Local biz sues big bank Sha-Poppin of Westchester files class action lawsuit against JP Morgan Chase over handling of PP funds

A Westchester business has filed a federal class action lawsuit against JP Morgan Chase, alleging that the giant bank unfairly prioritized large corporations over small businesses in the process of administering the first round of federal Paycheck Protection Program loans earlier this month.

Stacey Hawkins-Armstrong, the owner and manager of Sha-Poppin Gourmet Popcorn, 10352 Roosevelt Rd. in Westchester, said that she has been a JP Morgan Chase client for well over 20 years and had already held a small business account with the lender at the time she applied for PPP funding.

The funding, which included a $349 billion loan program for small businesses with fewer than 500 employees, was part of the $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) signed into law by President Donald Trump on March 27.

The data also showed that Melrose Park has become the new COVID-19 hotspot in Proviso Township, replacing Bellwood. Melrose Park now has the highest number of

total cases, as well as the highest COVID-19 infection rate, among the township’s 13 municipalities.

Hotspot from page 1 Health, there were 6,593 total COVID-19 tests administered within the 13 primary zip codes that span Proviso Township, with 1,613 total positive diagnoses resulting from those tests.

That’s an increase of 55 percent in both the number of tests administered and the number of positive cases reported from April 23, just a week-and-a-half ago.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, the number of COVID-19 deaths in Proviso Township municipalities rose 41 percent, from 29 to 41, between April 23 and May 2.

Bellwood, which has a population of roughly 19,000, had led Proviso Township suburbs in both the number of COVID-19 cases and the rate of infection since the county and state started closely monitoring COVID-19 cases in late March.

Melrose Park now has both the highest number of COVID-19 cases and the highest infection rate among Proviso suburbs.

As of May 2, the village of roughly 25,000 residents had 387 confirmed COVID-19 cases and an infection rate of 1,523 per 100,000, according to the county public health department data.

The IDPH data, however, puts the total number of COVID-19 cases in Melrose Park at 271. So far, it isn’t clear why there’s such a stark difference in the two agencies’ data. In other suburbs, the difference between the county and state data is relatively slight.

One reason for the difference could be that the state tallies the number of COVID-19 tests and positive cases by suburbs’ primary zip code while the county tallies by individual municipalities. Unlike smaller suburbs, Melrose Park shares zip codes with at least four other nearby suburbs.

Regardless of the discrepancy, though, Melrose Park area experienced a significant increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases between April 23 and May 2.

According to the IDPH, the village’s primary zip code, 60160, saw increases of 75 percent and 83 percent in the number of COVID-19 tests administered and confirmed positive cases,

respectively, between April 23 and May 2.

The number of tests administered in that week-and-a-half period in 60160 went from 476 to 834 while the number of confirmed cases in that zip code reported to IDPH went from 148 to 271.

Meanwhile, in Bellwood, the number of COVID-19 tests administered increased by only 45 percent between April 23 and May 2, going from 507 to 733. The number of confirmed positive cases increased during that period by around 35 percent, going from 178 to 241, according to IDPH data.

Businesses reopen, but with readjustments

Ahead of COVID-19 reopening May 1, Proviso Township retailers cut hours, lost hours and switched business models

On May 1, retail stores that were deemed non-essential and ordered to close during much of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home measure reopened.

A range of retailers — from beauty supply stores to sporting goods shops — began taking online orders for pick-up and delivery on Friday. State parks and golf courses also reopened.

Many area businesses are breathing a sigh of relief for the soft reopening, which is accompanied by a requirement that all residents wear masks in public. But not all local establishments are feeling the effects of the COVID-19 crisis equally.

For Cindy Hildebrand, who co-owns and manages Hildebrand Sporting Goods, 1809 Roosevelt Rd. in Broadview, the reopening hasn’t been without some drastic readjustments.

Hildebrand Sporting Goods has been selling team outfits, custom-made plaques and trophies, and sporting equipment for 70 years. Now, with most organized sports cancelled due to COVID-19, the family-owned company is switching, at least temporarily, to a new business model.

“We’re now selling custom face masks for large institutions that may want their logo on them,” Hildebrand said Friday, adding that since Pritzker announced his stay-athome measure on March 21, employees have been working remotely from home.

