A group of former employees of the shuttered Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park are poised to open an around-theclock urgent care clinic mere steps from the hospital’s darkened emergency room.

The West Lake Urgent Care facility will be located inside of a building at 1419 W. Lake St. in Melrose Park, which once housed physicians’ offices. The facility will be operated by a nonprofit group called Westlake Urgent Care NFP, which includes See WEST LAKE URGENT CARE on page 3

Scholarship brunch brings out community leaders On Jan. 25, at the Diplomat West Banquet Hall in Elmhurst, the King Daughters Ministry held its 17th annual If I Could Help Somebody Scholarship Brunch. Rev. Annette Barker, the ministry’s founder and pastor of Christian Unity Baptist Church, 2140 Washington Blvd. in Bellwood, said that 80 percent of the proceeds from the brunch go to the scholarship and the other 20 percent go to the ministry’s newly formed Girl Succeed Academy.

“This is such a great cause and such a wonderful organization,” said District 89 Supt. David Negron, who was the afternoon’s keynote speaker.

The event was also attended by a range of community leaders, including Bellwood Mayor Andre Harvey, Bellwood Village Clerk Janelle Moreland, Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson, Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins, Proviso West Principal Nia Abdullah, The Answer Inc. Founder Debra Vines and former judge Gay Chase — all of whom sat on a panel and/or were recipients of awards.

The King Daughters Ministry gave Tonita LaShore, Bellwood’s HR director, the 2020 Community Spirit of Excellence Award.

Barker said that three students received a scholarship that ranged from $500 to $2,500.

Giovanni Otero, a 14-year-old who attends Stevenson Middle School in Oak Park said he heard about the scholarship through

a teacher.

Mylah Little, 14, also attends Stevenson. She said she’ll put her scholarship money to use in high school.

“The scholarship was originated through the legacy of my mom Katherine Dugan, who always loved to reach out to help people,” Barker said. “She actually started this in the basement of our home.”

Barker said that although her mother never graduated college, she wanted to make sure everyone around her had access to higher education.

“Down through the years, her motto was always, ‘If I can just help somebody,’ so we took that model and wanted to help someone continue their education.”

Barker estimated that the organization has given out more than $40,000 in scholarships over the years.

“We’ve had recipients who have went on to Harvard, Morehouse, Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois, Illinois State and other colleges,” she said. “We’ve also had two NBA players — Michael Finley and Cory Magette — who have come through this program. So, it’s been our strength and we are just happy to keep my mom’s legacy going.”

Faith Bailey showcases black girl magic on canvas Local artist Faith Bailey, 32, is a hair stylist by profession, but her creativity isn’t restricted to the salon. She’s also a self-taught artist, whose work was the focus of a one-woman exhibition at the now-closed Corner Spot Cafe, 1825 Roosevelt Rd. in Broadview, last month.

“I mostly draw on emotions,” Bailey said, referencing the inspiration for her work, most of which is acrylic on canvas. Women of color — painted in various shades of brown and suspended in various moments of ‘Black Girl Magic — are often the subjects in Bailey’s pieces.

“I try to stick with things that will pop out and that people can relate to,” the artist said, adding that it takes her roughly a day to create each piece. The timing depends on the size, she said.

During the Dec. 2 event in Broadview, Bailey said that she only learned to paint within the last two years. The roughly two dozen pieces on display at Corner Spot took her roughly a month to complete, she said, adding that she was selling the

work through a closed bidding process. Each piece started off at $100 and went up from there.

“I took a sketch class at the Art Institute, but other than that everything has been selftaught,” Bailey said.

She explained that she was drawn to art based on her experiences living in Utah (her husband Richard is in the Air Force). The family moved back to the Proviso Township area last year.

Bailey said in December that they’ll be moving to Italy early this year.

“We moved to Utah in 2013 and realized there were no black artists out there,” Bailey said.

“But there were a lot of black children being adopted with nothing to look up to, so I created a black ballerina for a school and got invited to an art show.”

WEST LAKE URGENT CARE Coming soon from page 1 former Westlake Hospital emergency room doctors and nurses.

Dr. Nabil Saleh, a pediatrician who sits on the board of the nonprofit and who used to practice at Westlake, said that the roughly 5,000-square-foot facility could open by the end of February. The building is currently undergoing renovations that will allow staff at the urgent care facility to treat a range of non-life-threatening illnesses — from a sore throat to ear infections.

