During a special meeting on Feb. 27, the District 209 school board voted on a series of massive changes that included the nonrenewal and reclassification of roughly four dozen administrative and educational support personnel positions.

The board also voted to bring food and transportation services in-house; to begin the process of outsourcing information technology (IT) services; and to start the process of possibly withdrawing from the Proviso Area for Exceptional Children (PAEC) Cooperative.

An urgent care clinic started by former employees of the shuttered West Lake Hospital in Melrose Park is now open for business.

West Lake Urgent Care, 1419 W. Lake St. in Melrose Park, has been open for about a week, said Shellye Pechulis, a former

Westlake emergency room nurse who now heads the clinic.

Board members of Westlake Urgent Care NFP, the nonprofit that operates the clinic, told Village Free Press in February 2020 that they were hoping to raise roughly $500,000 in order for the clinic to open later that year.

Pechulis said on Feb. 27 that the group has so far raised about three-quarters of their goal, but she said the campaign yielded some in-kind donations, such as equipment, as well.

She said the clinic, which will treat nonlife-threatening medical emergencies, had been conducting COVID-19 tests for the last

four months, “but we are now open as an urgent care clinic.”

The clinic’s temporary hours are Monday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; and Sundays, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We take all insurance,” Pechulis said, adding that uninsured patients can pay by cash. “Our cash rate is extremely low. We do it by income, so it’s basically a sliding scale.”

She said that the clinic currently has nine employees, all of whom are “emergency room-oriented.” The staff includes “ER physicians, paramedics, ER nurses—all certified in advanced cardiac life support, pediatric life support and CPR.” See URGENT CARE on page 6

from page 1 The proposals prompted significant pushback from parents, employees and even some board members — all of whom expressed shock and awe at the agenda items, arguing that such sweeping change was happening with barely any advance notice, little input from district stakeholders, not much planning and hardly any documentation.

Board members in support of the proposals, however, were just as shocked at the opposition to the changes. They said the realignments had been discussed at previous meetings and a board retreat. They also said the changes will be positive for the district and will benefit students.

The meeting happened at 9:30 a.m. on a Saturday. The agenda was posted online, but did not include any hyperlinks directing the public to accompanying documentation for each agenda item — a feature common to the board’s regular meetings but uncommon for committee and special meetings.

All of the changes except one were enacted by a 4-2 vote, with board President Rodney Alexander, and members Della Patterson, Theresa Kelly and Sam Valtierrez voting in favor of the changes.

Members Amanda Grant and Claudia Medina voted against the changes. Member Ned Wagner abstained from voting on the PAEC agenda item before leaving the meeting early due to another commitment.

Thirty-nine administrators terminated or reclassified With no supporting documentation made available to the public, the D209 board paved the way for the superintendent to make sweeping administrative changes by voting to terminate or to reclassify the positions of dozens of employees in the district.

In total, 39 D209 staff members at various levels of administration were affected, including the principals of PMSA and Proviso East, and the assistant principal at Proviso West.

William Breisch, the principal of the Proviso Math and Science Academy, and seven other administrative employees whose contracts are not expiring at the end of the school year or are tenured, were reclassified to teaching positions.

Along with Breisch, the following employees were reclassified as teachers: Fred Aguirre (assistant principal of student support at Proviso East), Joseph Kosina (assistant principal at Proviso West), Ernest Travis (a dean at Proviso West), Dylester Palm (a dean at Proviso East), Carla Williams (a lead counselor at Proviso West), Alexander Aschoff and Heather Wickey.

Another 31 employees, including Dr. Patrick Hardy, the principal of Proviso East, whose contracts are expiring at the end of the 202021 school year, are not being renewed.

In executive session, the board discussed new positions and a new administrative structure, but this was not provided to the public. Medina and Grant voted against approving new positions.

Wagner wasn’t present.

Board members Grant and Medina voted against the reclassifications and terminations. Wagner wasn’t present for this part of the meeting. Alexander, Kelly, Patterson and Valtierrez voted in favor.

Medina expressed concern that the people being reclassified were not made aware of what their new salaries would be, and that losing so many collective years of experiences and “institutional knowledge” would be detrimental to the district.