Hildebrand started selling its custom masks curbside on Friday (they’re also available for individual purchase). Store hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. As for the future, Hildebrand said that she and her relatives are waiting to see what happens with sports.

“Team sports is about 90 percent of our business,” she said. “We’re hoping that baseball can possibly come back in a little bit. I’m not sure about what will happen with football, basketball and soccer. I’m not sure what the future will hold for those sports.”

Jeff Conrad, of Gem Electric Supply Inc., 1913 Roosevelt Rd., said that the company, which has four locations in the city and suburbs, never closed during the stay-athome order, but it did drastically reduce its operating hours — from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the past, to 7:30 to noon, now. Fortunately, Conrad said, the business hasn’t laid off any employees yet.

“We cut down to half-days, which was a big thing for us,” Conrad said. “A lot of our guys were still trying to come in the afternoon.

The change in hours was a big shock.”

Conrad said that his business, like most others, has implemented a variety of safety measures since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Workers wear masks and routinely clean the small space, the company enforces social distancing and customers have the option of

curbside pickup.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” Conrad said of the COVID-19 crisis.

Conrad said his business has applied for federal Paycheck Protection Program funding and is hoping that the money offsets some of the losses.

“We hopefully will get that loan and make up for some missed time,” he said. “People need to start working. They need to get stuff done. We’ve been somewhat of a necessity as, far as selling electrical material, so business is starting to tick up. More and more people are wanting to upgrade services on houses and electricians are starting to work again.”

Dawood Burhani, who owns Jamali Kopy Kat Printing Inc., 2501 St. Charles Rd. in Bellwood, said that his 21-year-old business successfully applied for PPP funding, which

should allow him to pay some bills.

“Our business has taken a hit obviously, but it hasn’t been as significant as I thought,” he said. “Luckily, we had enough orders in the pipeline. In April, we did OK. I’m still waiting to see what happens in May.” Burhani said that Kopy Kat has been forced to reduce its operating hours from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The store, which prints everything from wedding invitations to church bulletins, did lose one employee, who secured a union apprenticeship.

“We’re looking to hire somebody who has graphic design and managerial experience,” Burhani said. “They would be here by themselves at times, so they have to be trustworthy.”

Burhani said that the new reopening rules enacted Friday haven’t affected his business drastically, since he had already been limiting in-store visitors and most of his business is delivery or pickup, anyway.

Askale Facey Phillips, the co-owner of Kingston Marktet Caribbean and African Groceries, 1401 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, said that the establishment has actually seen a boost in business due to COVID-19. For one, since it’s considered an essential business, the store never closed in the first place.

“There are many Jamaicans and Africans in this area, so they treat this as if it’s hurricane season,” said Phillips, who along with her husband, Mark, opened the grocery store in 2019.

“When hurricane season is approaching, you stock up on canned goods and stuff. So, COVID-19 has actually affected our business in a positive way. The Jamaican and African communities, and the Maywood community in general, still support us.”

Phillips said that the store has had to adjust its hours of operation, but it’s still open seven days a week. They’re open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. She said that curbside pickup can be arranged.

Jean Rodgers, wife of former Broadview mayor, dies at 86 Rodgers lived in Broadview for more than 60 years

Jean V. Rodgers, the wife of former Broadview mayor John Robert Rodgers, has died. She was 86 years old.

The village of Broadview’s Board of Trustees, along with Broadview Mayor

Katrina Thompson, announced Rodgers’ death in a May 2 Facebook post.

According to her obituary, John and Jean Rodgers were married for more than 62 years. Jean was a freelance writer and an active member of the Broadview community, where she lived for more than 60 years.

“Jean was a tremendous support to her husband, John, as he served as Trustee and later Mayor of Broadview,” the obituary states.

Rodgers, the third mayor in Broadview’s

history, presided over the development and opening of Broadview Village Square in 1994.

According to a 1993 Chicago Tribune article, Rodgers believed the development may have been “the biggest change in Broadview’s land-use profile since the village’s farsighted, post-World War II decision to commit roughly half of the landlocked village’s 2.1 square miles to industry.”

John “meticulously and devotedly cared

for and tenderly loved Jean with a great sense of humor and charm for many years,” according to Jean’s obituary.

The family will hold a private Mass at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia. Interment will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hillside.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Masses be said for the repose of her soul, the obituary states.

