Children are vandalizing Maywood Park District renovations, officials say

The Maywood Park District’s central area grounds recently received a $500,000 renovation and the historic building at 809 Madison St., which anchors the central area, is undergoing a $1.8 million renovation project, but all of these improvements face a threat — a group of teens and pre-teens who have been vandalizing the park in recent months, park district officials said last week.

Since April, records show, park district officials have filed at least nine reports with the Maywood Police Department.

Most of them have been for criminal theft of property and burglary to motor vehicles.

Park district officials, including Maywood Park District Executive Director Lonette Hall, Park District Board of Commissioners President Dawn Rone and Luis Leon, the district’s maintenance director, all said that they’ve witnessed the young people carry out many of the acts of vandalism. They even showed photos and video footage of the young people in action.

Stella Johnson, 102, celebrates her birthday in Maywood Time takes its toll on everyone – even someone who has lived for over a century in fairly good health. As recently as around her 101st birthday, Stella Johnson may have been struggling with glaucoma and arthritis, but her mind was still sharp.

When a nephew and a niece passed away within a short period of time, however, Stella Johnson “went into a daze” and hasn’t really come out of it, said Florianne Johnson, her daughter and caretaker.

But during a recent birthday party in Maywood at the home of Ebony Donnell, Stella’s granddaughter, held Aug. 3 to celebrate Stella turning 102, the centenarian — who lives on Chicago’s West Side — was alert to the love and care that surrounded her.

She even cracked jokes.

Stella’s family said that they believe that love has kept their matriarch alive for so long. Born in July 31, 1916 in Greenwood, Miss., Stella moved to Chicago with her two children in 1941 — the year she married her husband, Willie Johnson.

Stella held down manufacturing jobs at a glass company and then a belt company before she focused on housekeeping. She

retired in 1975. Along with her two children, Stella has five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

These days, it isn’t uncommon for Stella to stay awake for three days straight, talking non-stop, and then sleep for three days straight. Before her birthday celebration, she had been up for three days, so she frequently dosed off during the festivities.

But when Stella was asked about her past, she rattled out the dates of major events in her life, as well as the exact addresses of the places she lived in Chicago. And while glaucoma has robbed her of her eyesight, she recognized her relatives by name, if not necessarily by voice.

“She inspires me,” said Donnell of her grandmother. “On a regular day, she tell you about everything. She talk about how to make something, how to cook something. “ She attributed her grandmother’s longevity to one thing.

“That’s love,” Donnell said. “She’s got a whole lot more years.

Maywood board split on lifting ban on video gambling The board voted 3-3 on whether or not to lift moratorium on Class M liquor licenses

During a July 17 regular meeting, the Maywood Board of Trustees voted 3-3 on a motion to lift the moratorium on Class M liquor licenses, which are specific to gaming bistros. The motion also called for the board to recommend issuing a Class M license to a business owner who wants to open what would be the village’s second gaming bistro.

Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins, along with Trustees Kimyada Wellington and Antonio Sanchez voted in favor of the motion while Trustees Isiah Brandon, Ron Rivers and Melvin Lightford voted against the motion. Trustee Henderson Yarbrough was absent. Since the vote was tied, the motion failed.

The moratorium on the issuance of Class M liquor licenses has been in place since December 2016. The board instituted the ban after it had already approved the issuance of a Class M liquor license to Lacey’s Place, a video gaming establishment at 611 W. Roosevelt Rd., in March 2016.

That issuance, however, drew the ire of many residents, who were against video gaming establishments in Maywood because of numerous public safety and quality of life concerns. Trustees in support of granting Lacey’s the license, however, said that those concerns were overblown and not consistent with the reality.

Nonetheless, in June 2016, a group

of residents created an online petition expressing their opposition to video gaming that garnered more than 100 signatures. The next month, the board voted 4-2 to put the issue on the ballot as a non-binding advisory referendum.

Ramzey Fakhouri, who owns the strip mall at 608-22 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, presented to the board back in April his desire to open Lucky Bernie’s — a deli that would also feature beer, wine and video gambling — inside of a former Subway restaurant in the strip mall.