“I think that this is a mistake,” Medina said. “We don’t have any descriptions of any of the new classified positions for us to make this determination. There is just a page [in the board packet] with a list of the reorganization. There are no descriptions. For each one I was told I was I would receive the information describing each one of these positions, and yet I have nothing. It is a mistake for us to be voting on this at this moment.”

Patterson made a point of asking Henderson if he had provided board members with a “salary analysis,” and he said he had on Jan. 30, the date of the board retreat. Medina pointed out, however, that a salary analysis is not the same as position descriptions.

The restructuring was purportedly done based on audits performed earlier in the school year. Henderson first made reference to these audits during the Oct. 13 board meeting.

“The audit team will come in and take a look at technology, take a look at human resources, finance and above all, academics,” Henderson said during that meeting. “And we’re expecting that cost to be nominal, not even enough to bring to you, because I have done a lot of the work. But we need experts in the area of finance, academics, to help us sort all of that out. And then we’ll present those findings to you in December.”

During the Oct. 13 meeting, when Medina asked what “nominal” meant, in terms of the cost, Henderson responded with, “Less than $25,000 each,” meaning that he didn’t need board approval for the audits since the amount was less than that which would require board approval.

Those findings were never presented to the board, however. Not in December, and not in subsequent meetings. And they were never discussed publicly in a board meeting until Feb. 27, during which sweeping changes were made based on these reports that have not been published on the district’s website and were not made available to the press.

In an Oct. 29 response to a FOIA request for a copy of the contracts of the auditors, the district responded: “The District states that the current employees: Dr. Nicole Williams and Dr. James L. Henderson will complete most of the transition audit. Also Dr. Henderson is currently interviewing candidates to complete the team in the areas of Technology and Finance.”

Outsourcing the technology department; bringing transportation and food services in-house Some of the terminations made during the Feb. 27 meeting were of technology administrators in the district, including the technology director, Avant-Bey. Additionally, the board voted to approve the issuance of a request for proposal to outsource “technology management” after Medina’s motion to table that vote failed, along with votes on two other agenda items: bringing both food services and student transportation in district.

Grant said she had heard about food services and transportation in a “Chat and Chew” in January with the superintendent. And although the ideas had been brought up before, specifics, such as budgets and timelines, had never been provided, nor had the public been able to give feedback.

Grant added that she also did not see an audit that the superintendent said was conducted into the district’s IT department.

According to an employee who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, someone from outside of the district had conducted an IT audit late last year where an auditor asked IT employees a series of questions.

There was a report drafted, but the superintendent has not shared that report with IT personnel, according to the employee.

The employee said 18 people work in the IT department and anywhere from six to eight of them are members of Proviso Council, Local 571.

“This may very well be the first step toward the privatization of the tech department but the decision to do such is not what is being considered tomorrow,” said Thomas Smith, field service director for the Illinois Federation of Teachers, in an email statement sent Friday.

“If the Board decides to take such action to privatize they will need to follow the procedures defined in [the state school code].

The code specifies written notices, public hearings and required benefits for employee among other things before privatizing public services. That said, the Union is opposed to privatization of public services. It is the Union’s belief that it is better for public services to be provided by public agencies, like school boards, rather than private companies.”

Brion Grant, a union representative for Local 571 who works security at Proviso East, said many IT workers were afraid that they’ll lose their jobs and pleaded with the administration to listen to the workers and their concerns.

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. JB Pritzker signed a criminal justice omnibus bill backed by the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus on Feb. 22, abolishing cash bail, overhauling police certification and reforming use-offorce standards among numerous other provisions.

Pritzker signed the legislation, House Bill 3653, during an event at Chicago State University alongside members of his administration and lawmakers from the Black Caucus.

“This legislation marks a substantial step toward dismantling the systemic racism that plagues our communities, our state and our nation, and brings us closer to true safety, true fairness and true justice,” Pritzker said.

Transparency touted from page 2 “When IT is called into a meeting and when they come away from that meeting and feel like their job is being threatened, they’re hurt,” he said. “And a lot of us feel like that was the beginning of something we might not want to see coming, which is the outsourcing of jobs.”

