Members of SEIU Local 73 demanding parity with other unions, higher wages, better working conditions By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
Roughly 2,500 Cook County workers have been demonstrating for more than two weeks now. They’ve had demonstrations in front of courthouses in Markham and Rolling Meadows, at the county building
Downtown, at the Cook County Jail and at Stroger Hospital. And on Friday morning, they came to Maywood. Several dozen workers were scattered near 1st Avenue and Maybrook Drive, the street leading to the Fourth Municipal District Maywood Courthouse. The workers, who are represented by SEIU Local 73, are demanding parity with other unions representing Cook County employees. In late June, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s office reached contract agreements with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), National Nurses
United and the Teamsters. One of the main points of contention is the Preckwinkle administration’s unwillingness to budge on its offer of an 8.5 percent pay raise that the union argues is inadequate to cover other proposed expenses. For instance, the union argued that there is currently no incentives rewarding longterm workers, no pay raises for the county’s lowest-paid workers, such as housekeepSee STRIKE on page 7