Fakhouri said that at the time that the video gaming concept is essential to the financial feasibility of his proposed restaurant, which he added is critical to his ability to stay afloat amid high property tax payments that have hampered the strip mall’s ability to attract, and keep, tenants.

The revenue from gaming, he said, would help offset his expenses.

On July 11, Maywood’s liquor control commission, which Perkins chairs, voted 5-0 to recommend that the board drop the moratorium and allow Fakhouri the Class M liquor license essential to opening his deli and gaming bistro. Commissioner Mary “May” Larry was absent during the vote.

During the July 17 meeting, there seemed to be some confusion among the board about the motion that was in place.

When Rivers pointed out that lifting the moratorium would theoretically open the

door to any number of potential developers wanting to apply for Class M licenses, Perkins pushed back, insisting that lifting the moratorium was only being considered because of Fakhouri’s particular case.

Clerk Viola Mims explained that even if the board approved the motion, Fakhouri would still need to go through a series of steps before he obtained the license. The wording of the motion, however, seemed to indicate that Fakhouri obtaining the license depended on the board’s approval during the July 17 meeting.

Maywood’s attorney, Michael Jurusik, said that the board could clarify the motion by splitting it in two, resulting in two separate motions — one on whether or not the moratorium should be lifted and the other on whether or not the board should consider giving Fakhouri a Class M. Jurusik said that the second motion could be tabled for another date, pending more board deliberation.

“You need to take those two separate,” Jurusik said. “In order to move forward, if you want to have more than one Class M video gaming cafe in town, you need to decide if you want to … do away with the moratorium. That’s step one. So it’s going to require a code amendment.

“Step two is you need to decide do you allow a second license, do you put a cap on the number of Class M licenses you’ll have in town?” Jurusik said. “You have that

authority as a board. You don’t need a cap because nobody can force you to issue a liquor license.”

While Perkins emphasized Fakhouri’s plight, some trustees said that the public’s preference for a moratorium on Class M licenses should also be considered.

“The young man has had the [strip mall] for years in Maywood and he came and appealed to Maywood for help so he could continue to do business,” said Perkins. “He owned that strip, he came and appealed.”

“There’s a lot to consider. We’re considering the people who elected us, who live here, and what their concerns are,” said Brandon, “but we also have this business owner who also pays taxes as well and what his wish is. This deserves some additional thought, because we have to take both sides into consideration.”

“We’re going to change that moratorium and start letting more bistros in our community?” said Lightford.

Despite Jurusik’s recommendation, Perkins insisted that the board vote on the two-pronged motion as it was presented.

When it failed, the mayor asked village staff to bring back additional information on the matter to the board.

“I’m requesting that the staff bring us additional information and bring it at the August meeting,” Perkins said. “At the next meeting, this will come back to the board.”

Bellwood sells vacant lot to developer The space at 2501 Madison St. could become eatery, strip mall

The Bellwood Board of Trustees voted unanimously during a July 18 regular meeting to sell a vacant village-owned lot at 2501 Madison St. in Belllwood to Northfield developer Steve Konstantopoulos.

According to Bellwood Mayor Andre Harvey, the developer is looking to build a quick-service restaurant on the site. Failing that, he would build a two- to three-space commercial strip.

Either way, Harvey said, the village is working closely with Konstantopoulos to ensure that whatever does go into it would be best for the site and for the village.

The lot is located on the northwest corner of Madison and 25th Avenues. The LoopNet lease listing created on July 30 touts the lot’s proximity to Eisenhower Expressway’s 25th Avenue off-ramp, as well as the fact that the intersection gets “50,000 plus vehicles per day.”

Harvey said that the village agreed to sell

the land to Konstantopoulos for $300,000.

He noted that, under the agreement, the developer has 120 days to inspect the site and he has a right to pull out of the sale.

Konstantopoulos bought the land through 537 25th LLC, a limited liability company that, according to the information available on Illinois Secretary of State’s website, was formed on Jan. 31. The company’s office is listed as being located at 545 25th Ave. in Bellwood. Because the LLC is relatively new, no reports are available.

At the moment, Konstantopoulos doesn’t have any tenants secured. What will go in, Harvey explained, will depend on who would be interested in the site.