“It seems like he’s getting rid of everybody,” the employee requesting anonymity said, referencing Henderson. “We are all afraid we’re going to be unemployed by July.”

“We need our time to do our due diligence,” Grant said at Saturday’s meeting. “I’m asking that we table these until we have a chance to do that.”

“It’s an indictment against every board member that says they don’t know what’s going on up here, because the rest of us do,” Alexander responded. “There may be some need for clarification … but we’re not voting up here about stuff we don’t know.

“For people that want to mischaracterize our commitment to this district, to these schools, so be it,” Alexander added. “I could really care less. I could really care less what you think.”

Alexander said improvements made in the district speak for themselves and for the work that the board does.

Grant said she thought the board needed to see the results of the aforementioned audits that Henderson had commissioned prior to making decisions based on information in those analyses.

While the legislation received grassroots support from activists, buoyed by the growing national concern over policing following the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor last year, the bill faced strong opposition from Republican lawmakers and law enforcement groups.

House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, of Western Springs, called the signing “an insult to our first responders.”

“We live in a civilized state where our elected officials’ greatest responsibility is the health and safety of Illinois citizens…

enforcement, Gov. Pritzker has turned his back on them with his signature on House Bill 3653,” Durkin said in a statement released Monday.

Opponents of the legislation have said it will result in a less safe Illinois and have criticized the process behind its development as lacking in transparency without proper input from Republican lawmakers and the public at large.

It wasn’t the issues themselves that gave Grant pause, she said; it was the lack of information presented to both board members and the public before the vote was made. In terms of bringing food and the bus service inhouse, “I’m all for it,” Grant said, adding that the district would have better control.

“But I am saying in order to make an informed decision as a board member, and in order to be transparent with the public, these items need to be information items a month at least before we vote on it,” Grant said.

She added that as someone who has attended every meeting, she “had no idea” that these items were coming up for vote on Saturday.

“I had no chance to do comparison with other school districts who have outsourced it,” Grant said. “What does that look like? How much does that cost?”

Grant also said that the public, which had 48 hours or less to see the agenda, were looking at these items for the first time in many cases.

“That can’t be healthy to business as a board,” Grant said.

Alexander said the process shouldn’t get in the way of progress and “just because we didn’t like the way Doc [Henderson] did it,” it doesn’t mean that the board shouldn’t approve items brought forth by the superintendent.

“This board still has the final decision,” Alexander said, stating that when Henderson brings a contract to the board for approval, if they don’t like it, they can still vote it down.

“We have the final say on whatever Henderson brings up here,” he said.

But only Medina and Grant voted to table the three items. And only Grant and Medina voted against each of the three items, all of which passed.

District weighs withdrawing some students from PAEC Collaborative During the Feb. 27 meeting, the D209 board also voted 4-2 on a motion to “begin the process of withdrawing” from the Proviso Area for Exceptional Children (PAEC) Collaborative.

Alexander, Kelly, Patterson and Valtierrez voted in favor of the motion while Grant and Medina voted against it. Wagner abstained.

The vote happened after a tense exchange between some members over the wording of the motion and whether the vote was necessary since the superintendent already has the authority to explore the effectiveness of PAEC. Medina wanted to know if the district had conducted a cost analysis before voting on the motion to withdraw. Alexander said that the word “withdraw” should not have been in the motion, but would not grant Medina’s request to remove the word from the motion.

“What if we change the language?” Medina said.

What if you just accept the explanation,” Alexander responded. “Are we going to table this for two more weeks because of a word? [….] The wording is confusing, but we’ve clarified that.”

Henderson said that the administration “is just simply asking the board to allow us the opportunity to begin the process of planning for withdrawing from PAEC and prepare a resolution to that [effect], but it’s a long, drawn-out process. [If we were to do this], we would have to inform PAEC and the state at

policies in sentencing, incarceration and policing.