Emily Boulware Foster dies at 101 Foster’s life spanned both Spanish Flu and COVID-19 pandemics

Emily Boulware Foster, a well-respected church mother known for her uncanny ability to make the Bible relatable and interesting to young people, died on April 10. She was 101.

According to her granddaughter, Twamena Crosby, Foster died from pneumonia at Lexington Nursing Home in Elmhurst.

Crosby said she doesn’t believe Foster’s death was related to COVID-19.

Foster was born Oct. 7, 1918, in Butler, Ga. — the youngest of eight children conceived

by Exodue and Emma Taylor. All seven of her brothers and sisters preceded her in death October 1918 was the deadliest month of the Spanish Flu pandemic. Roughly a quarter of the 697,000 Americans who died from the viral disease perished that month, according to a local news report. In towns and cities across the country, churches and schools and businesses closed. People quarantined in their homes and donned face masks in public.

Foster would eventually move to Maywood,

where she attended Proviso East High School before attending Northern Illinois University, where she completed courses required to teach head start and studied child evangelism, according to her obituary.

Foster worked as a teacher’s aide at Proviso East for 10 years, a preschool teacher and a switchboard operator at Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park, among other jobs.

In 1934, Foster married James Henry Graham. The couple had two children — Donald Sr. and Olivia Lee Graham.

Outside of work, Foster was an anchor at Progressive Life-Giving Word Cathedral (then known as Maywood Church of God In Christ, the first church established in Maywood that was part of the COGIC denomination).

At her church, which has since moved to Hillside, Foster led many children’s clubs, including the junior choir, the Youth Department, the Good News Club and the Purity Girls and Purity Ushers, among others.

It wasn’t until 1955, when she was nearly 40 years old, that Foster “walked into her purpose to teach child evangelism,” her obituary states.

“A lot of people who lived in Maywood grew up under her teaching,” said Crosby, 59. “She ran Vacation Bible School, when we used to have it in the tent. She used to do a thing called the Good News Club, where we’d

In 1958, Foster received her Missionary License. Her zeal to evangelize and heal the poor and suffering extended beyond the church walls. She helped feed the homeless as a member of the Maywood Regional Christian Women’s Council and prayed for the sick at Cook County Hospital.

Donald Williams Jr. dies at 68 Donald Williams Jr., the son of Maywood’s second African-American mayor and a wellrespected realtor in the village, died on April 29. He was 68.

The cause was cancer, said his daughter, District Commissioner

Maywood Park Dawn Williams.

“He was respected and loved by a lot of people,” Dawn said during a May 1 phone interview. “A lot of business people in Maywood liked him. He was just loved by a lot of people and very personable.”

Williams Jr. graduated from Proviso East High School in 1969 before enlisting in the Army. He was stationed in Korea. At East, he was on the track and field team and in the choir.

“He loved movie soundtracks,” Dawn said. “When people would went into his real estate office, they’d hear them playing in the background.”

His passion for music extended to his church, Broadview Missionary Baptist in

Broadview, where Williams also sang in the choir.

“Whenever someone needed help, he was willing to lend a hand,” Dawn said of her father, who along with working as a real estate appraiser, property manager and realtor, was also a pharmacy technician back in the 1970s.

Williams, who was married to District 89 school board member Dianne Williams, had nine children, Dawn said.

Williams’ father, Donald Williams Sr., was the second black mayor of Maywood and a longtime realtor, as well. Williams Jr. was the second-oldest of the former mayor’s six children. His older sister is former state representative, former Cook County Recorder of Deeds and current Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough.

The family will only hold a visitation for Williams Jr. that will be limited to 10 people in the room at a time. Face coverings will be required to attend.

The visitation will be held Friday, May 8, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Wallace Broadview Funeral Home, 2020 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Broadview.

Lawsuit from page 1 to be distributed on a “first-come, first -served” basis to qualifying small businesses in order to provide them with roughly two months’ worth of financial assistance to cover basic expenses like payroll, benefits and rent.

Most of the long will be forgiven, as long as the business spends at least 75 percent of the loan on payroll and agrees not to cut the wages and salaries of workers making less than $100,000 in the first year of the loan by more than 25 percent, the lawsuit explains.

Otherwise, “the loan matures in two years and carries a 1 percent interest rate.”