“What [Konstantopoulos] wants is to put in is a quick-service restaurant,” he said.

“If that doesn’t go, he might break it up into a two or three strip mall business. So it depends on what gets to come here and how much space they need.”

Harvey added that Konstantopoulos is marketing the property “very aggressively”

According to the lease listing, the developer is leasing the land on an annual basis at the rate of $23 per square foot, or $24 per square foot for a “qualified national retailer.” A total of 26,000 square feet are available, so the total rent could be as much as $624,000 a year.

Quick Service restaurant is described as a preferred option and emphasized that the owner is flexible in terms of building something that would suit the tenant’s needs.

At the moment, the property is zoned commercial, so the developer would have considerable flexibility as to what can go in.

But Harvey emphasized that the village is very much involved in choosing the tenant.

“We are working with the developer, because we have to be 100 percent certain

that we’re not going to get something that’s not conducive that is not right for the village,” he said. “We are working with the developer to bring the best possible use to this corner.”

“Nature was there before lights or the internet,” said Samantha Chavez, a PMSA junior.

Artist Duarte said the artwork “has a deep message of the environment and how we can take care of natural things.”

It took the students three weeks to come up with the design, Duarte said. They presented the design to ComEd, which then approved it. The students then had to create the canvas which is on synthetic paper.

The mural, which is 100 feet wide and about 30 feet tall, will be placed on a garage in front of the Tech Center. It will cost about $100,000, with ComEd paying for it. The

mural so that area could be spruced up.

ComEd employees will have a good view of the artwork on the Fleet Garage because

the office building that faces the garage has three-story tall glass windows. “We wanted to do something to improve it, but also involve the community,” said Jose Hansen, a senior engineer for AMI Operations, ComEd Chicago Public Art Group was hired to manage the project. “They are very familiar with making murals and to make it happen.

They have very good connections with artists,” said Hansen. Duarte, the artist for this mural, has artwork displayed around the Chicagoland area, including the Pilsen neighborhood, Naperville, St. Charles, and Highland Park.

The mural will be around for years to come, but its impact will be lasting for students as well. “This mural has given us a big opportunity not only for the artists but for the students, to give them an idea for career opportunities for the future,” said Hansen.

And it looks as if the mural project has had the impact ComEd was looking for in the undertaking. “We are learning a lot about each other and art. It’s educational,” said Kayla Matthews, a sophomore at Proviso West.

The most extensive vandalism seems to happen after park district employees leave work to go home, they said.

The children, the officials allege, have broken into the 809 building, broken out multiple windows of the building, broken into a park district-owned van parked on the new basketball court, sprayed graffiti onto the walls of park district facilities, set firecrackers off in grass and on the court, and climbed onto a nearby construction genie, stealing the key.

“Two days ago, a gentlemen with the contractor talked to the kids in the neighborhood and said, ‘If anybody can find that key for me I’ll give them $20 and a pizza,’” Hall said. “The kids left and came back with the key.”

The vandalism has put officials in a bind.

They don’t want the kids arrested, but they also want to protect the community’s investment.

“We like to have kids in the park but what are we supposed to do to protect our property because they’re consistently damaging it?” said Rone, adding that Maywood police officers, including the chief, have been out multiple times to speak with the young people — to no avail.

Hall said that she’s been forced to hire additional security at the park, which she estimated will cost around $300 a day. That

“I’ve never seen this before,” said Leon.

“I’ve never seen a park get destroyed on purpose. I live in Chicago.”

Leon said that, in addition to vandalism, he suspects the young people are also engaging in “adult acts” on park district grounds.

“A little kid saw that and he was asking me, ‘What is that? What were they doing?’” he said. “I didn’t give him an explanation, because I wasn’t the person to give him an explanation.”

That function, Leon indicated, falls to their parents, who, he added, are nowhere to be found.

“Where are those parents and why are they not here? What’s happening? You want your kids to come to the park without having to think about other kids being reckless,” Leon said. “But these kids doing this stuff are still kids. They only want attention.”

Officials said that that they believe there are roughly two dozen kids in the group who appear to range in age from no older than nine to no older than 15.