Members of the Black Caucus have countered claims against the bill’s transparency by pointing to nine subject matter hearings held by the caucus in state Senate committees between September and November. For nearly 30 hours, lawmakers from both parties, law enforcement, judges, state’s attorneys, legal experts, representatives of the court, the governor’s office and the attorney general’s office hashed out many of the issues that became provisions in the bill.

The office of the governor and Attorney General Kwame Raoul held working meetings over several months starting in July with many of the same groups.

The bill was introduced early in a fiveday lame duck session last month, and the final version of the bill was introduced after midnight on the final day of the lame-duck session, when it received just enough votes to pass both chambers with less-than-anhour of floor-debate.

The board’s attorney said that investigating the feasibility of withdrawing from PAEC “doesn’t require an action item,” but board members in support of the motion said that Henderson was erring on the side of transparency by bringing the matter before the board.

“This is transparency that he’s asking the board beforehand and when we’re talking about withdrawing students from PAEC, I believe we have 200 students [who attend PAEC and] he’s talking about 84 students, not the entire student population, at PAEC. This is a specific group of students he’s speaking of.”

Grant said that she interpreted the action item before the board as saying that the superintendent had already conducted a degree of analysis into the possibility of withdrawing some students from PAEC, including examining the impact on families, personnel and the budget.

“When I read the first paragraph, it seems to me that some of this has already been done, but not yet presented,” she said. “So, I think we’re putting the cart before the horse.”

Many of the community members who spoke during public comment on Feb. 27 echoed Grant’s and Medina’s outrage.

“The suggestion of a new superintendent from out of state just looking at the numbers and thinking he can go ahead and say, ‘Let’s exit PAEC’ without having all the facts or the history is ludicrous,” said Katherine Sorensen, of Maywood. “Parents have to have a voice in this … You need to bring parents and students in, because they’re the ones impacted.”

Four products made in the Proviso Township area were in the running to become “The Coolest Thing Made In Illinois” last month. The distinction goes to the winner of the second annual “Makers Madness” contest hosted by the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association (IMA) and presented by Comcast Business.

The competition “shines a light on Illinois’ diverse manufacturing sector, which has played a critical role in the state and nation’s response to the coronavirus pandemic,” according to a joint statement released by the IMA and Comcast Business in February.

A total of 311 products produced in Illinois were nominated, including four products produced in Proviso Township.

Nerds Gummy Clusters Candy and Ferrero Rocher are both manufactured in Bellwood. Nerds are made by Ferrara Candy Company while Ferrero Rocher is made by Ferrero, which acquired Ferrara Candy Company in 2017. The goods are both

Voting for the initial round of “Makers Madness” took place from Feb. 17 through Feb. 28. Voters were allowed to cast votes for up to five individual product entries per day, with no more than one vote per product, per day, contest officials said.

“Voting throughout the contest will take place at www.makersmadnessil.com, where voters can now choose which products should advance to the Top 16,” officials said.

The first round of voting to determine the top eight products takes place from March 2 through March 7. The second round of voting to determine the top four products will take place from March 9 through March 14. The final round of voting will take place from March 16 through March 21. The Coolest Thing Made In Illinois will be announced on March 24, contest officials said.

As of Feb. 28, it was not clear if any of the four products in Proviso Township made the second round. Last year, Caterpillar’s 797F Large Mining Truck was crowned “The Coolest Thing Made in Illinois” after nearly 300,000 votes, officials explained.

Study: Proviso suburbs hotbeds of opioid overdose deaths Broadview, Maywood among Cook County suburbs with highest rates of opioid exposure-overdose deaths since 2016

A new report released in February by the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) shows that suburbs in Proviso Township have among the highest opioid-related death rates in suburban Cook County.

The report — done by Alfreda HollowayBeth and Nhan Nguyen of the public health department’s Epidemiology Unit, and Lee Friedman, with the University of Illinois Chicago’s School of Public Health — gathered data from the Illinois Poison Center, area hospitals, and the Cook County Medical Examiner. The data is from 2016 to 2020.

From January 2016 to June 2020, the report found, 1,576 people in the municipalities that fall under the Cook County public health department’s jurisdiction died from opioid overdoses, according to data from the Cook County Medical Examiner. Among those overdose deaths, roughly 83 percent involved heroin and/or fentanyl.