Westlake Hospital, the roughly centuryold safety net hospital at 1225 W. Lake St. in Melrose Park, closed last summer — less than a year after the hospital was purchased

by Pipeline Health, a for-profit company that bought the hospital, along with two others in the Chicago area, from Tenet Healthcare in January 2019.

In September 2019, the former employees of Westlake filed a federal class action lawsuit against Pipeline Health, claiming that Pipeline violated the law by not providing at least 60 days’ advance notice of termination to the hospital’s roughly 550 employees and that it created a shell company “for the sole purpose of acquiring — and then immediately closing — Westlake Hospital” as part of a strategy developed to benefit Pipeline’s investors.

Attorney Ari Scharg, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the workers, said last September the Pipeline Health “underestimated the strength and resiliency of the Westlake Hospital caregivers and staff.

“Just as they fought tooth and nail for their patients over the last six months, this lawsuit shows that they will continue to aggressively fight for their own rights and for rights of other hospital workers in Illinois who we think are similarly at risk by the for-profit hospital industry,” he said.

“Pipeline decided to close the hospital before they even closed the deal,” said Saleh during an interview in January inside of his offices at the Professional Office Building, which sits on Westlake’s campus, adjacent the closed emergency room, and is still open. The building houses the offices of many former Westlake physicians, but Saleh explained that he’s not sure if Pipeline owns it. He said that Tenet may still own the building’s mortgage.

“My offices are still here, but many of my patients don’t know that I’m still here or that some physicians have moved their offices,” Saleh said. “Those patients have found it incredibly difficult to get care, particularly emergency care at the nearest local hospitals like Gottlieb, Loyola and Elmhurst hospitals.”

Saleh, who also practices at Gottlieb, said that Westlake’s closing has had ripple effects for many residents in the area who need medical care. He said he’s had patients who have complained to him about waiting

Many lowincome residents, who comprised much of Westlake’s patient population, are unable and/or reluctant to travel to other hospitals in the area.

“It’s very difficult for people who are mainly blue-collar, live mostly check-tocheck and do not own two cars to go far — particularly with the weather we have in Chicago,” Saleh said. “There’s almost a psychological barrier, as well. People don’t cross the Eisenhower [to get to Loyola] and they don’t cross North Avenue [to get to Gottlieb].

“And in order for them to go to North Avenue — it’s a mile and a half. Imagine a mother walking a mile and a half with three or four kids and a stroller in the middle of the winter. It’s impossible. Or imagine having to call an ambulance? It’s very expensive and it’s not personalized, because patients don’t know where the ambulance will take them.”

Saleh, who said he started practicing at Westlake in 1978, explained that he’s also noticed challenges within his own office that have materialized since Westlake closed last year.

“It used to take less than one hour to get a result on a test done at Westlake,” he said.

“It’s 30 seconds between my office and the hospital. They do the test and call me with the results in one hour. Now, the patient has to take my order, go to another hospital to get a test done and the test would probably not be available for a day or two, or the x-ray report will not be available for a day or two. That delays the diagnosis and starting treatment, which could have an impact on the patient’s condition.”

Saleh said that the new urgent care facility in Melrose Park will help ease the burden on nearby emergency rooms, particularly since

many patients go to emergency rooms for non-life-threatening conditions that can be treated at urgent care clinics.

The staff at the clinic, he said, will be emergency room physicians and nurses who former Westlake patients are used to seeing and who know the community.

“The advantage for the population here and for us as workers is that whenever these patients walk in they will see familiar faces, they will see people who have treated them in the past and who know their history,” Saleh said. “Many of us go to the same churches, the same stores, the same places like our patients.”

Saleh has gotten support from Melrose Park Mayor Ron Serpico and other Melrose Park village officials, state Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch (7th), state Rep. Kathleen Willis (77th) and a range of Proviso Township mayors.

Sales said that money for the clinic has so far come from private funds obtained through a fundraising event the nonprofit hosted in December and from the pockets of the former Westlake employees who are associated with the nonprofit. The nonprofit also created a GoFundMe campaign in October that has a goal of $15,000. As of Feb. 2, the campaign had raised roughly $900.

Saleh said that the group hopes to raise at least $500,000 in private funding by April, which should be enough to cover roughly two to three months’ worth of operating expenses.