According to the lawsuit filed on behalf of Sha-Poppin, Hawkins-Armstrong, whose business employs five people, including herself, “diligently attempted to submit ShaPoppin’s application through Chase’s online portal” the very day the PPP loan application window opened on April 3.

But the website “returned error messages each time she attempted to submit her application, with instructions indicating that she should not call Chase customer services.”

Meanwhile, multimillion dollar corporations like sandwich chain Potbelly, pharmaceutical company MannKind and steakhouse chain Ruth’s Chris were jumping the line for federal loans, as JP Morgan Chase made “all efforts to prioritize processing the loan applications of its favored customers first” while deciding to “deal with the remainder later, if they ever managed to make it through Defendant’s failing website.”

During an interview earlier this month, Hawkins-Armstrong said that the error messages “continued for days, several times a day.” Eventually, the business owner said that she got a call from a Chase Midwest vice president who “was apologetic that my application didn’t go through. Her answer was that, if I wanted, I could change banks and she’d understand, which was really unacceptable to me. It lets me know that they really don’t care.”

Hawkins-Armstrong ended up applying for a PPP loan through a much smaller institution — Seaway, a division of SelfHelp Federal Credit Union. She said she successfully secured $6,000 through Seaway, much less than she needs.

“As a result of Defendants’ actions, ShaPoppin is now at a severe risk of having to lay off its employees and shutter its business — the very result Congress sought to avoid in creating a first-come, first-served loan program to be deployed by [the Small Business Administration] banking partners with all deliberate speed,” the lawsuit explains. “At minimum, Sha-Poppin lost out on $19,000 in PPP loan funds it would have otherwise received, but for Defendants’ misconduct.”

revenue of $450 million, 5,700 employees and 150 locations across the country received two $10 million PPP loans, the lawsuit notes. The company eventually returned the loans after public outrage, “but the damage was done.”

Many of its workers — including busboys, dishwashers and hosts — have already been laid off, the lawsuit states.

The federal lawsuit, which was filed April 24, in the Northern District of Illinois, Easter Division, claims that Chase, the retail banking company of parent company JP Morgan, knowingly made it more difficult for smaller businesses to apply for the loans through a “carefully executed plan.”

Earlier this month, Welch created a Change.org petition to demand that Chase and other large banks “treat black and brown businesses equitably during the COVID-19 crisis.” As of April 30, the petition had garnered 261 signatures.

directions on how to handle customers, and to discourage branch employees from getting involved in customers’ PPP loan applications. As a result, Chase’s favored customers (as well as its parent company’s favored customers) got the special treatment they desired.”

The bank had an incentive to reach this outcome, the lawsuit claims. For each loan processed and approved, “the bank would receive an origination fee of 5 percent on loans up to $350,000; 3 percent on loans

between $350,000 and $2 million; and 1 percent on loans between $2 million and $10 million.”

“If they know that they get 1 percent off of $20 million or 5 percent off of $20,000, they’re going with the former,” Hawkins-Armstrong said during an interview on April 30. “For them to give the concierge treatment to those large corporations that should not have been involved with this money in the first place was disgraceful.”

The lawsuit states that “nearly all of the 8,500 commercial and private banking clients who applied for a loan got one” while “only 18,000 [or roughly 6 percent] of more than 300,000 small -business banking customers who applied through Chase’s retail bank, where they normally did business, got loans, according to the bank.

“In all, Chase handed out $14 billion through the program — more than any other bank, but still less than half of the $36 billion that customers had sought.”

The lawsuit names JP Morgan Chase and three other corporations, including Ruth’s Chris Steak House Operations, as defendants and seeks an unspecified amount of damages for the defendants’ “efforts to cheat Plaintiff and countless small businesses out of their right to apply for and receive federal stimulus funding in a moment of national crisis.”

So far, at least 100 other small businesses have joined Hawkins-Armstrong’s class action lawsuit, but she said she’s hoping more small businesses in Proviso Township, particularly black and brown businesses, come on board.

“I’m getting overwhelmed with emails and calls from business owners in different states who are upset and want to be part of this,” she said. “Surprisingly, though, no one in Proviso has reached out to me, yet.”

