oak Park to help lead a rally at Oak Park and River Forest High School on Sunday.

Medina — a Forest Park resident and son of District 209 board member Claudia Medina — was among at least 300 hundred people from across the Chicago area who converged at OPRF’s main entrance before marching on sidewalks west down Lake Street in protest of a string of racist and anti-Semitic incidents that have happened at the school within the last two weeks.

Earlier this month, OPRF officials discovered racist and antiSemitic graffiti found in bathroom stalls and on a shed near the high school’s tennis courts. Days before that incident, students said that they heard a white teacher say the n– word three times during class.

And on Friday, a student used Apple’s AirDrop feature to send the image of a swastika from somewhere in the high school’s

auditorium to students’ cell phones during an assembly.

“I’m here in solidarity to support students who, like me, are Latino, black, Jewish and minorities, and who feel intimidated by symbols of racism,” Medina said, speaking to the large throng at OPRF’s main entrance.

“I don’t know how to describe the individual or individuals who sent these images of hatred,” Medina said. “There are simply no words for what they have done. These individuals who sent these images of hatred and white supremacy reflect a flaw in our community — that’s what that I am here to address.”

Anthony Clark, an OPRF teacher, community activist and former Congressional candidate, helped organize the march.

Clark said that the students were leading the rally because “adults have failed them.”

“We’re here today because as adults we have failed our young people,” Clark said. “While they’re expending their emotional energy, which they should not have to do in 2018, think about what you are willing to risk as an adult to make change.”

The Schmidt’s lived experience with what would later be known as “white flight” was one reason why the North Maywood Community Organization, or NoMCO, was founded inside of the couple’s 5th Avenue home, Gick said during a 50th anniversary gathering held Sept. 21 at the Maywood Multipurpose Building, 200 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood.

“That really helped us understand why NoMCO was so very important to the future of Maywood,” she said.

The Schmidts had moved into their home on the north side of the railroad tracks in 1965 because “we really wanted a diverse neighborhood for our daughters and we wanted to be close to St. Paul Lutheran School, where they were going to go to school.”

The Schmidts, however, would soon discover that the neighborhood “was not quite as diverse as we had hoped,” Gick recalled.

The purpose of NoMCO was summarized in an April 7, 1968 edition of the Proviso Star Sentinel, which Gick read during the September gathering.

The organization wanted “to open the lines of communication among ourselves and other Maywood groups, governing bodies and individuals with similar concerns. We support the Maywood Fair Housing ordinance both as the law of the village and as an enactment of our JudeoChristian moral principles.”

T h o s e principals were forged in a swiftly changing racial climate.

The assassination of Martin Luther King on April 4, 1968, was the catalyst that prompted Congress to pass the Fair Housing Act of 1968, which President Lyndon B. Johnson signed on April 11.

The law prohibited discrimination in housing and expressly outlawed practices such as redlining (denying people financial assistance like home mortgages because of their race or ethnicity) and blockbusting (persuading white owners to sell their properties at depressed prices by inciting fears about black neighbors).

The law, however, was not enough to stanch the flow of white residents from Maywood just as federal housing policies were allowing black residents to move beyond the

Village Free Press | November 14, 2018 handful of blocks south of the tracks where they were forced to live for decades.

Between 1970 and 1980, whites would go from roughly 60 percent of Maywood’s population to around 25 percent of the population.

Lois Baumann was born and raised in Maywood. Her grandfather built homes here, some of which, Baumann said, are still standing.

“When we were growing up, there were beautiful elm trees that formed an arch going down 5th Avenue,” she said, before reminiscing on now-defunct local institutions like Freedman’s and Sears and Montgomery Ward’s and the Lido Theater (where “you could go on Saturdays and for 10 cents watch cartoons all morning”).

Baumann’s family was among those rare whites who stayed behind. As with the Schmidts, Baumann said that she was

For NoMCO, change took a variety of forms. Wally Saunders — whose husband, newspaper publisher Ron Saunders, would lose a close race for mayor to the village’s first African American mayor, Joe Freelon — said that the Schmidts were among the first families they met when they moved into their home on 4th Avenue.