Shellye Pechulis — a former Westlake Hospital emergency room nurse who was once a chief trauma specialist for Cook County Hospital and who is also a member of the West Lake Urgent Care board — said that the facility will be a “dream come true” for area residents and the board.

“We have worked diligently to bring

healthcare to the community,” she said in a recent phone interview, before explaining the larger lesson that people should take from Westlake’s closing.

“Before Nixon deregulated the system, hospitals were all not-for-profit in this country,” Pechulis said. “It’s silently snowballed over the years to the point where we are at now, which is big business walks in, rapes the hospital financially and then dumps it.

“There needs to be more federal regulation of medical facilities — it has to come back,” she said. “Medicare for All will be a portion of what helps, because it might drive big business out. But it’s not going to drive them totally out.”

“Healthcare has been monetized in a way that actually caused the breakdown of the relationship between physicians and patients,” Saleh said, before criticizing economic credentialing — or the process of granting qualifications to healthcare providers based exclusively on economic criteria “unrelated to quality of care or professional competence,” according to the American Medical Association.

“Doctors have quotas to see a certain number of patients per hour or per day,” he said. “Doctors and nurses spend more time doing paperwork and computer work than providing bedside treatment.”

With the domination of for-profit medical providers, “patients have become commodities,” said Pechulis.

Handicap accessible affordable apartments open in Maywood Four buildings along 5th Avenue move-in ready, 12 more units to come

Four new buildings located along Fifth Avenue in Maywood and that are designed to house people with disabilities are ready for tenants to move in, according to officials with IFF, the nonprofit that developed the housing, and the Cook County Land Bank Authority, which sold the vacant parcels to IFF. Officials with both entities said that they’re planning on developing 20 more apartment units in Maywood in the future.

The handicap accessible housing is part of IFF’s First Home initiative, which is a plan to develop affordable scattered-site housing for people with disabilities throughout Cook County. In addition to Maywood, IFF has built 12 more buildings within the First Home initiative in Bellwood, Forest Park and Berwyn.

The four new buildings in Maywood, which are located three blocks of each other on Fifth Avenue, house a total of 12 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Tenants for the properties were identified by thirdparty agencies that work with people with disabilities. Those agencies referred IFF to prospective tenants, who were then directed

to apply to be on a waiting list, which is currently closed.

IFF and Land Bank officials said that each building includes two 750-square-foot apartment units on the first floor and one 1,000-square-foot unit on the second floor, which is accessible through a staircase.

All of the first-floor units are wheelchair accessible. The apartments also feature “roll-in showers, roll-up workspaces, and casement windows, accessible workspaces, grab bars and audio-visual alarms, sideby-side washer and dryer,” and off-street parking, officials said in a statement.

Rents are between $900 and $1,000, but tenants, who must be prequalified by the Housing Authority of Cook County, only have to pay 30 percent of their income in rent, officials said. Construction of the apartments was financed through a combination of tax credits, loans and grants.

IFF built the apartment buildings on four vacant lots in Maywood that it purchased from the Cook County Land Bank Authority in 2018 for $7,500 each. The Land Bank maintained the vacant lots and helped IFF clear the titles and delinquent taxes on them before the lots were sold and construction started.

“IFF is particularly proud to make available housing that’s accessible, affordable and community-integrated for people with disabilities,” said Dena Bell, the lead developer for IFF. “Working with the Land Bank simplified our site acquisition work and made our process more efficient.”

Robe Rose, the executive director of the Cook County Land Bank Authority, also lauded the partnership.

“Partnering with IFF to bring housing to this village that’s not only affordable but accessible has been a boon for us,” he said.

“Freeing up land and empowering local developers and communities to determine how to best redevelop it is exactly the sort of partnership we want to have.”

“Bringing vacant lots back to life is something this community really supports,” Bell said. “What’s more, this project provides a much improved quality of life for the individuals who will live here.”

Earlier this month, IFF and the Land Bank announced that they’ll develop 20 more apartment units in Maywood, but they haven’t yet identified where those lots will be and when they’ll be completed. The entities also haven’t revealed whether or not they’ll reopen the waiting list for more

But Rieves’ most enduring characteristic of all, they said, was that he exemplified the best of a tightly knit community, where neighbors were more like extended relatives and the local high school was, and continues to be, a source of deep, abiding pride.

Rieves was born on Aug. 12, 1968 and grew up in Maywood, where he attended Lexington Elementary and Proviso East High School.

His parents, Fred and Hattie Rieves, were community stalwarts, mourners recalled.

