In churches, depression hides in plain sight, clergy say Local clergy met at NAMI’s The Living Room in Broadview on Sept. 21 to brainstorm ways to improve how area churches deal with mental illness By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

Ericka Bailey, an ordained minister and the wife of a pastor, had been dealing with depression for more than 20 years before she was comfortable enough to share her struggles with the church members who looked up to her as their first lady. “Being a preacher’s wife and a member of the ordained clergy, I kept it in hiding,” Bailey said of her depression during a small gathering of female church leaders at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Metro Suburban’s The Living Room, 1917 See DEPRESSION on page 3

Maywood looks to extend lifespan of TIFs Officials tout high performance of Madison/Fifth Ave. and Roosevelt Rd. TIF districts By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

During a regular meeting on Sept. 17, the Maywood Board of Trustees voted 6-1 to extend the terms of the village’s two Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts — one of which is the largest revenue-generating TIF district in Proviso Township. Trustee Isiah Brandon voted against the measure.

The village’s Roosevelt Road and Madison Street/Fifth Avenue TIF districts were each established in 1997 and 1998, respectively, and are close to expiring. TIF districts have terms of 23 years. They may be extended to 35 years by the Illinois General Assembly, but that would require the written consent of every affected taxing district that’s affected by the TIF district and a sponsor in

the Illinois House and Senate of legislation authorizing the extension. When a municipality creates a TIF district, it tallies the total value of property of the area within the district. All of the new property taxes generated above this “base value,” as a result of new economic development and increasing property See MAYWOOD TIFs on page 4