During those four years, the suburban Cook County zip codes with the highest opioid mortality rate were 60482 (Worth), (60155) Broadview, (60153) Maywood and (60130) Forest Park.

In Broadview, there were 14 opioid exposure-overdose deaths during that time span, or 39.2 per 100,000 residents. In Maywood, there were 41 exposure-overdose deaths during that time span, or 37.8 per 100,000 residents. Worth and Forest Park each had 21 deaths (42.2 per 100,000 residents) and 24 deaths 37.6 per 100,000 residents), respectively, during that time span.

Zip codes covering Melrose Park, Stone Park, Bellwood, Berkeley and Hillside were also among the top zip codes in suburban Cook County with the highest mortality rates.

The report’s other key findings included the “sharp increase in opioid overdose mortality rates” among middle-aged Black men, ages 35 to 64, in suburban Cook County.

“This increase mirrors national trends also showing a marked rise beginning in 2016,” the report explained. “Hospital and mortality rates were more than two times lower among Hispanic/Latinx residents compared to Black/African-American and white non-Hispanic residents” in suburban Cook County.

“In addition to the incalculable cost of human lives and the impacts to their families, friends, and communities, there is a high economic burden resulting from opioid use disorders and conditions induced by opioid use,” the report explained.

“From 2016 to 2019, the cumulative hospital charges to treat suburban Cook County residents for any opioid related issues (including medical conditions induced by opioid use, withdrawal and treatment) was almost $800 million,” the report added. “Of which, treatment of acute opioid intoxication-overdose cases alone exceeded $500 million in hospital charges.”

In a statement released Feb. 18, Holloway-Beth said that fentanyl and heroin “continue to be an incredibly lethal combination in opioid use and no group is immune to these factors in overdose deaths.”

Dr. Kiran Joshi, the senior medical officer and co-lead for CCDPH, said that the report “reveals not only surprising trends, but potential blind spots in our systems that can be improved to save lives.”

Joshi added that the department “will use this analysis to inform our activities and customize intervention programs to target the needs of different groups with opioid use disorders. By sharing this data with community leaders and stakeholders, we can leverage our collective expertise and resources to address this crisis.”

Two educators who teach in elementary schools in Proviso Township have been named finalists for the coveted 2021 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Anh Pham, 35, teaches at Joseph Academy, 1100 N. 22nd Ave. in Melrose Park, while Kali Goldberg, 29, teaches at Garfield Elementary School, 1514 S. 9th Ave. in Maywood.

Pham and Goldber were among 32 pre-K through 3rd grade finalists, just 4.5 percent of 708 nominations received from 67 counties in Illinois, Golden Apple officials announced on Feb. 23. “”The vital role of teachers in the lives of students, their families, and their communities has been elevated even more over the past year,” said Alan Mather, the president of Golden Apple, in a statement.

“The resilience teachers have demonstrated while navigating teaching during the global pandemic and through a time of racial awakening, while providing the high-quality education and socialemotional support students need, has been tremendously impactful,” he said. “We are honored to recognize the extraordinary work of these finalists.”

Alicia Winckler, Golden Apple’s CEO, stated that the annual distinctions “elevate the critical roles that teachers have in our society,” adding that while “continue to

During a phone interview on Feb. 24, Goldberg, who teaches Pre-K and English as a Second Language at Garfield, said she’s passionate about the impact of early childhood education on young learners.

“I really feel at home in District 89, because a couple of years ago, the district expanded our Preschool for All program to get more kids in the community enrolled in high quality, free early childhood classes,” she said. “I’m a huge proponent of developmentally appropriate classes and what it means to teach the youngest learners.”

Golden Apple officials said that they’ll surprise the 2021 award recipients in the spring.

“Northwestern University generously provides a spring sabbatical to award recipients at no cost,” they explained. “Each recipient receives a $5,000 cash award. Award recipients become Fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, a community of educators who play an important role in preparing the next generation of teachers in the Golden Apple Scholars and Accelerators programs – which are dedicated to addressing the teacher shortage in Illinois.”