Along with collaborating with organizations like Head Start and the Proviso Council on Aging, NoMCO also hosted events like the Maywood Renaissance Housewalk, blood drives and summer potluck parties.

The group also became a political force in its own right. In 1977, NoMCO’s first president, Gary Woll, was elected village trustee. Woll would serve in the position for more than three decades before serving one term as village clerk.

Over the years, NoMCO’s membership would diversify, as more and more residents of the village’s south end got involved in the civic group. Eventually, the organization

prompted to do more than sit idly by and watch the exodus.

“My parents said to me when my block was moving out, ‘This is so wrong,’” Baumann recalled. “That’s all I needed to hear. ‘This is so wrong.’ It’s a great sentence. I was inspired then. I thought if it’s wrong, then I could make it right. I started teaching dance lessons for .25 cents in my garage.”

Baumann, along with her husband, Ernie, founded Maywood Fine Arts — which includes Mr. Ernie’s Flip, Flop tumbling and

“We tried not to have animosity, but for years it was touch and go,” Saunders said.

The organization’s mission and model, however, remains, Saunders said.

“With the crazy government we have,” she said, “I would hope that people would still be enthused about being kind to one another, helping one another, and being about diversity and equality.”

ELECTION briefs

Chuy joins Davis, Quigley in representing Proviso in Congress Proviso Township officially gained a new congressman on Nov. 6 after voters overwhelmingly chose Jesus “Chuy” Garcia to represent the 4th District, which includes part of Melrose Park, in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Garcia beat his Republican challenger, Mark Wayne Lorch, by a wide margin in the suburbs and in the city. In the suburbs, Garcia beat Wayne 76 percent to 24 percent and 90 percent to 10 percent in the city.

Garcia joins longtime incumbents Danny K. Davis (7th) and Mike Quigley (5th) as the congressmen representing areas in Proviso Township in the U.S. House.

Before his election to the House, Garcia served as a Cook County Commissioner representing the 7th District. He will succeed outgoing U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, who announced earlier this year that he would retire from congress.

Davis coasted to victory over Republican Craig Cameron 87 percent to 13 percent in the suburbs and 88 percent to 12 percent in the city.

Quigley, whose district also includes parts of Melrose Park, beat Republican Tom Hanson 64 percent to 36 percent in the city and 81 percent to 19 percent in the suburbs.

The congressmen’s victories all came in what shaped up to be a much weaker national “Blue Wave” than Democrats had hoped.

The party nonetheless recaptured Congress and picked up a handful of governor seats that had once belonged to Republicans, such as the one in Illinois, where Democrat and billionaire heir J.B. Pritzker trounced incumbent Bruce Rauner.

Karen Yarbrough elected County Clerk Since 1999 — when the late Eugene Moore was tapped by Cook County Democratic heavyweights like John Stroger, Jr. and John Daley to finish out Jesse White’s term as Cook County Recorder of Deeds after White was elected Illinois Secretary of State — a Maywood resident has helmed the recorder’s office.

In November 2016, around two-thirds of voters in the county voted in favor of consolidating the recorder’s office with that of the Cook County Clerk. Now, it’s up to Moore’s successor, Maywood resident Karen Yarbrough, to preside over the historic merger.

Yarbrough ran unopposed for the clerk’s position during Tuesday’s election, garnering more than a million votes on her way to becoming the first female, the first African American and the first suburban resident to hold the clerk’s seat. She’ll replace longtime county clerk David Orr. On Oct. 25, Yarbrough outlined some of her plans and priorities for the clerk’s job for members of the Maywood-Proviso Rotary Club at Meal of the Day Cafe in Maywood.

“This office tells the story of the people of Cook County and Chicago,” Yarbrough said of the clerk’s office. “We hold the records of birth, death and marriage. We’re also the election authority for the entire county.

And when the recorder’s office merges with the clerk’s office, then we’ll take on the land records.”

Yarbrough said that in the run-up to her election to the county clerk’s position, she met with incumbent Orr, along with a number of clerks of suburban municipalities, such as Maywood Clerk Viola Mims, in order to get a feel for the office and its responsibilities.

Yarbrough said that “cyber-security is probably one of the most important issues we’re facing.”