They said that they’ve asked the children repeatedly for their names and addresses, but still haven’t been able to positively identify the young people. They suspect, they said, that some are not from Maywood.

Hall said that she doesn’t suspect that any of the kids are in gangs.

The park district officials said that they’ve also tried having conversations with the young people, but those get nowhere. Hall said that it’s as if the adults and kids speak different languages.

Rone said that she can predict what many people may be thinking about the situation.

If, the thinking goes, the park district only had more programming the young people wouldn’t be drawn to vandalism. None of the kids, she said, are involved in the park district’s summer camp, which currently hosts around 38 young people.

“How are we going to have programs for them if you have to have parents come in and sign them up?” she said.

“This is also the end of the summer session,” Hall added. “Our summer camp is winding down. Typically, with most park districts, you have a couple of weeks of down time. So, we’re winding down with our summer activities and everybody is getting revved up for back-to-school activities.”

Besides, there are many community programs beyond what the park district offers and “those kids aren’t in those programs, either,” Hall said. “There’s a difference between parks and recreation,” she said, “and social services.”

Man in custody, faces charges related to June 6 shooting of Broadview man One man is in custody and faces charges in relation to the shooting of a Broadview man back in June, according to a statement released by the Maywood Police Department on Monday.

According to police, Leonard Turner was charged with aggravated battery on Aug. 1 for the June 6 shooting of Lloyd Brown, of Broadview.

“Maywood investigators working with the U.S. Marshal’s Great Lakes Task Force were able to apprehend Leonard Turner, who also had multiple outstanding warrants in other jurisdictions,” Maywood Lt. Dennis Diaz noted in the statement.

Turner is currently in custody on a $25,000 dollar bond, police said.

Bellwood Fire Dept. to provide free child safety seats The Bellwood Fire Department will host a free child safety seat informational event on Sept. 15, fire department officials recently announced. They also have the ability to provide free child safety seats to residents who need them.

Child safety seat technicians will be at the Bellwood Fire Department to assist in installing child safety seats and to educate parents and guardians on the proper use of the seats.

The department will also provide free child safety seats to residents who need them and reside in Bellwood, Berkeley, Westchester, Maywood, Broadview, Stone Park or Hillside.

Triton gets $260K to beef up academic support programs

Proviso TIFs brought in $21.5M in 2017

No suspects are currently in custody, Willis said, adding that the shooting is still under investigation.

This upcoming school year, around two dozen people will work part-time offering tutoring and mentoring services at Triton College thanks to a $260,000 state grant, Triton officials announced in a statement released last week.

The part-time workers will all be members of AmeriCorps, a “network of national service programs, made up of three primary programs that each take a different approach to improving lives and fostering civic engagement,” according to the organization’s website.

Members of AmeriCorps dedicate a certain amount of service hours to addressing “critical community needs like increasing academic achievement, mentoring youth, fighting poverty, sustaining national parks, preparing for disasters, and more.”

In Triton’s case, 24 part-time AmeriCorps members will complete more than 900 service hours throughout the school year, school officials said.

The AmeriCorps members will work in a range of student service and mentoring programs, including a program called TRIUMPH (Triton Undergraduate Men Pursuing Higher Education), which is designed to support male students of color who attend the community college.

The members will also help out with tutoring and mentoring programs formed from collaborations between Triton and various community organizations like the Oak Park Public Library and West 40.

The 38 tax-increment financing districts in Proviso Township brought in roughly $21.5 million in revenue in 2017, according to the annual report on Chicago area TIF revenues released each year by Cook County Clerk David Orr’s office.

The 2017 haul is roughly on par with that of 2016, when Proviso’s taxing districts brought in $21.1 million in revenue. Last year, there were three TIF districts that were cancelled in Proviso Township — one each in Bellwood, Broadview and Forest Park.

Those three cancelled TIFs, all of them created in 1993, comprised 29 parcels and brought in around $1.2 million in revenue in 2016.

Some of that lost revenue was offset by the creation of two new TIFs in Proviso Township, both located in LaGrange Park, and the fact that most TIFs in the township experienced revenue bumps from 2016 to 2017.

