Chief Valdimir Talley, hired in 2013, leaves behind complicated legacy By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

Maywood Police Chief Valdimir Talley has resigned after eight years at the helm, according to a statement released by village officials on July 16. In its statement, the village did not explain why Talley resigned. “The Village of Maywood would like to thank Chief Talley for his leadership and commitment to public safety for the citizens of our community,” wrote Maywood Village Manger Chasity Wells-Armstrong in the village’s statement. “We wish him well in his future endeavors.” Talley would have been eligible to collect a pension on his police chief job if he had stayed on the job until Dec. 31, sources said. Deputy Chief Elijah Willis has been named as acting police chief until a permanent successor is appointed. The village did not address when the process for searching for Talley’s successor will take place. Maywood Mayor Nathaniel George Booker declined to discuss the See CHIEF on page 7

Little Free Libraries popping up across Proviso Community members have built several of the lending libraries in Bellwood, Maywood within last several months By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

Bol, who died in 2018, predicted six years ago that at the rate they were growing, there would be more Little Free Libraries than there are McDonald’s restaurants. He was right. In 2020, there were roughly 38,000 McDonald’s restaurants across the globe compared to more than 100,000 registered Little Free

Libraries (that’s not including the ones that aren’t registered). Six years ago, the lending libraries were concentrated in well-heeled suburbs like Oak Park and Evanston. But in recent years, and particularly in the last several months, more and more Proviso Township residents like Kimyada Wellington have been getting in on the act. “The first time I ever saw one was when I went to St. Louis for a wedding and it was outside of a community center,” said Wellington, a former Maywood trustee. “And then, of course, I’d see them all the time whenever I would ride through Oak Park and River Forest. And all the while I’m like, See LIBRARIES on page 9
