Maywood’s 15 homicides, gun violence prompt reckoning Community members search for solutions to shootings By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

So far this year, there have been 15 homicides in Maywood, 14 of them from gun violence and one the result of an inebriated driver who was later charged with vehicular homicide, according to Maywood Police Chief Valdimir Talley. Talley presented the figures during a town hall meeting held Oct. 29, at Maywood’s Council Chambers, 125 S. 5th Ave. The town hall was designed to discuss what many residents fear is a widespread problem in the village — the seemingly constant gunshots that haunt their sleep at night and send them scrambling indoors during the day. The redevelopment of the section of Westchester along the portion of Roosevelt Road, between Mannheim Road and Westchester Boulevard is still a work in

progress, according to Westchester Village Manager Paul Nosek. The manager also gave an update on the village’s efforts to relocate Village Hall. Westchester’s long-term plans call for redeveloping about eight acres of property
