Residents in and around Proviso Township are grappling for solutions after yet another 15-year-old Proviso East student from Maywood died by suicide — the third 15-year-old East student from Maywood to die by suicide in less than six months.

The most recent suicide happened on April 5. The victim was a 15-year-old African American female who was a member of the girls’ basketball team at the high school.

In November 2018, a 15-year-old Hispanic female, who was also a member of the girls’ basketball team at East, died by suicide.

Her death was followed by the death of a 15-year-old Hispanic male who lived in Maywood, attended East and died by suicide last December.

Voter turnout during the April 2 Consolidated Election was low across Proviso Township. In Bellwood only 14.5 percent of registered voters cast ballots while in Broadview, Maywood and Melrose Park, the turnout rate was 17.5 percent, 14.5 percent and 10 percent, respectively.

Dominican University journalism student Sabrina Henderson went out on Election Day to ask voters, candidates and campaign volunteers (anyone, really, who was seen near polling places and wanted to talk about what motivated them to get involved in this great civic tradition).

EAST SUICIDES

Community unites from page 3 High Schools District 209 employee and cofounder of the nonprofit Best of Proviso Township, which helped facilitate a community meeting held April 7 at Proviso East.

The meeting followed a Saturday night vigil for the 15-year-old held in front of her Maywood home that was attended by D209 administrators, faculty, staff and board members, along with clergymen and other community leaders.

Many of the estimated 100 people who packed Proviso East’s Social Room on Sunday shared their own mental health challenges.

“I’m a 6-year active duty military veteran,” said Anthony Clark, an Oak Park teacher and community activist who founded the nonprofit Suburban Unity Alliance to address issues of racial equity and social justice.

“I have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,” he said. “I was diagnosed in 2007, when I was shot and when I saw my best friend in the service shot right in front of me. I’ve seen death. I’ve seen violence. I’ve had to engage in violence. Many of the symptoms I experience as an individual living with PTSD — from depression to anxiety to hypervigilance to violence to apathy to numbness to an inability to truly communicate and build relationships — I’m seeing in our youth. But I was in a war zone.”

Clark said that people should stop stigmatizing mental illness and the many forms of treating it. He said he attends therapy each month “and I’m proud to say that.”

“I was her,” said Regina Dillard — a Proviso East alum and the owner of Inner Sanctum Wellness, a holistic health business — in reference to the young girl who died last week.

Dillard said her family has a history of clinical depression that “nobody wanted to talk about,” adding that “we do ourselves, our children a disservice when we don’t talk about it.” Dillard explained that depression “is not who [a person is],” but a condition that people experience.

Posing solutions The meeting’s facilitators, Jackson and Best of Proviso co-founder Randall McFarland, encouraged attendees to write down their proposed solutions on a large sheet of paper placed at each table. Those ideas, the facilitators said, will then be shared out with people who listed their contacts on a sign-in sheet.

There was no shortage of ideas, which ran the gamut. Churches should work together and open their doors more often to young people. Schools should be open during Spring Break. Parents should be more vigilant when monitoring their kids’ social media accounts for signs that a child is considering suicide or going through a

Heroin, Xanax discovered in personnel office at West Hillside Police chief sent letter to D209 officials demanding answers

Proviso Township High Schools District 209 officials have launched an investigation into the recent discovery of illegal substances found in “an office accessible to security personnel” at Proviso West in Hillside late last month, according to a statement D209 officials released on April 2.

According to the statement, the preliminary results of that investigation “affirm that that Proviso West security personnel informed the school liaison officer, a full-time Hillside Police Officer, of a file cabinet in an office accessible to security personnel which allegedly contained items seized from searches by school personnel.”

The school liaison officer took possession

of the substances on March 22, D209 offi cials said. In a letter Hillside Police Chief Joseph Lukaszek emailed to D209’s administration on March 27, the substances tested positive for heroin, which police said was “packaged for delivery.”

Lukaszek stated that “pills of Xanax” were also located. Most of the items police discovered, however, “are related to cannabis offenses,” he said. The chief also said that his department has photos of the items and that they were “removed from the desk” of a former security guard at the high school.

A Hillside detective, Sgt. Carlo Viscioni, told WGN 9 reporters that his department learned about the substances from a tip and not from school officials.