Total TIF revenue for Cook County totaled around $1 billion in 2017, a nearly 20 percent increase over 2016, when total revenue was around $852,000. The total 2017 revenue of all 143 TIFs located in Chicago was around $660 million while the total revenue for the 304 TIFs in suburban Cook County was around $344 million.

TIF districts, according to Clerk Orr’s annual report, “allow the city to re-invest all new property tax dollars in the neighborhood from which they came for a 23-year period.”

“These ‘new’ revenues arise if new development takes place in the TIF district, or if the value of existing properties rises, resulting in higher tax bills. These funds can be spent on public works projects or given as subsidies to encourage private development.

But TIFs can also make it easier for the city to acquire private property and demolish buildings to make way for new construction.”

Bellwood D88 to spend $2.5M on technology improvements

Bellwood chamber looking for executive director The Bellwood Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors announced this month that there’s a vacancy for the chamber’s executive director position.

The executive director reports directly to the board and is responsible for “the effectiveness of staff/volunteers and the financial integrity and overall effectiveness of the organization,” according to a job description the board released. The director also serves as the organization’s official spokesperson.

The application process will be open from Aug. 1 through Aug. 31. The selected candidate will have a start date of Nov. 1.

This is a part time role with the expectancy of 10 hours worked per week.

One man dead, another injured after July 31 shooting in Maywood Kevon L. Sturkey, 24, was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center at 6:56 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s report.

The official autopsy results are still pending, but Maywood Police Commander Elijah Willis confirmed that Sturkey was the victim of a shooting that happened on Tuesday in the 1800 block of South 1st Ave. in Maywood. Sturkey lived on the block, according to the medical examiner.

Willis said that another person, so far unidentified, was injured during the shooting. He could not immediately provide a time when the incident took place.

During a special meeting on July 30, the Bellwood District 88 school board unanimously approved a $2.5 million IT infrastructure project.

The project, which will start during the 2018-19 school year and could take up to nine months to complete, will be paid for through a five-year financing agreement with Key Government Finance Inc. — a Coloradobased company.

According to its website, Key “makes competitive equipment and innovative technology possible for educational institutions despite capital restraints.”

District 88 officials said that Key was selected from among a pool of three possible financing companies. They added that Key offered the best terms and lowest rate of interest.

Harold Daniels, the district’s technology director, said at the July 30 meeting that the IT infrastructure project is necessary at this point, particularly considering that some of the district’s technology systems are basically beyond meaningful repair.

Daniels said that if the district’s current phone system, which is beyond “its end of life,” went down today “we’d be out [of phone service] for at least a good two months.”

He added that the district’s IT network is typically overwhelmed during standardized testing periods, when the more than 2,000 Google Chromebook laptops used by district students are being utilized at the same time.

Daniels said that the work will happen during the 2018-19 school year. Work will start at school buildings at the south end of the district, such as Lincoln Elementary, and will spread northward. The transportation center, he said, will be the last facility to get IT upgrades.

Daniels said that there will be sufficient measures in place to ensure that the work does not interfere with the safety of students. The infrastructure project, he said, should get the district to the point where its IT networks will be sufficiently updated and operable for at least the next five years.

When administrators at Proviso East High School opened teacher sign-ups for summer training, they expected about 23 people to enroll in the one-week course.

But as the sign-up lingered the signatures rolled in, with eventually half the teaching staff offering to give up part of their summer to improve their understanding of personalized competency-based education, more than double what Principal Patrick Hardy expected.

“I’m really proud of my teachers for this; I’m floored,” Hardy said. “I don’t think they realize how they’re driving the discussion.

We have 23 to 25 freshman teachers; that’s what we planned for. Sixty showed up.”

Earlier this year, Proviso East secured a twoyear, $200,000 contract with Marzano Academy, a nonprofit that helps schools implement personalized competency-based education, a system that empowers students to study and master skills at their own pace, and turn to peers, the internet, library and other outlets before they lean on teachers for help.

In this system, students can show proficiency in a topic through projects, presentations and even activities outside of

school, along with traditional testing.

“The Office of Academic’s commitment to high levels of academic proficiency for all students requires a personalized approach to the delivery of instruction, so that all students have the time, resources and supports needed to master the graduation competencies,” Nicole Howard, assistant superintendent for academics and student services, said in a statement.