“Mama Rieves, you were one of our mamas,” Sen. Kimberly Lightford, who grew up in Maywood near the family, told Hattie, who sat grieving in the front of the sanctuary, mere feet from her son’s blue casket. “We cut the corner and we straightened up when you and Mr. Rieves were on that corner, because it was a certain way you just did not behave.”

Odell Clark, Greg Rieves’ longtime friend, recalled the Rieves home as a safe, reliable hangout.

“On the porch, we’d watch TV and crack jokes until the wee hours of the morning,” Clark recalled. “Our parents knew we were

in a good place and they knew we were safe and weren’t on the streets or doing anything stupid, so they were OK with us being there.”

In high school, Rieves flourished in multiple sports, including basketball and baseball.

After graduating from Proviso East in 1986, he attended Indiana State University on a baseball scholarship. In college, Rieves joined his beloved Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He took his pride for his high school, fraternity and hometown with him to Springfield when he was accepted into the Illinois State Police training academy.

“That was one of Greg’s proudest moments, when he got the letter from the capitol that said he was accepted,” said Greg Anderson, another longtime friend of Rieves’. “He said, ‘Anderson, they want me!’ Greg was the type of gentleman who always got excited about life and about everything.”

Lightford said that she entered graduate school as Rieves entered the academy.

“We spent a lot of time in Springfield in 1994, 1995, 1996,” she recalled. “We felt so much pride being from Maywood.”

Colonel David Byrd, the assistant deputy director lieutenant with the Illinois State Police, was Rieves’ field training officer. Byrd jocundly recalled that he took to the charismatic rookie the first day the two met on the West Side of Chicago. Before the end of that very first shift, Rieves had already given Byrd his nickname.

“Halfway through the night, I told him to go pick up something that we needed and he said, ‘Alright DB.’” Sgt. Brian Walker recalled Rieves’ as a fun, but protective presence, who was as quick to look out for his fellow troopers as he was to laugh. Walker said that Rieves once tailed the squad car he and Byrd were riding in for several stops just to ensure they were safe. “‘Man you and DB? I got y’all back,’” Walker recalled Rieves saying. “‘I’m going to make sure y’all are alright.’ I knew that I had me a protector and a friend.”

During Saturday’s service, all of those separate strands of Rieves’ impactful life were entwined in a fabric of remembrance.

Rieves’ classmates from the Proviso East Classes of 1985 and 1986 filled several pews

and presented Rieves’ son, Greg Rieves Jr., with his father’s high school baseball jersey. Moments before Saturday’s services, dozens of Phi Beta Sigma members paid their respects. Lightford, the Illinois Senate Majority Leader, submitted two resolutions.

State troopers and other employees with the Illinois State Police, where Rieves served for 22 years until retiring last year at 50, filled one section of the church and coordinated with local law enforcement to block off a few blocks of Madison Street during the funeral.

Rieves’ son, Greg Rieves’ Jr., said that he felt the support of those various communities.

“I have no words,” Rieves Jr. said. “I don’t know off the top of my head the proper thing to say, I just know I loved him.”

“This is what community looks like and don’t let nobody tell you what we come from,” Lightford said.

“Greg was an example of who we are, where we come from and why we’re all here today,” she said. “A lot of good stuff came out of the village of Maywood. This is what community looks like. Don’t let anybody tell you what we come from. We’re from good stock.”

“Greg was a Pirate,” said Jonette Greenhow, who also grew up, and went to high school, with Rieves. “I always say Maywood is one degree of separation. When one of us falls, there’s always a whole lot of people, far and wide, to come pick us up.”

Ethics, anti-corruption center of Gov. Pritzker’s state address Governor also touts 2019 accomplishments

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. JB Pritzker struck a tone of optimism and accomplishment in his annual State of the State Address on Jan. 29, declaring “the old patronage system needs to die” as he outlined his policy goals for 2020.

“Those who would shout doom and gloom might be loud – using social media bots and paid hacks to advance their false notions – but they are not many,” Pritzker said in his speech to members of the House and Senate on the floor of the House. “You see, we’re wresting the public conversation in Illinois back from people concerned with one thing and one thing only — predicting total disaster, spending hundreds of millions of dollars promoting it, and then doing everything in their power to make it happen.”