“The first thing they should have done, whether it is located, confiscated or discovered it on the premises is contacted the full-time police liaison,” Viscioni said, adding that Hillside police had “no knowledge this stuff was there until we were contacted.”

In his letter, Chief Lukaszek said that “at this point, I am demanding an explanation as to where this heroin came from.”

According to the D209 statement, the district’s “internal communication protocol for urgent matters was not followed, causing a delay in the response of district personnel to the matter.

“Once the matter became known, in a manner inconsistent with effective communication of such issues, an

immediate investigation was launched and open communication between district administration and the Hillside police chief was established.”

District officials said that they’ve “communicated to all staff regarding expectations related to the seizure of contraband, the associated risks with handling these materials, and the proper notification and transfer of said contraband to proper authorities.”

They added that school personnel “will receive more in-depth training regarding such matters in partnership with law enforcement in the near future.”

Chief Lukaszek could not be reached for comment last week.

More details have emerged about the massive industrial and retail development going up on the site of the soon-to-be demolished Maywood Park Racetrack, 8600 W. North Ave. in Melrose Park.

According to multiple reports, Atlanta, Ga.-based Ridgeline Property Group will develop the 42-acre site — “a three-building, 623,000-square-foot industrial project” that will be called the Chariot Logistics Center, according to a report published by RE Journal.

Harris Architects, based in Palatine, and Kimley-Horn, based in Raleigh, N.C., will design the project. Oak Brook-based Krusinski Construction will build the project, which could be completed by the end of this year, RE Journal reports.

“Larry Goldwasser, Colin Green, Matt Cowie and Michelle Maguire of Cushman & Wakefield will provide leasing services for the project,” RE Journal explains. “The leasing team anticipates strong interest from e-commerce, last-mile service providers, food/cold storage, manufacturing, warehouse and distribution tenants.”

The village of Melrose Park’s Board of Trustees annexed the Maywood Park Racetrack property in December 2018 — three years after the venerable racetrack closed.

Village officials expect the project to generate an estimated 400 construction jobs and up to 700 permanent jobs once the development is finished.

Steven Hunter hosts first spring break hoops camp at East The NBA ambassador and Pirate wants to hold multiple camps a year

Proviso East alum and retired NBA center Steven Hunter, 37, is hosting first annual Spring Break Give-Back Basketball Camp over the weekend at his Maywood alma mater.

More than 100 young people in first through eighth grade gathered in the field house at Proviso East to participate in the camp, which presented them with a range of skillenhancing drills.

Sergio Turner, Jr., Hunter’s 13-year-old cousin who attends Burnside Academy in Chicago, said Saturday that he’ll apply some of the skills he’s acquiring at the two-day camp against his AAU competition.

“I learned that when we pass, we have to step so our opponents don’t steal the ball,” Turner said. “So, I learned how not to get the ball stolen.”

Ashlee Horton was visiting from Minnesota. Her grandparents live in the area and she’s here for the weekend, she said.

“My dad signed me up,” Horton said, before lauding the camp. “I like how we’re moving the ball a lot, trying new things and meeting new people.”

Hunter, who has hosted skills camps in Bellwood, said that he was motivated to host his first camp at Proviso East after discovering “a lack of alumni presence among our kids in Maywood.” That lack could be leading to a decline in the area’s basketball talent pool, he said.

The weekend camp is just the latest iteration of community initiatives that Hunter — a former has led in the Proviso Township area. Hunter, who played in the NBA from 2001 until 2011, is currently an ambassador for the Phoenix Suns, who he played for in 200405.

Plumber pioneer from page 1 Carter — a 2007 graduate of Proviso East High School and the sister of Proviso East basketball stars Jevon Carter (now in the NBA) and Keith Carter (who played college ball for Valparaiso) — shared how she got involved in the plumbing trade and her hopes for getting other young women involved, as well. Her reason for opening up? So that more women can follow her into the trades.

How did you get to where you are now?

I found an ad on Facebook four or five years ago and I basically signed up for this program with the Chicago Women in Trades.

That organization gave me an opportunity to try different trades like plumbing, electrical, etc. I liked plumbing the most.

Chicago Women in Trades helped me prep for my [entry exam], got me training and let me know what I had to do to enter the workforce, which is predominantly male.

I’m now in my fourth year with Local 130.

I had to take a test that included practical math, reading and mechanical reasoning.