Howard added that her office believes Marzano Academy will help Proviso East evolve its curriculum into a wholly competency-based model.

In April 2017, the Illinois State Board of Education selected Proviso East to be part of the first cohort of districts to roll out the competency-based system. Over the next four school years, officials plan to turn the entire school into a competency-based program, phasing the system in slowly, Hardy said, so the community, faculty and staff will have time to process the major instructional change, and the school can be precise in its implementation, because graduation requirements change under the system.

Hardy called last school year a “learning and research year” with 17 teachers piloting competency-based learning in their

classrooms. He said 2018-19 will be the first year the program is rolled out for the entire incoming freshman class at Proviso East.

As part of educational overhaul, Proviso East contracted with Marzano Academy for support, and is the only school in Illinois to partner with the nonprofit, Hardy said, adding that it’s the first comprehensive high school aiming to become a Marzano Academy in the nation, with the some 700 other academies being small charter schools that don’t offer sports programs.

“This is an awesome thing that this school and this community has chosen to do and I’m proud to have been a part of that decision,” Hardy said. “It’s OK to be the innovator, and it’s OK to go first. It’s also scary … we don’t want that fear to be the thing that stops us for doing something that could be marvelous for our community.”

At the beginning of the summer, staff attended a one-week training program hosted

by Marzano, which outlined competencybased education, how to promote student agency and what grading looks like under the system.

The training questioned traditional methods, like always testing students on Friday, and taught that, in some cases,

students will be assigned a number of between 0 and 4 and will be given a description of their skill set as their grade.

Hardy said this offers teachers and parents more information on what concepts students do and do not understand.

“If we continue to expect that school must look like it did when my grandma went to school, when my father went to school, and when I went to school, we might continue to struggle to move the ball downfield,” Hardy said. “So when the kid is bringing home a proficiency scale and saying, ‘I’m a 2 and this is why,’ that’s different than saying, ‘I’m a 70.’ So we’ve got to be ready for it to look different, feel different and ask different questions.”

The contract with Marzano is for two years and at the rate Proviso East’s teaching staff has embraced it, the entire faculty might be schooled in competency-based best practices earlier than expected, Hardy said.

“We thought it might take us the full four years to get everybody in, but it could be a much shorter and accelerated process because our teachers stepped up to the plate and said, ‘I’m not waiting,’” Hardy said. “It’s very exciting,”

PMSA grad wins full ride to study neuroscience Omalabake Oyetayo one of 6 D209 grads to get $1,500 scholarship

Growing up, Omolabake Oyetayo’s father always said to her, ‘It takes brains to work with brains.” That’s mostly what has motivated the 17-year-old to study neuroscience this fall at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Oyetayo, or “Labake” as her friends and family call her, has won a $1,500 “Persistence Pays” scholarship from 209 Together and the Kiwanis Club of Forest Park. Every year the group awards scholarships to hard-working high school students from Proviso Township High School District 209.

But the recent Proviso Math and Science Academy (PMSA) graduate doesn’t have to worry about covering the rest of her college costs. Oyetayo has also won a full ride from the University of Illinois. She says she will use the $1,500 scholarship to cover her textbooks costs.

Oyetayo emigrated to the U.S. from Lagos, Nigeria in 2008 with her parents and two brothers. Her family settled in Westchester.

Her younger brother, now 15 years old, attends Proviso West High School and her older brother, now 21 years old, attends Loyola University in Chicago. Oyetayo was

the only one of her siblings who attended PMSA. During family meals, her parents would regale her and her brothers with stories of what it was like to grow up in Nigeria. But Oyetayo hasn’t been able to visit Nigeria since she moved to America because of her busy academic schedule.

Oyetayo attended Westchester Middle School where, she says, she was used to doing well in all of her classes – even the advanced ones. When Oyetayo started at PMSA she struggled at first. She believed asking for help was a handicap rather than a tool that could help her succeed.

“I insisted upon struggling rather than simply asking for help and due to this, I received the lowest scores of my high school career,” Oyetayo wrote in her 209 Together scholarship essay.

This soon changed.