The governor laid out broad policy goals in the speech, emphasizing a need for ethics reform in the wake of an ongoing federal investigation which resulted in a guilty plea on bribery and tax fraud charges from former Democratic state Sen. Martin Sandoval on Tuesday.

“And now we have to work together to confront a scourge that has been plaguing our political system for far too long. We

must root out the purveyors of greed and corruption — in both parties — whose presence infects the bloodstream of government,” he said.

Pritzker spoke of revolving-door prohibitions and lobbying bans for sitting lawmakers. He also emphasized pension reform and reforming the criminal justice system by phasing out cash bail among other legislative action.

He urged clean energy reforms, but said, “the old ways of negotiating energy legislation are over. It’s time to put consumers and climate first. I’m not going to sign an energy bill written by the utility companies.”

Pritzker said it’s time to empower local governments to consolidate some of the 7,000 government units in the state, and he emphasized “job creation, education and job training programs, child care and preschool, and a focus on building essential tools of success such as high-speed Internet in all corners of our state.”

But for Republicans watching the speech there was a major omission: a commitment to a proposal they call “fair maps,” which would take the power of drawing legislative districts out of the hands of lawmakers and give it to an independent commission.

“I’ve never seen this state so divided against Chicago as what I see it now and I, as I talk to people, the biggest reason for that is the Democrats have given themselves so much power and such a supermajority by gerrymandering maps,” Senate Minority Leader Bill Brady, a Republican from Bloomington, said. “The rest of the people in the state feel neglected.”

He said partisan-drawn legislative maps “leads to the corruption that we have” by allowing corrupt elected officials to remain in power by tipping the electoral scales in their favor.

While Brady called Pritzker’s address a “good speech” – one that was often threaded with bipartisan applause – he and fellow Republicans said they wanted to see a greater focus on growing jobs.

“I think the speech was well written, and the bipartisan applause was much about the storytelling,” he said.

Pritzker devoted much of his speech to celebrating accomplishments from 2019 – passage of a balanced budget; a $45 billion capital improvements bill; legalization of recreational marijuana; and criminal justice reforms that mean people will no longer have their driver’s licenses suspended or revoked for unpaid parking tickets or fines.

But he said more needs to be done in the coming year, especially in promoting racial diversity and social equity.

“Bit by bit, inch by inch, I am working hard to reverse the harm that has been done to people and communities that have been left behind over many generations by government policies and elected officials who were content to simply ignore them,” Pritzker said.

Those remarks received high praise from members of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus. But they also said they intend to make sure Pritzker follows through on the commitment, especially in the distribution of jobs created through the capital plan.

“There are no other communities in the state of Illinois that have been ignored like the black communities,” Rep. La Shawn K. Ford, a Chicago Democrat, said during a black caucus news conference after Pritzker’s speech. “So we are grateful that we voted for almost a $50 billion capital bill to rebuild Illinois. … That means that this caucus will stand strong to work with the governor’s administration and urge our constituents to urge the governor to rebuild our black communities.”

NEWS briefs D209 to launch mobile app Proviso Township High Schools District 209 will launch a new mobile app on Feb. 4, D209 officials announced earlier this month.

The new D209 Mobile App will launch on the same day as Bring Your Parent to School Day, which will be held at each school on Tuesday. Officials said that they’ll be assisting parents with downloading the free app during the Bring Your Parent to School Day events.

The new mobile app will be available for download online at the iTunes and Google Play app stores, officials said.

“The mobile app will offer a constantly updated feed of district news and events with photos and links to the district’s website,” D209 officials explained in a statement.

“The app can also be customized by the user by selecting the schools they are most interested in for news and updates.”

Broadview Village Square sold for $14.9M Earlier this month, news broke that Broadview Village Square, 700 Broadview Village Square — a roughly 194,000-squarefoot retail establishment that includes Subway, Marshall’s, PetSmart, GNC and Ross Dress for Less, among other tenants — was sold to Bridge33 Capital LLC, which has offices in Seattle, Las Vegas and New York, for an undisclosed price. JLL Capital Markets brokered the sale, RE Business reported on Jan. 10.

But a June 30 article by Crain’s Chicago Business has new details about the transaction — among them, the sell price.

“Bridge33 paid $14.9 million for the shopping center, the deed shows,” Crain’s reports. “That’s 60 percent less than the $37.2 million value at which Spirit was carrying the property on its books at the end of 2018, according to a Spirit Securities & Exchange Commission filing. The price also is about one-quarter the $58 million the shopping center fetched in 2007, just before the recession.”