She said that she’ll preside over the introduction of new optical scan paper voting machines and the implementation of a new cashiering system in the clerk’s office.

“People want paper ballots,” she said.

“They want to know that whatever they’re punching, they can take that ballot and it counts.

People feel better with paper. They do. Until we do something differently or something else happens, we’re going to have paper ballots.”

From 2001 until 2013, when she became recorder, Yarbrough represented the 7th District in the Illinois House of Representatives.

In Broadview and Melrose Park, ballot referenda win big Virtually every local referendum on ballots in Bellwood, Broadview, Maywood and Melrose Park passed, most overwhelmingly, during Tuesday’s election.

All three countywide referenda passed with at least 80 percent of the vote across the county. Those ballot initiatives include:

Minimum wage Shall the minimum wage in your municipality match the $13 per hour Cook County minimum wage law for adults over the age of 18 by July 1, 2020, and be indexed to the consumer price index after that?

Result: Suburban Cook County: 80 percent in favor versus 20 percent against. Chicago: 92 percent in favor versus 8 percent against.

Earned sick time Shall your municipality match the Cook County earned sick time law which allows for workers to earn up to 40 hours (5 days) of sick time a year to take care of their own health or a family member’s health?

Result: Suburban Cook County: 86 percent in favor versus 14 percent against. Chicago: 93 percent in favor versus 7 percent against.

Gun dealer penalties Should the State of Illinois strengthen penalties for the illegal trafficking of firearms and require all gun dealers to be certified by the State?

Result: Suburban Cook County: 90 percent in favor versus 10 percent against. Chicago: 92 percent in favor versus 8 percent against.

Homeowner’s exemptions in Proviso Township A ballot initiative exclusive to Proviso Township residents related to homeowner’s exemptions also passed overwhelmingly.

The question: Should the State of Illinois increase the residential and senior homeowner’s exemptions to help reduce property taxes for the residents of Proviso Township?

Result: 85 percent in favor versus 15 percent against.

Voters in Broadview approved two ballot initiatives.

Fines for littering In an effort to keep the Village of Broadview clean, should the Village increase the current fines for littering in the Village of Broadview from the current minimum fine of $50.00 and maximum fine of $750.00 to a minimum fine of $150.00 and a maximum fine of $750.00?

Result: 53 percent in favor versus 47 percent against.

Tobacco purchasing age Should the minimum age to purchase tobacco products in the State of Illinois be increased from eighteen (18) years of age to twenty-one (21) years of age?

Result: 81 percent in favor versus 19 percent against.

Voters in Melrose Park approved three ballot initiatives.

Firearm storage Shall all firearms be required by law to be stored in a safe and secure manner that prevents access by unauthorized persons, when such firearms are not under the control of the owner?

Result: 89 percent in favor versus 11 percent against.

Fines for littering In an effort to keep the Village of Melrose Park clean, should the Village of Melrose Park increase the current fines for littering on public or private property in the Village of Melrose Park from the current minimum fine of $300.00 and maximum fine of $500.00 to a minimum fine of $400.00 and a maximum fine of $750.00?

Result: 63 percent in favor versus 37 percent against.

Vaping products Given the increased use of vaping products by persons under the age of eighteen (18) years old, should the Village of Melrose Park prohibit the sale of compact vaping devices within the Village of Melrose Park limits?

Result: 74 percent in favor versus 26 percent against.

At the top of the ticket, Democrat J.B. Pritzker trounced Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner 54 percent to 39 percent, with 99 percent of precincts having reported results as of Nov. 11.

The election was enough for Edward McClelland, of Chicago Magazine, to declare the Illinois Republican Party dead.

“Here’s a historical picture of how utterly defeated Illinois Republicans will find themselves next year,” McClelland wrote.

“The state’s Democratic Party is now in its most powerful position since the 1840s, when it held all the statewide offices, both Senate seats, and had two-to-one advantages in both houses of the legislature. Back then, the Democrats didn’t even have a Republican Party to contend with — only the hapless, soon-to-expire Whigs.”

Proviso Township’s nearly 97,000

registered voters contributed to that defeat, with roughly 76 percent of voters casting ballots for Pritzker, according to preliminary results released by the Cook County Clerk’s office.