Hawkins-Armstrong’s lawsuit against Chase is just one among “a series of lawsuits lodged by small businesses against big banks such as Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Bancorp citing unfair business practices and false advertising,” according to an article in USA Today.

The federal government recently passed an additional $310 billion of PPP funds for small businesses, as part of a $484 billion COVID-19 emergency funding bill signed by President Trump on April 24. Because she already secured a loan in the first round of funding, Hawkins-Armstrong is not eligible for this second round of PPP funds.

Hillside nursing home workers threaten to strike Workers at 40 Chicago area facilities, including Symphony at Aria, demand higher wages, hazard pay

Workers at 40 Chicago area nursing home facilities, including Symphony at Aria, 4600 N. Frontage Rd. in Hillside, could go on strike on May 8 in order to demand higher wages, hazard pay and adequate staffing levels.

“This crisis is not new,” said Greg Kelley, the president of SEIU Healthcare Illinois, which represents the frontline workers, who include receptionists, cooks, nursing assistants and other employees.

“Our members have been working in difficult circumstances for a long time,” Kelley said. “They’ve been underpaid, overworked and understaffed. COVID-19 has brought this reality to the forefront. It’s made a difficult job a dangerous job.”

The workers delivered the strike notices to facilities on April 27. Kelley said that the workers voted “overwhelmingly” to authorize a strike.

No workers at Symphony at Aria could be reached by phone on Wednesday, but an anonymous worker at Oak Park Oasis, another area nursing home where workers could strike, said that about 51 frontline workers at the facility plan on going on strike on May 8.

The worker at Oak Park Oasis confirmed that they’re experiencing conditions similar to Tamika Haynes, a certified nursing assistant at Alden Debes Manor in Rockford.

“I’ve been on the job for 17 years and make only $16.76 an hour,” she said during a videoconference on April 29. “In most professions that require training and experience, you expect to get decent wages

as the years go by. Not us. We’re just getting deeper in the hole. And I have a lot of coworkers who make less.”

According to data released by the Illinois Department of Public Health, as of April 24, there have been 12 reported cases of COVID-19 and two deaths at Symphony at Aria.

In a statement released April 27, SEIU officials said that the union members’ contract covering the 40 facilities is set to expire on May 1.

“Workers were hopeful that the Illinois Association of Health Care Facilities would agree to a one-year agreement with modest and reasonable accommodations to address the extreme risks and challenges workers now face as a result of working on the frontline of a pandemic,” according to the statement.

The workers are calling for $15 an hour and $16 an hour for CNA’s; a 50 percent hazard pay bonus for working during the pandemic; an additional 80 hours of paid sick leave for COVID-19 or related illnesses; better training; more personal protective equipment; and “provisions for continued health care coverage for any vulnerable workers who have to take leave from their job to protect themselves and their families.”

Kelley said that a federal mediator has gotten involved in the negotiations.

“Today is our first virtual face-to-face negotiation for some time,” Kelley said during Wednesday’s videoconference.

“We’ve indicated that we’re prepared to meet as often as necessary to avoid a strike.

Maywood approves FY 2021 budget Board also passes amendments to FY 2020 budget during April 21 meeting

During a regular meeting on April 21, the Maywood Board of Trustees unanimously voted to approve the FY 2021 budget. The village’s annual budget cycle runs from May 1 through April 30.

The FY 2021 composite budget, which includes the total of all of the village’s separate funds, is $50,668,676. That’s less than a 1 percent increase (roughly $116,000) from the composite budget for FY 2020, village officials said.

The FY 2021 budget for the village’s corporate fund, around three-quarters of

which comprises the budgets for the police and fire departments, was $30,480,633. As with the composite budget, the change from the village’s FY 2020 corporate fund budget was roughly flat.