Crain’s reports that the steep drop in

value may be attributed to the fact that Spirt “retained ownership of a 135,000-squarefoot Home Depot store within the shopping center,” according to Julio Siberio, the head of acquisitions for Bridge33.

Construction company building Maywood apartment building looking for workers McShane Construction Company, the firm contracted to build the $19.5 million, fivestory apartment building at 800-820 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, is looking to hire local tradespeople to work on the site.

Interfaith Housing Development Corporation — the nonprofit that is developing the apartment complex — closed on its purchase of the village-owned lot in December before McShane broke ground on the development earlier this month.

According to a flyer McShane is circulating, the firm is “committed to working with Maywood residents to pair them with contractors working on Fifth Avenue Apartments.”

The company will hold a local hire sign-up event on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Maywood Council Chambers, 125 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood.

“Tradesmen and women looking for work must have a union card and resume to apply,” McShane explained on the flyer.

Republic Services considering change to Maywood garbage, recycling routes Republic Services, the Melrose Parkbased garbage collection company, wants to change the days of waste and recycling collection services in Maywood in order to accommodate for fewer employees. Republic is a division of Allied Waste Disposal Services of North America, LLC. In a letter sent to Maywood Village Manager Willie Norfleet in December, Joe Scaglione, Republic’s general manager, requested that the village agree to the company’s proposal to change the days of service by switching the six solid waste and two recycling collections routes primarily north of Madison Avenue from Wednesday to Tuesday.

“The remaining [six] solid waste and two recycling collection routes primarily south of Madison Avenue would remain on Wednesday,” Scaglione wrote. “Adjusting the routes in this fashion would allow Republic to be more efficient and ensure that all routes are completed in a timely manner.”

During a regular village board meeting on Jan. 7, Maywood Public Works Director John West said that he and other village

staffers will review Republic’s plan before it comes back to the board for final approval by the Board of Trustees.

“They’ve lost several businesses in varying towns and now they’re trying to make sure their workforce continues to flow at a rate that’s acceptable for them,” West told board members. “They’re looking to split pickup dates from one day a week to two.”

In his letter, Scaglione explained that the firm’s contract with Maywood “allows Republic to propose to the Village changes in days of collection, which may include service on more than one day. Furthermore, under Section 52 of the Contract, the Village agreed to comply with all reasonable requests made under the Contract.”

The board is scheduled to vote on the request at a regular meeting sometime in the future. On Jan. 7, village officials did not specify a date for when that meeting will take place.

(IDOT) is working on a $46 million pump station project on I-290, on the south side of the expressway, west of the Desplaines Avenue exit and immediately west of the Desplaines River.

The project, which began on Jan. 6, involves the removal of the existing IDOT pump station superstructure and constructing a new larger wet well and building south of the existing station, which will be repurposed into a grit collection chamber, according to IDOT representative Maria Castaneda.

The goal is to improve the sewer system along the I-290 corridor, which has experienced flooding over the years.

Although the pump station is technically on cemetery property, a temporary easement was provided by the cemetery to IDOT to work on this project, which is expected to be completed in the fall of 2021.

The village of Melrose Park is being sued by a Melrose Park police officer who claims he was terminated unlawfully “in retaliation for his father’s actions to oppose the village’s alleged mistreatment of its sole African American cop,” according to a recent report by the Cook County Record.

Scatchell Sr. According to the lawsuit, Scatchell Sr. fought against the village’s power players, including Melrose Park Mayor Ronald Serpico, Police Director Sam Pistani and Deputy Chief Michael Castellan, on behalf of Kyll Lavalais, the village’s first black police officer.

The three new majority caucus whips will be Omar Aquino, D-Chicago, Michael Hastings, D-Tinley Park, and Napoleon Harris, D-Harvey, all new to the position.

Noticeably absent from the list is Sen. Terry Link, D-Indian Creek, who was an assistant majority leader under Cullerton.

Chicago newspapers have identified Link as the unnamed senator who cooperated with the FBI and wore a wire in conversations with indicted former Rep. Luis Arroyo. Link has denied the allegation and has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, previously a majority caucus whip, will ascend to assistant majority leader as well. She joins Sens. Dave Koehler, D-Peoria, Iris Martinez, D-Chicago, and Tony Munoz, D-Chicago, who all already held assistant majority leader positions and will retain them.