Those tests focus on things like fractions, ratios, measurements, square roots, etc.

What were you doing before stumbling on that Facebook ad?

I had graduated East in 2007. From there, I went off to Calumet College in Indiana

Why is our township named Proviso?

The story of the name’s origin goes back to the 1840’s when a Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania, David Wilmot, proposed

a ban on slavery in any state acquired during the MexicanAmerican War. Known as the “Wilmot Proviso,” it would have prevented slavery’s expansion.

The Wilmot Proviso passed the House of Representatives, which, at that time, included Illinois Congressman Abraham Lincoln, who supported the Proviso. The Wilmot Proviso was ultimately rejected in 1847 by the Senate.

Although defeated, the position inspired people all the way to the western edges of Cook County, where our local forefathers were just forming our local township government.

The township was briefly named Taylor Township, after President Zachary Taylor, a Whig, and backer of the Wilmont Proviso.

When President Taylor became ill and died while in office, Taylor Township quickly changed its name to Proviso Township.

The evidence of a 10-mile house, which would have been used to shelter escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad (west

bank of the Des Plaines River, present day Maywood at Lake/1st Ave.), indicates this area was likely supportive of the popular slogan of the time, “Free soil, free speech, free labor and free men!” This “Free Soil Party” was created and would eventually be instrumental in the founding of the Republican Party.

In 1850, our fledgling Proviso Township is said to have had 482 residents. As the landscape began to change in Proviso, the political landscape of America began to change, too.

Just four years after the Chicago and Galena Railroad established a roundhouse at the Des Plaines and Lake, the new village of Harlem (present day Forest Park) was ready to vote in the presidential election of 1860.

Of the 90 ballots cast in Harlem, every single vote was for Abraham Lincoln.

I remember working outside in 10 degrees below zero and wanted to quit, but I realized that other people do the same thing. I put on my overalls, extra jeans and leggings and all that and just finished my day.

My apprenticeship is paid and it started off at $16 an hour the first six months and increased to $18 an hour. After the first year is completed, we get a raise of $3, bumping the pay up to $21 an hour. The second year of the apprenticeship program I was making $25. The third year, I was at, like, $30-something. We get increases in our pay every two years. The benefit are great. Our insurance is the best.

I’ve heard [other trades people] say certain things, but I think I’ve proven myself. They’ll treat you like you don’t know anything in the beginning, but when I proved myself they backed off. I think many of the challenges had to do with being the new person on the job. Of course, me being a woman, I have to prove myself every day, but I really like what I’m doing. I can see what I build.

What’s the work like?

The most exciting job I had was working at Wrigley Field. That was cool. I was able to see underground and overhead piping. I installed the toilets and sinks. I was also able to watch the first six home games. At the time, I was the only female on the job.

I’m in a support group with about 30 women and it’s within the Chicago Women in Trades. We make sure we check up on each other and everything, because sometimes it’s hard. You want to quite.

What’s the work scheduled like?

The work is year-round. With construction, you only get the major holidays off. Most people work the whole year.

Projects can vary. They can last from a month to two or three years. It depends on the building and the contracting. The Wrigley project, for instance, has been going on for the last five years. I was there for two of them.

My apprenticeship program is five years. It will be four-and-a-half years for me in June, when I’ll be eligible to take the test. Once your apprenticeship is over, you become a journeyman and you can basically go out on your own (as opposed to the apprenticeship program finding a job for you). The top pay is $51 an hour right now, plus all the benefits and everything. After journeyman, you be a foreman, a superintendent — there are so many other positions in this local.

What advice would you give women who may want to go into the trades for themselves?

I’d tell them to come to this program seriously and make sure you have a purpose.

Don’t let whatever is going on in your life affect your work area. Give 100 percent.

Never give up. This is a great job, especially once you’re in it. Once you’re in, you’re in.

Chicago Women in Trades is the best program to sign up for, because they give you hands-on support withe everything.

They prepare your for the future.

Have you applied your skills at home yet?

I’ve been able to work on my grandmother’s house. I was able to reroute her sink, because it was clogged up. That was my test to see if I really wanted to be a plumber. I spent maybe a whole week working on her sink.

I had times when I wanted to give up, but once I finished the job, I was so satisfied that I could put what I learned to use. I’m even trying to get my little brothers into this, but they’re more into basketball.