During the April 21 meeting, Maywood Village Manager Willie Norfleet, Jr., said that the FY 2021 budget includes a range of new hires and restructured jobs, including the following: § Part-time maintenance/minibus driver (new hire) § Part-time detention center clerk in police department (new hire) § Records administrator (upgrade form record supervisor to record administrator) § Revenue manager (promotion of water supervision into revenue manager) § Permit clerk (creating new position) § Chief building inspector (a new title changing from an opening as result of retirement) § Administrative hearing clerk (same

situation, retired person and replacement) § The FY 2021 budget also pays for a series of construction projects, including: § $196,000 to resurface 7th Avenue; $121,000 to resurface Chicago to Rice; and $575,000 to resurface Bataan to Lexington. § $970,000 worth of alley improvements ($541,000 from the federal government and $427,500 from the village as a matching share of the federal grant). That includes alleys between 19th, 20th, Randolph and Oak; 21st, 20th, Washington and Randolph; and between 21st, 20th, Randolph and Oak. § The village will fund two major street improvement projects from an increase in the Motor Fuel Tax fund, from $618,585 in FY 2020 to $752,788 in FY 2021. Those projects include improvements to Huron, between 1st and the Des Plaines River; and 19th Ave., from Congress to Harrison St. § Roughly $600,000 from Community Development Block Grant funding will go to refurbish Warren Street, from 19th to 21st

avenues. § Budget amendments The board also passed budget amendments for the FY 2020 budget. According to Lanya Satchell, the village’s finance director, the village typically considers budget amendments around this time of year. The amendments “reflect the village’s actual revenue collections and expenditures, with projections of same for the balance of the fiscal year.”

The amendments showed an increase of $536,129 in increased revenues from building permits, video gaming and property sales.

The amendments also showed a net increase in expenses of $515,214, due to a variety of “notable adjustments,” perhaps most notably an increase of around $435,000 in costs related to funding the E-911 Ike Center, the centralized emergency dispatch and communication system for Maywood and Broadview that opened last year.

Village Pride, Village Wide revamped Annual event becomes month-long anti-litter campaign, helped by mobile app

The COVID-19 crisis may have postponed indefinitely the village of Maywood’s annual Village Pride, Village Wide cleanup event, but a new and slightly different version of the initiative has Village Pride, Village Wide taking place all throughout the month of May. During a regular meeting on April 21, the Maywood Board of Trustees voted 5-2 to redeploy the $6,500 that was budgeted for the one-day event this year toward the purchase of promotional items, a range of materials that will be purchased from Home Depot and the purchase of a one-year, $2,000 license of an app called Litterati.

The app is designed by a data science company of the same name “that uses technology to develop, identify, map and collect litter all around the world,” according to the master services agreement.

Residents can download the Litterati application on their mobile phones via the Apple Store or Google Play. The app allows them to photograph any piece of litter they come across, discard the litter and tag the

photo, and invite other residents to keep the community clean.

The app also tracks the amount of litter that is picked up.

The month-long initiative will kick off on May 1, with the launch of the Litterati app. According to a draft calendar, residents will be able to engage either privately or online in a range of other activities that are designed to ensure that people are socially distancing while they’re participating.

Those activities include things like planting gardens, cleaning parks and picking up litter on the streets and sidewalks, among other initiatives that would have otherwise taken place on a single day. The revised Village Pride, Village Wide comes as the annual one-day cleanup event, which was originally scheduled for April 7, was postponed to April 30. That date had also been postponed due to COVID-19.

Since March 21, the state of Illinois

has been under a stay-at-home order designed to slow the spread of COVID-19, the infectious respiratory disease caused by coronavirus. Since its initial implementation, Gov. J.B. Pritzker has extended the stay-athome measure until at least May 30.

During the measure, all public gatherings of 50 or more people have been banned and all non-essential activity has been prohibited, which has meant the closure of many businesses except those like restaurants and grocery stores that provide essential services, and the cancellation of activities like Village Pride, Village Wide, which draws several hundred participants each year.

Earlier this month, Pritzker announced that his administration was easing the restriction to allow more businesses beyond restaurants and grocery stores to re-open on May 1, but with certain precautions, such as the requirement that all patrons wear

masks.

“This is about the community taking this as an initiative to clean up our community,” said Trustee Nathaniel George Booker, who presented the initiative to the board for approval at the April 21 meeting.

Jeff Kirschner, the creator of Litterati, explained in a Ted talk that he created the app in order to bring litter, which he said has been “blending into the background of our lives,” to the forefront. He said that the data collected through mobile technology can help inform public policy.

Booker said that members of the village’s Environmental and Beautification Commission, the Maywood Park District, the Maywood Public Library, and the nonprofit Proviso Partners for Health (PP4H), among other entities, have teamed up to facilitate the month-long anti-litter campaign.

The planning group said that they’re currently in need of sponsors and volunteers.