Oyetayo reached out to her parents and teachers for help. She also fought against

one of her well-ingrained vices – procrastination.

“I realized probably midfreshman year the reason PMSA is such a challenge is the workload. But the reason the workload becomes excessive is because everyone waits to do it… so really quickly I had to learn that if you have to do something just do it quickly and efficiently and then it’s done,” Oyetayo said.

She learned to silence any distractions, like her iPhone, and surrounded herself with work as she finished her assignments on her bed.

“So that way if I want to get distracted, I get distracted by more work,” Oyetayo said with a laugh.

Although Oyetayo is working as a cashier at Goodwill this summer, she says her parents didn’t want her to have a job throughout high school.

“I was really lucky because my parents were able to provide everything. They wanted me to focus on school so I looked at

school as being my job,” Oyetayo said.

Instead of working at the local grocery store like other high school students might, Oyetayo worked to earn as many scholarships as she could to help pay for college and also keep her grades up.

For the past three years, the Westchester resident earned straight A’s in all of her classes – even in her Advanced Placement classes. This hard work earned her a spot in PMSA’s National Honor Society.

Oyetayo also balanced her academics with participation in her church’s gospel choir, and various high school clubs like the multicultural club, key club and the prom committee.

Although Oyetayo plans to take the premed track in college, science is not the only subject that attracted her attention throughout high school.

“It was actually really strange that the classes that I ended up loving the most were those that I usually wouldn’t even have thought to take if I had an option at first.

Like American government,” she said.

Broadview officers honored

Officers recognized for work in Lindop crisis, saving two lives in a day

Officials from Lindop Elementary School District 92 offered heartfelt thanks to the Broadview Police Department for their help during and following a May 3 incident, when eight students were taken to the hospital after suffering asthma attacks.

The school officials thanked the officers during the public comment period at a July 16 Broadview Board of Trustees meeting.

The school officials were especially grateful for the compassion and care the officers showed for their students. And later during the meeting, village officials honored another police officer for saving two lives earlier that month.

According to a Chicago Tribune report published May 3, eight students suffered asthma attacks and were hospitalized on May 2. Broadview police and fire departments went in to investigate, conducted air quality tests and found that whatever caused the asthma attacks wasn’t related to air quality or any other environmental factors, so other students weren’t in danger.

Janiece Jackson, the school’s superintendent, told the board that she

appreciated the support the officers provided in the wake of the incident.

“At the time when tensions [between the community and the police] are high and trust is low, it’s good that there are still good people in the village of Broadview,” she said.

“We were able to lean on the Broadview Police Department without reservation,” she added. “[Police] Chief [Kevin] Eugling, Lt. [Thomas] Kostka and Detective [Richmond] Clayton, just to name a few, and the entire team rallied around us in support, because we indeed are family. On behalf of Lindop School District 92, we humbly thank you.”

Lindop Board of Education officials offered their thanks as well. Board President Carla Joiner-Herrod said that she agreed with the superintendent that the positive actions of their local police department deserved to be heralded.

“When you think about it, how many times do we hear right now about negative comments all over the country,

in Chicago, in regards to our police departments?” she said. “So I really thought how important it was to communicate good things about our police department.”

Joiner-Herrod said that she particularly appreciated the compassion the officers showed to students.

“We had a crisis, a crisis at our school … We needed the police to come in, and they came in with compassion, they came in without cost, and they came in as a partner,” she said, “and we really appreciate it.”

Joiner-Herrod also said that the police officers response was a learning experience for students.

“It was important,” she said. “Sometimes, you know, people are afraid of police officers.

Our police officers made sure that they went into the cafeteria and they interacted with our students so that, in community, they’re not just police officers, they’re police friends.”

Officer honored for saving two lives in a day Later during the meeting, the village gave a division award to Officer Steve Larson for saving two lives on July 3.

As Eugling explained to the board, he delivered “life-saving chest compressions” to an “unresponsive female subject” until paramedics got there.

And three hours later, when Larson responded to a call about a possible overdose, he was able to revive the person by administering Narcan, an anti-opioid spray that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose.

Eugling noted that Larson knew both of those skills thanks to the training Broadview police officers get from the Broadview Fire Department paramedics.