Voter turnout in Proviso was high for a non-presidential election, with 55 percent of registered voters casting ballots in the township. In 2014, the last non-presidential midterm election year, the township’s turnout rate was around 50 percent.

Precinct 10 in Melrose Park and precinct 80 in Stone Park had the two lowest turnout rates in the township, with only 34 percent and 35 percent of registered voters casting ballots, respectively. Precinct 62 in Forest Park had the highest turnout rate in the township.

Precincts 30 and 43 in Hillside and Maywood, respectively, were among the strongest Pritzker strongholds, with each giving Rauner fewer than 10 votes.

Rauner only won two precincts in Proviso — 84 and 96, in Westchester and La Grange Park, respectively. Incidentally, precinct 84 was also the only precinct in the township to go for Trump in 2016.

Broadview approves new police sergeant’s contract The Nov. 5 vote came after three years of negotiations

During a regular meeting on Nov. 5, the village of Broadview’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously in favor of authorizing and approving a collective bargaining agreement with the Illinois Council of Police on behalf of the village’s sworn police sergeants.

The contract agreement, which village officials said runs from May 1, 2017 through April 30, 2020, entails 2.25 percent pay raises each year through 2020. The agreement is the result of negotiations over three years.

Trustee John Ealey said that he wished the time between authorizing the new bargaining agreement and having to renegotiate another agreement “had been longer.”

In response to Ealey, Mayor Katrina Thompson said that it “took three years to get to this point, because we are behind.”

Thompson said that the village will “be renegotiating next year. If we were on point three years ago and this contract had gotten ratified then, we’d be on target.”

T r u s t e e Sherman Jones, who was the village’s mayor at the time, explained that the delay was due to “confusion about who was going to negotiate the contract.”

“We were trying to get this done several years ago, when the original contract expired,” Jones said, adding that once the negotiations got

delayed, “a new mayor was elected and the process had to almost get restarted all over again and the bargaining members for the village had to change.”

Jones said that “issues on [the village’s] side” caused the delay.

“Do not hold this against the police department, the sergeants and their negotiators,” he said. “That was all on us.”

Timothy Hicks, Broadview’s finance director, said that the 2.25 percent annual pay raises were already budgeted.

“We budgeted for the pay raises, because we anticipated that we would get the contracts done within this particular fiscal year,” Hicks said. “The police chief, as part of his budgeting, took that into consideration.”

Broadview is not alone when it comes to long negotiations on police sergeant’s contracts. In April, the Maywood Board of Trustees approved a collective bargaining agreement between the village and the Metropolitan Alliance of Police Sergeants, Chapter 486.

Until that vote, there had been no sergeants’ contract in place since 2014, village officials said.

According to Maywood’s village attorney, that contract was resolved through federal mediation provided by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, an independent body of the U.S. government that helps resolve labor disputes.

RUNNING AGAIN: District 209 board members and Proviso Together running mates Ned Wagner, Claudia Medina and Theresa Kelly during the party’s Nov. 6 campaign kickoff.

Proviso Together, the political party that accomplished a seven-member super-majority last February when all four of its candidates were voted to seats on the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 school board, held a campaign kickoff on Saturday for the party’s original three candidates elected in 2015.

Among the four newcomers, three — Rodney Alexander, Amanda Grant and Samuel Valtierrez — remain committed Proviso Together members while Arbdella Patterson has parted ways with the group.

The kickoff was held at the Forest Park home of board member Claudia Medina, who along with D209 board President Ned Wagner and member Theresa Kelly, round out the Proviso Together slate.

When reached by phone on Nov. 6, Wagner seized on a range of developments over the last four years to argue why he thinks he and his running mates deserve another term.

“The thing I’m most proud of as a board member is that we have been able to be disciplined in our spending,” Wagner said. “We’ve saved money that will be put toward the facility master plan. If we stick to this plan and continue to discipline our spending, we’ll be able to do a lot of really good work on these buildings so students can have great learning environments.”

Wagner also said he’s proud of the “foundational work we’ve put in at Proviso East,” adding that, despite the recent State Report Card data designating East a lowest-performing school,

“every issue on that report card is being addressed very assertively and creatively.”

