A former Chinese restaurant at 1111 Bellwood Ave. in Bellwood will soon house a deli that will also feature Shee Goo rolled ice cream, a wide selection of wines, craft beers and video gambling. But the video gambling and, to a lesser extent, the alcohol have some residents worried.

During a May 17 regular Board of Trustees meeting, some people argued that the area where the deli, called Lucky Bernie’s, is looking to locate already has problems with loitering, drinking and violence that might be exacerbated by an establishment that sells liquor and gambling.

Lucky Bernie’s has at least four other locations in the Chicago suburbs that offer custom-made sandwiches. Peter Tsiolis, Bellwood’s economic development director, said in a May 21 interview that while video gambling machines are part of the business plan, Lucky’s main focus is on the deli aspect.

“The gaming portion of it is secondary,” said Tsiolis. “It’s a not a driving force, it’s not the important part.”

Triton men’s track team places 4th in nation at national championships The Triton men’s track and field team finished fourth in a 25-team during the NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held May 10 through May 12 at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, N.Y. “Coming into the season we knew we had a top-five program,” said Triton head coach Mike Olsen in a statement the college released earlier this month. “But we had to put in the work and being successful at the national championships was on our minds throughout the season. We had to make sure the team was peaking at the right time and based on the results, we definitely peaked when we needed to.”

The successful showing started with sophomore Gustavo Alvarez repeating as national champion in the pole vault while freshman Sam Cravatta took third in the event.

anchored the 4 x 100-meter relay which placed second. The team, which also featured Jacques Hayes, Antwane Thigpen and Joseph Hoffman, notched a time of 43.93.

Carpenter would eventually earn individual All-American status, along with the status as the NJCAA’s fastest man, claiming both the 100- and 200-meter dash national championships.

“We knew when DeMariye came to Triton that he was a very special sprinter,” Olsen said. “Going into the meet we weren’t sure what we would get out of him. He had battled some injuries in high school and also early this season. It just seemed that everything came together for him at the national championships.”

But despite the arguments of village officials, some residents still expressed reservations about the establishment, concerned that it might worsen living conditions in the neighborhood.

“Right now, there’s a lot of riffraff and we don’t want more riffraff coming in,” said Bellwood resident Charmaine O’Reilly, who lives across the street from the proposed establishment.

Carolyn Winston, who said she’s lived in the neighborhood for 20 years, echoed O’Reilly’s point.

“I don’t come out at night, because I don’t want to be hit on the head,” she said. “I don’t want to see grown men and women standing outside my door smoking.”

Maywood students showcase artistic, technical talents

Students at Irving Middle School, 805 S. 17th Ave. in Maywood, showed off their many talents during an ENCORE Spotlight Showcase on May 23.

The school’s ENCORE classes are elective courses designed to “foster students’ emotional awareness, self-expression, critical thinking, visual and media literacy, and civil responsibility,” according to the program’s web page.

Susan Abraham-Henderson, a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) teacher at Irving said that she trained for two weeks in Project Lead the Way, a nationally recognized STEM curriculum, in order to facilitate the ENCORE program.

On Wednesday, ENCORE students displayed some of the projects they pulled off with the skills they developed in the classes.

The projects included 360-degree rotating catapults, custom-made locker room organizers, miniature battery-powered cars, landscape paintings, pastel drawings inspired by famous street artist Keith Haring and original music compositions.

Governors across the country had until March 21 to submit to the U.S. Treasury Department a list of communities they had selected to nominate to become Opportunity Zones in their states.

The volume of nominations was limited to 25 percent of the total amount of low-income communities within the states.

On March 13, state Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch (7th) released a statement urging Gov. Rauner to nominate Maywood.

“With this designation from Governor Rauner, [Maywood] will be much more attractive to investors bringing new economic development and creating jobs for people who live right here in the community,” Welch noted at the time.

According to the IRS, Opportunity Zones give a range of tax benefits to investors who put their money in a Qualified Opportunity Fund — a vehicle designed for investing in Opportunity Zones.

“First, investors can defer tax on any prior gains until the earlier of the date on which an investment is sold or exchanged,

The unique instruction has the potential to change students’ lives, she said.

And the data is compelling.

According to U.S. Department of Commerce data, people who work in STEM careers earn roughly 26 percent more than non-STEM workers and those who have degrees in STEM, whether they work in a STEM field or not, typically earn more than people with non-STEM degrees.