NEWS briefs Brookfield Zoo reopened [By Bob Uphues] The area may still be in the depths of a deep freeze, but Brookfield Zoo is coming out of its hibernation after a two-month shutdown to start 2021.

According to the Chicago Zoological Society’s website, Brookfield Zoo began welcoming visitors into its gates on March 1. Hours of operation had not been updated prior to press time.

As was the case since the zoo reopened to the public last July, the park will be operating under COVID-19 restrictions. To ensure limited capacity allowing for social distancing, all visitors must reserve a time to visit the zoo. Those reservations must be made online in 20-minute intervals and both tickets and parking must be purchased in advance at czs.org/onlineticketing.

No tickets will be sold onsite and, like last summer, the zoo is operating in a cashless environment. You’ll need a credit or debit card to purchase food, drinks and gifts inside the zoo.

Restaurants and retail shops will also be closed, but food, beverages and souvenirs can be purchased from carts in various spots on the park grounds. Visitors are asked to wear face coverings when entering the zoo and whenever it’s not possible to maintain six feet of space between your party and other visitors, including lines at food and gift carts.

All of Brookfield Zoo’s indoor exhibit areas will continue to be closed to the public and other attractions, like the dolphin shows, carousel, the Hamill Family Play Zoo, the butterfly exhibit, playgrounds and the Motor Safari also will not be in operation.

Pritzker signs criminal justice reform bill [Capitol News Illinois] SPRINGFIELD — Gov. JB Pritzker signed a criminal justice omnibus bill backed by the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus on Feb. 22, abolishing cash bail, overhauling police certification and reforming use-offorce standards among numerous other provisions.

Pritzker signed the legislation, House Bill 3653, referred to as the “Safe-T Act”, during an event at Chicago State University alongside members of his administration and lawmakers from the Black Caucus.

“This legislation marks a substantial step toward dismantling the systemic racism that plagues our communities, our state and our nation, and brings us closer to true safety, true fairness and true justice,” Pritzker said.

While the legislation enjoyed grassroots support from activists, buoyed by the growing national concern over policing following the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor last year, the bill faced strong opposition from Republican

Proviso East football stadium demolition underway Demolition of the Proviso East High School football stadium has started in order to make way for the construction of a larger stadium in its place. On Sunday afternoon, passersby could see that a portion of the home bleachers and press box were partially demolished.

School officials and community members had gathered near the stadium on the morning of Feb. 25 for what they thought would be a major demolition scene, but that never happened.

Last year, Michael Dolter, with the architectural firm Perkins and Will, said that the football stadium will be demolished and reconstructed further east in order to make room for 118 parking spaces on campus and to allow for an improved running track.

Artificial turf will be installed on the football field and a large Pirate logo painted in the middle of the field. In addition, a separate building for concessions will be built near the stadium.

In December, the Proviso Township High School District 209 school board unanimously approved a $106,400 bid from Chicago-based National Wrecking to demolish the stadium.

During a regular meeting on Feb. 16, the Maywood Board of Trustees voted unanimously in favor of an ordinance authorizing and approving an executive order that requires people to wear face coverings in public or face a fine of at least $100 whenever they violate the mandate.

Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins introduced the proposal at a regular meeting on Feb. 2, roughly a week after Village Free Press reported on a COVID-19 outbreak inside of the Maywood Police Department, which is located at 125 S. 5th Ave., directly above the mayor’s office.

The executive order explains that, once the measure becomes a local ordinance, those in violation of the order may be subject to a fine “of not less than $100 and not more than $750.”

The face covering requirement won’t apply to people while they’re inside of their homes, while riding in a personal vehicle, and while engaging in an outdoor activity, such as jogging or walking.

The exemption also applies to individuals under the age of 2 years old, anyone “unable to medically tolerate the wearing of a mask,” and when wearing a face covering “poses a greater health, safety or security risk to the person or to the public.”

NEWS briefs Much of the ordinance is consistent with regulations that have already been applied at the county, state and federal levels. Gov. J.B. Pritzker, for instance, issued a COVID19-related disaster proclamation on March 9.