During an interview on Nov. 7, Medina said that the focus of her first term, and one that she hopes to extend to a second, would be on equity.

“I’m focused on equitable practices in the district and to make sure we have a growing, diverse population,” she said. “All of our different communities have different needs and it’s important to address all of those needs.”

Medina cited the district’s new curriculum, new contracts for teachers and the superintendent, more professional development for educators and the ongoing facilities master plan as points of progress.

She said that she’s looking forward to seeing the results of an in-depth analysis of the district’s equity landscape that the board brought in. The consultant, Medina said, is working pro bono and evaluating everything from test scores to grade levels to assess the district’s equity needs.

“We are running as people who are very different, but who represent the breadth of our communities,” Medina said of the party. “We want to make sure that our schools are prepared not just for the 21st century, but for the 22nd century.”

According to the party’s latest D-2 quarterly report, Proviso Together $180 available at the close of the most recent quarterly filing period.

Sept. 18 was the first day to circulate petitions for independent and nonpartisan candidates, along with new political parties. The last day to file petitions for all candidates is Dec. 17. The election will take place on April 2, 2019.

New chamber head wants to bring Silicon Valley to Proviso Robert Truman said Bellwood Chamber, Best of Proviso to launch free coding program

During a Bellwood Chamber of Commerce membership and awards meeting held Nov. 9 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center, 200 S. Mannheim Rd. in Hillside, the chamber’s new executive director said that he wants to bring aspects of Silicon Valley to Proviso Township.

Robert Truman, who was hired last month as the first executive director in the chamber’s 60-year history, announced that he’s helping to launch a free program that will teach business owners and community members how to code.

The program is called Proviso Codes — Coding for Life, Truman said, and it’s the result of a collaboration between the Bellwood Chamber and the community organization Best of Proviso Township.

The Proviso East graduate and owner of InfoMaple — a data analysis and visualization firm — said that around 40 people, ages 10 to 65, have already registered for the free program. Truman said that training locations will be announced next week.

Truman said that once trained, community members will be partnered with local businesses that have technological needs.

The chamber will also work with outside companies to provide area businesses with direct technological assistance, Truman said.

“We’ll work with companies like Google and Microsoft to train some businesses in technology to help them improve their operations,” he said.

Truman said that in addition to helping

community members and businesses increase their technological capacity, he also plans on helping chamber members understand the state’s procurement process — something that is key to minority-owned businesses landing lucrative government contracts.

“I have experience with the Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce and I understand the procurement process,” Truman said.

“We want to get local businesses certified as minority- and woman-owned companies so that they can tap into opportunities that exist locally and at the state level.”

Truman said that he’s worked as a business analyst in corporate America for 15 years for “companies like Kraft Foods, Walgreens and McDonald’s.” He said that “working for those companies paid the bills,” but the work didn’t bring him any gratification, which is why he started his own business about three years ago.

“I feel that I’m overqualified to help businesses understand what their needs are and to take them to the next level,” he said.

Truman’s hire is part of the Bellwood Chamber’s mission to become Proviso Township’s premier business organization, said Christopher Parker, the chamber’s board president and a vice president with Wintrust Financial Corporation.

“We had to get somebody with strong leadership and a strong business acumen to lead us in our golden years,” said Parker.

“We’re looking to represent the entire Proviso Township.”

VILLAGE perspectives Stay safe on the road this holiday season With the holidays swiftly approaching, I want to encourage people to be extra careful and patient while driving. Here are some tips for avoiding car accidents: Stop, look and listen. Pull into traffic slowly when doing things like entering intersections, pulling into busy streets, merging or crossing railroad tracks. Don’t just scan the car directly in front of you.

Make sure that you’re looking at the traffic in front of that car, too. The more you can anticipate ahead of time, the more time you have to react.

Don’t multi-task when driving. Don’t do things like use your cell phone, eat and drink, tend to the children or groom in the mirrors while you’re driving. If you have to do these things, pull over.

Do not drive while impaired. Don’t drive while drunk or drugged. If you have used substances, make sure you have a designated driver around or somewhere you can be until you’re sober. And remember, even tipsy driving is driving under the influence.