In addition, “Employment in STEM occupations grew by 10.5 percent, or 817,260 jobs, between May 2009 and May 2015, compared with 5.2 percent net growth in non-STEM occupations,” according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Most of Maywood — except for a rectangular chunk of the village north of Main Street that spans from 9th Ave. east to the Forest Preserves, and some parts near the Eisenhower Expressway — has been designated an Opportunity Zone.

In his May 18 announcement, Gov. Rauner said that the creation of the new Opportunity Zones “is a really exciting opportunity for communities throughout Illinois,” adding that the zones “include some of the most underserved areas of the state that have the greatest potential for improvement.”

Rauner also noted that the zones “present an opportunity for private, taxfree investment in low-income areas with economic need, benefiting residents living in the zones and private investors.”

In a statement released in April, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin said that he was “very excited about the prospects for Opportunity Zones.

“Attracting needed private investment into these low-income communities will lead to their economic revitalization, and ensure

economic growth is experienced throughout the nation,” he said.

But some economic experts aren’t entirely sold on Opportunity Zones.

DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba featured Andre Watson, 23, on the department’s Facebook page on “Manhunt Monday.”

Watson, whose last known address was 1824 S. 3rd Ave. in Maywood, is wanted for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

The sheriff ’s office cautioned residents to call its Fugitive Apprehension Division if they encounter Watson.

One man dies during May 21 Bellwood shooting One man is dead after a shooting that happened on May 21 on the 2400 block of Randolph Ave. in Bellwood.

According to police dispatch records, calls of shots fired came in at around 9:23 p.m. on Monday. Roughly five minutes later, police reported that “two young, black males in black hoodies were seen running westbound” through a building on the 500 block of 25th Ave. The man sustained “severe gunshot wounds to the head and the arms,” police said. The victim was later identified by both police and the Cook County Medical Medical Examiner’s office as 21-year-old Solomon Russell III, who lived in on the block where the shooting took place.

Russell was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy conducted by the office on Tuesday confirmed that Russell died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said that there were numerous casings on the ground when they arrived.

The area near Oak and 25th was taped off sometime after 10 p.m.

So far, it isn’t known whether or not police have anyone in custody. Attempts to contact Bellwood police on Tuesday afternoon were unsuccessful.

Group publishes comprehensive list of summer activities for Maywood youth A local wellness organization has recently released a comprehensive listing of more than 40 summer activities and programs designed for young people, ages 5 to 24.

Proviso Partners for Health (PP4H), a coalition of local businesses, governments and nonprofits and other organizations designed to support community health and to address health equity, according to its website, released the list.

The document was compiled by PP4H’s built environment hub.

Nathaniel Booker, a PP4H member, said that the organization created the list because many area residents wanted to know about safe summer activities that are available for young people.

Four of the programs are paid opportunities for teenagers, Booker said.

Maywood is stage for living history On May 12, living historians made Civil War come alive again

Replica flags? Check. Period pieces like guns dating to the mid-19th Century? Check.

Actors dressed in historical clothing? Check.

Abraham Lincoln? Check.

Besides the heavy traffic and savory fumes from nearby Burger King and McDonald’s restaurants, community members had few barriers to imagining themselves transported to the year 1861 during the annual Civil War Living History, held May 12 at the corner of Lake Street and First Avenue in Maywood.

For around four hours, Company H of the 10th Illinois Infantry set up camp, complete with tents and a campfire, on the south lawn of the historic Home for Soldiers’ Widows — the historic structure built in 1924 to service the needs of elderly Civil War widows and orphans.

Throughout the morning and afternoon, “soldiers” ranking from private to captain mixed and mingled with close to 100 people of all ages — many from Maywood. There were even visits from a private from the United States Colored Troops 29th Infantry

and the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.

But don’t call this scene a Civil War reenactment. A re-enactment is the recreation of a particular battle. Although there were plenty of rifles on display, no one took up arms.

And despite the fact that a retinue of camping supplies were on display, this was not an encampment, since the “company” was not staying overnight. According to Vicki Haas, who has been coordinating this annual gathering since 2015, it’s called a living history for a reason.

Haas said that she first encountered the living historians who were in attendance on Saturday at Graue Mill and Museum in DuPage County. Drawn to their encampment at the 150-year-old grist mill and homestead, she asked if they could be persuaded to take their role-playing on the road. They relented and the rest is, well, history.

