Mayor, board majority seems intent on hiring former Kankakee mayor without search, which rankles some trustees By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

The Maywood Board of Trustees is currently attempting to replace former manager Willie Norfleet Jr., who resigned last month, with the former mayor of Kankakee — a move that doesn’t sit well with some members of the board, who believe the position should be posted and subject to a competitive search process. During a regular meeting on June 1, the village board voted unanimously on a severance package for Norfleet, which would pay him $38,764, which is the equivalent of two months’ salary and 160 hours of accrued but unused 2o21 vacation time, along with health benefits through Sept. 30. lication covers totaling roughly $2.1 million a year. Among the nine VFP suburbs, Berkeley, whose population of about 5,100 makes it the smallest suburb in the VFP readership, has the least number of properties at risk of flooding this year (245) and the least amount of flood damages a year ($1,100). Westchester, with 2,440 properties at risk of flooding and $618,000 in damages a year, is the suburb with the most properties at risk of flooding and the highest amount of flood damages among the nine suburbs. The new flooding model, called Flood Factor, was published in June 2020 by the

nonprofit research group First Street Foundation. Residents can go to floodfactor.com, search for a property’s address, a ZIP code or a municipality and see an area’s risk of flooding. The site measures flood risk on a scale of between 1 and 10, with 1 being the most minor flood risk and 10 being the most extreme flood risk. The properties most at risk for flooding in Proviso Township are located along Addison Creek and Silver Creek, two major streams that ultimately flow into the Gulf of Mexico; and near the Des Plaines River. Flood Factor’s model is now being used See FLOOD RISK on page 6
