‘What truth sounds like’ Professor Michael Eric Dyson visited Dominican University in River Forest on Feb. 11 By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

Michael Eric Dyson, the popular Georgetown professor and bestselling author, was at Dominican University in River Forest on Feb. 11 — his first time speaking at the school since he delivered the university’s MLK lecture 20 years ago. During a brief chat with Village Free Press moments before he took the stage, Dyson recalled that he was once the recipient of an award given out by the late Bill Hampton during his annual Fred Hampton Memorial Scholarship Fund ceremony, which was an annual event in Maywood before Bill Hampton died in 2018. On Tuesday, Dyson delivered a spirited lecture/sermon/meditation on the African American experience in this country, improvising on themes in his 2018 book What Truth Sounds Like: RFK, James Baldwin, and Our Unfinished Conversation About Race in America. With his trademark wit, Dyson also riffed on some hot topics in news and popular culture — from President Donald Trump’s impeachment to the row between rapper Snoop Dogg and journalist See MICHAEL ERIC DYSON on page 2

apparent. During a regular meeting on Feb. 11, the District 209 Board of Education terminated an associate football coach at Proviso East and accepted the retirement of the high school’s athletic director/assistant principal. And in an interview on Feb. 14, D209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez said that the school has also implemented more stringent

residency checks across the district, as a result of the football controversy. Rodriguez confirmed that the termination of Michael Willis, the associate football coach and a lunchroom monitor in the district, was related to the playoff disqualification; however, the See EAST FOOTBALL on page 10