With almost a dozen men clothed in Union Army uniforms, women in hoop skirts, and the 10th Infantry flag flying, the historical happenings on the lawn were difficult to miss.

Manuel, an Uber driver, had several rides that brought him to the western suburbs

that afternoon and saw the living history as he was driving.

“I see this here and I had to pull over,” he said.

Manuel and other visitors chatted Civil War history with historians like Bob Winter, who portrays a first lieutenant. A longtime history buff, Winter joined Company H in 1989 because he wanted to teach others about the Civil War. Company H members do more than pretend to be Union Army soldiers. They do first-person history, portraying actual people who served during the war. The group elects people to a rank, then each historian chooses a soldier, making use of rosters in Illinois state archives to determine who they will play.

Jerry Bliss, who has been with the company for 19 years, is currently embodying Private Edwin Estabrook, one of the first 70 men to enlist in April 1861. When asked why he chose Estabrook, Bliss said that he was drawn to the fact that his alter ego was an ordinary man. He survived the war, returned home to Sandwich, Ill., and had a family.

Beyond their replica uniforms and antique rifles, the performers were a veritable

encyclopedia of Civil War knowledge.

Luther, who lives in Joliet, stopped by to portray a private from the 29th Infantry, an African American unit. Not only did he take pictures with guests, but he also shared stories of how much of what we know today, like the temporary insanity legal defense, was born of the Civil War era.

Soldiers weren’t the only historical portrayals that day. Kevin J. Wood made an appearance as President Abraham Lincoln.

Bearing an uncanny resemblance to the country’s 16th president, a Republican, Wood recited speeches, praised the acting of Edwin Booth (the elder brother of his assassin) and recounted how Andrew Johnson, a Democrat, wound up as his running mate in 1864.

During the Civil War, soldiers were allowed visits from their families when they reached a safe camp. Rachel Davidson kept the tradition alive by joining her husband, who portrays a Company H corporal, in the living history event. A teacher, Davidson said that she considers the living histories excellent ways to maintain public interest in our country’s history.

Maywood native’s ‘unlawful’ arrest caught on camera Footage shows Milwaukee Bucks guard Sterling Brown getting tased, arrested

The Milwaukee Police Department recently released video footage of the Jan. 26 arrest of Maywood native, Proviso East graduate and Milwaukee Bucks guard Sterling Brown.

There was significant buildup to last Wednesday’s release of the footage, with Milwaukee’s mayor, Tom Barrett, calling the video “disturbing” and “disconcerting.”

The footage shows police approaching Brown as he leaves a Milwaukee Walgreen’s at around 2 a.m. on Jan. 26. The footage shows an officer forcefully questioning Brown.

“Hi you doing? You got a driver’s license?”

Brown’s response is largely inaudible until the officer pushes brown while aggressively telling the player to “back up.”

“Don’t touch me,” Brown says. “Don’t touch me.”

The officer then chides Brown for parking across multiple handicap spaces and asks to see his ID. Some minutes later, at least four other officers arrive and question Brown, who stands in the same spot before the officers taser him.

According to a CBS News report: “Officers had been checking on a vehicle parked across two handicap spaces. Brown was not charged.

“Officers initially claimed Brown threatened them while they were writing him a ticket. At no point in the video does Brown appear to be threatening or violent to the officers before he was tased and arrested.”

Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales said in a prepared statement that the “department conducted an investigation into the incident which revealed members acted inappropriately, and those members were recently disciplined.”

On May 22, Brown’s attorney announced that his client is planning to file a civil lawsuit against the Milwaukee Police Department.

On May 23, the Milwaukee Bucks posted a statement that Brown drafted to their website.

involved. The lack of repercussions for the police officers involved in so many of these cases is offensive. This is a slap in the face to the victims’ families and communities.

Black men shouldn’t have to have their guard up and instantly be on the defensive when seeing a police officer, but it’s our reality and a real problem. There must be mutual respect and both sides have to figure out how to accomplish this.

There are no easy solutions to this problem, but there are strides that can be made to create change. I will do my part in helping to prevent similar incidents from happening to the minority community in the future.

This is bigger than me. My family, friends, legal team, Priority Sports, Milwaukee Bucks, the black community and the communities of all who stand against injustice plan to continue the fight. Peaceful support to ensure no further damage to our community is the only way to respond.

I know many of you will share my anger and frustration, but for our community to progress and grow, we need to build on what we already have and not destroy it. I will take legal action against the Milwaukee Police Department to continue forcing change in our community.