Maintain your car. Perform regular engine maintenance, especially while driving during the winter months.

Beware of your blind spots. According to Edmunds, you should “adjust your side mirrors and rearview mirror to provide you with one near seamless panoramic scene of the view behind you, but don’t rely solely on them. Actually turn to look directly into the lanes beside you to avoid missing something left undetected by your mirrors. Also consider the blind spots for other drivers around you, especially truckers, and try to minimize the amount of time you spend in them.”

Drive with both hands on the wheel.

Always drive with your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock position so that you have maximum control of your car if you’re forced to make a quick maneuver in order to avoid a car accident, Edmunds points out.

Wear your seatbelt. Develop the habit of always putting your seatbelt on before you even drive off. This is a potentially life-saving habit.

Limit your nighttime driving: According to Geico, “The risk of a fatal crash is three times higher at night than in the day for every mile driven. It’s better to avoid nighttime driving until you’re comfortable driving during the day.”

Prayers against racism Recently, there has been an uptick in racism and anti-Semitism in our community.

We are all aware of the dangerous racial rhetoric that came from the election of President Trump, but many of us, myself included, thought we were safe in our neighborhood from white terrorism.

However, the spree of recent local attacks, has proven me wrong. Hate graffiti was drawn on garages, someone wrote “nigger” on high school walls in a neighboring suburb, and even someone air-dropped the Nazi symbol to students.

I moved to Broadview because I wanted to give my children the “gift” of living in a “racism-free community.” I wanted my children to feel safe playing outside of their home, walking down their street or community without worrying about being called a nigger, among other things. I also chose Broadview because professionally, I work on social justice and racism, so I wanted a respite at home. I naively believed by moving to Broadview, my family, unlike so many of

my friends, could avoid dealing with racism in our home community.

I naively thought living in Broadview would give my husband and I more time to delay “the race talk” and possibly avoid overt racism for our children. Like so many parents of color, I agonized over when to give my black children “the race talk” and I realize I can’t avoid it by moving to a certain community. Racism, is and always has been, in all communities in America. There is no community where we can isolate our children from dealing with racism.

There are many tactics to fight racism, like writing tips to navigate white racism or giving “the race talk.” But I don’t want to use those tactics. Instead, I’m going to use prayer as a tool to stop racism.

To my children, and all children in our village, I want you to know you are a child of God, divinely and perfectly created and here are my prayers for you.

First, I pray that you know, with every bit of your fiber, that you are a divinely and perfectly created child of God. From the top of your heads to the bottom of your feet, you are beautiful and there is absolutely nothing about you that needs to change.

The texture of your hair was chosen by God. God looked at all the beautiful shades of brown, and chose the perfect shade of brown for you.

My second prayer is that you are able to have a childhood. For much of history in America, black children were not able to just be children. So I pray that you have a racism-free childhood, which means: 1) You can play in your neighborhood without worrying about neighbors calling the police because you look, “dangerous.”

2) That you can have teachers and educators who see your genius and encourage you academically.

3) That you never have to “role-play” how

to stay calm when you are detained by the police.

4) That you are able to make stupid kid mistakes and still be treated like a child. Dear children, you don’t have to be perfect. In fact, it is just the opposite.

Your childhood is your time to make stupid mistakes. That is how you learn and grow.

5) I pray that instead of worrying about racism, you worry about normal stuff like homework, extracurricular activities and TV shows.

6) That you feel free to explore and experiment with God’s beautiful creation without racial limitations. That you feel free to ride your bike in the forest preserve, swim or play at any park district, hang out with your friends outside and be able to freely engage with hip-hop. I pray that you are free to explore whatever interests you, like double-dutch, hand games and rap cyphers, without submitting to the pressure of the “white gaze,” or “respectability politics.’

7) My last prayer is that you know that you not only covered with the blood of Christ, but the blood, sweat and prayers of your parents and your black ancestors whose spirits surround you. You are not alone in fighting racism, your community is with you.

Lastly, I pray that God covers all the children in our community. I pray that our children have the innocent childhood they deserve, just like white children in America. And, if or when, racism is able to penetrate our bubble of protection in our small community, that God gives us, the adults, the right tools we need to defeat racism and protect our children.