Attorney Michael Jurusik said on Feb. 16 that the executive order will “automatically terminate” once Gov. Pritzker’s disaster proclamation ends.

Third Shark’s Fish & Chicken to open in Maywood A third Shark’s Fish & Chicken location is opening in Maywood. Construction is happening on a former payday loan location at the corner of 1st Avenue and Madison Street.

Two signs outside of the facility announce that the location is in the process of being retrofitted in order to accommodate what would be Maywood’s third Shark’s Fish & Chicken.

There are two Shark’s locations in Maywood: one at 1001 Roosevelt Rd. and another at 715 S. 5th Ave. There’s also a Shark’s at 2500 St. Charles Rd. in Bellwood.

A Shark Fish & Chicken located at 715 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood is independently owned, the restaurant’s owner said. The owner, who declined to give his name, said he severed ties with the parent company over a dispute about franchising fees. He

said he’s planning to close his restaurant temporarily for roof repairs.

Angela Smith, Maywood’s business coordinator, said the Shark’s at 1st and Madison is owned and operated by the same person who owns and operates the Shark’s in Bellwood.

She added that the Shark’s that is currently under development at 1st and Madison will be a mixed-use facility, with the restaurant on the first floor and two residential apartment units above it.

Currently, workers are adding a second story to the former cash loans business, she said.

Smith said that the developers are seeking to open sometime in the summer.

Attempts to contact Shark’s executives were unsuccessful.

Broadview Police looking for owners of missing pups Three pups were found roaming together near 17th Avenue and Roosevelt Road on Feb. 28.

When Village Free Press covered Bithella Bulger in the event of her 104th birthday last year, her granddaughter, Angela Phillips, said one of the keys to her grandmother’s longevity was the centenarian’s diet.

“Well, she’s always been a healthy eater,” Phillips said at the time. “She believes in taking vitamins. Growing up, she’d give us cod liver oil and goose grease. She never drank. Didn’t even have high blood pressure until she got much, much older in life.

Her dementia didn’t even kick in until she was around 99. So she’s always been fairly healthy. She does like vanilla ice cream and a snicker’s bar on occasion.”

Bulger’s healthy diet seems to have kept her roughly a year into a global pandemic.

On Feb. 28, community members gathered on the 800 block of South 21st Avenue in Maywood for a car caravan to celebrate Bulger’s 105th birthday. Bulger’s birthday was Feb. 25.

Although dementia has affected some

of her mental faculties, the disease hasn’t taken away her spunk and personality.

Granny, as she is affectionately known, still enjoys her Louisiana hot sauce moves to the beat of her own rhythm when walking, according to one of her caretakers.

Her family looks to her for inspiration.

She was an entrepreneur and world traveler.

At around 50 years old, she became a registered nurse after careers as a licensed cosmetologist and salon owner.

“I was thinking about changing careers at 45 years old and I thought if she can do it, so can I,” said Phillips. “I went from marketing research to being a special education teacher.”

Phillips said Bulger “had great foresight.

When I was born she purchased shares of Peoples Energy and when I turned 17, she gifted that to me and at the time it was worth $10,000.”

“She set the path for us”, her greatgrandson, Randell Phillips, added.

Recently the Maywood Board of Trustees voted to name the basketball courts at Conner-Heise Memorial Park the Glenn “Doc” Rivers Family Basketball Courts.

In honor of Black History Month, I would be remiss to neglect to honor all the other Black athletes from Maywood.

Maywood is three miles in radius and has produced over 20 professional athletes in basketball, football, baseball, as well as track and field. This is no small feat. Maywood has many parks that could be dedicated to these athletes.

A few of these fine athletes are: Jim Brewer, Michael Finley, Steven Hunter, Shannon and Sterling Brown — all from basketball; then we have Ray Buchanan and Jerome Salley from football.

Maywood also produced an Olympic medalist from track and field, Greg Foster, as well as Mike Woodard, a Major League Baseball player. These are just a few of the most well-known athletes from Maywood.

Maywood is a small town in the Chicagoland area, but produces some of the finest athletes in all sports. It is past time that we showcase them.

Since we’ve just celebrated Black History month let’s use this time to do just that!
